We are new to the neighborhood. So glad we can walk here to enjoy a nice lunch on the patio. The toasted ravioli are really good. We had it with garlic cheese bread and house salads. All very good. Pietro's is a mixed scene. The convivial atmosphere, earnest owners and employees, and huge numbers of patrons could lead one to imagine the food must be tops. It is not. Canned gravy, reconstituted potatoes, canned mushrooms do not count. Neither do sauces from a jar. read more

I noticed at least one person on here who mixed up Pietros and Del Pietros. This is Pietros. They're down on Watson near our *favorite ice cream place* (I'm not sure what Yelp's rules on crossing reviews are). Anyway. Southside Italian. Here is my take on it. Pietros is not the most authentic Italian restaurant in St. Louis. Pietros is not the fanciest Italian restaurant in St. Louis. But it is my favorite Italian restaurant in St. Louis. It is Americanized Italian - and there is no denying that. I like Americanized Italian. What I love about this place is that everything tastes like it was made by my mom (My mom is a rockin' cook, by the way). What I mean by that is that it tastes like everything is from scratch, and everything was made by someone who loves these recipes like their own children. The toasted rav is the only place in town where I'll eat that OUTSIDE of my mom's kitchen. I have had almost every single thing on the menu, and I've never had something I didn't enjoy. My personal favorite is the canneloni with salad and house dressing. Not very experimental...but at the end of the meal I feel like I've been filled with the most amazing comfort food on the planet. Ok, I swear I'm done gushing about the food. Atmosphere - ...I don't know. It's hokey. It hasn't been updated in 30 years...but I like it that way. It feels...more homey than hokey to me. Like my grampa could be sitting in there playing pinochle. You can dress up a little or be casual - either works. Staff - The friendliest in town. They treat their customers like their own family. They make you feel totally at home - make sure you are constantly taken care of. They even understand strategic table-setting to keep breakable, interesting things away from my two year old. :D I should stop gushing. It's a great place for a date night, a family night, or a big gathering. You won't find any hipsters in this place - just a family feeling and good food. read more

It's not the most amazing Italian food I have ever had, and it does not compare to Zia's or anywhere on The Hill in my very humble opinion...but it's really quite delicious, it's never packed like all the places on The Hill, it is open on Mondays unlike all the places on The Hill and it's incredibly reasonably priced. So....all that said, I'm a fan. The menu is standard Italian fare. Tons of pastas and salads and Chicken Parm type dishes. Everything tastes very fresh and is clearly made to order. The atmosphere is nothing special, but very casual which is nice when you are out for dinner in a local establishment such as this. It is also very family friendly...and who doesn't appreciate that? Also, it's family owned and has been forever. No supporting some awful chain like Olive Garden and the food is about a thousand times better than anything you could imagine making at Olive Garden anyway. The staff is all very friendly and attentive as well. Definitely worth checking out if you are looking for good local Italian and don't want to deal with the bustle of the Hill. read more

Pietro's is a family owned Italian restaurant located on Watson in a semi-residential district near St. Louis Hills. It's been around awhile and has a large following of a mostly retired clientele. The food is fairly basic Italian with a few American items. Nothing on the menu stands out as exceptional, except for the fresh Italian bread that is served. But, it is typical of what you can expect at a southside Italian restaurant. I tried to order a Red Bull in the bar one night and the bartender laughed at me, since their crowd is mostly geriatric, and they stock "no such thing." They do have some great Lenten Friday fish specials and they have a nice banquet room downstairs that is perfect for reasonably priced rehearsal dinners, showers, etc. read more

First, we are under the age of 50. Yes, the elder citizens of St. Louis love this place for lunch. But with the attentive service and good food, I can see why. We were back in town, having lived here about 20 years ago, and wanted the famous Piertro's special salad. (We also purchased a couple of bottles of dressing to bring home with us). Because we also wanted an entree, they generously split the large salad for us. Yummy! Better than I had remembered. I had toasted ravioli (a St. Louis thing) and hubby had a Reuben with fries. If you're a Catholic who lives in St. Louis Hills, you have more than likely been to Pietro's. We stumbled into this place after discovering a 2-hour wait at Trattoria Marcella. We were hungry, and it was cold. I honestly felt like I stepped back in time going to this place - the wood paneling, dingy lighting, dated fabrics, fan-folding room dividers, big round tables. Our waiter was super nice, super Southside (he asked us what parish we were from, which we thought was cute/interesting...), attentive and friendly. This is a family-owned joint and it feels warm like that. Don't expect high-falutin' food. The salad is more cheese than iceberg, the sauces more butter than wine, the pasta plentiful. On that note, this place is a nutritionist's worse nightmare. Stick to the basics (Chicken Parmesan, Fettuccine) and go in knowing what to expect, and you may enjoy the experience (old-skool atmosphere, down-home fuzzy feelings.) I know I did, even though it's a place I probably wouldn't go again. read more

