    MIX PLATE with GRAVY
    Jessica G.

Really want to like it as it's our first stop for the trip, but the Mix Plate with Gravy we got just didn't suit my liking. It came with 2 scoops of rice, your choice of mac salad or coleslaw, BBQ beef, boneless chicken and fried mahi mahi. The decent one on the plate was prolly the beef but the chicken and fish were bit bland. The gravy sauce also seemed lumpy. The portion was filling but I might not be a fan of the taste. The outdoor dining space also had weird smell occasionally. Appreciate the servers though who were all attentive and moving super quickly.

Grub is delicious local food. Plates come with Mac salad and rice. I had the bbq beef plate. Beef was cooked to perfection. Pretty quick for as busy as they get. Cute little shop next door with merch. Have to fight off the local birds at your table but other than that, great place for great local food.

Brings back memories of the good ole days! Use to frequent alot while heading to the beach! Went with a long time friend to relive the good memories. Rainbows hasn't changed much, Plenty of parking , that fills up fast during meal times. Ordering was alittle slow, staff was nice@ in no rush. Ordered Hamburger Steak, Patty's 3 prepackaged thin & gravy tasteless, bad choice. Pork Cutlet, just ok, average plate lunch, Loco Moko, friend liked the over easy egg, Pattys not homemade! Eating on the clean bench tables were nice! Food not good, like years before. More of a tourist trap& locals , gone away & coming back, like me, coming back for the memories!

    BONELESS CHICKEN WITH GRAVY PLATE

We heard about the Rainbow Drive In from a tour guide and decided to stop in to give it a try. When we arrived there was a crowd but the lines truly did move very quickly and there is a great amount of seating. The amazing lady at the counter was kind and so remarkably quick with her duties. She rang up everything and delivered the food with lightning speed. We split a Boneless Chicken plate and it was plenty for two people. The chicken was tender and well seasoned and the Mac Salad and Rice complimented it well. We did get the gravy on the side. :) In reading the reviews I see a lot of differing opinions. Take this amazing spot for what it is. Good food at a good value in a good spot. Get in here and enjoy!

The service was the best part: the lady at the cashier was the sweetest and most patient person ever. The food felt like it was a quick fix-up from home (comforting, fulfilling, hearty, but just okay). The price is very good for the amount you get! Highly recommend checking out for the food and vibes; at least once though

I am highly disappointed with our experience, and we will not be returning. A restaurant's execution of a standard cheeseburger reflects the quality of the kitchen, and this missed the mark entirely. The patty was incredibly salty and appeared boiled rather than grilled. The value for the price is exceptionally poor. Charging an extra $0.95 for a deluxe option brought our total to $24.00 for two cheeseburgers, a shared fry, and a large drink. This is an outrageous price for sub-par quality. Save your money and avoid this tourist trap.

I've visited Honolulu twice and each time I've eaten at Rainbow Drive-in with zero regrets. It's iconic. It's tasty. And a good way to taste Hawaii. If you order one thing, order a mix plate ($16.25) ~ without gravy or with for an extra quarter ($16.50). The plate comes with bbq beef, boneless chicken (breaded), mahi mahi, a scoop of rice, and a scoop of mac salad. It's an excellent Hawaiian combo plate. You get a pretty solid version of every protein plus a taste of their delicious mac salad. I personally like the mix plate with the gravy because it gives everything a little extra oomph. I also like the chili here. I've had them on fries, but on my last visit, I ordered the chili plate ($12.75) - chili, rice, and a scoop of mac. The chili is a perfect ratio of beef, garlic, and kidney beans. Over rice, it gives comfort food though I would suggest a nap after eating this plate. Super sad I missed the gravy memo, but I'll make sure I'll do that next time. Rainbow Drive-In could be your welcome or farewell meal. Or make it both.

Shoyu chicken plate with double Mac salad which

Rainbow Drive-In is one of those classic Oahu spots you have to try at least once. It's very casual and all outdoors, with a few tables if you want to sit and eat there. They also have a cute little merch tent where you can buy t-shirts, hats, and other souvenirs, which adds to the fun local vibe. I ordered the shoyu chicken plate and the portions were HUGE, easily big enough to share. Everything on the plate was seriously delicious. The chicken was super flavorful, the rice was perfect, and the mac salad was so good. I was able to get double mac salad, which was definitely the move. Portion sizes here are massive, and the price feels very fair for how much food you get. It's a great value, especially for Hawaii. Parking can be a little tricky. They do have a lot, but it's pretty small and getting in and out can take some patience. Overall this is a great spot if you're looking for a classic Hawaiian plate lunch with big portions and really good flavors. I'd definitely come back.

