I've only visited Red Sun twice, but both times have met or exceeded expectations. First- the cost. It's hard to beat rolls for $4! (Fancier rolls are expensive, but your basic California and Tuna are way cheap). Second- the quality, each roll is made to order. So far my favorite is the Crispy Crab (but who doesn't like fried crab with cream cheese in roll form?). The restaurant itself if family-owned and operated and was clean. Decor is dated, it's positioned in a strip other buildings built in the early 90s. Some customers were eating sushi, but it seemed many were ordering the Hibachi. Great place to eat. My love for sushi is limited to only a few things, mostly tempura, so my wife and I split the crispy crab and cream cheese roll which was very good. I had never heard of Red Sun until recently; when a friend of mine went there and reported back that she thought they were pretty good. I read most of the reviews on Yelp about it before going, and decided to go ahead and check it out myself. Since it had 4 1/2 stars with a fair amount of reviews in pocket, that seemed positive and impressive enough to me. When I looked up their location, I did notice they were in a strip mall. I also noted on the Yelp profile that the tables were waited on by servers. I went into the place thinking that's the way it was operated. Then I quickly realized after we sat down that you're pretty much on your own. You basically take a paper menu from the counter and figure out what you want to eat, order it and then pay for it beforehand. The decor and atmosphere is an unembellished and no frills situation. Take out could definitely a consideration here, especially if you don't like a less than inviting and cold ambiance in a restaurant setting - and of course, if you prefer to be waited on as well. I suppose the bottom line is if the food is decent, then it's all good for the most part. ;o) Considering the food: I can firmly give it all a comprehensive four star rating. We had the general tsos chicken, deep fried breaded shrimp appetizer, vegetable sushi, and a large chicken bento bowl. The bento box was put together nicely. My only negative comment and observation on it was the fact the dressing on the salad could be a little more flavorful as well a little thicker - it was very watery and almost non existent. The salad consisted of just flavorless and pasty looking iceberg lettuce with nothing else along with it. It was unimpressive in that respect, and greatly lacked overall flavor. If it wasn't for the smattering of dressing on it, it was only rabbit food. The chicken in the bento box was highly seasoned; tasting much like teriyaki. The veggie sushi was spot on. It was served with a very small pat of wasabi and one tiny sliver of ginger. I always could use more of that indeed. I suppose some people don't care for or eat those two condiments or sides, but I certainly do. The deep fried breaded shrimp appetizer was great, and the sauce they served with it was very well prepared. The General tsos chicken was lacking and fell a bit short. It just wasn't spicy enough. It was more on the very sweet/sticky and syrupy side than anything. It was almost leaning towards a sweet and sour sauce than what I am familiar with as a hot and spicy general tsos sauce. We did have to pay extra for 'fried rice' with the general tsos chicken. I was surprised about that. When it was served, was no more than white rice tossed mixed with soy sauce and nothing more - like added veggies. That was disappointing and somewhat of a rip off. If you want noodles instead of rice, be prepared to pay extra (approx - 3.00) too. The nickel and dime approach towards patrons is not always a good plan. ***** Additional note: I can honestly say the general tsos chicken at China Bistro has Red Sun's version beat by a long mile. Next time we might try the hibachi grill dinners. They look like they could possibly be the ticket. The pricing and amount of food received could be a just a little better. For both of us, (considering what we ordered), it came to well over $30.00 - with drinks. But I will note that we can go to our favorite sit down Chinese restaurant and pay that easily, with also getting more for the money - with full service & a really great over the top atmosphere too. I would consider going again, especially because I thought the veggie sushi was probably one of the best values on the menu. Considering it all, I can recommend Red Sun to anyone else who wants fast and decent tasting Chinese/oriental food. **Update : I took a friend to Red Sun recently for lunch. This time I tried the hibachi chicken with vegetables. I actually liked the taste of the hibachi chicken better than I did the bento box chicken & broccoli. The sauce had a better flavor. The only fault I found with the hibachi chicken is that it only had a smattering of zucchini & few mushrooms & onions. I was hoping that it would have a larger variety of vegetables. It also would've been nice for them to ask if you wanted egg in it too. I'm just going by any fresh cook to order hibachi situation. In those particular situations they always have a variety of things you can choose from when they create your meal. I was going to order the chicken Bento box, but when I tried to substitute the Cali Roll sushi for the veggie sushi they wanted to charge me 2 extra dollars! I thought that was petty & ridiculous because the substitution seemed to be even as far as I'm concerned; as I was also ordering a full order of veggie sushi as well. The food was great, the service was great, and the prices were great! I got the hibachi chicken and it was delicious. If you like house of Tokyo or kabuto, then you'll love this place. It's like a fast food version of those, except the food is just as good and it's the same quality. If you're worried about it being dirty or anything like that, don't. It was very clean and well kept. One thing to note, it's not a buffet or a cooked-in- front-of-you place, it's more like a Chinese carryout style restaurant but with nice clean dining area. read more

I am rating this solely on the sushi I ordered for lunch today and the fact that they list themselves as a sushi restaurant. I saw many tables enjoying the bento boxes and other meals and they looked they all looked happy. Now to the sushi. I ordered a tuna roll and a dynamite roll. The total with a drink and tip was $21. The tuna roll had a very small piece of tuna with a large piece of totally unripe avocado. The dynamite roll was fried quite crispy and once again, the fish was very small and it also had avocado that was almost inedible. It didn't taste bad, it just didn't taste at all. The Hibachi is excellent for the price. I got the shrimp Hibachi and I must say it was very good. The shrimp were not over cooked like most Hibachi cooks tend to do. The veggies were also very good, great seasoning and cooked perfectly. I just wished there was more of them. The rice was very average. It wasn't fried rice like I wanted. It was also very sticky. Officially my favorite restaurant in Greenwood. From taste to presentation to prices it's fabulous. I got the bento box which is 4 pieces of sushi (upgrade to a different for $2), salad with ginger dressing, and brown rice with your choice of chicken, beef, or shrimp. I got chicken and it was awesome. They also have a creamy mustard sauce (in a yellow mustard bottle) and it was really good too. Can't say a single bad thing about this place. I ordered Hibachi Chicken and a California roll and both were delicious. Mom ordered the hibachi beef and it was good as well. The staff was extremely friendly.
