I'm guessing the lines at the store aren't going out the door anymore now that summer is over, but I don't know that for sure. Service was great and both people behind the counter were sweet and helpful when we came around 2pm on a Thursday. It was empty inside but they still had good stock of donuts. Hate when donut places have nothing left. Some flavors were gone but they still had a good variety left midday. The two that stood out were the chocolate crondy (croissant doughnut baby). So buttery and good. That donut was gone first. They do their glazed raised donut really well. I would've gotten another one of those instead of the other three we got. Least favorite was the lemon old fashioned. Too lemony but like an artificial lemon taste. Maple Bacon was ok, nothing special. Blueberry glazed cake was also nothing special. The iconic Randy's donut in LA is now in San Diego. It was such a big deal for my friend and I when we visited in 2011 in LA and now 12 years later, it's literally in my backyard. I came in the evening so most of the popular flavors were gone. I stuck to my go-to flavors of glazed and sugar. I was disappointed. I found the dough to be dry. It wasn't soft or fluffy. Could be because it's an old batch from the morning. They have breakfast sandwiches and coffee. I think it's a great location next to McD for early birds who want donuts and breakfast. read more

There was nobody in the shop when I arrived around 12pm. Little did I know that they sell out of their popular donuts really fast! Once they sell out of that flavor, they claim to not make more for that day. Overall I would like to come back to try their other flavors! And prob get the crumble one again! I was looking forward to try their regular donuts wasn't actually interested in the fancy ones. But they were out of the basic chocolate glazed and original glazed! Poor common sense made me go the day after the grand opening. I had heard that people were waiting in line at 1 AM on the day of the grand opening in order to get their freebies. However, I thought the excitement would've simmered down by day 2. I was wrong. The line was out the door (maybe about 15 people outside of the store) and there was a substantial line inside as well. My aunt's too late tip is that the crowd usually gets better 1-2 months after opening. I found the sugar donut to be too sweet but it had good texture yet an odd mouth feel. The lines are still super long because of the grand opening, but the staff comes out to greet you with a smile and to take donut orders of people in line instead of waiting to go all the way to the counter. I went around 3pm so there weren't a ton of donuts left, but the ones I loved were still available. The staff was super gracious the entire time. The place is clean, well lit, easy to find, and with decent parking. I am a huge fan of people who work hard to do a good job, so shout out to the guy who threw in an extra donut for us. There's also a sweet spot to take photos with the the iconic donut. The food? No. I got a vanilla glazed cruller, and midway through I realized how stale the donut was. My wife's donut (chocolate cake with chocolate frosting) tasted horribly. I love donuts, but I couldn't bear the taste. I don't know if it was a bad batch or a bad day, but it was just gross. The only way I could describe it was that it tasted a bit like they overused baking soda or has WAY too much salt. It was also stale. The clerk said the bakers were among tomorrow's donuts today. This means that the donuts you get are usually at least 18 hours old. If you come in the PM, probably longer. The donuts are mad stale. It was $28 and they asked for a tip (I gave one). My local spot, Sesame Donuts, serves similar donuts for about $9 cheaper. I just can't see a return to Randy's. Go for the ambience, but go to Vons to get a donut. I really do try to stay away from the hype but Randy's Donuts was requested by the coworkers today. I got here at 8 am on a Tuesday and it was not busy. The was restaurant was clean and the staff was friendly and gave fast service. The donuts themselves are your standard fare. A few classics mixed in with some razzle dazzle toppings. The dough itself was light and fluffy and surprisingly lasted a long time. I munched in some around 8 pm and the quality was still decent. Went here the second week it opened and again this past June 3rd. Knowing a good donut such as Nomad (North Park), Sidecar (Del Mar), VG (Cardiff) and Mary's (Santee) - Randy's was good in that it was above the Rose donuts and Yum Yum's but still lacked the unique OMG taste of the others. A big disappointment was any of the Matcha Tea, Cinnamon Toast, and Oreo raised donuts did not stick to the donuts. Pretty much fell off as soon as you take a bite. Might as well just have a plain donut and add the garnish (Oreo, etc) at home. Service