To start, I would take caution in comparing the dumplings here with Din Tai Fung's dumplings. Ping's Dumpling House is Qingdao food, and for those who are geographically challenged, this is in China. Din Tai Fung is a Taiwanese establishment. They are not the same and almost incomparable. It may be hard to tell us apart from one another, but that's as far as it goes. As far as the cuisine, the food will not be identical. Now comparisons aside, I had an uncontrollable craving for any type of steamed dumplings for a month. We were about to stop at Uwajimaya to shop anyway, so I looked up restaurants that make dumplings. Here's the tl;dr sweet version: they were delightful and attractive to my taste buds. Ping's claims that they make their dumplings fresh daily, and that may or may not be left up for dispute. Regardless, I know it is not store-bought because every dumpling came out a little differently. You knew from the misshapen ones that humans made these. Humans! Making things! Bizarre to find these days. Their food reminds me of my grandma's cooking. The flavors here are custom to Qingdao; Qingdao food is not complex. They don't add countless spices, sugar, butter, or any of that. They make their food with just the ingredients and a little bit of salt, garlic, and maybe some white pepper. We ordered the cold appetizer, and you can choose 3 out of 6 items. We picked pig's ears, sea kelp (seaweed), and cucumber. "Cold eats" is exactly what it means--simply salt, garlic, and white pepper. Not drenched in hot oil or hot peppers as one might expect with pig's ears. The cucumber tasted very plain, but it balanced out the seaweed which had a little more salt than I wanted. Overall, I am glad we picked these 3 combinations because the flavors worked. For our dumpling choices, we ordered the pork and napa cabbage dumplings, vegetarian dumplings, xiao long bao, and 2 steamed buns. Everything except the steamed buns came out on bamboo steamers. You can't beat the prices here, either. The dumplings range from $5.99-7.99 for 6+ pieces. The steamed buns cost $1.50 each. Digging into their xiao long baos was not unlike stepping in to a zen garden. The proportion of dough and filling was absolutely perfect. The pork inside was soft, chewy, and the soup did not set off smoke alarms in my mouth. The way they make their black vinegar dumpling sauce here is potent and the way it should be. There is so much win here. The regular steamed dumplings we had also deserves an honorable mention. I thought they could slim down on the dough and put more filling, but this is okay. Not too salty, which I prefer, and to be honest a little plain. But that is how authentic Qingdao food is, it's going to be a little plain if you are used to having your taste palate loaded with spicy, savory foods. When you put it into that perspective, the food was fantastic. I would probably not order their steamed buns again because there was zero flavor to be found and too much bread, not enough filling. Especially the vegetarian steamed bun, it was maybe 25% filling and the rest bread. I love the service, too, the woman and the older gentleman were so friendly and congenial. It's not easy being in the restaurant industry at that age, so much respect is due because I know they're working hard over there. If you do not speak Mandarin*, you may have a difficult time getting your questions answered. I would take note of this. *I'd like everyone to know that I speak Mandarin. As we wandered around in search for lunch, we came across Ping's Dumpling House. It's just a hole in the wall with a friendly gal manning the dining room. We created our appetizer plate with pig ears, pig tongue and tofu. Followed by lamb and chicken heart skewers, scallop xiao long bao and ja jiang mein. We liked the skewers best. The noodles were ok. We didn't see or taste any scallops but the XLB were still good. We didn't get the appetizer plate so we can't comment on that one...they just forgot. It seemed odd that each of our items were brought out by a different person. Maybe whoever cooks it has to serve it? We receive empty cups along with our utensils but they were never filled. Before I start this review, I need to let the world know that I do not dislike Din Tai Fung. I am a huge fan and I love eating there. What really bothers me about the reviews for this place is that most Yelpers are comparing apples to oranges. Ping's is a hole in the wall where you're in and out, whereas Din Tai Fung is a higher end establishment that is in an area of higher income. Another thing that bothers me is that most people don't realize that recipes change depending on the origin of where the cook is from. Different people from different regions have different tastes. I understand that Din