This is more like 3.5 stars but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt since it was our first time. The good: - ordered carry out and they were right on time. They said ready in 15-20 minutes and on the dot that's what it was. - solid Margherita pizza. NY style, large and brick oven. Good crisp crust with enough flavor to pack a mini punch. Needs improvement: - ingredients didn't seem super fresh. No flavor popped out. The mozzarella didn't seem super high quality. I want to give this place a better review since Mclean is short on decent places to eat, but it falls short. Interior is old school family owned Italian eatery which was common all over the US in days of yore. Smallish interior with a view of the kitchen. Lots of parking in their lot and a small outdoor seating area for those nice summer days. While the decor is legit family restaurant, the food is not something I'd bring my family for. Ordered the spaghetti with meatballs and tried the spaghetti and sausage. Spaghetti was al dente and properly prepared, the sauce was bland and seemingly from a jar, although I have no doubt it's made in house which makes me sad. The meatballs were very mushy and also flavorless, seemingly a sign that they are overdoing the bread to meat ratio which is not a good thing. The sausage was better, but not anything to rush back here for. Staff is very friendly and checks in often. Love an old-school Italian restaurant? Then Rocco's is for you. Located in Mclean, Rocco's offers hearty portions, reasonable prices, checkered table-tops, and very friendly service. Sahar and I checked out Rocco's after a tennis game. It was a beautiful night, so we sat outside and they were very accommodating of Maggie the Pug. It's worth it to split a carafe of wine, so we did. I ordered the eggplant parmigiana, which comes with a side of pasta and salad. Plus, you are given bread to start the meal. No complaints here. A very cheesy, tasty parmigiana, plus the sides, filled me up fast and gave me lunch for the next day. I love getting two meals from one. It's definitely casual, and it wasn't crowded, which I liked. There's plenty of seating inside, plus a few tables outside, and a decent amount of parking. It might not be a destination, but Rocco's is a good choice if Italian is what you are craving. read more

Came here tonight with a group of 8 friends to celebrate a birthday! I heard big things from one of our friends because she has been coming here since she was little. Rocco's delivered. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was all the smells wafting around the restaurant. It smelled like Italy - or how I imagine Italy smells? Service was good. Our server was checking in consistently throughout the night. My girlfriend and I started off with the fried calamari and it was pretty solid. We ended up having to add a little salt but the calamari was fried really nicely and the marinara was great. I got the potato gnocchi for my entree. The plate was pretty massive! Definitely a good sized portion for one person. The gnocchi was super soft and delicious and the meat sauce that topped it was awesome, but I didn't even really put a dent in it with the bread, salad, and appetizer preceding it. Rocco's is the staple of restaurants in McLean for over thirty years. I grew up in McLean in the 80's and this is the only place I know of that is still open from back then - and the reason is their deep dish pizza. I consider myself a deep dish aficionado, and I have never had better. The sauce is robust and flavorful, the crust is perfect (not too greasy), and there is more cheese than you can shake a stick at. I recommend skipping lots of toppings and going with plain cheese or pepperoni to fully enjoy this masterpiece and not bog it down with other flavors. If you are looking for a fancy Italian dinner with pork tenderloin, award winning salad, and a $50 bottle of wine, this is not the place for you. BUT if you want to take the family out for some of the best pizza in the area with a friendly staff and very reasonable prices this place can't be beat. We were excited to come here, we love Italian food and wanted to check it out!!! Salad was fresh with a very very watery dressing Calamari was just okay, too oily. Pizza was okay but the cheese wasn't melted properly and green peppers were undercooked. The veal parmigiana was terrible..... two very small pieces that didn't taste fresh at ALL. My wife and I have eaten pizza from Rocco's three or four times since we moved to Virginia, and we both absolutely love it. I read the Yelp reviews after we had already eaten there, and honestly remain completely confused by them. If I had read them prior to going to Rocco's, we probably would have gone somewhere else. The place sounds mediocre. Fortunately, we did get the chance to try this fantastic pizza. The first time we went was sometime in June 2012, and our waitress indicated they had just installed a new pizza