Yelp challenge 2015 176/365 This new place popped up in my Yelp Feed a few times within an hour. Serving both Poki bowls and Teriyaki meat bowls at low prices. Perfect place to please anyones palate without hurting their wallet. Located in Buena Park at La Palma and Beach Blvd in a tiny shopping plaza with limited parking near Coffee Code. Service here is Amazing. A few times the ladies answered me in perfect harmony. Kind of brought a smile to my face. Poki bowl was decent according to the hubsters. Avacado is available for $1.00 more. The only thing is they pack the rice down, so it is super hard to mix everything, especially in a medium bowl. The bowls used are super flimsy. They would be better if they were served in better quality bowls. The poki could also of used more sauce. My beef bowl was good. Buuut, it had a whole lot of rice and not a lot of meat. You may want to ask for extra meat. Meat was well done and super thin, if this is a problem then order the spicy pork or chicken bowl. I kind of like it like this. They serve limited fountain drinks. Coke, Sprite, Root Beer, and Filtered water. The water was actually good. It didn't have that rust taste that most places try to serve. Dinner for 2 was $14.00 with Yelp check in. Man, so many new poke places, I can't keep up anymore. As of yesterday I thought Calipoke in Costa Mesa was going to be my favorite "build your own poke bowl" place, but this place has replaced it. Poki Yaki has the best price, fresh fish, and delicious sauces. It can't get any better than that, unless another new poke place pops up tomorrow and proves me wrong, and probably will. For now this will take the throne. There are two sizes to choose from, regular and large. Regular is only $7.95 and you get 3 scoops of fish. Large is just a dollar more and you get 5 scoops of fish. I'v been to numerous poke places and this is the best price I've seen so far. The price can go high if you decide to add extra sides but there's really no need because everything is already included except for avocado. You only need to pay extra if you want more of the some of the items which already come with your poke bowl. Avocado is only a $1 and this place gives you a LOT, not just few little pieces like some other poke places. For base you can get white rice, brown rice, salad, chips, or half & half of any two. All bowls come with imitation crab meat and seaweed salad. Choice of fish includes spicy tuna, tuna, shrimp, salmon, albacore, bay scallop, and octopus. Sauce choices are Original (ponzu), Oma Oma (green tomato, jalapeno, onion), Creamy Hawaiian (soy sauce, mayo, mustard seeds, sugar), Spicy Mayo, and Ula Ula (spicy level 1 or 2). You can get all toppings or select just the ones you want - masago, onion, green onions, cucumber, wasabi, and sesame seeds. I got mine with white rice/salad, salmon, albacore, tuna, crab meat, and all the toppings, with Ula Ula level 2 sauce. My bowl turned out really tasty and the sauce had great flavor. It wasn't as spicy as I anticipated though. All the fish I got tasted fresh. I know it's sometimes hard to tell with poke bowls because of the sauce, but if the fish is not fresh, even the sauce can't cover it up. I had poke bowls at some places where even the strongest sauce couldn't cover up the fishy taste. It's located in the same center as Odori Sushi and Coffee Code. Parking lot is fairly small so you may need to park on the street. This will definitely be my go to place for poke bowls for now. It also has teriyaki bowls, hence the name Poki Yaki. read more

Located in the same plaza where I had just gone just 6 days prior (Odori Sushi), Poki Yaki is again in the [small plaza with few parking spots]. Once you do find it, you go in and look at the board. Step 1: Choose a size. Want a medium? That shall get you 3 fishies. It'll cost you $7.95 and is in a cylinderical plastic bowl. Want a large? That'll get you 5 fishies and cost you $8.95. Choose: Chips, salad, brown or white rice, half and half Step 2: Choose your fishies. Tuna Spicy Tuna Albacore Shrimp Salmon Scallop Choose three! Step 3: Choose your toppings and sauce. They have white and green onions, wasabi, masago, sesame seeds. I recall one more but it is currently not on the top of my head. They have sauces and I picked original, the ponzu sauce. Put it together, go to the cashier, and they with their smile will tell you the total. Now their poki isn't as good as pokinometry's. Not even close. Their fish is above average and has a good taste, none of the fish smells there. Poki Yaki is too watery (they put too much of the sauce) and did not taste good at the end. Either they need to figure out how much to put when you get half rice + salad or just put less of the sauce. Can't decide between Hawaiian Poke or Teriyaki? This is the place!! This little tiny restaurant is located a stone's throw away from Knott's Berry Farm, behind the Chase bank located off Beach and La Palma Avenue. The place is tiny, with about 6 tables, so chances are you'll be eating on the curb or taking the food to go. We came here on a Tuesday at 5:30 pm, and already there was a line. What I didn't realize is the line is for the Poke. If you want Teriyaki, by pass the line, and walk to the right and order your Teriyaki at the other counter. Karen ordered a regular size Poke with just tuna and the mild shoyu sauce for $8 and change, while I ordered the Tokyo teriyaki plate, which is chicken or beef teriyaki over white rice, 2 gyoza (potsticker dumplings) a salad, and a drink for $7.99. The Poke is made to order, where you tell the girl what ingredients you want in the bowl. If you've been to other Poke places like Pokinometry or North Shore, you know that it can take a while if people don't know what they want. A regular bowl gets 3 scoops of fish, a large gets 5, and it comes with the Krab, cucumber and seaweed. It was faster to order the teriyaki, and I received my order about 10 minutes before Karen. The teriyaki was very good. The sauce wasn't overly sweet, and it was not too thick or gooey like some sauces are. I wasn't thrilled when I got some gristle in my chicken.. especially since the chicken was hacked into small pieces. Oh well. I took a bite of Karen's Ahi tuna. It was ok. You can definitely tell it was previously frozen, as it had a squishy consistency, and a bit of a watery taste. With 100's of Poke places popping up all over the place, its not surprising that there are some places better than others. Overall a decent place. I heard parking can be tough, so if the regular lot is full, either park on the side street or park in the Chase bank parking lot and cut through the bushes. read more

