Better than leftovers on Thanksgiving Saturday

Returned to PB last night and John and his team delivered a very memorable evening. Warmed rolls with pesto and butter were so delish on a cold evening. Our appt were delicious and our group shared. The waitress complied and tweaked one of their specials to franchise the jumbo shrimp instead of scampi. Not every restaurant can master a delicate risotto but PB nailed it. Very reasonable check considering the quality and cost of seafood these days. We will return sooner rather than later Michele O

Returned to this lovely, quaint establishment last evening with friends. Had not dined here in two years therefore we were delighted to return. It was a perfect Monday evening dinner. We sat outside with our bottles of wine - BYOB. The owner, John, took care of us the entire evening along with the rest of the tables. He was quick, nonstop and just great! We ordered a few specials including the sirloin with glazed mushrooms, mashed potatoes and veggies. It was delightful! We also tried the risotto with scallops -my absolute favorite dish of the evening!! We had the chicken dish again (forgot the name) but it was oh-so-tasty! We were there for a small bday dinner and John was extremely generous and provided us with a complimentary chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream. It was huge and absolutely delicious!! The ambience, weather, seating, cleanliness and service was outstanding! Will most definitely return again and again! Oh they provided complimentary warm bread with olive oil, pesto and basil? We devoured that as well! Thanks for a wonderful evening John and an extra thanks for not kicking us out even though we sat there chatting and laughing after your closing time.

This is BYOB, it has Nice outdoor seating area that is covered and has fresh greenery. The owner was attentive to our table, brought out a wine bucket for keep our wine chilled. The service was good. It took awhile for our bread to come but when to did it was warm and served with a seasoned dipping oil. Apps- polenta with mushrooms and artichokes was tasty. Dinner- chicken parm was thin and crispy and served with pasta. The halibut special was served with a glaze that had green grapes in it. I was curious to try it and I'm glad I did. It was a sweet and savory dish. The chicken saltimbocca was a little dry and the sauce was bland. The last dish our table had was the special pappardelle with chicken dish served with a spinach and sundried tomato sauce which was tasty but just need a little salt.

We made a reservation for NYE night at 5:30. We were sat immediately and noticed that only a few other tables were filled. There was a host, 1 server and 1 food runner. We sat with the menus for a while before the server took our order. We ordered our appetizer and entrees at the same time. Warm bread and oil came out and then we were ignored for the approximately 35 minutes it took for our appetizer to come out. We had to ask for a bucket of ice for our wine bottle. It is BYOB. I overheard you can get wine delivered from a local shop. Everyone is friendly enough, but seem way too laid back about service. Just 3 people handling the front of house, especially on a holiday was wild. The place filled quickly while we were there and no other help arrived. Our entrees took a while to come out once she took our appetizer plate away. They kept saying no to walk-ins, but then backing down and saying that they could only order an entree and had to leave quickly. I feel like their food was prioritized over ours to get them out quickly. I watched another table get sat for their reservation and they waited over 15 minutes to even get menus! The food was very good and well prepared. The lava cake was a bit dry, but the creamy vanilla ice cream saved the dish. We had cappuccinos with dessert and they were delicious. If you bring a few bottles of wine, good company and have an open schedule, the food is worth checking out.

We had the gnocci cacio de Pepe and the squid ink pasta. Overall a very nice dinner. It is the perfect little byob restaurant for a quick dinner or night out.

After a walk about downtown Ridgewood, we wandered in to Piccolo Bistro and so glad we did! The food was Ah-mazing! Perfectly flavored and portioned sized. The salad was fresh as if the leaves and vegetables were just picked! The chicken Parmigiana and Francese were paired with the right amounts of sauces and was so delicious! This was my first visit to this restaurant and will certainly come back. The staff is friendly and there is light musical notes humming in the background while we sat out door in the warm summer air of the evening.

Fantastic BYOB cozy relaxed home-style place. Great food, comfortable atmosphere and perfect level of service. I ordered the codfish special and it was delicious. The other items we ordered were also very good. Warm bread with herbed olive oil to start, nice sweet and sour salad and then the entrees. No room for dessert but they sound great!

