This is vegetarian heaven (at least for brunchy foods). Almost everything on the menu is vegetarian/vegan friendly or can become so! I had the burrito with tofu and it was super yummy! The serving size was perfect -- I was not super hungry and I was able to eat the whole thing and feel comfortably full. Also the burrito didn't fall apart which is a plus! I will definitely be back to try some of the other options! They all look so good! Make sure to ask about the daily specials too! Only reason I can't give this place 5 stars is because of the hostess. I went on a Thursday at 11 (aka not a super busy time) and there were many open tables. The hostess asked me to wait until the rest of my party got there to get a table (understandable and totally okay).....but then she told me to go outside. She wanted me to wait outside of the restaurant for my friends.... I don't understand why since the restaurant was definitely not crowded. One of my favorite brunch places in Atlanta! THE FOOD IS AMAZING! After sitting in my bookmarks for YEARS, Ria's Bluebird finally gets a review. I really put off visiting this place, because the weekend crowds seem like they can get ridiculous. When I got a surprise day off from work, I decided to take my girlfriend to Ria's for a weekday lunch. Little to no wait at noon on a Friday. The server seated us within 5 minutes, and we ordered the Omelette of the Day and a small stack of Pancakes with Caramelized Bananas. The Omelette of the Day comes with 3 choice of sides: bacon, sausage or soysauge; skillet potatoes, grits, or sweet potato cake; muffin or biscuit. GET THE SAUSAGE! Best breakfast sausage I have ever had! The skillet potatoes are also great - perfectly crispy edges! Biscuit? Also bomb! Now... the omelette. The omelette of the day was a kale and swiss cheese omelette. Delicious! The omelette was fluffy and the cheese was melted perfectly. My girlfriend isn't usually a fan of swiss cheese or kale, but she enjoyed the omelette. Everything about the order was wonderful! Now, the oh so famous pancakes. I am so glad we ordered a stack, because they really are the best pancakes in the world! So fluffy and delicious! The caramelized bananas are so perfect with the pancakes. It's worth the extra few bucks to include it in your order. The pancakes can be pretty sweet, but pancakes are breakfast cakes afterall. Coffee helps. Just think of it as dessert. Service was pretty slow - taking our order took a while and getting our food did too. Their selection on their menu was more geared toward vegetarians, not really just plain-old breakfast fans. A lot of southwestern tempeh, tofu, etc. -- didn't expect that. Not a lot of basic breakfast items -- all were put as sides so if you want a "basic" breakfast: eggs, toast, etc. you basically have to make it yourself. "No substitutions!" is their motto on their menu, but honestly it shouldn't be that hard to accommodate customers in my opinion. Oatmeal wasn't very good - too sweet and too grainy, wasn't cooked long enough to me, almost felt like I ate oatmeal from the jar. Pancakes were okay but a bit too sweet and buttery for me. They have a sweet-potato soup on the menu that is so good, if you were to put a bowl of it on your head, your tongue would beat your brains out trying to get to it. Believe the hype about the food. Came here for brunch with my sister because she had been wanting to go for awhile and the wait had always been too long in the past. It might've been because it was a Friday but the wait was not long at all! We grabbed a coffee at Octane after putting our names down and were seated within 25 min. Everyone was super friendly and the wait staff was pretty knowledgable about the menu. We ordered the eggless frittata and the fried tempeh dishes. Both were awesome and very unique! It was hard to believe the frittata was eggless, had a ton of yummy veggies and was super soft. The cornmeal crust was nice and crunchy and the tomato sauce it was paired with was really flavorful and delicious! We were a little skeptical about the fried tempeh because it's usually hit or miss at most places but this was a fantastic choice! The tempeh was marinated in a soy sauce and crusted with cornmeal and deep fried. Plus it was on a bed of kale and grilled tomato and sitting on a soft biscuit topped with a creamy peppery gravy. Really different and worth trying! Note: both dishes were a little heavy on the pepper. The ambiance is a little quirky but fun. Just showed up at 7:52am, after landing on a red-eye flight, because it's just that good. Not