The Frozen Cactus has been very fair and welcoming to local musicians. I co-host an Open Mic here and am consistently surprised by the care and attention that the owner and staff put into to their clientele, events, and atmosphere. I have seen some negative reviews online, but have also seen the owner reach out time and time again to ask what they can do better, and that's something I personally really value in a business. What a joke. You can put up a new coat of paint but you can't fix this bars issues. The waitress took forever to come by and there were only a couple of tables in the place. Food was cold and had to be sent back. When the owner or manager (not sure which he didn't introduce himself) came by he was DRUNK and slurring his words. If I could give 0 stars, I would! From the moment we walked in until we left it was an awful experience! The servers were all standing around, blocking the walkway and just stared at my group, so we had to navigate our way through the tables to the bar. Once seated we weren't even offered menus, and they had no idea on their specials. Once we finally got our drinks, two of the four were incorrect, one of which came in a glass with a crack that ran all the way down the side. Beautiful place but service could be better. Don't play the jukebox if you sit close to the bar. We played music and the bartender had their music on so 2 different songs going at the same time. We asked the bartender to turn off the bar music(not a band) and she said she didn't know how. She never offered a refund nor called her boss to learn how to change the music. Walked in for some food and drinks- also curious to see the changes Taffer made. Number one the entrance to this place is a joke and not well marked. Secondly, we walked in and the place lacked a flow, felt in organized. Nothing looked renovated. Looked like any other hole in the wall bar in Tucson. Shame because you can have a nice bar without having to go crazy ... the locals I guess don't think so and think whatever he did was pretentious. When we walked in we just saw a dirty empty bar. My wife and I were visiting Tucson from Montana. Decided to check out the Frozen Cactus as it was a reasonable distance from where we were staying and we were thirsty from doing the touristy thing. Sat at the bar and noticed it was very busy. Sunday fun day, football games on every channel. 2 huge projector screens. TV's covering every game available scattered throughout. The wait staff was very friendly. We found a nice spot on the corner of the bar and were greeted almost immediately and had a drink shortly after that. We started up a conversation with a great guy at the bar and he pointed out the owner after we asked about them being on the show. Turns out they were great friends. They gave us suggestions of things to do in the area and couldn't have been more accommodating. We felt like we made 2 new friends. The staff was very happy and you could tell they treated each other like family. Turns out the bartender was the owner's wife, she did her job at a high level with a smile on her face and if you looked around the room, people were happy and enjoying themselves. I would highly recommend this place and will definitely visit again if and when we make it back to the Tucson area. It was our pleasure to meet these fine people!! read more

Frozen cactus seems to be just chaotic as RJs when it comes to service. Our waitress was very kind and knowledgeable but was not attentive to us. I asked for the larger draft beer and received a pint. I understand mistakes happen, this was not the issue though. After waiting and waiting for our checks our waitress informed us that two of their POS systems were down and everyone was having to use the ones behind the bar. When we finally received our checks they were all kinds of messed up. We had separate checks and some of our items were all mixed up. Also, please update the woman's restroom! The place was interesting. It was clean and the food for bar food was pretty good. I had to wait for a server to come and help me. Once my server came I gave my drink order. It was a hibiscus margarita. I would not call that a margarita at all. It was basically a shot of tequila with a little flavoring from the hibiscus ice cube and little lime juice. It tasted okay. A little strong and small being that it was mostly a shot of tequila. I waited for at least 15 minutes maybe a little more until my server came back to ask if I wanted anything else. I wanted to order food. Like I said the food was not too bad. I had a burger and it was cooked to my order. Everything was all pretty good with exception of the service. That was very slow. I was never asked if I wanted another drink or if I needed anything else. I waited until 8:00 (an hour and 1/2 after I got my food) for my bill. My server seemed more interested in the gentleman she was talking with at the bar. The other server in the room who was working a big table and a few other parties did more work then my server. I got up to leave and still my server did not come with a bill. I left money for my bill and tip which I know was enough I just hope that my server got there before someone took it off the table. People were friendly and food was very good, much better than most bars that serve food. Bartender was nice and gave good service even though she was busy. When I sat at a table I waited a couple of minutes to be acknowledged by the waitress, but again she was nice and checked on our drinks often enough that we never wanted for food or beverages. Over all the first two visits were very positive. Only negatives for us were the parking lot and the outdated restrooms. With a repaving of the lot and a refresh of the restrooms I would have given 5 stars. read more

Took nearly ten minutes for anyone to come by for a drink order, had to move to a table closer to the bar to actually be noticed. After the waitress took our drink order we sat for about 20 minutes with no drinks and no word from the waitress. It seemed that she was avoiding us because the bartender was backed up. That honestly didn't bother me. What really was upsetting was the fact that she avoided us and didn't offer to take our order or get us water or anything. The music was rather loud and my husband and I felt like we had to shout to talk so we primarily just sat in silence while we waited. Eventually the waitress did stop by for a brief second just to say she still didn't have our drinks and walked away. We then decided this visit wasn't going to get any better so we left. read more

We came on a Wednesday night when the place was not at all busy. Took a while for a server to come to our table, after which we waited maybe 15 minutes for a beer that had to be ordered 3 times. Waited 40 minutes for a burger, grilled tilapia, and fries. Fish was served atop the pile of fries, which left them soggy and unsatisfying. Fish was bland, but was not dry, and there was a lot of it. Burger patty was child sized, unevenly cooked, and the toppings were not at all as described. No cilantro, certainly the green goo was not avocado (at best could be described as a squirt of guacamole sauce?), not sure about the other substance. My husband and I had never been to RJ's, but we are huge Bar Rescue fans so we ventured out this evening to see the amazing Corey Spector at the Frozen Cactus. It didn't look at all like what I think an 'after' Bar Rescue project should look like. I thought it looked like the 'before'. The chairs are stained plywood bottom/back. So they definitely don't say c'mon in and stay a while. But what I noticed even before taking in the decor was the temperature. Taffer screwed up naming it Frozen Cactus. Might have gone with Busted Swamp Cooler instead. It was about 74 degrees I would guess. As the first reviewer noted, there's nothing on the menu for someone who doesn't love spicy food. My hubs asked if I wanted chips and salsa, I wasn't sure because it said they were serving 'mesaca chips' which I've never heard of. I asked the waitress who said 'what'? She said, 'oh those are just corn tortilla chips we make ourselves'. Color us skeptical. Tucson is full of great Mexican food places with great homemade chips. This didn't taste like that. And the salsa was straight outta a jar. Almost nothing looks freshly painted. There's a newspaper rack with a 2' pile of (clean) shop towels stacked up right inside the door/lobby. We couldn't figure out what they might be for, so I asked. The waitress said that's what they use to wipe tables down with. There was a nasty mop bucket that I had to step over to get into the ladies room which had a door hanging off the hinge. None of these things make me want to go back, but the first thing we noticed (the temperature) would be a deal breaker for me. In the summer in Tucson, comfort is king and AC is what locals look for. Tucson's a basketball town... Taffer should have gone with a Wildcat theme with good AC. With the Wildcat house long gone, that would be a sportsbar hit. read more