Situated in Ridgewood near the train station in a nice Bergen County community. Parking is a bit tough, so be prepared to walk a couple blocks. The venue is a bit old and outdated inside. Although we dined indoors it looks like outdoor dining in good weather could be pleasant . The menu was somewhat uneventful. Our group tried a bunch of different items which mostly stood out as OK at best The chicken Parm might have been the best, but would have expected one of the pastas to take the number one spot. Polite and attentive servers made the experience much more tolerable. The octopus appetizer with chickpeas and quinoa sounded great, but should've passed. The antipasto appetizer was a couple pieces of sliced meat, mozzarella, artichoke, and some sliced olives, and tomatoes for garnish. However, reasonably priced, and a BYOB in a nice active area of town. Our server was great and it was easy to get a reservation.

We tried two of the specials: the orecchiette with sausage and broccoli rabe, which was absolutely delicious, and the chicken saltimbocca, which was fantastic -- by far the best dish of the night. We also had the cacio e pepe pasta, which unfortunately missed the mark. It was extremely undercooked -- even hard to cut with a butter knife -- so that was a bit disappointing. That said, everything else was wonderful! The desserts were outstanding -- their tartufo is unique and not like others I've had, and the Nutella ricotta pie was my absolute favorite. Very rich, very sweet, and a generous portion. Despite the pasta hiccup, we really enjoyed our meal and would absolutely come back again! Oddly they don't have a cappuccino maker and no regular coffee-just espresso I believe.

The carbonara was made nicely and didn't feel too heavy like other places. I thought the red sauce pastas were a bit lacking in flavor. Amatriciana didn't have any spice. Pomodoro needed some salt. Romaine salad was small and had too many croutons. Eggplant was delicious. We went during the day so there wasn't much ambiance perse. It is run by a family, and they were attentive. The wine is sold in half or whole bottles (not glasses), so I opted out this time. The menu is a mix of traditional Spanish tapas as well as American and Latin American mixed in. Our original Resy was canceled due to a change in business hours, so we were offered a complimentary dessert. We tried the cheesesteak empanadas, croquettes, bbq pulled pork arepa, garlic shrimp, octopus, short rib gnocchi and finished with tres leches cake. My favorites were the octopus, shrimp, gnocchi, empanada, and tres leches cake. Croquettes were the least favorite, just not exciting, and they were kind of smashed. The octopus was very tender and enjoyed the sauce and sundried tomatoes that came with it. Everything came out at the right temperature and at a good pace to not overwhelm the table with dishes. The restaurant is dimly lit. I found the booth backs to be very hard and uncomfortable - could use an upgrade. Prices per dish are high for the size, but to be expected with tapas in the states. We strolled in at around 5:45 on an early Saturday evening on a brick cold New Jersey day and they were BUSSSSY. There weren't many patrons dining inside their small restaurant, but there seemed to be PLENTY of takeout business for whole pies and delivery too. In addition, they had, if my count was correct, at least 9 gentlemen working behind the counter, which pretty much speaks for the volume of business they have (else they are grossly overemployed and overpaying). From what I saw just based on the pizzas on display next to the cash register, the slices looked pretty good. Unfortunately, as the old saying goes, looks can be deceiving. Not to say that the pizza was bad, but it could have been better on multiple fronts. We ordered 4 slices - plain cheese, pepperoni, buffalo and a Santoni's Special. In addition, my wife, veering on the healthier (and smarter) side, ordered a pear salad with chicken. First, I didn't get to try the pear salad, but my wife raved about how good it actually was and how she thoroughly enjoyed it as we munched on our pizza, which she should have been jealous of, but shockingly wasn't. Second, the pizza. My kids ate almost the entirety of their plain cheese and pepperoni slices, so I didn't have a chance to try them, other than a few roni cups that my son claimed were too spicy for him. As for my slices, the buffalo and Santoni's Special, the buffalo was a doozy. When I bite into a buffalo pizza slice, there's nothing I hate more than the fact that it lacks buffalo flavoring and this one was one of those cases. It was more on the side of just tasting like a chicken pizza slice with a slight hint of buffalo flavoring, if that. The Santoni's Special was a bit better in that it had green peppers, sausage, pepperoni, onion and mushroom. It reminded me of a Sbarro supreme slice of pizza. It might not seem like much of a compliment, but I actually enjoyed the Santoni's Special, albeit it was not on the piping hot side, nor did it keep is shape. In fact, neither slice I had was hot, which was very surprising considering that it took a while for them to be served to us, which can only have meant that it was heated up in the oven --- or so I thought????? Also, both slices I ate completely fell apart in that when I tried to fold them in half (like how a true New Yorker eats their slices of pizza), they cracked at the crust and broke creating a fissure looking like I had cut the pizza in that area. It was somewhat annoying as I had to eat the slice with 2 hands, which to me, is a big no-no as one should be able to devour a slice by holding it with just one hand. What self-righteous pizza lover holds a slice of pizza with 2 hands? Well, I had to unfortunately because of the fault line on my pizza. The pizza here definitely has potential and I don't know what a whole pie would taste like, but I'm pretty sure it would be fresher than the slices we had. I get that pizzas where slices are served from are typically sitting out for long periods, but you gotta heat the slices up a lot longer. Cold pizza should only be reserved for the morning when you wake up from that hang over and don't have the mental acuity to throw it in the oven or microwave it.