Tai Fung has set the standard for dumplings, but please do not let the bad reviews of Ping's deter you away just because they claim that DTF is better. I enjoy the xiao long bao at Ping's because the skin is a little bit thicker. I had one order of 10 XLB and not even one of them broke. The soup on the inside had a hearty and salty taste. I found it to be perfect. There was a good amount of soup in each dumpling and they all came out steaming hot. I also had the pork, shrimp, and chives dumplings. They were extremely juicy. I wish I came with more people so I can stuff my face with a variety of dumplings. People might say that the service in this restaurant is not spectacular, but think about it, you are in the International District. Well it doesn't since these are chinese dumplings and Din tai fung's carry the Taiwanese ones. Mrs Ping is nice and all but her friend and our waiter was a total fun bus! He doesn't speak english but he speak smiles!!! How can I not love this place! He also made me wish I speak chinese. He was going around to other tables and conversing and chinese, laughing, joking! No, just. No. Pros: The prices. Cons: Everything else. There's a reason why things are inexpensive here, and why people wait so long at Dai Tai Fung. It's called quality, consistency, and customer service. We came here looking for some dumplings without driving too far, and after reading some of these reviews, thought this was a great option. Sure, a hole in the wall, but if it's comparable to DTFung then we're on it. We drove around and around for parking because Seattle. But when we entered... Just... Please no. It smells like pee and fish and dirty water. Everything is dirty. Call me an uppity b-word but it was nasty. Dirty table, dirty cups, dirty teapot, and hair wrapped up with my chopsticks. Even my paper napkin was stained. See my pics! Service: No one was being served or waited on, yet it took her 15 minutes to give us a menu. Another couple entered and stood there not knowing what was what, and a yell from the kitchen of "Sit Down!" had them waiting even longer at a random table. Who is this waitress? We're we offered water? No. Any other drinks? No. Someone asked for sodas, and the waitress woman with the drawn on eyebrows waved her arm in the direction of the health-hazard candy store next door. Just wet noodles, with very little soup. What little soup there was had already leaked out the bottom, and when trying to pick one up, 7/10 fell apart and left the filling on the paper. I can use chopsticks, but it was like.. Trying to pick up an overcooked lasagne noodle with a fork without it tearing from gravity. Total $31.99 (7.99 for 10 XLB + $5 for chicken dumplings) My husband got a bad stomach ache, so we asked for a box. Waitress kept walking. I got up and asked again, and she came to grab the wooden circle containers (what are they called?) And saw there were some left. She said, oh there's some left, and walked away. I asked for a box TO GO and she handed me a small box, that might fit a Double cheeseburger from BK. We had to pile ten super fragile dumplings into a small paper box that got soaked immediately. I went and got my own plastic bag from behind the counter, as she'd already bombed away somewhere else. This is really really important, so I'll say it again: quality, consistency, customer service. When you wait in line (or grab a coveted bar seat) at DTFung, you know what you're getting. Perfect XLB that tastes the same as it did last time. Cleanliness. Free, offered water in clean glasses. Great service. The XLB there are neatly wrapped, with hot soup in dumplings that are somehow sticky (not slippery soaked) on the outside. The exact same order costs me about ~$50 + a well deserved tip. (10.75 for 10-11 XLB, $8 for spicy shrimp dumplings) Leftovers? They'll pack them up for you into neat boxes, put in a sleek gift bag. Wanna pay and leave? Like any other restaurant in common society, they'll give you a bill. It's worth the extra $18, even to just get basic courtesy and sanitation. What's more is I can get a dang parking spot in the car park in under 5 minutes any day of the week. (U District). I can go get a place in line, then shop in a beautiful mall for an hour. 3.5 Stars. I love hole in the walls or mom and pop shops. This is one of them. We came here for their famous XLB ($9 for 10 pork ones) and also ordered their Lamb Soup with goji berries $10). Everything was fresh, home made, and delicious. The only thing I was disappointed by the XLB was that even tho they were juicey and delicious, the skins here were way too thin/ delicate. Even if you carefully picked them up, they would break or crack. The flavor is absolutely top notch, but they aren't as well crafted as the ones at