We were recommended, highly recommended to go to the rainbow drive-in while we were in Honolulu. It was a quick 15 minute walk from our hotel. It was a fun journey as we saw a lot of native birds. My wife ordered the French toast and I ordered the spam and eggs. Wow, we shared both dishes and enjoyed every bite. We felt like we had a little sweet and savory with both plates. Great service and the prices were fair. We got there right when they opened so we beat the morning rush. It was our first Hawaiian meal and it did not disappoint. It was incredible and I wish I could go back. Be sure to check out my photos that include a rainbow that happened across from the restaurant the sunrise.

This place is so nostalgic and I just love the vibes!! I think it's a must stop if you're visiting the area. We stopped for breakfast and ordered the meat and eggs plate and the corned beef hash plate. Food was good, lots of bacon. Service was super quick and very friendly.

Glad I was also able to check out rainbow drive in while I was in Hawaii I ordered a loco moco and the family ordered other dishes like chicken katsu and the mixed plate and we also ordered orange passion fruit guava Service here took about 10-20 depends on what time you're going of the day

Garlic chicken plate was great but it did have fatty pieces to it. Mac salad was a little salty but definitely still delicious and white rice was great. Def a spot I have to come to when I am on the island!

Came here after the beach, line was not too bad. Food came pretty quick. Been coming here everytime we visit Hawaii. One of our cheaper meals in Islands. We enjoyed our meal on site. We ordered mix plate, chili and rice, loco moco and tater tots with chili (this was our favorite) its must for us! Everything else was ok,Loco moco patty was not my favorite.

Are there gluten free options here?

    Yes.

    Is there free parking here?

    Yes

What's in your special gravy? Any meat product? Thanks in advance

Definitely meat of some sort, if I had to guess it is beef gravy

    Are there Bathrooms?

    Yes they do.

Hi, do you guys take phone orders?

I've heard they do, but I have never been able to get through. You can also order online and still pick up through the "Phone Orders" line

Will the restaurant be open on New Year's Day?

    No, closed on January 1

Do you have seating area to enjoy the food?

    Yes they have outdoor tables

Do y'all accept EBT food stamps?

No. Just cash, debit or credit card.

Do they still sell their chili seasoning packets?

Yes, we do! Available at Rainbow Tiki in Kapahulu or online! https://www.rainbowtiki.com/

Do they have traditional Hawaiian dishes with vegetarian options?

More like local comfort food, nothing's vegetarian at Rainbow. Go to Highway Inn or Helana's they have traditional Hawaiian food.

Can you order plate lunches in the morning ? Or is only offered after a certain time?

I have come at different times and have ordered "breakfast" at lunch and sandwiches for breakfast so I think you can order anything on the menu regardless of time.

Can i order lunch at 800 am? like teriyaki steak or beef curry

Yes for the Teriyaki steak. The Curry might be a special of the day so it's if it's on the specials menu you can order it. Try the teriyaki pork. It's really good.

We do not accept EBT at this time.

Cash or credit card only from what I recall

Are they open on Christmas Eve? Regular hours?

    Yes but they close early

    Do they do half portions?

I am not aware of 1/2 portion or mini-plate. That being said, order a sandwich, loco moco, or chili bowl. The Mahi, BBQ Beef or BBQ Pork sandwiches are da bomb.

Do they serve all of the regular items during breakfast time as well?

    Yup!

What time do they stop serving their breakfast specials?

    10:30 am daily

Do u have a Monday special today?

No Monday specials on sundays. Lol.

If you're not a fan of seafood, don't let the squid deter you as it is a minimal part of the dish and added more of a crunchy textural component rather than actual flavor. This was my wife and my favorite dish. The luau pork was also very good though I liked the version we had at Toa Luau better. We also liked the haupia which was a very refreshing coconut pudding though for some reason our boys didn't like it. We also tried pipikaula which are thinly sliced dry-aged beef short ribs marinated in soy sauce and something else that made it sweet. If you know Korean barbeque, you'll instantly get the sensation that these are close cousins to galbi, though the pipikaula are much less sweet in comparison. The dry aging process also makes them a bit more dryer than galbi. On to more difficult stuff. I was enthusiastic about the fried butterfish collar but once I got a waft of the dish, I knew I was in trouble. I'm very sensitive when it comes to fish so the smell (more than the taste) was off putting. My wife was fine with it and enjoyed the dish, but if you aren't a fan of fishy fish, then I would skip it. The lomi salmon looked very much like pico de gallo with the addition of salt-cured salmon. My boys loved this dish because they love salmon but again I would steer clear if you are a seafood weakling like me. Alas, we come to poi. Had my hopes up since I love taro but the texture and a bit of sourness from fermentation deterred me from trying too much of it. I'm glad we tried it but not sure that we would get it again.

