I cannot properly express my disdain for this place without having my review removed for breaking Yelp's Terms of Service. So, I will do my best. Here is the low down: When in law school, you get pretty sick of studying at the same law school infested haunts around campus and the library can get a bit too intense for my liking (plus florescent lights put me to sleep). So, my study partner and I decided to give Quack's a try since it was close to both of our houses in Hyde Park. We walk in, sit down, and begin to study without buying anything, although we fully intended to. Next thing I know, this dreadlocked barrista is standing over me saying "Buy something or leave." So, what do I do? I stay and become determined not to buy anything. After three or four times of him telling us to leave, my friend caved and bought a coffee. As I looked around, it seemed that we were being picked on because we were the only non-hippie types in the shop. That irritates the crap out of me. Cool areas of Austin are not reserved for hippies alone. Aren't hippies supposed to be inclusive? Love for everyone? Anyway, I am glad that I have never spent any money at Quack's. read more

Re: Incident on Sunday October 12th around 12:45ish To the guy behind the register (Michael?) who refused to wash his hands after being asked to do so for digging into his ears and scratching his hair/head all over the counter. No it was not ok and we don't want your germs, dna or skin cells with our food. To the staff who took over and tried to make me feel like a problem because I complained shame on all of you. In the future I think that the people who handle money should not handle fthe food or at least wash their hands in between tasks, or wear gloves, different gloves obviousely. What is really upsetting is if employees pick their nioses, ears, and scratch their head (the same way dogs scratch all over tjhe food counter) in front of us the customers, what are they doing when they aren't seen? In the back? I've had my share of crappy service and snark, eye rolls but to add also very poor hygiene and unsafe food handling? That was too much. I spend way too much of my paycheck at Quacks haha. The service fast and super friendly, and they keep their long lines moving. So hard to recommend a single pastry because they're all incredible! Your day can't suck if you start it off with a cinnamon pull-apart and a hot cup of coffee. Get there early before they run out of their oh-so savory croissants filled with such things as ham and cheese, cheddar and jalapeño, and pesto and asiago. Only gripe is that I wouldn't recommend the iced coffee. You're better off going next-door for a cold-brew at Dolce Vita. read more

Previously, in another life, this bakery was called "Hyde Park Bakery" and was much smaller. Its now grown to inhabit 2 shop spaces and has added many more tables for people to sit and chat, cruise the internet or play a scintillating game of scrabble. At least that's what folks were doing when we went in for treat after a holiday lights stroll along nearby 37th street. If you're a muffin person, the blueberry muffins are A+ here and the blueberry bran are my absolute favorites because they're enormous and I can feel like I'm eating something healthy and get my sweet tooth craving satisfied at once. The cupcakes are equally as ginormous although I'm sure not nearly as healthy. My daughter had the lemon meringue cupcake and I had the carrot cupcake both equally delicious. I had an americano coffee and my daughter had the steamer both of which were tasty. I have to agree that the service here is hit and miss and can tell you that this is a long standing tradition here as it seems to be in most coffee places if you ask me. I don't come here for the service though, its just something you come to expect. There is a sign that says "Please order at the register" which may be a good reason why people think the people behind the counter are rolling their eyes, most people don't see the sign and stand at the bakery cases for quite awhile wondering why no one is waiting on them. Its a pretty stupid system, most of us are used to ordering at the bakery cases and pointing to what we want. While we were there, an adorable toddler came in and walked straight up to the glass case displaying all the luscious cupcakes, pressed her face to the glass with her arms outstretched as if hugging the case and moaned "mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm." I heart Quack's Tucked in the eccentric Hyde Park area this cafe has plenty of character. The baked goods are delish! The tiramisu is just perfect. I actually saw Mr T. there one day arguing with another customer over the last piece... well, no that didn't actually happen... but for the sake of musing indulgence just imagine "I pity the foo who eats that cake!" The coffee and drinks are all above par and never disappoint. They even have vietnamese iced coffee yum. The staff is one of the friendliest barista/coffee house crews I've seen in Austin. Every one behind the counter is nice, informative, efficient and appears to enjoy working there, instead of the prevailing grumpy Austinite baristas who were unable to channel their coolness into a fulfilling career. The only con is a big one if you're the type who camps out in coffee shops to get serious studying or work done, this place is uber cramped and loud. I feel like I'm on an airplane, tiny uncomfortable seat, tiny table I can barely fit my books and eats on, and annoying neighbors jammed into the same row... So unless you think the loud new age hipsters two feet from you are the next voice of post-modern existentialism you may want to stuff your headphones as deep as if Ashton Kutcher and Charlie Sheen were lecturing you on fidelity. Despite this one drawback all the charms of Quack's make it a top pick in my book. Bottom-Line: Great coffee and baked goods if you don't mind being packed tight with some noise. read more