How to describe Pietro's? It is an old school Italian restaurant. Just a few blocks off the Hill. The menu is a full list of the Pastas you expect as well as the entrees normally seen, chicken, veal parmesan and most of the other familiar offerings. This is not a place for nouveau cuisine but rather the traditional. That is not to imply that what they do they don't do well. Our table sampled pasta carbonara, tortellini, pasta con broccoli, backed mosteccoli and baked Grouper. As is the bent of many pasta menus, this one provided very large servings. Many take out boxes were needed. The highlights included; bacon smoky enough to assert itself in the carbonara, broccoli that was still tender crisp, perfectly baked Grouper, even under the marinara sauce, and veal parmesan that was nicely done. The veal seemed to be a little dark that suggested it may be older, tenderized cattle rather than the expected pale veal. The taste and texture were fine. The tortellini must have been good as my 102 pound wife at it all and mopped the bowl. The group was so satiated that they almost decided to skip a visit to Ted Drewes, just 2 blocks away. But, as usual, Drewes always wins. Service was friendly, accommodating and quick. This is a good place for groups of friends or family. It's worth a visit. read more

As far as "Italian" restaurants on The Hill (note: Italian is in quotation marks), Pietros is kinda in the middle. By this time you should know that whenever you visit an "Italian" restaurant on The Hill, you should expect the following: - Unnecessarily dark lighting - More fried items on the menu than fresh items - A wait staff comprised entirely of teenage sons and daughters of people who know the owners (they're good people) - The smell of Old Spice permeating the place - A dining room with decor that hasn't been updated since 1977 - A clientele consisting of old couples, families with children, and nervous teenagers on first dates. No annoying hipsters. As a matter of fact, not many people aged 21-35 at all. - $14-17 for an entree with 2 sides. - A bottomless basket of bread with unspreadable butter. - All food will be covered in sauce of some sort. - On a busy day/night, a wait of between 15 minutes and 45 minutes. No more, no less. Pietros is right in the meaty middle of Hill restaurants. Everything you expect, nothing fancy, unless your idea of fancy is white tablecloths and free bread refills. The food is above average, even good at times, but really nothing that you couldn't get other places. It probably best serves as a fill-in restaurant in case Trattoria Marcella across the street gives you an ungodly wait time (hey, it happens). The bigger problem is that most of the Hill restaurants kind of meld into each other, and you have to have a distinctive trait to separate yourself from the herd. Pietros doesn't have that. It's just middle of the road...rarely disappointing but never wows. The food is better than you would expect for such an older, tired looking establishment, but I'm not sure what that's really worth. It's one of those places that I've been to many times in various circumstances, but really have no desire to return. Maybe that's because I'm between the ages of 21-35. Once I reach the minimum age threshhold, perhaps I'll join the party. read more

Recently has dinner with my wife, celebrating our anniversary. The service was horrible, we sat for 10 minutes with no water no bread and no server. Finally got a server, who never said the special. My wife ordered pasta prima Vera, it was disgusting, over cooked tasteless vegetables drowning in oil. It was the worse pasta I have ever eaten. I ordered veal Picatta, again disgusting. Pietro's has been my go to place in the neighborhood, since my beloved Tumo's closed a few years ago. Lots of people know Pietro's as either a place to hold a rehearsal dinner or for the older crown that they draw, but this is a great little spot for some good grub! Wile it's true that the food is a bit Americanized, it's still delish! I would recommend either sitting in the bar, (which has normal dinner tables and beautiful hard wood, everything) or sitting outside on the patio and staying away from the main dining room. There's noting particularly wrong with the dining area but there are no booths/romantic lighting and can tend to have a bit of a cafeteria feel. With that said, they have fabulous bread in general, but the cheese garlic bread is a mountain of gooey, cheesy, garlicky goodness that has not skimped on the butter or the cheese - yum!! I've have also had a number of pasta's including the Fettuccine and the Pasta Pomodoro, which have always been wonderful with fresh ingredients, and in large portions. Staff is always friendly and the food is great and hey, where else can I sit at a bar and have the bartender ask "What will you have young lady? = awesome!! read more