After visiting the Hackensack location recently, we decided to give the other location in Ridgewood a try as well since we loved the pizza so much at the original. We dropped in at around 5:15pm on a very quiet Memorial Day weekend Sunday evening and, as expected, the restaurant was also very, very quiet. We were only the 2nd group of diners for the evening, although it did get pretty busy as the evening wore on, including many pick up orders. We ordered a Caesar Salad to start along with the Combo Platter, which came with some fried ravioli, fried mozzarella, & chicken fingers. First, the Caesar Salad ---- we ordered it just to get some greens in our systems, but it was pretty much like the one served in Hackensack. The croutons in the salad were just cut up pieces of the bread that they include in the order as a side, but stale-tasting. As for the Combo Platter, that was decent, but the fried ravioli felt a bit empty, as in it felt like I was just eating a square piece of fried dough with no filling. The fried mozzarella and chicken fingers were decent, however, having some marinara sauce to dip them in DEFINITELY helped. For our entree, we shared a medium Tomato & Cheese pie with 1/2 Pepperoni. As I said, the reason we came here was because we absolutely loved the pie from the Hackensack location and didn't expect anything less here. The pizza pie came out piping hot, which was a great sign. Flavor-wise it was fantastic - the tang of the tomato sauce was delicious and the amount of cheese was perfect. Honestly, it was still one of the best pizzas I've EVERRRR had and I've had my fair share of pizza in NYC and New Haven. BUT...yes, there's a BUT here, where in Sam Hill was the pepperoni?!?! I encountered just a measly 9 pepperonis in total on the half of the pie that had it. Seriously, 9?!?! If I can count the number of pepperoni cups on the pizza, you better believe there is a problem...BIG problem. At the Hackensack location, we had the problem of having TOO MANY pepperoni cups, including 2 or 3 stacked one on top of the other. Anyhow, the pizza was still great, but more evenly spread pepperoni would have helped. Soooo, back to the service though. I'm not sure what it is about both locations, but the waiters really come off as rude - no "You're Welcomes", no "How is everything going? Can I get you anything?" Not much interaction at all. To be honest, not a whole lot of professionalism. At the Hackensack location, the waiters seem a bit more seasoned, but something still seems off, while at the Ridgewood location, we just didn't feel very welcome. Maybe we were being a bit sensitive, but having felt like we have dined everywhere, it felt easy identifying the "blah" service. Doubt it was an off night. Bottom line. The pizza is GREAT here and you definitely get your money's worth with the large, but don't come here thinking you're walking into the Cheers bar anytime soon.