Additionally, I purchased two large bowls, asked for soy sauce and Siracha; I was given two small sauces packs total. It was like pulling teeth to get any more than that from them.The liquid had separated from the fish and they were obviously not fresh. At the final kicker, the prices on their menu have increased by two dollars for each size. Last thing I'll say, is I looked at some of the positive reviews and photos because mine was utter garbage compared to what the reviews said, and it looks like all the positive reviews were from two years ago or more. Hands down my favorite poke place!!!! The service, the selection, and the flavor. I alway end up coming back here for their poke. The Spam Musubi is also a must for me! First time trying this place and it was delicious. The people there are super nice. Especially the lady there. They give you a pretty big portion (they give you large scoops of everything... Sometimes a little extra!). I think it's more food than Pokinometry and it's a little cheaper. The only downside is that they charge you extra for avocado instead of adding a little to your bowl.... But they give you half of an avocado so I guess it works out? It says they charge for extra sauce.... But they didn't. That way you can try some sauces and see which one you like best for next time. Today I came by for bowls with my father and one of the employees touched my father's shrimp with a bare hand! The initial employee that was helping us had gloves but then called the other for assistance with the shrimp. The one without gloves seemed to be doing prep for the vegetables, and then came over, gloves free, to aid the first with my father's shrimp. I love this restaurant and its food but I would appreciate if a manager was on stand-by to watch for these things.Please teach your employees better. I like this place and it's close by where I live, but not my favorite (shout out to The Good Fish!). You can order over the phone, but you can also order in-person. I think it's a little over-priced for the amount they give you and the staff is stingy on the sides, toppings, and sauces. You guys are usually on top of it but tonight's service was just subpar. Inconsistent with the two large bowls. We just bought. There was no one in the store when we arrived and it took 15 min to finish our order after our friends took about the same time. Maybe the person was new but there was another worker that could've read the room, our order was cut short after someone who ordered ahead and paid his $11.80 in cash. The flow of order seemed to have been cut short after the interruption and the pace did not change. By the time the other worker started an order behind us she was almost done and we were just about done. Our orders were missing ginger completely. My bowl wasn't even filled... In between then they were conversing about our friends behind us double checking if their orders of two medium bowls were correct or if they were missing something in the middle of our order. Suggestion would be to finish our order or make it seem like it's not obvious that we can hear what you are saying. Regular is quite filling--especially with 3 proteins and rice. I love poki but there's nothing that's truly impressive or eye-catching that stands out here. Hit the spot for a hot summer night. I didn't want anything heavy and thought I would try something new. I have heard about some of these new "poki" style fast food places popping up with poki bowls and more traditional teriyaki bowls with chicken and beef, but have never tried one. I really don't have nothing bad to say about my experience, except that I have had better poki at traditional Hawaiian spots either on the islands, at a friends house or some fish markets. Aside from that, I wish they had more parking. Taking those two out of the equation, I thought the service was great, prices reasonable (no other benchmarks for me), quality and taste was really all pretty good. I will definitely go back when I am in the area. I will warn some who may be on a quick lunch or dinner break, they make each bowl to order and may be considered slow by some. I realized that is the price to pay when they are customizing each bowl and really trying to get the sauces and sides just right for everyone. The service here is pretty friendly and despite the shop being small it can get crowded during lunch. I always get the large to split with someone and they allow you to do half & half for bases. One of my favorite proteins here is the spicy tuna, great flavor and spice level. Their teriyaki dishes are also good if you aren't a poke fan. Price Wise: Depending on all your toppings and proteins, a large is a good size to share with someone. Poki Yaki is one of the cheaper poke places I've tried ($12 for a large) and they don't charge you extra for each topping you have unlike North Shore. Fast simple and meets the needs!! This little hole in the wall restaurant gave me the refill I needed after a day of traveling. I was craving salty Asian flavors in a bowl and that is what I got. The poke had a diverse selection of toppings sauces and fish. The fish was cheap but ok which is what I knew I was getting into. The sauces where good and the veggies where fresh. The two places were similar but the reason why i came to Poki Yaki was because of Poke Time's chip portions. At only $8.50, you get 3 types of protein with your choice of salad and/or rice (they have brown rice!), seaweed salad, crab salad, and 5 or 6 sauces to choose from. I like the combo of tuna, salmon, and albacore with ponzu, sesame oil, and the spicy 1 sauce (spicy 2 is really hot!). I also like how diet-friendly this place can be. You can easily get a low carb high protein bowl here. They also offer a side of avocado! You order from an assembly line much like Chipotle where you choose all of your ingredients. Alright, I'm a fan. Regular (3 fish) for $9.75 and a large (5 fish) for $11.75. Fresh fish. I personally got a large with 4 scoops of salmon and 1 scoop of shrimp.
