Progressive grounds is a very cozy and cute coffee shop with very friendly employees. They have a variety of pastries, eggs, sandwiches, wraps etc. Everything is made well, but you can not compare having breakfast there to having breakfast in Plow. It is just a different type of place: it is a coffee shop that also makes eggs and other things. read more

I love this little neighborhood gem. They've got a nice patio in the back that is peaceful and wonderful to sit in on a nice sunny day. They have a nice selection of sandwiches, smoothies, ice cream, COFFEE, and snacks. There is also a nice middle section where I often see people working or studying and just hanging out. I like that there is some separation between the front entry area which is a little nosier, the middle section where people hang out and work or read, and the back patio where people chat in the sun. The atmosphere is laid back and truly Bernal! I also love that they rotate through local artists artwork on the walls. read more

My four stars are all for the environs. The coffee is fine and the service is good, but it is just such a lovely setting. I usually sit in the back patio which would make my dream backyard, cozy, quiet, and with a beautiful garden. It feels like a haven from the craziness of the Mission, where I live. I can spend forever there. I also went here once with a friend when it was raining, so we sat in the indoor area, which was also great. We ended up talking for hours without realizing it. I love Progressive Grounds. I am going to miss it when I move away from Bernal Heights in a few weeks. In fact, I am writing this while there and procrastinating on a paper that I am supposed to be writing. I write most of my papers in this place. They have no problem with me sitting down and writing for 4-6 hours (I tip good). The prices are very reasonable, $3 for a large soy latte, yes please! Grad school would not exist without caffeine, and the cheeper the caffeine, the more I can consume. I am also a huge fan of the Falafel Wrap. It is quite good, not as much spice as I usually like and the Tahina could use a little something (its a bit watery), but it is a solid lunch item that gets me through the writing blues. And they now are taking credit cards! The back room is a great study space with comfy seating and power outlets for laptops. I always bring headphones since invariably children or someone with a loud voice will show up for awhile. It can get crowded in the back room though, only rarely have I not found a place to sit and if it is nice the back patio is a great place to be. read more

actually, all i had was a smoothie. and it was good, but i have definately had better. the sandwhiches were kind of pricey, which is why i didn't get one. they're cash only, which is typical in SF. and i didn't have enough cash! it's pretty spacious, the bathroom is clean, and yes, i would definately go back. if i were in the area. read more

This cafe has the BEST Lavash wraps I have ever had. My most favorite one is the Salmon, Spinach and Cheese wrap. Absolutely YUMMY! It's super packed and then grilled on a hot panini press. Mmmmm, I always get a Greek salad on the side. It's pretty big and has the perfect amount of fresh Feta cheese. I don't really drink the coffee here, I just come here for the wraps. read more

I haven't tried any of the food everyone is expounding on. In fact, whenever I am in here, my eyes go straight to the coffee menu, after they skim the lovely view of the ice cream freezer, of course. I have tried the chai and am also a big fan of small, double lattes. One drawback is that they don't offer the option of sweetened or unsweetened chai, as Martha Brothers does down the street. I know chai is traditionally unsweetened, but hey, save me from having to pour half a container of sugar in it, would ya? I am a big fan of the back patio, even over this weekend when we were in between bad and worse weather, I was on the patio because it's so intimate and down-played. I'd also like to give the Sunday afternoon guy, Mike (I think that was his name) a high five for being uber-friendly and striking up genuine and interesting conversation. Some of the girls during the weekday, (names unknown) are not nearly as cordial. read more

Lavash? I had the tuna melt lavash which was pretty good. However, they forgot that I ordered that and went in, out, around, to the back patio and back to the front trying to figure out whose tuna melt it was. It would've helped if they said "Tuna Melt Lavash!" or called out my number, considering we were given numbers for our order. After a while, I inquired about my order and whaddaya know? It was my lavash sitting there on the counter all along. I forgive them though because that was some delicious lavash. read more

I love going there for it's homey atmosphere where you can appreciate the art on the wall and watch families with their babies and doggies! In terms of food, I LOVE their Salmon lavash as well as the eggplant lavash! Sooooo good! Come in and enjoy the warm service! read more

