Place is located upstairs in the back of a strip mall....would never have found this place on my own....the location is as sketch as can be...you go up these stairs on the side of a building and when you enter you'll find a couple mom and pop shops operating together. Its almost like a caring village--everyone helps eachother. Loved it. Anyway, we ordered a medium sized catfish for two and some banh khots. I've never had them but supposedly these are more coconut-y. They were piping hot and fresh when they came out. Perfect on a bed of lettuce dipped in sauce. The catfish was perfectly soft and moist. We rolled them into the rice papers along with all the veggies and condiments and dipped them into either some sort of fish sauce or tamarind sauce. During the meal I found out I suck at rolling rice paper rolls...but I was able to make a few on my own thankfully. Very hole in the wall and run by one older sweet auntie. She always makes me feel like I'm family. I generally talk to her in Vietnamese so not completely sure how smooth the process will be in English. Food is absolutely delicious! The 30-40 dollar fish is perfect for 2/3 depending on hunger levels. Bigger fishes do tend to be juicier since they're fatter so keep that in mind! We came here based on Yelp reviews. Ordered $50 fish for 2 & had left over to take home. Fish came out pretty fast after we sat down, it probably was precooked before. Skin was crunchy but the meaty part was a bit dry for my liking. They served very small amount of bún & not too much herbs & small amount of pickled carrots & daikon.The lettuce was plenty for 2 people. We had to order extra bun for us. The server lady was nice. He quickly found five or so restaurants for us to choose from, everything sounded great since we essentially skipped lunch to go hiking. Ultimately, the Yelp review from friend Amy L swung the vote (many thanks!). The three of us arrived right as the sun started setting, so walking from the parking lot to the rear of the building and up the stairs felt rather sketchy. To be fair though, there were plenty of cars parked back there with what seems to be apartments on the opposite side. Speaking in Vietnamese, my friend ordered Cá Nướng, roasted catfish. While we initially wanted to order a small, the lady told us that they had ran out so gave us a medium for $5 more. In addition, we also ordered a plate of Bò Nướng Lá Lốt, grilled beef with guised leaves. Finally, we had wanted to order the Bún Đậu Mắm Tôm, the fried tofu pork with vermicelli, but the shrimp paste guy had left for the day. Their attentiveness was exceptional, and the food came out quick. Turns out the medium sized fish was perfect for three people. Amazingly flavorful with the pineapple and tamarind dipping sauces, we devoured everything and had little left over. The beef was also deliciously succulent, and the soup was a perfect complement. Grilled catfish is a great comfort food for my family. Wrapping up a crispy, tender morsel of fish along with vegetables and vermicelli noodles is something I crave very often. I ordered the large catfish and I must say, it was cooked very well. 9/10 I noticed that they also had a ton of Vietnamese classic dishes on their menu which I'll be back to try another time. I would HIGHLY recommend calling ahead. Even with me ordering it the day before, I had to wait an extra 30 minutes which wasn't very ideal but I also understood that they have a ton of orders. Service: 3.5/5 for the timing as I wish that if I ordered something that it would be prepared by the time I arrived, especially if it was calls in the day before. This spot is tucked up top behind Saigon grocery which can be a little difficult to find but once inside, it's like you're transported back to Vietnam. I appreciate how easy it is to order over the phone, pick up, and enjoy a delicious meal at home. The catfish is always perfectly prepared, the sauces are consistently amazing, and the price is spot-on. I always order the Small Catfish ($30), which comes with all the fixings to make your spring rolls. In my opinion, the small size is enough for 2-4 people, though if you're especially hungry, it might be more like 2-3. For those who haven't been, you can access Quan Ca SaiGon directly by driving to the back of the Saigon Supermarket parking lot. Ordered takeout from Quan Ca Saigon in Garden Grove and went with the XL fried catfish. Everything traveled really well and was still fresh and delicious when we ate it at home. The catfish was crispy on the outside and tender inside. They included everything needed to make your own spring rolls at home. Rice paper, fresh veggies and herbs, and a variety of sauces were all packed separately and thoughtfully. It was fun putting everything together ourselves, and the flavors were excellent. Last Saturday I went there around 5PM and ordered a medium size baked catfish ($40) to go and less than 5 minutes later my order was ready. I asked the lady (owner?) why it was so fast and she said Saturday was a busy day so they had baked the fish in advance and she picked the best one for me. I went home and immediately started my dinner. What I found was that the fish was so dry, the meat on both sides of the head was hard and not edible. The whole fish looked like it was deep fried not baked. The meat inside the fish was dry and tough like jerky. I couldn't believe they sold me this horrendous fish. So much for the "best" fish. I have been going to Nam Giao which is just a few steps around the corner for years and was never disappointed, their baked fish were 100x better. So if you never been