This is me and my sweetie pie's favorite coffee shop in the city. Ok, maybe we're a little biased since we lived in Bernal for many years but it is really a great coffeshop with one of the best back patios you'll find. It is hidden in the back and has fencing all around so on a slow afternoon you can soak up some sun (cuz there is almost always sun in Bernal!!) and relax. This place has become my favorite bernal place for lunch or coffee, epecially since having my son. I wasn't much of a coffee drinker before but now that I am premanently tired its a different story. Anyway, great excuse to take a walk. The staff are friendly, the wraps are yummy, lots of places to sit with different vibes to them. I transition between cafe lattes and chai lattes, both are good. Kids go to Karate down the street. For drip coffee and Mitchells Ice Cream ... great. Was trying to have a breakfast/lunch with my son just to find out that before 11 am it is Breakfast only and no lunch at all. While I know it's not Burger King "your way right away now" there is nothing all that says they only serve certain items at a certain time. When I brought it to to their attention they just didn't "CARE".... thought they were in business to make $$... if I want a wrap at 8 am and nothing advises that I can't, then I should be able to have what I want... The back room of this café is what makes it exceptional. The acoustics make it a secure multi-party room far from any sounds from the world outside it, including the front room where business is conducted. The back is accessed from the front by means of walking down a long, dark, narrow corridor inclined downward at a slight rate of descent without steps, the kind of connective space Frank Lloyd Wright liked to create in the homes he designed. The final touch is the plush homey seating there in the back-lots of cushions along one wall with 2 placement tables lined up against it. The store personnel are super friendly too. read more

The kefta melt is also fabulous! And they have falafel and a veggie sandwich on lavash for those who don't eat meat. I love sitting out on the garden deck with the sun streaming down, as I sip my Italian soda and eat my morning bagel or afternoon lavash sandwich -- it's very peaceful. Drinking a vanilla latte out there if you have a hangover does wonders, too. And if you have kids, the back room has books and toys for your tots to play with. Oh, and I forgot to mention, it's a great place to meet a blind date for a coffee -- very conducive to conversing and getting to know someone. This is a nice little spot. It's very comfortable, and it's nice being able to choose betwen the main seating area, or the quieter back room, or the extremely pleasant garden. The food is solid, and the overall vibe is just really pleasant. read more

went to get my study on at the local coffee shop and lo and behold, the grub is super delish! my niece, mollie c. had the grilled chicken lavash, i had the kefta, which is basically a hamburger but more delicious with mediterranean spices. both were surprisingly tasty delicious and not crazy expensive. and for dessert, not only a bunch of pastries, cookies and whatnot to chose from, including a gluten free option, but also mitchell's! yum, no ube, but whatever, it's right here and i'm studying, and sugar is good for the brain, right? (just say yes) the ambiance is total old school, wood everywhere, even a back area with a fireplace (please light it, it's freezing!) and a patio too. friendly service, free wifi with plugs aplenty, and good music. also, there is a ridiculously cute picture of the owner's son on the fridge with seaweed on his head. it makes me smile every time i look at it. it's a seaweed wig! so funny! read more

Great coffee, friendly staff (CASH ONLY - but there's an atm aross the street), nice backyard patio and a great cold chicken salad sandwich. Fun for bipeds and quadrapeds alike. read more

Big fan of this corner shop. When I lived in Bernal Heights I would spend hours out back in the "jungle" studying Italian. It had been a while since I'd been there and the place is as good as ever. Very local and chill in here. Order yummy sandwiches, lavash, salads and pastries at the walk-up. Have a seat in the front (busy), the back room (chill, sometimes musicians performing) or on the aforementioned back jungle patio! They'll bring your food to you. The falafal lavash is TO DIE FOR. Yum, yum and some more yum. Order a moonpie or whoopie pie if you can't wait until your meal comes. Order a coffee on your way out, it's superb. Enjoy and support this local gem. read more