The staff was super nice about it and was able to accommodate us, with only a small request that we be out by 8pm since there was another big party with a reservation coming in. Absolutely reasonable. They sat us right away at three large tables, which gave us plenty of space for food and didn't force us to sit super close together. Menus, waters, plates, napkins, and forks were all brought out immediately, and our waiter was quick to take our order. We started with the prix fixe menu for 8-10 guests and were going to add other items à la carte, but a handful of our group accidentally went to the other Side Street location (make sure your group is all on the same page), so what we ordered ended up being more than enough. We left stuffed and with 5 boxes of food still. Edamame was nice and steamy, and large enough to easily pop the beans out with your mouth. Wish there was a bit more salt though. The farmer's salad had everything going on from citrusy to salty to crispy. Avocado had a little bit of oxidation but the capers, dressing and potato curls provided plenty of reasons to overlook it. The fried rice came in a hefty portion, with sizable pieces of bacon and sausage. The chicken I didn't realize was boneless based on the shape of the deep fry, but it was nice to freely bite into it without worrying about hitting anything with my teeth. Probably a bit too much on fried bits but still good. Pork chops had a better meat to crisp ratio in my opinion, as well as juiciness. They even came with ketchup on the side, which I love as a pairing but don't see much of at restaurants. My favorite meat item was definitely the sizzling boneless kalbi. The presentation on the sizzling plate with a side of kimchi was spectacular, and the meat was full of flavor. We also ordered yakisoba, which wasn't part of the prix fixe. Tasted good but nothing past standard expectations. We let the waiter know we had a 30th birthday at the table, and they brought a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream with a candle, and did a decent job getting the whole room to participate in the singing. It could also be the type of crowd this place attracts, since it seemed that everyone was so friendly and approachable. Thanks to the quick and consistent service, we were out in a little over an hour with no complaints.

Mixed bag at this restaurant. My real rating would be 3.5 stars if we could give half stars…read more I had tried calling before we came in to be sure they were open but no answer. Took a chance any way. Server greets everyone who comes in. Too much work for only one server, hard to get taken care of. More than half the tables were full even before 5pm on a Saturday, and there's a steady take out business, too. Looked at the online menu since the server didn't bring us a menu and we were waiting, but it doesn't list the squid luau combo so we had to wait for the server to take our order. She did take care of us before the walk ins that were ordering take out, and we appreciated that. However, turned out squid luau combo wasn't listed online because they were out. Boo. So hubby and I ordered the laulau combo consisting of a nice sized laulau that was tasty, with a nice ratio of pork to leaves, very large scoop of rice, some lomi salmon that was mostly onions that were quite strong and bitter and almost no salmon, pulehu chicken, which was tasty and had a nice char, and haupia, which was good. So food was fifty/fifty. Hubby ordered a coke, which was bottled Mexican (means real cane sugar) which was yummy. They serve Mexican food so I guess they have other Mexican sodas, but I didn't bother to check the menu. We had to ask for water three times because the server was so busy. We had a lot left over since the portions are big. Not sure if we will be back, though. While the server was nice and trying hard to take care of everyone, having to wait to order (another family even came up to ask is they could order after waiting for awhile) and then having to ask for water three times is a turn off for us. Also - no squid luau where's Hawaiian food is served was a major let down for me.

It was love at first bite for me with musubi and onigiri, so when I saw a spot dedicated to this deliciousness you better believe I made a point to go there! I ran even faster when StaciLei, Yelp Hawaii's amazing Community Manager, told me it's a must and gave me her list of greatest hits and must not miss items as a guide! Now I've had a lot of these in my life, and I must say, Iyasume are easily the best. See musubi and onigiri have humble origins as a quickly made homespun snack or on the go lunch, and when you spot them in the convenience environment they're often a giant ball of rice with a tinge of protein or seasoning for flavor. At Iyasume, these are culinary adventures, stacked with ingredients, all in handheld form, and the variety they offer is IMPRESSIVE! Of course musubi starts with the classic, SPAM. I had to order the kimchi + spam, shiso + spam, and unagi + tamago + spam, all of which were awesome (even the next day!). Onigiri here are actually layered with ingredients, so you get them in every bite, unlike the convenience store versions! They have a HUGE menu, and I went with spicy mentaiko and salmon, spicy mentaiko and ikura, ikura and salmon, and tuna mayo curry, all of which were great. I LOVE that they make these to order. You can see the line in the back hard at work, and they're very fast. You're sure to encounter a line when you arrive, but don't be scared, it moves quickly. I only had to wait about 5 minutes for mine to come up! Well worth it. Reasonably priced. Very filling. A taste of Hawaii and Japan in one place that'll have everyone smiling!