DTF. Also - we came for a late lunch and they were sweeping and dusting mats. I was so afraid dust/dirt would go into our food. Couldn't they have waited until we left? Soup dumplings are on weekends only!!! Came here on a weeknight. The person taking orders does NOT speak English. You have to point at what you want. He got one of our orders wrong. Go figure. The lady who cooks DOES speak English, but she's not that friendly. We ordered a giant steamed bun. They gave us the wrong kind, but since the server couldn't speak English we just let it go. There were string beans in it, and some other odd things. It was microwaved, for sure. It wasn't soft or fluffy. The dumplings were too soggy. The wrappers were coming off and breaking. There was no difference between the pork dumplings and the shrimp and pork dumplings. The shrimp was barely there.. I actually don't think they were there at all. Hot damn this place is awesome, The old guy that sets the table is hilarious, if a bit slow, and Ping herself is seemingly always there, making dumplings by hand, even when the place is empty! They are sooo juicy and delectable I swear I could eat 30 them. Most recent visit was just for the staples: pork and napa cabbage and beef and yellow onion. Both were absolutely spot on. Did I mention they're only $5-7 per dozen? Did I mention how insanely fresh and juicy and delicious they are? Also, the place is cute and funny inside, has a seedy feel for sure but in an awesome way. Its super perfect for sitting on a chilly Seattle day as they serve you a beautiful pile of steaming dumplings! My bf and I have been wanting to try this place out for close to a year, but was always hesitant due to the mixed reviews. Finally went in today and while we weren't completely disappointed, we weren't fans of anything we got either. #1: Green onion pancakes (3.5/5) -- They were decent, but the pancake itself was a bit too thick whereas usually these types of pancakes are a bit more airy so it held a lot of oil. #2: Shrimp and Napa Cabbage dumplings (3/5) -- The dumpling was super soggy and not a fan of the cabbage in it. #3: Pork Pot Stickers (3.5/5) -- I cant point out exactly what we didn't like about it, but it just tasted different from what we are used to... We get pot stickers all the time (it's one of our faves) and never are like "ehh..." but these were a definite "ehh..." moment. They just tasted off. #4: Pork XLB (4/5) -- My bf liked their XLB but I didn't. (This review makes it sound like I'm a picky eater but I'm not, these really just didn't taste good to me). It tastes very different from Doughzone or Din Tai. I can appreciate that all these items are probably more authentic than DZ or DTF, but I just wasn't used to it! We sat where we could see the kitchen and saw the owner making everything fresh. Price point was great! You get a lot for what you pay for. Service was great as well. The lady who took our order was very sweet, she explained to us when to use the sauces for which items and checked in with us to make sure we were using the sauces when we got our dumplings! This is a humble restaurant that does dumplings and other foods right, coming at a reasonable price. This is a restaurant representing the northern-China cuisine, and the "secret recipe" is simply doing the most basic things right. There isn't an extravagant number of dishes on the menu. Dumplings are hand-made and juicy, and the sause they have in the noodle makes me think of what I had 14 years ago when I was a chile back in China. I know it was right when I tasted it, and it's really great. The interior is humble as well, not as luxury or colorful as some Chinese restaurants out there do, but it's comfortable. I'm jealous of the people who work so closely to Ping's, such a great AND cheap lunch spot for yummy dumplings! Dumplings taste authentic, but be aware that the insides of the dumplings are minced very well, different from the chunky insides at places like Din Tai Fung. Xiao Long Baos are offered on Sat and Sun, while they are well made in terms of skin and soup, the taste is a bit off from what I like and used to, maybe it's something particular to the region the owners of this place came from. Service: the old gentleman was SUPER nice and friendly! He brought over tea right after we sat down and had a genuine smile on his face. The staff here don't speak much English, the most fluent one is a middle aged lady who usually work on the kitchen, and occasionally comes out to deliver dishes or ring up customers. p.s. It may be a Dumpling House but I swear it could be changed to Noodle House. I love, love their noodles! First off, they are not your typical Asian noodles at most restaurants in the ID. They're not lo mein, chow mein, rice noodles, udon or