only the food, but the "I could care less about you" attitude that the servers always wear on their sleeves and the carefully assembled decor. Well, the servers only seem cold until you start a conversation or ask them how their morning is going--super cool staff once you get to know them. The seating is composed of padded wooden benches and chairs that are comfortable enough to sit through for a meal, but not much for longer. There's an enclosed outdoor area too, which has its own charm to it with a nature themed design, but I prefer to sit inside and stare at the bluejay artworks and the beautiful mosaic. There's a cool rustic modern vibe about the whole interior, and there's always great music jazzing the place up. Sadly, they open at 8. But I can brave the 8 minutes (only 4 left to go) for a side of their gravy with biscuits, or for their skillet of potatoes and peppers, or for any of the other vegetarian options they carry on their menu. And there are a few. Parking is slim here, but you'll manage. Come hungry as the portions here are proper! And finally, this is the ideal spot to go after a heavy night out. This place is over hyped. We waited 15 minutes to get a table. Then another 10 minutes for the server to come back to take our order. She was slow paced and didn't give us a friendly welcome. Then it just become one disappointment after another. I asked if she had fresh squeezed orange juice and she said yes. Ordered a large and it came out not fresh but freaking Tropicana orange juice I could get at any grocery stores. Then ordered the brisket breakfast and the meat was over cooked and chewy. The wife had the early bird breakfast which was ok. We also had the popular short stacked banana pancake which was not bad. Great food but the wait kills it for me. We went on Father's Day and I was prepared to wait 45 mins but we waited over and hour. The place is small and there are only 5 parking spots in front. Parking is rough so be prepared to circle to find parking. Weekends automatically means long waits which we read in the other Yelp reviews. The food though was amazing!! I had the peach pancakes with caramel popcorn with a sausage and the breakfast burrito. It was all great! Their fresh squeezed OJ and grape fruit juice were excellent. What a delicious breakfast! My husband and I have been meaning to come here for ages but couldn't break our cycle of Home Grown, West Egg, Flying Biscuit, etc.. So glad that we finally did it! Full disclosure, we just finished our Whole30 last week so there was no way on earth I was ordering an egg breakfast. That said, I was still tempted by their Huevos and my husband did order their Benedict special. Wow they can cook a perfect egg: whites were solid with a beautiful runny yolk. I had their pancake special which had a blood orange sauce and it was unbelievably good, tangy, sweet, and super fluffy. We got there around 9:45 so the wait wasn't too terrible, about 30 minutes.The only, super random, complaint I have is we were seated in the patio area and the booth sides are cushioned on a concrete bench that feels about 6" too high. When ordering the pancakes I asked for strawberries on top and they told me they had none but my friend ordered the parfait and it came with strawberries and blueberries so that was odd, they could've at least said no substitutions instead of lying. The pancakes also come DRENCHED in syrup. It was an inedible level of sweet. Wish they'd give you the option to have the syrup on the side or at least told us they came floating in a soup of syrup. First time trying this place out. It's pretty good. I ordered the bluebird burrito it has scrambled eggs potatoes cheese sour cream green salsa and you can choose pinto beans or black beans. You get a side which I choose avocado. So delicious. Also ordered a large orange juice. My only problem was that I found a hair.... Yes a hair in my food. That's the last things you want to find while eating your food. The waitress was kindly enough to get me another order which she didn't charge me for my food. Over all it wasn't a too bad experience. I dined here with an Atlanta-based friend and his wife last weekend. My understanding (per my friend) is that Ria was formerly his neighbor and was a Chopped contestant. I liked my food, but was somewhat off-put by the slowness of the place. I was with two people I hadn't seen in a long time and thoroughly enjoyed talking to so I didn't so much mind the wait, but I'd had a bit to drink the night before and was looking forward to getting something in my churning stomach