before it's in the Saigon market and go upstairs because that where it is. There are a lot of signs if you don't go through the main entrance but if you do go to the main one just as a worker if you are lost and they will tell you where to go. Once I walked for like 2 mins up the stairs and kept walking finally found it. I called an hour before hand and they still weren't ready with my fish so I would call an hour and a half ahead from the time you want to pick it up. The lady was working alone and she was quite busy handling customers that were dining in. I was the only one picking up. I had to wait 15 mins there until she packaged it and took payment and then I was on my way home. When I ate it at home it was not warm as I wanted it to be which was okay because the lettuce, rice paper, white noodles and sauces made up for it being not warm. This is such a hole in the wall, "if you know, you know" type of place. In our first time here, I called in for an order for 2 medium fish $40 each. I had no clue where or what this place was about but my friend sent the yelp page to me and I sent my bf to go pick it up. Since we were both unaware of how to navigate and get to the restaurant, he went through the long way and told me he was almost creeped out by the entire walk because there were just empty shops and not much else going on the building. I've been going here to get the oven roasted catfish. The location is hidden but once you find this hidden hole in the wall, it's amazing. The lady that cooks the food and also handle the front is a very sweet individual and has a straight shooter personality. Sometimes Vietnamese ladies will try to speak loud and demand their order even if they came after you. I had assumed she would fill those ladies order first but nope, she would politely tell them they had to get in line and wait. First come first serve. I was like she's my type of people. That's why I am a repeat customer. Yes, you have to climb some stairs but think of it as getting your steps in. One can gain access through the supermarket as well. There are other restaurant vendors besides her and it seems like they work as a team when you order food. Because the menu is for all the vendors there, team work. I've seen the lady's daughter also helping her out because it can get busy. If you don't speak Vietnamese, I think the other vendors will be able to assist. Never knew second floor existed above the supermarket. She's busy but still accommodates to her best as what looks like 1-2 WHOAman operation. So it was really confusing to get into this restaurant but we went through the back door way since we didn't know the main entrance is through the super market but the super market closed at 7:00pm. It looks very sketchy to go through the back stairs LOL! The atmosphere is not much and there's a lot of fans going on because it's extremely hot in here! It was my first time ordering for pickup at this location after families and friends tried the catfish here and liked it. I also read other reviews about their catfish from this place. This is what I think: First of, the place was hard to find. I was a bit lost in the parking lot and had to call my dad to figure out where. You walk up the stairs (there might be more than one stairway up but the one I found was the "front" of the super market). When you get up, it is like a maze. The only way to go once you're up there is to the right and you keep going all the way to the other side of the supermarket on the second floor. This place is at the other end upstairs, near the elevator, which I think there might be two elevators lol! Second, the catfish. I called to order it for pick up Wed at 5pm, TG eve. Lady on phone was nice and quick, Vietnamese mostly. I ordered the $50 size. When I came to pick up, a lady only asked which size I ordered to pick up and I said the $50 size. Another lady came out to tell me she'll get it for me. She brought the fish out after a while, maybe 5 mins, and showed me the fish. It was pretty big, fed 4 of us and we still had leftovers. If you have never tried ca nuong before, please do yourself a favor and have this be your sign to go. Such a simple yet unique dish! Typically, you start off by ordering the size of your fish, which varies by pricing. I recommend the $45 fish; it can most-definitely feed around 4 people. It comes with lots of veggies to your heart's desires, rice paper with water to soften it, dipping sauces, and noodles to add into the rolls. The fish comes out as whole, and you will have to cut into it yourself. It is flakey, soft, and buttery! Something that I promise is a must-try once in your life. A perfect roll for me is the rice paper on the bottom, lettuce next, the fish with bits & pieces of the crunchy skin, cucumber - dipped in fish sauce. I am drooling with my tummy growling, just thinking about it at the moment. PSA: If you are allergic to nuts, this is a nut-filled dish! I recommend asking for no nuts or nuts on the side for the other people in your party! For the service, there are nice Vietnamese ladies that will accommodate to your needs and wants. They are pretty straight forward and will help you order exactly what you want. Ambiance of the place is pretty quiet; since it is more of a low-key spot, I wouldn't compare it to a normal restaurant. Definitely bring an older relative to navigate if you're not confident. We ate the catfish with vegetable springrolls so pretty healthy too. Food came out quickly and the staff was very nice. They had the usual Vietnamese drinks like pennywort, salted sour sugar plum, sugar cane and carrot orange juice.