Other than the baked goods, Quacks does most things 'ok'. The design is one of typical Austin apathy. Kitschy and offbeat, the walls battle with one another as to which one is painted the best color (two finalists: canary yellow and flamingo pink). The furniture is a yard sale hodge-podge, with assorted knickknacks and a former dresser masquerading as a counter. The staff produced the bare minimum for customer service, but at least I was greeted. Although Quacks is technically a bakery, it doesn't have a bakery feel. They serve coffee but it doesn't feel like a cafe either. It FEELS like a basement apartment where the inhabitants were drunk one day and couldn't decide on a design theme. With that said, I can see Quacks as a great place to camp out in your PJs with your laptop and a massive cupcake shielding your face from the glare of the sun. However, I'm not cramming for an exam or avoiding my housemates because they left a sock on the door...the front door. Nope, I'm a guy who leaves a sock on my own door to remind myself to go do my goddamn laundry or just because I want myself to know that it's time to love myself. An old-town looking bakery, the place is vintage clean, the lighting of the place is on point, and the energy of the place is just right enough for a conversation or to cram for an exam. Here, dessert lovers can find almost all their favorite desserts in the bakery menu and grab a meal with the deli menu. I got the Cherry Danish (recommended by the cashier at the time) and Sour Cream Coffee cake. You're talking around 4-5 bucks for too much dessert. I had a really tough time downing it all and I eat alot so this place is worth your dollar. My friend got the organic free trade coffee and a pull apart cinnamon roll. She was impressed and it was just a success overall. You know, supporting free trade and satisfying cravings, stuff like that. I love Quack's! I love how they're open til midnight. I love how their shortbread cookies are decorated to holiday. I love any cupcakes, and their's are moist and perfectly sweet icing. I love the main bakery lady who is helpful and always friendly (one of the other bakery girls, however, is not so friendly- she stared at me while I pointed to the cookie i wanted to order, told me "i can't see"- but that's alright). Yummy sandwiches, the iced coffee is pretty strong. Minor note: the music can be a little loud, so if you're studying you might wanna bring headphones! Quack's is a great stop and go place where you can pick up a sweet treat and be on your way. The interior of this place isn't that conducive to studying due to the lack of tables and outlets. Half of the space is dedicated to the bakery display, with the other half devoted to a sitting area. In addition, I think their drinks are pretty average, so stick to the baked goods. Other than that, I think Quack's has excellent cookies and cupcakes, and they always have really adorably decorated sugar cookies (got a ghost for Halloween) that make for a great gift. The tables can be small if you need a lot of space to get work done but a good background music selection is usually present. The staff is always friendly and willing to offer suggestions. If I got to eat cookies and drink coffee all day, I might be that upbeat too (or I would get some shortbread love handles cause I loooove that shortbread). I finally found a place where the pastries are the perfect sweetness for me. I can count on Quack's for a cupcake that won't leave me worrying about getting diabetes. Since their cupcakes change daily, I don't know half the time what I'm getting. But the cupcakes always turn out to be delicious, and I especially like their cupcake icing. I once got a mint chocolate cupcake expecting the icing to be sweet. However when I bit into it I was amazed by how delicious it was and how it wasn't...sweet. I think I gobbled that thing down in one bite...kind of like how Patrick did with his chocolate bar in Spongebob, and then blamed Spongebob for eating his chocolate bar since he didn't remember eating his. I do frequently come here, especially after eating at nearby restaurants like Hyde Park Bar & Grill. A few times though Quacks ran out of pretty much everything! Quack's has excellent baked goods, but as other reviews have noted, it's lackluster in most other areas. The coffee is uniformly mediocre, the staff isn't the friendliest, the A/C is no match for the Austin summer, and the wifi is spotty. Yet still I keep going back to Quack's, mostly for the convenience factor (it's walking distance from my apartment). It also has a worn-in, cozy ambiance that I appreciate. During my last visit, a little boy was blowing out the candles on his birthday cake at a corner table, and a scruffy old guy with a white beard strummed a guitar outside on the curb. This place is far enough away from campus to not be overcrowded all the time like coffeeshops along the so-called Drag. It has several pros but, for me, the cons have convinced me never to go there again. Here's why: 1. I sometimes like to drink decaf coffee. Unlike Pacha Mama on Burnett Rd., Quack's does not grind decaf beans to order. Instead, they keep a big plastic bin full of who knows how old ground decaf. If I'm paying a premium price for coffee, I expect a higher level of quality. 