both times was good and noted that each time I went (around 9-10 am) the kitchen was empty of bakers. Only racks and racks of donuts most likely baked early early in the morning. I've been dying to try Randy's donuts since they opened. Finally got to do so. Overall, it's ok. When it comes to donuts, I'm comparing this to my old school donut shops like Rose or Christy's. There was so much hype with the opening of this place. I decided to wait awhile until the buzz died down so i wouldnt have to worry about lines. I came on a Wednesday afternoon (4pmish) and there was still a good amount of people waiting to order. It went fast though, as my whole transaction was about 10 min from start to getting in the car. Located in a strip type mall near Walmart. Plenty of parking. There were some donuts that were already sold out. Finally go to try Randy's Donuts here in San Diego. I've been here several times since they have opened and each time I was greeted with the sign on the door that said "Sorry Sold Out". I visited on "National Donut" day, when they were giving a free "Classic" donut to every customer. There were about 20 people in line before me, but the place was well staffed and the line was moving pretty fast. We waited about 20 minutes. Randy's has several varieties of donuts...Classic, Deluxe, Fancy and Premium. Classics are your basic more traditional donut all the way up to the premium donuts that were donuts topped with all kinds of toppings. All in all they had a wide selection of flavors. We did a mixed box with Fancy and Premium donuts. And we also got our free classic donut for "National Donut" day. How did they taste??? These are very good quality donuts. They are not dried out like so other donut places. I had a classic glazed donut and the donut had some weight to it. It was soft, delicious and very moist. I also had a premium Oreo Raised which was amazing! Cost...your classic donut is going to start at $2.10 each going up to the Premiums that were $3.95 each. In my opinion this is an average cost for a quality donut. Of course buying by the dozen saves you a little...and who goes for just one donut anyways??? The staff was very friendly and helpful. They also have cool hip-hop and R&B music playing in the lobby. I total digged the vibe. If you can get there early, that's the best time for best selection. The hubby and I were one of the crazies who decided to check out Randy's the first week they opened. There was so much buzz and activity about what everyone around us was going to order that we changed our minds at least a dozen times while we waited. We ended up getting 5 donuts which were all pillowy and delicious. The butter crumb could quite possibly be in the top 10 of best donuts out there. It is dense yet somehow airy, rich and buttery with these delicious pockets of crumbs that stick the the glaze. It's a donut you want to eat fresh. Just don't wear a black shirt while doing so. I took a bite of everything else which was good. The twist was huge, not overly sweet. The maple bar even bigger and while the hubby wanted the maple cream filled version (they were out), the regular bar was just as good. Their maple is quite good and not over the top. The donuts everyone seemed to order which we did not were the churro topped one, matcha donut, cherry glazed cake, and the Nutella. I thought the coffee glazed one looked good so maybe next time. They have 4 tiers of donuts (classic, deluxe, fancy, premium) ranging from $2-$4 per donut. You can mix and match a dozen since you're essentially paying per donut, per tier. The guy in front of us spent $72 on 2-dozen. I would've only given them a 3-star review but they butter crumb put it over the top. read more

I wasn't too sure what to expect. I'd never been to a Randy's Donuts before so a noob here as well. The variety was great to see! Cerise topped to oversized! The donuts themselves were delicious! The big boys " Texans" were canoe in texture and definitely tantalizing! Just moist and canoe enough to eat and feel all the joy a donut is supposed to share. I did not try but my family and friends stated the cereal topped ones (fruity pebbles & fruit loops) were not so crispy as one would hope. The thought is they had been sitting. We have been here 3 times. I have to say great donuts each time. We like non-cake donuts so I can't say I have tried theirs yet. My favorite is the raised coffee donut and my husband's is the butter crumb (despite being a chocolate glazed go-to guy he will order this over chocolate ) and amazing customer service 3/3 times. Place is clean, and we have experienced waves of crowds. So if you get lucky there isn't a line and you can ogle at the fancy donuts for a bit. Today there were 3 people ahead of me who were pretty quickly helped, one server took time to assist a younger customer with deciding on what ice