What's not to love about a neighborhood Italian restaurant? Sure, the decor isn't the newest, but the walls in the dining room look like they've been updated at least within the last 10 years. When the food is good, I don't need fancy surroundings. The house salad dressing was a nice Italian which was slightly sweet. The small dinner salad was a nice heap of greens with provel cheese, thinly sliced rings of red onion and dressing. The wine list was simple and provided a nice basic variety. But the real winner was the chicken saltimbocca that I ordered. The chicken was so tender, buttery juicy that the knife just slid right through it and the breading was light and crisp, the sauce creamy and not too heavy... oh, I tell you it was the one of the best chicken saltimbocca I've had. My friend's baked mostacholi looked delicious and the portions were huge. The side of pasta that came with my chicken were shells with white sauce, the sauce had a one-note of garlic but with a couple shakes of pepper it was better but not terrific. read more

I have been here MANY times over the years that I lived in St. Louis. My most recent visit was a private party. They did a great job serving us and all the food was tasty. They had tosted ravioli (which is ONLY good in St. Louis!) as well as their famous salad, chicken wings, mostaccioli and small sub sandwiches. The staff is full of relaxing enjoyable people. The servers are engaging and really are patient with a typically older clientele.The food is what you would expect from a long time traditional Italian restaurant. The toasted ravioli are quite good. Pastas are large and well done. I wasn't a big fan of the fetuccini but others at the table enjoyed it. I have been here several times for banquets in one of the large areas towards the back. For a group setting, this place is excellent. There is now a nice patio out front, but a little too close to Watson. there is street parking near the entrance but a large private parking lot is around the back. We had thanksgiving dinner there yesterday and our server was fantastic ! I know my family can be a pain I am a server as well and they make me cringe at times coming from the service industry. We've been coming here for years, and now my husband, who's not a St. Louis native, won't go home from a visit before we've had a meal at Pietro's! The prices are reasonable, and the atmosphere feels very nice for a sit-down dinner out with the whole family! I always order the pasta peroni with a dinner salad. The Italian bread before dinner is always a treat! The staff is very friendly and patient. The main audience seems to be the older generation, and some of the dishes cater to that palate, so it's not the trendiest of local eats, but that does make it feel like a well-kept secret! read more

Normally have an excellent dinner at Pietros wonderful service but the special chicken and beef Modiga was not The traditional Italian recipe I was expecting. the beef sauce was heavy and it wasn't beef chunks, it was rolls roast beef with cheese in the middle. The chicken sauce was a little thick and again too heavy. It would have been much better if they stuck to the traditional beef and chicken Modiga that is normally served in chunk form with a lighter sauce over it. read more

I've been coming here for years with my grandma and family. I'm 26 now and I still love this place. I hate to knock a local business, but this is one of those places where you can't understand why it's so popular. There's better tasting Italian food at many other restaurants in the area (Tratoria Marcella, Antonino's, Zia's, LoRusso's, etc.). Also, this place caters to the 70 years plus crew, so if you're younger and looking for atmosphere, this is not your joint. I ate here once years ago and it was meh and felt pricey. I called there today to ask a couple of questions and the lady that answered the phone was very rude to me, so I will not be going back. I suspect the high yelp rating comes from paid reviewers and am particularly suspect of the ones from out-of-state reviewers. read more