2. The pastries are delicious and can satisfy your sweet tooth, whether it ranges from a preference for chocolatey things, to sugary ones, to frosted ones. The prices, however, are too damn high. The last time I went, I was so pissed because I ordered a chocolate croissant to go, justifying the high price by telling myself that the pleasure of eating it would be worth the money. I spoke clearly, enunciated every syllable, made eye contact with the barista, and guess what? When I got to my car and I looked in the brown bag, I was sorely disappointed. No chocolate croissant. Instead, the guy gave me a nasty scone. 3. It is always dirty in here. I wish the staff would take the time to walk around every once in awhile to wipe tables down and sweep. 4. I have never once had a pleasant exchange with a person behind the counter. No one ever smiles, or thanks me for coming, or offers a cheery hello. This doesn't make me feel good about supporting a non-chain coffee shop. In fact, I always walk out feeling upset for having spent my money at a jerky place. Whatever happened to good ol' customer service? So, in conclusion, I won't be going back to Quack's since there are many other coffee shops in Austin that offer a more pleasant, reasonably-priced, clean experience. read more

Rude, rude rude! Quack's must have the worst service in town. I just moved to Hyde Park two weeks ago and have been to Quack's 3 times. Each time the service got worse and worse. Apparently the uber-cool hipsters behind the counter have much more important things to do than, ya know, wait on customers. And rather than "service with a smile" they deliver theirs with the ubiquitous roll of the eyes. I have seriously never seen grown men roll their eyes indiscriminately as much as these guys. Stale cupcakes, watery iced coffee, snotty baristas....With so many cool coffee shops in this city, why patronize a business where they treat customers like crap? I'd give 4+ stars for the bakery. Beautiful Beautiful and Creative Bakery. A bit too sweet on several of the receipes.. but Hey! I get it they are desserts. However, as other have noted the staff (and daytime staff particularly- snooty boy is the worst) can be really rude. They act like they are doing you a favor by ringing you up and getting you what you ordered. I tip well, but always feel screwed when I do it here. You have to ask for the basic things, like say a plate or water and they act like they hate you. Not to mention most everytime I've ordered a large 20 oz and they charge me for a large and give me a small 16 oz or even 12 oz MANY MANY MANY times. Super Lame! Some of the staff are particularly close-minded and I feel like I am on America's Next Top Model (or Junior HS) being judged, while I stand in line for coffee. A couple of the staff seem really nice, but that doesn't matter when they aren't the ones assisting you. Also, -2 stars for the worst cafe internet in Austin. Seriously dial-up is lightening speed compared to this. They use Less Networks, which can be annoying anyways, due to the log in and having to log in multiple times for multiple browser windows. But at least, in other cafe's/bars that use Less N, you don't get logged off every few minutes (Losing everything you typed!) and it isn't nearly as freaking slow. They usually have interesting art on the walls. And the Empanadas are really greasy and yummy. read more

I have been trying cafes around Austin for two months now, and Quack's is by far my favorite. Ambiance-wise, if I had to put words to the interior I'd have to go with Grungespresso -- in an endearing way -- and the quality of their espresso beats most other shops by miles. It was also here that my best friend was coerced, begrudgingly, to enter a coffee shop for the first time (he isn't keen on the bean) and it's also where he discovered a deep love for their baked goods. According to him, the cherry danish is better than the other pastries he's sampled as I have dragged him along on my journey across the espresso river of Austin. I came here with a friend expecting just to get a coffee or tea because it's a bakery and I'm allergic to eggs. Turn out they had 4 different kinds of vegan cupcakes, a vegan cookie, and a vegan cake truffle. I tried the cake truffle and it was pretty awesome. It was a nice surprise to be able to eat something here, so thanks for the vegan options! Also my earl grey tea rang up as something like $.75 cents which is reasonable for a tea bag + water but I always seem to get charged like $2.50 for this at other places. Best chai tea I have had in the entire world. And I've had chai tea all over. I get it hot. They make it from scratch. Yes, from their own personal spice blend, and not some syrup mix like Starbucks or other "tea houses" do. They have alternative milk options for vegans (which I opt for). Other vegan indulgences there include: select cupcakes, chocolate/butter cups, and more. The almond and peanut butter cups are amazing and well worth the buy. Quack's used to be an occasional treat, but since I have discovered their zucchini bread and no longer have internet at home, it has become my regular hideout. The staff is nice and it's laid back. There are always a few parking spots right in front on the street, but there is also a lot next door. The zucchini bread is incredibly moist and delicious, just sweet enough, and not overly spiced. Goes great with tea. :-) The cupcakes are great too, but that's a little over the top for me. I like to sit outside, use the computer, and smoke. If you ever see me with my domino box out on the table, please join me! I am always looking for someone to play with. Only complaint is that many of the tables are wobbly, but that's not worth docking a star for. read more