My friend and I came here for a knitting/crochet meetup. I had never been here before otherwise. I was hungry so I ordered their special : a turkey sandwich with tomato aioli sauce or something like that. It was pretty yummy and with tax came out to be almost $7. I ate the whole thing and felt really full. It was the cheapest lunch option they had on their menu. I was tempted to get a lavash but did not want to pay more for it. I was also tempted by the baked goods they had displayed at the counter but I had to restrain myself from buying any. They also have Mitchell's ice cream which is cool. The back dining area where we sat for the meetup was quite cozy. The seating area along the walls looked especially comfy with added cushions. I don't normally hang around coffee shops but this one has a real comfy feel to it. If I did this would be a good place. read more

Food and drinks here are impressive given the small size of the preparation area. They make a decent coffee that ices well, and their gazpacho is no frills, low-to-no oil, and deliciously refreshing on a hot day. I come back time and time again for the falafel lavosh, which is cooked so perfectly and tightly that barely a crumb comes off when you take bites. It's a perfect dipping sandwich. Lovely variety of seating areas to choose from, including a cozy fireplace room and a brilliant elevated patio lined with trees and flowers. read more

I live 2 blocks away so can't beat the convenience of this place. I've studied for many a final in the cozy back room and had fun with friends in the back patio during nice weather as well. The wraps are great, especially the salmon/spinach one. The staff are nice, the guy that's usually at the register almost always brings up a topic of conversation whether it be the logo on my shirt or the laptop in my hand. The drinks and food are good here, everything is just a little more expensive than most cafe's though. Martha's down the street is nearly a dollar cheaper for most beverages. Progressive was perfect before recent price increases but I will still go there because it's a very cool atmosphere. read more

I second Sarah's review! The tuna melt is incredible and I will go out on a limb and say that the salmon melt is a surprisingly meltily drippily good thing as well. I have to say, as an addict and critic of baked goods, the treats here are disappointing. Nice spot to study. They have cozy pillowed covered couches , as well as a patio on the back. I heard their coffee was pretty good too. I realize they're a coffee shop, but I actually came for the ice cream (Mitchell's!). +Wifi is free! Only negative is the fact that it doesn't have the coffee shop aroma, rather it reeks of Middle Eastern food (they also do lunch here too). read more

It's a nice place to sit on the back deck in the morning while gnashing on an excellent everything bagel with cream cheese, lox, capers, and all the veggies. They changed ownership maybe 3 years ago to a couple of really friendly guys (from Morocco, i believe), upgraded the interior and the deck, and started adding the delicious other food options mentioned by the other reviewers here. I like the coffee and smoothies, too, but the coffee at Martha's has my heart, leaving me coming here only once or twice a month. read more

I love this place. If the owners are working, I'm welcomed in with a huge smile and a friendly greeting. The coffee is strong. The food good. I love the Marco's Chicken Pesto (I add hot sauce to it..mm.....). Sometimes, they'll light the fireplace in the back if it's a crappy day outside. The back patio is my favorite place to enjoy a cup of coffee on a sunny day. A homey, friendly, neighborhood vibe and decent food. I love it. read more

I can't really comment on the food here, I think I've gotten ice cream, maybe a coffee or tea.. not enough to really form a strong opinion. But I really don't go to cafes for their food, usually. This is just one of the nicest places to sit and read or write in the city, in my opinion, and it's in one of my all-time favorite neighborhoods in the city. I like that there is a choice of seating areas with different atmospheres-- sociable and sunny up front, cozy and quiet in the back where there is a fireplace and tables, and a lovely patio for nice days. Only major drawback is that it's popular, and especially on a rainy day when the patio is not a good option, it can be hard to find a seat. I think they could fit a couple more tables in that back room, I wish they'd try. I have mixed feelings about the kid complaints in some of other reviews. It's true, there are pretty much always people with children there, and it can get a bit distracting when parents choose to ignore the noise their little darling is making. But the toy bucket makes it clear the owners want it that way. Bernal Heights has been a family neighborhood for a long time, and those families are probably the locals, so, this is their turf. Them and the dog people who stop here for a coffee after their walk on Bernal Hill. So, it's basically part of the scenery here, take it or leave it. read more

I live in the area and this is a good neighborhood coffee-house. Free wifi. Coffee is good, and so is the food, especially the various wraps they make; it's a good place for lunch. There are three sections: the front, the back room, and the outside. The front is normally crowded, and loud; but good for people watching. The back room is more quiet, if you want to read or work on your computer (though because it's not so well lit it's kinda like a cave). And it's also where the kids hang out, and where they occasionally have live music, so can get noisy there too. The patio is very nice and sweet if the weather is sunny and warm. It's a good spot. In addition, it's very family oriented- mom and dads bring their babies and children all the time, which is kinda cool, considering most cafes aren't like this. read more
