The menu was easy to read (shocker right) the girl in the front was really nice, she suggested a coffee syrup for my latte and with no hesitation I trusted her and boy am I glad I did! And no a latte is not just a latte and yes you can mess it up! lol The breakfast sándwich was pretty good and my friend ordered the French toast with Nutella and strawberries it was so good (yes I took a bite) Super cute coffee shop and they Design leaves on your coffee! Say what?! Super cool I went in a 2nd time to finish some work since I couldn't focus at my home office and it was pretty loud, they had super loud music (borderline annoying) and everyone was super loud that day, they even have a huge speaker to really crank it up! Not a good place to study or work (unless you can zone out with some earbuds) I didn't leave since parking had already been paid for but next time I'll definitely hit another shop with a quitter ambiance. read more

Ok, so I'm not a big coffee guy. The wife works for Starbucks. So we try to go anywhere but, when we travel. So when I go for coffee, I expect it to be good, with friendly service and maybe a nosh or two. So traveling through Long Beach we needed some caffeine and decided to stop here. Gotta' say the service was excellent, the people were very friendly and offering to answer questions and make suggestions. Appreciate that so much. The pour over was good and strong and the latte was not only beautiful but tasty as well. Loved the doughnuts too. I would recommend this little coffee house to anyone in the area. read more

I've been here many times before but felt like I needed to leave an updated review because it's been a few years since they openedI'm not sure what the most recent reviewer from today was talking about. He must have been at a different shop, or universe because the three girls (blue hair, short hair, brown hair) working the bar were very attentive and even recommended a new roast to me which I loved! I got a "slow coffee" pour over, which did take a while (takes about 5 minutes) but is well worth the wait. It seems to be a very popular neighborhood spot so the baristas seemed swamped, but where more than obliging to give me a water while I waited for the rush of orders before me. They have a selection of food including sandwiches, toast, and pastries including several vegan or veganizable options. Warning though-- the parking lot in the building right next door does not belong to that building so they can't validate. Meter parking or the city lot on 3rd is your best bet. read more

When Wide Eyes Open was closed today someone referred me to Recreational Coffee. Parking was horrific and they have a limited selection of coffee and breakfast items... BuT, that was not the reason for 1 Star. I ordered an Almond Chai Latte. They placed my latte on the counter and called for me to get it... no problem there, I thought that was their policy. I was the only customer at the time in the shop. As more people came in and ordered various drinks, pastries, and other breakfast items... I noticed that they brought their orders to the table. I asked why did I have to come up to get my order ( mind you, I am the only person of color in the shop). The young lady made excuses saying, " oh, he was probably busy.... ".... not even an apology! I had a pulped Papua New Guinea pour-over ($4) which was really good---smooth and rich flavor. Be warned that it takes a while for each cup of coffee to be made. If you're in a rush, go elsewhere. I treat myself to a honey oat milk latte frequently. They are clean and quick. The vibe onside is inviting. When we aren't making accommodations for CoViD, this place has ample people working and socializing. Currently, there are a couple of chairs for outside seating. Got the iced matcha latte and a lemon donut. Ice!!! The drink was half ice. Taken some out in the photo to stop the drink ending up too diluted. Matcha latte does actually taste of matcha which is a big bonus. Also taste a lot of the milk. Not sweetened as far as I can tell. That's nice as it allows you to add your own. The donut was a bit pricey. For a vegan donut it's not bad. It isn't dry just a bit crumbly. It doesn't really have the texture of a donut. More like a cake. It is exceptionally sweet. Other than that it has a strong lemon flavour. It isn't very pleasant in taste. Really disappointed by the drink. The mostly ice drinks are super annoying when they were already overpriced. read more

Finally a great coffee place in downtown LBC. It is located a block from the Promenade and if you are looking for some hipster coffee make sure you stop by! I visited for the first time this week and I will definitely be back. I ordered a Mocha with almond milk and it was delicious. What I liked about it was that the coffee was not bitter - it was very smooth and this Mocha was not too sweet. I am one of those who likes coffee with their creamer and I am now thinking that I use so much creamer/sweetener to cover up the bitterness of "bad" coffee. Oh man, I'm so upset! Every time a new and awesome spot opens up in Long Beach, I can't help but wish I was still attending college. This newly opened coffee shop on Long Beach Blvd is a gem. I used to live less than a minute away from where this place is located. The bus stop from which I used to take the bus to CSULB everyday is literally across the street! Why couldn't Recreational Coffee have existed before? Boo. Ah well! I'm thrilled for them and for the Long Beach community because this place offers exquisite coffee. They get their coffee beans from Portola Coffee Roasters (Orange County, CA) and Case Coffee Roasters (Ashland, OR). They also make a lot of the things on their menu from scratch, such as their gingerbread latte. I was impressed when they mentioned their gingerbread is proudly made in house. That definitely sealed the deal for my friend Annie A. and she ended up ordering that beautiful concoction! As for me, I don't know why but I wasn't feeling the holiday spirit much that morning and so I opted for the cappuccino. I definitely made a mental note to try their peppermint mocha on my next visit though so there's that. To accompany our hot beverages, we got two vegan donuts from Long Beach's own Caffeinated Kitchen. We had the Chocolate Sea Salt and the Chocolate Peppermint. Both were delicious and we couldn't believe they were vegan! These were definitely a better batch of those Caffeinated Kitchen donuts because the last time I've had them over at Rose Park Coffee, they were too dry and blergh. Overall great cafe!