Quack's is a great for either Sunday morning brunch or a study break in the afternoon. I was there 2 days in a row last week - that means it must be good, right?! The drip coffee is perfectly passable. The frosted cookies seemed a day or two old, but still tasty. I tried the chocolate cupcake with whipped pink frosting and was a tad bit disappointed; the cake was slightly dry and the icing lacking in flavor. It was absolutely gorgeous to behold! Just not so pleasing to the taste buds. I've also sampled the cherry turnover (delicious! but would be better served warm) and the classic cinnamon roll. I didn't get the 'I'm too cool for you' vibe from the staff. They were pleasant and quickly took orders from the long-ish line. I feel extremely silly for having lived in Hyde Park for so long without having tried this place before. That being said, I was glad to see it was steadily busy the entire time I was there (which was a long time, I might add). I love the neighborhoody feel of this entire block, and Quack's doesn't disappoint in that area. I was sitting inside waiting for a friend when a gentleman approached to regale me with tales of the savings I could enjoy at Quack's, if only I'd purchase a Go Local card. My friend showed up just in time to rescue me, but it was a sweet gesture on the gentleman's part. I love that everyone in this area is so familiar. Friend in tow, we examined our choices of fare. I almost died when I saw the shortbread skunks - adorable! However, my friend and I decided on the czech tea cake instead. It was delicious, not too sweet, and perfectly paired with a mocha. In addition to being a great place to hang out or visit with a friend, Quack's has great prices on bread. This places smells like my college years - dusty and delicious. Like a mix of sitting in a library and eating amazing baked goods. (No, i'm not saying it's dirty - just NOT sterile!) Some things aren't as good as others, but definitely recommend the cookies and macaroons. . I used to love the chilli chocolate cookies they had - not sure if they still have them! It has a feeling that's specific to Quack's. I think the only reasons I don't go more often are a) calories, and b) an inescapable feeling of the past, as I lived virtually across the street in my UT years. Many thanks to other Yelpers for recalling the history of this establishment. When I first visited Austin, the old Intergallactic Cafe was one of the high spots in town. I just stopped by for a double cappucino and a bran muffin. The cap was totally delicious -- perfectly made from excellent ground coffee. The muffin tasted like cardboard; it didn't look all that great in the pastry case, but there was nothing else that looked better to me. I like the ambiance a lot. Nice music, happy people. The toilet in the men's rest room has a green "US Government Unclassified" sticker on it! The door to the room bars entry to anyone not wearing shoes and shirt. I've never had romantic thoughts about a cookie until I went to Quack's. Yeah, that may sound a little weird, but you too would think differently once you had either their Old Fashioned Oatmeal or Salty Oat cookies. Mere words cannot describe how good these cookies are. It's something you have to experience for yourself. The other cookies and baked good are also (for the most part) excellent. The decorated cookies are immaculate, pristine, edible works of art. I once accidentally stood between these cookies and a little girl who had taken a seat at a nearby table just so she could stare at them. She politely (yet sternly) asked me to move because she couldn't see the cookies with me in the way. The employees here are mostly disaffected, sleep-deprived college student-types. One of the guys who works there looks an awful lot like the drummer from The Killers (Ronnie Vanucci). He's almost always there every night I've gone. I'm not sure what his problem is, but he's always got this seriously pissed off look on his face. When you order, he barely responds and never, ever cracks anything that could be misconstrued as a smile. Half the time, I can't tell if I'm going to get the cookie I ordered, or if he's going to take me outside and try to kick my ass. Fortunately, I've always walked out with a cookie. Pastries are great. Yummy cookies - Salty Oat. Great cupcakes and breads. They are rude... All the time! 6 years in this neighborhood and I should apparently be thanking them when I go get my baked goods there. There is a real sense of entitlement there! I have yet to order something bad here. This is a great go-to spot for Hyde Park area pastries and some coffee. Favorite bakery and hangout I've found in Austin so far! The Ginger Krinkle cookie and the themed sugar cookies are fantastic! The coffee is consistently good as well. If you're there on any given weeknight, there is a 30% chance you'll run into us. Two quick recommendations: 1. Stay open later than 11pm. 2. Make a salty oat cookie without raisins. Let people add raisins post-production. Quack's is my favorite bakery ever. I used to go to Quack's all the time. The Texas pecan pie is delicious and I love their pastries and cookies. It warms my heart whenever I see their selections (they always have at least one cookie that's shaped like a snowflake, cat, or something!) Also, I think that they have one of the best coffee in the Hyde Park neighborhood. I also really like the lighting at the cafe during the day.. I just think that the music is too loud sometimes, and it's really dark there after the sun goes down. read more