yakisoba. I have eaten these types before but they are not as common. And I'm pretty sure they are made from scratch by these owners. My favorite is the julienned pork and noodles. The smell of it is divine. Noodles are soft yet have a nice chewy texture. It's seasoned perfectly in a hot wok so it has the "wok aroma", if you know what I mean. Grandmother's noodles are different. It's more of a soup with noodles. Still delicious! Potstickers are crisp on the bottom and soft skin on the top. The only con is the green onion pancake. It lacks the flavor and chewiness of true pancakes. It's actually very greasy. I really wanted to like Ping's Dumpling House, but this restaurant is just awful. Ping's signature Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings) were the worst dumplings I've ever had. I hate myself for even making the comparison, but I would much rather wait in line 2 hours and pay 2x the cost to go to Din Tai Fung and get myself some soup dumplings which are actually edible. The Xiao Long Bao at Pings had absolutely no structural integrity and ripped apart / lost any trace of soup juice before you can pick the dumpling up. Also, the filling inside was mushy, bland, greasy, and tasted worse than the frozen pot-sticker filling you can buy at safeway. Overall I just couldn't stomach the texture or taste and ended up eating 3/10 dumplings before I just couldn't do anymore. Also, the dipping sauce they provide is overly soy-sauce flavor with little-no ginger. The chow mein was also pretty gross and definitely didn't meet my expectations for even guilty-pleasure Americanized chow mein. Service was also quite lacking. Ping's is pretty small so I understand that there's a potential for some space issues. We saw one couple who was waiting for their to-go order literally be yelled at to "MOVE OVER" and vacate the table for customers planning to eat inside. I get it, but the owner?/waitress could have asked politely. Overall, I would never recommend this establishment. Service was bad and the food is even worse. Please for all that is good, find yourself another place to satisfy your xiao long bao (or any dumplings for that matter) cravings. My hubby and I came here after reading the good reviews on Yelp. We are big potsticker fans and are always up for trying a new place. Sadly, it did not live up to all the 4-star reviews. While the potstickers were cooked just right with a nice crisp to the bottoms, the dumplings themselves were just too oily and heavy. The beef noodle soup had a weird flavor--I couldn't place it--but it just didn't taste right. Too much tendon and gristle too. The boiled dumplings also felt very oily and heavy after eating them. The dipping sauce that came on the side had a weird flavor. I'm not sure what's up with all the weird flavors at this place but I've eaten ALL kinds of Chinese and Taiwanese food throughout my life and this place had some flavors that just struck me as not tasting right. The Grandpa waiter seemed very nice and we were able to communicate even though he didn't speak English. My tums was upset that night after all the oil and heaviness and weird flavors. You have dive bars, why not have dive dumpling houses? That there is this place. The hub and some friends were in the International District for that lame Taco Libre event - um, yeah, lame because there were hardly any trucks that actually served tacos and it was way too cramped and crowded. We made a bee line for this place instead, a true hole in the wall, the kind of place where you hoped that the urge to pee would never ever strike. The place was full and when we finally sat, I made sure not to over visually scrutinize the place otherwise I'd make myself lose my appetite. There is a grocery store attached to the restaurant. After ordering, I mosied over there to see what they had. Well, that was gross and totally took the place of what I didn't want to initially do at the table. I didn't lost my appetite though. We ordered the xlb, a combo that include crab, pork, and lamb dumplings. Then we ordered some beef and onion ones as well as some potsitckers. The pork ones were the best but overall everything tasted quite doughy and a little bland. We were served hot tea and ordered some sodas on top of the tea. The service was sort of like being at family's though. It was kind of funny. When we did order the drinks, I felt like they were going to bring them whenever they damn well pleased. It was a little amusing. The lady and an older gentleman who barely spoke English were unknowingly a comedy duo. Now, my dumpling benchmark is Nan Xiang Xiaolong Mantou. A small ma and pa and maybe a cousin in the back restaurant that serves up little dumplings.. umm can't get any better than that for me. Prices are great, food was good and it was just a quaint experience. Service is a bit slow but i'm really hoping that is because everything was being made fresh...or the owners are just aging. I was short changed on my bill so I just deducted it from my tip. Cash only for 20 dollars or less. I think there is better dumplings in other cities, but for the International district, it does the trick for me. read more