for a really long time before our breakfasts arrived. I don't know much about Atlanta, so I am at a bit of a loss to explain exactly where this place is short of saying it is across the street from a cemetery interring some Atlanta luminaries, next to a fun looking bar, in a storefront that looks like an old diner, and I believe near the MLK Nat'l Landmark. The place isn't overly large, and is a shoebox shaped restaurant with a hodge-podge of furniture. We arrived at 10:30-ish on a Saturday and waited awhile outside before being seated. We ordered and eventually our food arrived. Food was quite good, but it took quite awhile (30-40 minutes) before arriving, which is a heck of a long time for breakfast. I had the huevos rancheros on blue tortillas and a side of home fries, which appeared to have a heaping dose of dill. Both were delicious. Pricing was more than you'd expect for breakfast (I happily footed the bill), but if this place is 20% more than your typical greasy breakfast spot, it is easily +50% better, so it is a pretty good trade-off. This girl is ALWAYS up for trying an new brunch spot. Let's be honest, I am up for trying ANYTHING that involves food! I had not seen a friend in a while. I sent her a text prior to church on Sunday saying- "let's do brunch". She was all in and suggested this restaurant. I was eager to try a new brunch venue, as I typically stick to the ones that I know I can count on. I don't do brunch often, and really hate when it's a miss! However, Ria's gave me everything I needed! This restaurant is located directly in front of Oakland Cemetery. I know it sounds kind of creepy- but if the weather would have permitted I would have loved to walk through after having brunch. Just a little suggestion: if you do decide to check out this restaurant, make it a full few hours by browsing through the cemetery. Back to the review- we arrived around 10:30 am on a Sunday. My though was- we are early- there is no way we will have to wait. Not the case! There were a great number of people already waiting., and this place is itty bitty! When we checked in the hostess told us to expect a 30 minute wait. The wait time was not bad, but the fact that I had to wait 30 minutes outside was dreadful. However, it could have been worse. I actually love the outdoors, just not the cold outdoors. I am almost certain that if it were unbearably cold, I would have passed on trying this place out. In an effort to not stand outside in the cold we attempted to stand in the corner by the bar- and were politely told that we had to stand outside! My suggestion-- outdoor heaters!! They actually emit a decent amount of heat. In regards to the service- I enjoyed our waitress. She had a great personality, and gave off the vibe that she was happy! She was not over bearing, but kept an eye on important things such as water levels. Now- the magic of this place is in the chow! My friend raved about the pancakes. Pecans. I also love a good bowl of thick grits so I had to give those a try! So let me tell you about the pancakes!!!!! The taste- flavorful, mouthwatering, and Scrumptious! The toasted pecans added a great flavor and texture. They were both cooked into the pancakes and placed on top. I asked for the banana on the side. My friend warned me that they were pretty sweet. Now don't think these were just some ordinary bananas. They were cooked and were in some type of sauce. Honestly, I was able to eat the pancakes without any syrup because of the sauce produced from the bananas. The pancakes indeed took the limelight! The grits were just ok- I have had better. After not eating at Ria's Bluebird for some 5 years (call it timing, new spots and long lines) I finally got to revisit this East Atlanta staple this past Sunday. I would have given it 5 stars were it not for the unusual and musty smell that clings to the quilted seating that lines the back wall. It also had a ton of hair and dust collecting and the ceiling leaked into one of the dishes I ordered. Luckily it didn't leak into my absolutely delicious country fried tempeh dish. This dish was recommended by Creative Loafing and with good reason. The light, crispy coating on the tempeh is perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of crunch. All of that is complemented by the grilled tomatoes and yummy "sausage" gravy sauce that smothered the dish. Ria's is a really good place to take your vegetarian and vegan friends. They're very conscious of special diets and offer lots of tasty and satisfying dishes. I just want them to do a deep clean. read more