I bought kimchi spam, eel spam, inari spam, and a furikake rice ball. Didn't really interact with staff as they didn't offer to help while I viewed the items and I selected my items fairly quickly. I found purchasing four musubis very affortable. Finding parking was tough and expensive in the area. Not the restaurant's fault and probably drivers are not the bulk of their business.

The guava bar was delicious and flavorful and just crumbles in your mouth! Definitely one of the better guava bars I've tried. Love how crumbly it is. The salmon belly was delicious OMFG. It looks so simple and straightforward but that sht is so flavorful. It is crispy and yet soft on the inside. The salmon belly is cut into bite-sized pieces so I didn't have to worry about using a knife to cut it. I usually try salmon belly where it is usually seasoned lightly to bring out the natural flavor of the salmon, but Guava Smoked's salmon belly is just grilled in a way that makes the salmon sweet/crispy and still get traces of the salmon taste as well. It's definitely not your traditional Japanese-style way of cooking salmon belly but really just their own. I'd go back and get this again. Another thing too. I'd get this with beer. This would hit very hard with alcohol but because I don't drink I need a kombucha. The grilled salmon belly would go perfect with it. Cheers! Uncle was very helpful and kind when serving and if you dine-in he brings it to your table.

The guy at the counter wasn't the most people person ever, but he also got the job done. Didn't get a photo of the guava cake brownie thing they have, but it was really yummy.

The owner was very friendly and took the time to recommend dishes for us, including the laulau and lechon kawali. We also ordered the BBQ short ribs. Overall, it was a good experience trying Hawaiian food, but it's just not really our type of cuisine. The laulau was quite dry, and the preparation felt more like meat that had been boiled or cooked in liquid, which isn't something I usually enjoy. The lechon kawali had a crispy pork belly texture, topped with something similar to a salsa, but it didn't suit our taste either. Unfortunately, the cabbage served with it also had some black spots, which was off-putting. The BBQ short ribs were the highlight of the meal and the dish we enjoyed the most. We appreciate the experience and the hospitality, but the flavors just didn't quite match our personal preferences.

Then someone wanted to change from rice to poi. I tried many times and no one answered. Their voice mailbox was full. We e ended going there to make the change. He gentleman looked like he was working be himself. We bads to wait almost a half hour for him to finish the order. 2. Price - the prices were higher than expected. All the plates were $26.00 and up. 3. Food - The poi was very tasty and fresh, although a bit watery. The lau lau had a lot of lean pork filling, not a lot of leaves. The long rice didn't have much chicken and was a bit watery too. We enjoyed the sweet potato. There was also lomi salmon, haupia onion and chili pepper water. 4. As mentioned before there isn't much parking. The restaurant wasn't busy when we got there. Overall the food and service was OK. The price was a bit high.

During a visit here with my friends who was visiting from out of town, they both enjoyed their entree with a beer, love the atmosphere- we got to chat and ended up staying until restaurant's closing time. The waitress that day was super friendly, full of Aloha! I love the local foods, everything I tried was very tasty, When dining in I usually go with the 2 item plates, picking all different items ( Lau, Kalua Pork, pork belly, chicekn long rice and sharing family style with extra rice. The food was broke da mouth! During one of my dining visits, I was on my no carb lifesytle and got the Island cobb salad with Kalua Pork ( available in 2 sizes $9./$17.) Lettuce, cucumber, corn, tomato, avocado with Kalua Pig, and sweet onion dressing. Wow, I am glad they have this option for salads. I hope they don't discontinue the Cobb salad as it was so good! During this recent stop I picked up the Pork Belly and Pipikaula plate in short ribs style. This was such a great choice as my family enoyed it . Beer and Pork Belly for pupus and pipikaua ribs for dinner. They have daily specials (beef stew, beef tomato, chicken hekka, sweet sour spare ribs, beef stew, grilled fish, shoyu chicken, garlic shrimp) which sounds good too. You can pick plates in mini or regular, two or three item combo, but few dollars more for crispy pork, smoked meat Pipikaula. Please check out Oahu Grill in the Kaimuki area, opens daily from 11-9 pm.