Sunday mornings is "Music with Enzo" in the kid area, where some guy plays fiddle, accordian, etc, and sings while a room full of tots sing along and jump around. I love coming to Progressive Grounds because of the atmosphere. Okay, there's nothing exceptionally special about their coffee, but this place is nice to bring a friend and chat, or cozy up to the cushioned benches in the back and get some studying done. It has a very homie feel, with pleasant staff and patrons. Also, if you're looking for a bite to eat, their wraps are delicious! This is my go-to cafe. read more

If ratings could be done in pencil, this one would be. I only had the coffee and the wifi, and some ice cream. I have yet to sample aforementioned pastries or meals. The organic coffee was tastey, and the Mitchell's ice cream served was yummy (I had a weak spot for orange sherbet). The one guy working there was friendly, albeit slightly socially awkward. I have to say I was disappointed at the 8:00pm closing time on a weeknight, but there were just a handful of us in there. Also, the summer evening sun was brutal no matter where you sat... even the lovingly-polished floor reflected the setting rays! I love Progressive Grounds, it's the best coffee in my 'hood and it would be my new Cafe Abir except for one thing..... The CHILDREN. Unfortunately while Bernal is full of great friendly people, every irritating person seems to show up here. It's like a bratty unwieldy child gathering space filled with Entitled Parents. I'll still go there but I need to mentally get into that headspace where a-holes don't bother me (kind of the same headspace I need to get into when I go to Target on a weekend when everyone brings their ill behaved children with them and lets them run loose throughout the store). But like I said the coffee is great, snacks are tasty and they even have Mitchell's Ice Cream. The back patio is wonderful and the middle interior area is cozy and great if, as I have said before, there are no small children and jerky parents...... And parents take note: if my nephew who is my favorite kid in the world, age 2 and completely spazztic, threw a tantrum, my sister-in-law would have the common decency to take him out of whatever coffee shop/restaurant/store we were in, you should do the same. read more

had to do a quick coffee run before the library. saw progressive grounds on my yelp and decided to give it a try. house coffee - 2.50 for a medium and 3.00 if it was organic. decided to go with the regular coffee. I drink my coffee black so first sip was alright, but then I kept drinking it.. had a sour taste and not of my liking. maybe I should of opt for the latte instead... overall, coffee was okay, but they do offer an extensive menu on food (lavash wraps) for around $8 and I did see a great space to read and study. parking is not too bad either if you park downer in the residential area. Main Street of cortland are more meter parking. I'll be back next time to try something new and possibly a wrap since they had a big variety of choices. not so sure about the coffee though. read more

What more can you ask for...at 7am Mon.-Fri. the owner knows your name, make you practice your order in french: un cafe au lait et pain au chocolate s'il vous plait? and then you are back out the door... I'd say avoid weekends (the staff are really slow and not as considerate) and enjoy the patio on random sunny days durring the afternoon. We came here on a Sunday afternoon hoping to sit on the patio. We have walked by this place a million times and I was really excited to try it out. The patio was closed so we sat inside. We had our dog with us and unfortunately we got lots of dirty looks and eventually got kicked out. Definitely not as dog friendly as they claim! The decor is eclectic world trinkets and brightly colored walls. Cute and comfortable though definitely could use a little remodeling. We ordered a coffee and a croque monsieur with a Greek salad. The Greek salad was basically just some iceberg lettuce and very heavy dressing. The croque monsieur was good though. I then tried to get on the internet and it was super slow and wouldn't connect. Overall I wanted to like this place but it was a disappointment. The management could definitely spruce it up a bit, fix the wifi, get more fresh food from local farmers markets, add some new furniture and make the experience better. read more

Their coffee is adequate, but you can find better. The chicken salad sandwiches are very good, as are some of the lavash wraps. The pastries are the same ones you find at countless coffeehouses. The outdoor seating is nice. My main suggestion to them is to DEEP CLEAN their cave-like back room. It is absolutely filthy. Update: Stay away from their lattes and mochas. It's a cute spot and is nicely laid out. However, their coffee? What is going on? It tastes dirty, burnt and old. I've tried it 3 times in 3 different visits and it's still icky. Even espresso beverages! Then again, maybe it's just me as it seems like everyone seems to order the coffee? The menu is pretty nice and I can't wait to try the croque monsieur. :) I'll just get coffee elsewhere or make it at home. read more