Ping's Dumpling House is a hidden gem! I Lived in Seattle for 9 years and been to different restaurants in China town area zillions of times, finally came by this one (the restaurant sign of these one can be easily overlooked, that is the reason I didn't discover it earlier). I was surprised to find out how good and dumplings are and how clean the restaurant is. Their restroom is so clean that I can hardly remember any other Chinese restaurant has such a clean bathroom (you probably know that many Chinese restaurants are notorious for their bathroom maintenance). Most yelp reviews you need to take with a grain of salt. I wouldn't say this is one of them. This place is on several Seattle "best of" lists, but is, in actually, one of the worst restaurants we have eaten in the city. The food we ordered for takeout was inedible and it wasn't cheap. The dumplings and Xiao long bao were loose, salty, and pungent. The wonton soup was salty and putrid. The boba tea was gritty and clearly made from a mix. We had to toss out all the food from Ping's and order more food from someplace else. Never again. read more

When you are walking down the street, it can be easy to walk right by Ping's. It looks like a cross between a mini-mart and a restaurant. However, if you go inside, Ping's is dumpling paradise! There make multiple types of handmade dumplings that are cooked to order. Pork and napa cabbage, pork and chives, and the lamb dumplings are all really good. For porridge lovers (not my thing though), they also make three different types. And they also have a limited selection of other dishes, as well as bao. As for value, I believe they give you a good amount for the money, and the owner is really nice to boot! Give them a try. Its not fancy, but it is tasty! read more

This place has amazing lamb dumplings. The flavor, service and price is great. I like that you can see the chef making the dumplings right through a glass window.... Kinda like din Tai Fung or Dough Zone but cheaper, faster and quieter Some people talked about the minimal decor and lack of music negatively, but I like how peaceful it is. If you want to throw down more cash, get a little rowdier, and wait in line for a excellent dumplings, go to Din Tai Fung (also get their green beans). So I was craving some dumplings and all.....so we went here for dinner the other night and it was just ok. We got there about 630pm and no one was inside. So we hesitated for a minute to see if they were actually open and if I was at the right place. Read some good reviews of this place and thought to try it out for myself. Definitely a mom & pop place, felt like I was at my grandmama's house. Family run business, lady took our order and we ordered the grandma noodle bowl, beef noodle bowl and the woodear mushroom and chive dumplings. Very nice lady that took the order, slight language barrier but the universal language of pointing to the item on the menu got us through it. As we were waiting, we noticed the little general store off to the side, they sell snacks,cigarettes, and other random things. If you Yelp it, its listed as "Ping's Food Market" instead of "Ping's Dumpling House". hahaha! Too bad they aint sell lottery tickets because I would be scratching away while waiting for the food. Anyways, the dumplings came out, nice & steamy, good size, nice little dipping sauce to accompany, it was just ok in my opinion. Tasted mainly of chive and garlic, not much of any mushroom that I could see inside, just a few bits and pieces here and there. Noodle bowls came out, again, it was just ok. Broth was ok, noodles were just ok. We were pretty hungry so we ate it all up but nothing blew us away at any part of the meal. We were thinking about ordering the big steam bun thing, but decided not to because everything was just ok prior to it and didnt feel that it would be good enough to order more food. While eating, the place started to get more people after 7pm. My favorite part was the grandpa trying to help out with the delivering food, taking orders, sitting people, getting tea etc. He was so happy to be helping and was so nice smiling at people etc. I wasnt sure how to pay the bill, does the lady bring us the bill, do we go up to the front counter area, do we just ask any of the staff? When we were able to flag down the one lady, she just said $22....we checked the prices