Despite living in the Bergen County area for our entire lives and frequently dining in Ridgewood, none of us were aware of this hidden gem until my brother suggested it. Ridgewood is a town with limited parking. Saturday's are good for metered spots (if you can find them) since the meter ends at 6pm. Piccolo Bistro's front looks like it would offer great al fresco dining in the summer. It was easy enough making a reservation online, and since our movie ended earlier than expected, they still had a table ready for us. The inside provides the cozy comfort and dimmed lighting of a real restaurant. A wave of discussions from other tables is not loud enough to drown out your own conversation. The menu is limited, and that's a plus. Don't make any hasty decisions until the specials are recited by the waiter. We went with the seafood rice ball. It's split in half to share. I'm not sure what the sauce was on it, but I loved it. My wife's soul was cooked to perfection and the roasted almonds on top were a great touch. A major complaint I have about many restaurants is overlooking items, but that was certainly not the case with my risotto primavera, with chunks of salmon sprinkled in. When it came time for dessert the tiramisu was a generous slice big enough to share between at least two people. When the last thing that I have to mention is the BYOB, I know I've enjoyed everything enough that I'll be making a return visit in the future. read more

Called the number listed and they tried to help by telling me to call UBER Eats and when I called UBER Eats, they said there is nothing they can do because Piccolo uses Their own delivery service, which is a third party. We had a party of five and were seated in the back, at a mostly exclusive dining table with beautiful decor that reminded me of a cozy dining room. The wait staff was friendly and service was prompt and attentive to refilling our water as well. The grilled octopus appetizer special was delicious but quite pricey for the portions, even for fine Italian dining. Wanted a light lunch after 2pm. This town's deserted on a Friday afternoon in the summer -- so lots of closed rooms. Enter Piccolo Bistro. Cute little place, inside and out. Relative newcomer (March, 2016) with plenty of seating outside -- like for 100 people it seems -- nicely set back and gated from the street -- sorta California style. All the seats (in and out) were empty, but for ours. Sometimes (like today) that really works for me when I just want some private time with Sweetie on her rare weekday at home. We shared a cold tomato/basil soup, mussels in garlic and white wine, kale caesar's with shrimp and a Caprese salad with balsamic glaze. I wanted to like the food more, mostly because the space was comfortable and our server (Danielle) was so polite and helpful that it was easier to overlook some of the food flaws. The Good: Caprese was honest, good fresh tomato's, creamy burrata with a tight pellicle, and just a drizzle of balsamic glaze to tie it together. The best was the tomato/basil soup -- cold and creamy, perfectly smooth mouth feel, and just the right balance of salt, sweet and acid. I liked the soup very much -- and a large bowl would have been a great main for me with more of the warm semolina knots they served with the meal to dip and scrape the bowl. Less Successful: The mussels were tiny and had that nasty clinginess to the shell that suggests old. They ate a bit off, and while you could taste wine and garlic in the brine -- it needed more punch and seasoning. Similarly, the kale caesars, while inventive, was mushy with a dressing that tasted more like mayo than caesars. Caesars is always about the dressing and crisp greens. The dressing was missing that anchovy, garlic, lemon and parmesan punch that the best versions of this salad showcase. That said, the croutons were good and the shrimp alongside was perfectly charred and seasoned. Our lunch (at $52.00 before tip) was a solid 3.0 -- and we will return for dinner to sample more of the menu. We understand the chef is brand new and this usually means working stuff out in the kitchen will take some time. We will give dinner a try one night and see what we see. TBC. read more

This place looks nice and had good service but that is about it. The best part of the food was the French fries and shrimp the rest of it had no flavor and very bland. They were overly priced with everything and even charged 2.7% extra for using your credit card. I don't recommend this place and I will not be returning to eat here. read more