cream flavor he wanted in his donut ice cream sandwich (note to self: must try next time) the line behind me grew so another person from the back came out to help the 2 women in the front. This was my first time ordering coffee here but decided, why not since they were extra friendly, personable and helpful today for the 2/2 employees who spoke with me. Note to those getting iced coffee, and reason I felt compelled to post today (no pics of iced coffee on yelp to review here)... I have to say this "large iced coffee" is the smallest, large iced coffee I've ever ordered (except in Japan). I checked the website but it doesn't show how big a cup should be. While the person I ordered with didn't make it himself, he did walk it out to me, so I'm pretty sure it's their large iced cup size, but gosh it's so tiny! lol I'm a Starbucks drinker when I splurge or really need caffeine, so this is a pic of my venti Starbucks cup next to their "large iced coffee." My family and I were celebrating my wifey's birthday by eating one of her fave cuisine sushi at Sushi Diner 2 in Mission Valley. After eating a delectable lunch, we had to kill some time before my doctor's appointment. On our way to our lunch spot, the birthday girl mentioned that she wanted something sweet after lunch. I mentioned to my fam that I discovered where the iconic Randy's Donuts opened their first San Diego location. As part of my girlfriend for life's bday celebration, we decided to confirm whether the hype about Randy's Donuts was real. In my foodie opinion after eating here for the first time, the hype was too legit to quit meaning that I thought the donuts were yummy. Randy's Donuts has been World Famous since 1952. The gigantic donut advertising a Randy's Donuts location has been featured on television shows and movies. The famous big brown donut has been depicted in tv shows like The Simpsons, Arrested Development, and Entourage. It has been prominently displayed in movies like Get Shorty, 2012, and Iron Man 2. For it's very first San Diego location, there is no humongous donut informing San Diegans where Randy's Donut is located. You can find the donut shop off of the 15 freeway heading west. It is found within the Stonecrest Plaza shopping center where you can find McDonald's, Rubio's, Papa Johns, and Pick Up Stix. It is across from Taco Bell and Chevron. As you enter Randy's, you are greeted by a miniaturized version of the humongous donut and a pic collage of where Randy's Donuts has been spotlighted. There are a few tables and chairs set up to chow down on their tasty donuts. The young lady with the face piercings behind the counter provided us with outstanding customer service. Allow me to say that buying donuts at Randy's Donuts is not a cheap proposition. If you think you're going to get the same type of pricing as Mom and Pop donut shops, you'll be disappointed. What you will get from Randy's Donuts are quality, fresh, eye-opening, and delish donuts. They've got enormous, culinary art worthy, savory, classic, fancy, deluxe, and premium donuts. I was actually taken aback when I saw the different price points and was initially skeptical about whether the donuts here were worth what they cost. In my humble opinion, you truly get what you pay for. We ordered 6 donuts that cost a little less than $22, but I honestly thought they were worth every penny. We ordered the following donuts: Bacon Maple Long John, Nutella Raised, Matcha Tea Raised, S'mores Raised, Cinnamon Toast Crunch Raised, and Glazed Raised. I specifically ordered the bacon maple because I'm a fan of savory and sweet. That donut comes with a heaping amount of bacon that provided tasty texture, it was substantial, and I really don't know what they do with their dough, but it was fresh when I ate it at home and it was fresh for the next few days. I thoroughly enjoyed all of the donuts we selected and what stood out for me were the quality ingredients and the fresh dough. I've heard about Randy's Donuts and it being promoted via blockbuster movies and popular television shows, but I never experienced this Los Angeles institution until it opened its first shop in San Diego. We arrived at about 10:45 on a Saturday. The store was not busy and there was ample parking. The glass display case was well stocked with a good variety of donuts. They have all the basic donuts, and a good selection of specialty donuts. They have three tables inside if you want to eat there. We tried four donuts: Chocolate cake - the donut was dry and the frosting flaked off. Buttermilk old fashion - ok. Heavy but not bad. Glazed- the donut was tough and chewy. Bear claw - looked good. The dough again was tough. The filling had too much cinnamon. You could feel the ground cinnamon and your tongue. I see no reason to return to Randy's Donuts. It's no better than your neighborhood donut shop. read more