and it was correct so we just handed them straight cash and we left. I was super excited to try Ping's dumplings after they were featured on the Fungbro's YouTube channel. The food isn't bad but nothing really stood out. Dumplings We tried the pork, shrimp, and cabbage dumplings. You get 12 in a serving. The dumpling wasn't bad but I do wish the dumpling skin was thicker and had some more chew to it, maybe it's just personal preference. The dumplings are served with two dipping sauces, one featuring garlic and the other with ginger. Pot Stickers The pot stickers had a crispy bottom and they actually serve the potstickers upside down to show you the crust on them. I generally prefer potstickers that are fat and juicy and these were skinny potstickers that didn't hold up to the crispy bottoms. Uncle noodle bowl The uncle noodle bowl is Ja Jiang mein. The menu promised handmade, hand cut noodles, and maybe the noodles were but they seemed like pretty standard dry Asian noodles you buy in a box. Disappointing as I love handmade noodles. We also tried the green scallion pancake and chicken hearts skewer. Both were ok but nothing to write home about. Overall, the food is ok but won't satisfy your craving for dumplings. The best part might have been the auntie and uncle working there, they were smiley and you made you feel like you were a visitor in their house. read more

We just moved to Seattle, and decided to check out this dumpling house in Chinatown. We strolled in around 7pm on a weeknight. We were seated right away, and we got our food fairly quickly. All the dumplings we ordered were steaming hot, and clearly had been freshly made. They were delicious!! Highly recommend. We will be back! Dare I say it compares to the infamous Din Tai Fung? Pretty much everything I've had here was good, including their various steamed buns (vegetarian, pork and veggie) and their scallion pancake. Next on the list for things to try are definitely the dumplings, which always look so delicious when I see people order them. The biggest downside to this place is the service. It appears to be a family-owned and run restaurant, and depending on who is serving you, it can take a very long time before you even get attended to, much less actually get your food. And the waitstaff doesn't always speak great English, either, so it definitely helps if you know how to say things in Chinese. But if you're all about good food for a good price, Ping's is definitely worth checking out. I know I'll be returning here the next time I'm in the mood for some dumplings. read more

I've eaten here a handful of times now, and have had mixed experiences. I enjoyed the juicy pork dumplings and the green onion pancake, but the meatless dumplings were just OK. I love their prices and the service. Ping is really sweet and the older man that works here is a cutie too. I converse with them in Mandarin every time I go there, and it seems to make them happy. They also have a convenient store that sells random Asian snacks, candies, newspapers, etc. If you are craving dumplings, buns or green onion pancake, be sure to stop by Ping's for your fix. read more

When I arrived at Ping's Dumpling House I was starving. My friend and I had been excitedly heading to my favorite Ramen Restaurant next door but I had forgotten that they were closed that day. We chose Ping's due it it's proximity to where we were. It didn't disappoint, although the non-dumpling dishes we ordered were either too bland or too salty. I don't understand how people are hating on pings so badly? We're the dumplings life changing? No. But I'm not 100% on board with DTF either. I got service with a smile! A rather blunt smile but a smile none the less. I was quickly delivered adequate dumplings, tea and green onion pancake with a nice sauce. I prefer to mix my own dipping sauce but it was still nice. Everything was a good temperature so I could eat pretty quickly, leaving the lovely lady owner to tell me how impressed she was with my plate clearing skills. Yay?! Will I go back? Was a little disappointed with this place when my juicy pork dumplings came out looking deflated. I come from Monterey park in California which is abundant with Chinese food and just wanted to get a taste of home. The dumplings were very deflated and did not have soup. The green onion flatbread is slightly different than the usual Chinese green onion pancake. It had a thicker crispy texture which I really liked but not enough Green onion in my opinion. I feel bad giving this place 3 stars because it is a small mom and pop shop. I do want to give the juicy pork dumplings another chance when I come at an earlier time. As I left, I saw a dry noodles that looked really good. Perhaps I will come back for that too. read more