I ordered carryout. On the phone I asked a lot of questions about two menu items that were similar. I wanted what I ordered the last time I was there, in 2009. The girl on the phone seemed helpful and based on the description provided I was confident I ordered the right thing. I showed up to pick up my order, and as the girl walked my order up to me, she told me that my order was incorrect. I was told the chef messed up and prepared the menu item that was the more expensive of the two I inquired about which is not what I ordered. They knew the order was incorrect, but rather than fix it they decided they'd just give it to me and let me know that I was coming out ahead because they were only going to charge me the rate of the less expensive menu item. But that's not what I wanted! What the hell?? What kind of restaurant intentionally passes off an incorrect order rather than fix their mistake? Set aside the fact that the less expensive menu item, which I ordered, is the better tasting option of the two. I would have paid MORE if I just could have had my order correct. In hindsight I could have complained but I was on the spot so I reluctantly accepted the incorrect order. Beyond that it is clear that the kitchen staff doesn't put enough care into what they are doing. The side salad container had lettuce sticking out of it. Someone had to know that it wasn't packaged properly, because they have eyes, and then make a decision to leave it like that. It screams "I don't care!" The toasted ravioli was awful. There was almost no meat in it, and I don't know what the heck they did to it but most of the ravioli had strange indentations in them. Also don't believe the "homemade" comment on the description on the menu. It's a lie. The woman that took my order told me it's just frozen ravioli and they bread it themselves. What respectable restaurant would lie about something so stupid? Also worth noting is that the side of white pasta that you can opt for when you get an entree is 100% the same as their pasta con broccoli, except of course the pasta con broccoli has broccoli and mushrooms. Other than than you're paying $13.25 for what is essentially a side dish, and it is average at best. Don't buy it. There was red sauce on the outside of the toasted ravioli to-go container. It had to be quite obvious to whoever packaged it up, but they were cool with delivering it to me messy. I didn't realize it was there at first as I was taking all of the food containers out of the to-go bag, and as a result accidentally got red sauce on my shirt. Thanks for nothing, Pietro's! Insult to injury... The kitchen staff half-assed everything. It could not be more clear that they just don't care, it's that simple. A good restaurant with a professional staff wouldn't make mistakes like this, realize it, and then not correct them. I think I'm done with this place. What a disappointment. read more

We had a wonderful experience at Pietro's last weekend. Despite the COVID restrictions, we felt very safe and really enjoyed our meal. Our waitress, Julie H., was very personable and kind. Last Saturday my wife and I had supper at Pietros before the Muny. I called for reservations at 6:30 PM. When we arrived the parking lot was full. People were leaving because of the 45 min wait. But we were seated right on time. The house salad was fantastic, served with lots of bread. I had the Grouper Primavera. My wife had the Shrimp Skewers. BOTH FABULOUS! And Jimmy our waiter was the best. I would have waited an hour for this meal. We can't wait to go back next time we are in St Louis. read more

What you say about this old St. Louis Italian restaurant. My family has been eating at PIetros for over 50 years. It's classic St. Louis Italian food. I always end up with a veal dish that is excellent. But there chicken Italian dishes, and beef also her great. The owner John or his family are always on site. We stopped in Pietro's today about 1:30 for a late lunch. It wasn't horribly crowded. We wanted to eat on the patio and there were only about 4 parties out there. The hostess took the name of the people who came in before us and then ours. She said it would be a few minutes...then she disappeared. Soon the owner or manager came up to the stand and really started getting people seated. If tables are available, it's not good business to keep people waiting just because you aren't happy to be at work inside on such a nice day! We were shown to a table on the patio and our server appeared fairly quickly. Their soft drinks are Pepsi products so we stuck with water. He brought some bread and then he disappeared! He finally returned to take our order. I ordered the Chicken Pietro and my husband ordered the Veal Pietro. We both had salads (his without cheese) and pasta with OBG (olive oil, butter, garlic). The salads came and they were fresh and tasty. The house dressing is good -- sort of a vinaigrette that has a little mustard in it. We finished our salads and went back to waiting. At this point, they truly were not very busy so the wait should not have been so long. Our food came. I enjoyed mine very much. It was hot and the chicken was tender. My husband's veal was breaded and fried -- not what we expected and he said it tasted like hamburger. When we finished, the server came to see if we needed anything else and we said just the check. Thankfully, he returned with that quickly, so we were able to pay and get on with our day. There are so many fabulous Italian restaurants on The Hill that we probably won't go back to Pietro's. read more

I come from a smaller city that has a really great little Italian restaurant that my family and I love! So when I moved to Saint Louis, we were excited to go to the hill. After trying a few restaurants, we were disappointed, until we found Pietros! (which is not even in the hill). The sauce is flavorful, pasta cooked just right, the thousand island dressing and house dressing are wonderful!! I really have nothing negative to say about this place. My fiance ordered the cannelloni, me the lasagna, and my parents had the special. Everything was great and reasonably priced! I have a feeling we will be regulars at Pietros! read more

I have known about this restaurant for a long time but just ate there for the first time tonight. It was very good. As I typically do when I try a new Italian restaurant I try the spaghetti so I can judge the tomato sauce. It came with meat sauce (ala bolagnese not marinara). It was a minimal extra charge for two meatballs but I am worth it as my wife is wont to say. The sauce was good. It needed a bit more spices to make it more flavorful but it was good and I would have it again. The meatballs were outstanding. The dinner salad with the house dressing is great. It seemed to have a citrus overtone with a slight sweet undertone. I will try something a little more daring the next time I visit and will let you know how it goes. read more