When the check came it had an almost $3.00 service fee for using a credit card. it was automatically applied to everyone's check with out even asking if you were paying cash ore credit. When I inquired with the waiter he confirmed that was what the charge was for but since I was paying in cash it would be removed. It was not. When change was given the fee was still deducted. Food was good. Our waitress was extremely nice. The owner was a complete tool. We had a reservation for 2 at 7:00. The table next to us was a party of 4, who arrived 10 minutes after us. They were served their dinner first. One of our dinners was ordered wrong by the waitress, it happens, we were not upset with her. Her boss, the owner, on the other hand blamed her and praised his kitchen for getting my husband the dinner he actually ordered in under 10 minutes! No apology, just arrogance. When we asked for to him to accommodate, like possibly comping our 13 dollar salad, he only took off 10. He seriously was a joke!! Plenty of other restaurants in Ridgewood. We were here a couple of weeks ago on a Thursday and absolutely loved everything! The food was SO GOOD. The owner was took care of our order and we were so excited to come back. We made a reservation for Valentine's Day and couldn't have been more disappointed. I ordered the gnocchi with the pappardelle sauce (short rib ragu) and my fiancé ordered the chicken parm, exactly what we got last time. The gnocchi was heavenly last time. On Valentine's Day I got pappardelle with cacio e Pepe sauce and I told the waitress that's not what I ordered, to which she responded "that's why I told you $5 surcharge". First off the portions on Valentine's Day were smaller and second of all the cacio e pepe was watered down and not the Ragu I ordered. I didn't even eat 1/2 the pasta and left hungry. We paid and left. We went to another bar/restaurant nearby so I could have something to eat. If I could go back and review our first visit it'd be a 5 star review, unfortunately the second visit is far from that. read more

We ended up coming here after witnessing an uncomfortable and worrying COVID-19 safety issue at The Office Tavern across the street. We were very glad we ended up coming here. Everything from the appetizer rolls and kale potato soup to our main courses (Pollo alla Saltimbocca and penne with Italian sausage, fennel crema, parsnip, porcini jus, fennel pollen) was absolutely DELICIOUS. So fresh, warm, made with good quality ingredients, and comforting. They also have little hand sanitizer bottles on each table, which is very helpful. Had an early dinner here with my mom. We split two dishes. We had the salmon as well as gnocchi. The salmon was just ok. The skin was actually crispy which was really good but the dish overall was a little bland. The gnocchi on the other hand is homemade and delish. The menu had so many choices we thought we were at a Jersey diner.But ah, the prices made me think we were dining on the upper east side. Food was fine, nothing special. Our first post lockdown dinner out. Both couples have had our second Moderna vaccine So when I saw they offered a special Panzanella Salad - a dish I love I jumped on it. For those familiar with a Panzanella salad the key is bread - often day old- immersed in the dressing- the bread softens as it sits in the salad waiting to mix with the greens, etc. I couldn't believe their version of this classic. An uninspired green salad with two slices of hard bread lying on top. I should have read their description more carefully but trusted an Italian bistro knew what a Panzanella salad. When we paid the check and left a generous tip I pointed out to our waiter my thoughts on the disappointing salad. Experience checking in: When I arrived with my wife, another couple arrived the same time. The manager asked the other couple to pick any table they prefer. This didn't make sense as the other couple had a choice, and the place was almost empty. We decided to sit where they wanted us to sit, which was in the back where there was no one else. I order regular ravioli and my wife ordered a lobster ravioli. Both dishes lacked flavor. It seemed as if they just bought shoperite brand ravioli and through it on a plate. The sauce was clearly watered down. Really disappointed for a $30+ dish. We didnt eat our food and decided to get the check and leave. Had the Gamberetti e Fagiole- Shrimps, Tuscan white beans, pancetta, germolata and the Piccolo Burger- Organic beef burger, topped with braised short ribs, caramelized onions, mushrooms, Gruyere, chorizo aioli, served with parmigiano truffle fries The former was just OK. The tails of the shrimp were burnt but the flavors of the beans were nice. A little too little pancetta and it felt a bit light on flavors. The burger on the other hand was excellent. While I would say that the chorizo aioli didn't really taste of chorizo, the burger itself was delicious. Cooked perfect and succulent at medium rare. The short ribs on top gave it a very warm/rich filling. The onions and mushrooms helped along with the Gruyere. It's obviously not a burger you can pick up easily but it was delicious. The fries had a little bit of parmigiano and no truffle flavor. Still were fried well. I would potentially say just to get rid of the aioli. No need for it. I see potential in this place but there were some faults. There is something that feels odd with giving a fancy Italian place 4 stars for a burger especially when the Italian food had some definite faults. 3.6 rounded up. read more

The restaurant offers a cozy, romantic indoor atmosphere and outdoor seating (a rarity in Ridgewood). That said, I would've preferred classic Italian music or golden oldies over the top 40 pop hits playing over the sound system. A group of friends and I heard they had a Sinatra singer for New Year's Eve, so who doesn't love Sinatra and Italian food? This guy was Amazing. Close your eyes and a young Sinatra was crooning while we enjoyed some perfectly prepared eats. We loved everything we ate, the fried calamari was perfect, crunchy and tender. They had a steak special for 2 and let's just say it was melt in your mouth delish and enough to feed 3 or 4.
