As many times I have been to Napa, I have always noticed this restaurant at the corner in Yountville several times. And now, I have had the experience. Parking can be a bit of a challenge and there is outdoor seating next to firepits and indoor dining on multi level sections. I had no idea it was a sushi bar as well. I passed. I went with water as we had plenty of wine already. I had the Newporter Salad with chicken ($25). It was warm and little mushy. We had the coconut shrimp roll ($21) and shared french fries. Both were good. We also had a duo dip with guacamole but later found a hair in it. We told our server and she took care of it immediately. The floor manager also came by and apologized. No big deal. I tried a bite of the wild mushroom meatloaf a friend said people raved about it. I'm not a fan of meatloaf but had to try it. Service was friendly. Review #30 of 100 in 2023. read more

We showed up without reservations on a Saturday afternoon. Reservations recommended, but we lucked out and got two seats at the bar, even though we'd already had more than enough wine. The Thai noodle salad was surprisingly good, and they gave us a pretty nice pile of it, too. The spicy tuna "Osaka Style" was also very tasty, though there were only four pieces. Pretty solid spot for lunch or dinner. Very popular though so a reservation is worth it. We didn't have one and waited 1.5 hours (they also don't take your number so you have to stay near the restaurant). I found it weird that they had sushi on the menu, usually sketches me out when the menu is too diverse. I didn't get the sushi but saw that a lot of people had. I got the Ahi Tuna Burger which was a 10/10. I was expecting slices of seared ahi tuna, but instead, they actually made a patty out of it. The only weird thing was that it was an open-faced burger? This is a fabulous place. They are dog friendly. The weather outside wasn't the greatest so we sat inside. And the ambiance was excellent. But I can tell that outside dining and/or glasses of wine would have been awesome. The food was fantastic. Interesting choice of American food with a Japanese style section serving some version of sushi and rolls. The food that we had was incredible. The salads were super fresh and the wait staff were extremely professional. I would recommend this place to anybody. My review is for customer service, R & D policies are nonsensical. It was a Friday evening and we wanted to have only dessert. The outside patio had 2 tables occupied. Since we were only having dessert we thought it would be polite not to take a table for dinner guest inside the restaurant.. The hostess informed us we could only have dessert at the outside bar. My husband thought maybe the patio tables were reserved for bottle service. , but I observed a guest eating food...hum. I inquired with the hostess about what was allowed at patio tables....and she stated starters, sandwiches, and sushi. By the way the small outside bar was crowded. And we had to asked the hostess to clean an area that was a mess with multiple dishes and napkins...very unbecoming. After reading other reviews R & D has some offensive policies the I've never encountered with other restaurants. The resturant is not a formal establishment. Unfortunately the management appears to have some issues and is demeaning to patrons per other up reviewers. Of course an established is entitled to set their own policies. I also appreciate requiring guest to dress appropriately for cause There are many other excellent restaurants that value the patrons and treat them with dignity and respect and offer flexibility. Management has some serious control issues with nonsensical policies. I recommend dining with restaurants that are pleased to accommodate guest Unfortunately R&D Is good, but the arrogant attitudes are not worth it. We thought we would go to a fancier place for our last dinner in Napa but got a reservation here and mentioned it to some of the staff at the wineries and they all said it was good. Came here for brunch before heading back home and the experience left us unsettled. It ruined our whole trip. First, hubby was asked to take off his hat inside the restaurant. We were not told about this dress code till later after we were seated by the same hostess who greeted us at the door. After food came general manager came and asked us to bring our baby outside as she was making some noise that might bother other people. The way he approached us was not welcoming at all. We decided to pack up everything and leave as it made us not welcomed to the restaurant however our waitress jaqueline was great just not the hostess at the door and general manager micah. The service was horrible! We were treated like children in a school cafeteria. They would not serve our food unless we were in our seats. Now we were there with a party of 10 (over 50 years old) adults and I understand that they could not seat us together but their patio seating only provided tables of 3. Couples had to be separated and if we stood up to mingle with each other they would not serve our food or drinks unless we were in our seats. Honestly thought the server was kidding when they said they only offered pizza to go. No dine in options. What?! Why? What is the reason I have to eat my pizza outside on a to-go order instead of here at the bar or at an inside table? Zero reasoning. I mean, I can SEE you make it in your kitchen. SOLID spot! Went here for a little lunch after our first wine tasting and was impressed. All the servers even wore chef's coats, nice touch. Went here on a very hot day and sat outside since we had our dog with us. They provided a water dish and were very welcoming. We ordered appetizers, dinner, and dessert. Want to love this place but it was a C this visit and I am having a tough time getting past that. In the past we've had super experiences, great food. Not sure if it was an off night or the place has slipped but can't get past some basic misses. Food felt a little more 'mass produced' than usual - fast-food than a restaurant experience. Husband's prime rib sandwich had no jus - unlike sister restaurants - this one is just bread, meat, and looked dry and uninviting. Not that unctuous first bite you anticipate where it all melts in your mouth. Meatloaf was good but uninspired - not like I remember - won't quibble but just came on a plate with polenta and served up. Girlfriend's filet came way way overcooked - burnt really. It looks her 45 minutes to get the replacement and by that time everyone else was finished. They were great about substituting greens (I love their emerald kale salad) only problem is this one had so little kale in it the salad greens were white. Seriously you kind of had to go on a search and destroy mission for anything green in that salad. Odd. I appreciate they allow the substitution though. As usual the drinks are great here. Love the touch with the glass replacement so you get a new chilled glass for whatever is left of your drink. Keeps you from having to drink too fast and always a nice touch to see an ice hold martini glass come to the table with the server pouring what's left of yours into it. Issue this time is we had to ask! Never at any of their other restaurants (or here) have we had to do this. We'll come back but I'd head to Rutherford Grill first next time. No fatal flaws but a bit too meh for the area and competition in/around town. Our experience wasn't quite as bad as Gary J but was borderline close for sure. read more