oven. I think I remember someone on the Food Network describing how important the right oven is to the taste of pizza (although I might be making that up). Anywho, I'm wondering if this new oven has propelled the taste of Rocco's pizza far beyond what past reviewers experienced. I'm just trying to figure out the discrepancy, since I'm currently having an internal debate with myself about whether Rocco's serves the best pizza I've ever had. Three or four orders now, and each time has been amazing. We've gotten New York style each time so far, but I think next time we'll give the Chicago style a try. My fiance and I decided to try something new tonight, and the family owned/local feel of this restaurant appealed to us. It's nothing fancy, but I wasn't really interested in fancy tonight - just wanted a tasty meal and possibly a new favorite place to eat. I ordered the fettuccine alfredo with chicken (uploaded photo), and he ordered the chicken cacciatore. Both were served with a salad and garlic bread. I'm usually hesitant about ordering alfredo based dishes, as I typically enjoy rich, creamy sauces - and it's rare to find a restaurant that serves such. Took a risk tonight, and was disappointed. The sauce tasted strongly of egg, and had a grainy, soupy consistency. It wasn't necessarily watery, but not rich or creamy in the slightest. The pasta was prepared perfectly, however the chicken was pretty dry. My fiance said most of the chicken cacciatore tasted like it came out of a can - particularly the sauce and mushrooms. After tasting his, I couldn't disagree, but I'm fairly certain it was all prepared in the restaurant. It was visually impressive, unlike my fettuccine which was served on a comparatively small plate. The garlic bread was average - the kind of garlic bread you can buy frozen in a box is definitely tastier though. Wasn't impressed with the salad at all, especially the Italian dressing - it was watery(??). Had no flavor to it whatsoever. The lettuce was questionable, but the cucumbers were crisp. As far as price goes, if the salad had been something I wanted to finish - I suppose it would have been fair. My dish was $17.95 ($3 to add the chicken), and his was $15.95. Service was mediocre. She was friendly, but not phenomenal. No real complaints, and she got a good tip. Overall, we agreed that the subs or pizza probably would have been a much better option. Went for the first time after reading good yelp reviews. I got 2 pizzas to go - one was deep dish and the other New York style. Both pizzas were over cooked and the crust was burnt in areas and very dry overall. The sauce was decent, though nothing special. Same with the toppings. Overall I'd say the pizza taste is slightly below average. This is a problem when they are charging $15-$20 a pie. I really wanted to like this place because I'm sick of ordering from the pizza chain restaurants, and I am willing to pay a premium for better pizza. Unfortunately Rocco's is not any better than the papa Johns right down the street. I wouldn't recommend Roccos after my disappointing experience. My corned and I came here for dinner yesterday and we both had a fantastic experience. I had actually come to this restaurant on several occasions, but today was the first opportunity that zi had to write a review. There were probably about six other groups of people already seated by the time that we arrived, so it wasn't hard at all to find a table. We were greeted right away by our Sever, and she explained some of the dinner specials that they had going on.i already knew what I wanted even before we set foot into the place, and that was the spaghetti bolognese with a greek salad. This dish has always been a favorite of mine ever since I can remember, and the way they prepare it here is top notch. My friend ordered just the dinner salad. While we waited for our order to be prepared,we just chilled out drinking Coronas. Soon enough though the food was served and we both were able to eat to our heart's content. I felt like I was a character in a throwback movie in one of those cute Italian spots. Food: The lasagna was very good and noodles were perfectly firm. I grew up in the area, visit a few times a year, but never went to Rocco's until now. Met a friend here for a late lunch/early dinner. The house wines are great (I'm a wino/wine snob), but the food .... the food is excellent! My friend knows the owner and staff, so I got to find out the recipes are from generations back in their family. I love Italian food and this menu does not disappoint: light, fresh and well-seasoned calamari; a proper and perfect caprese with a rich balsamic reduction; succulent lasagna and a rich and creamy cannoli. Perfected family recipes, homey atmosphere, attentive, but not pushy, service. Good place to come watch the game (whatever game that is) or bring the family ... or reunite with old friends. What a great little place. Imagine affordable eats tucked away in McLean!?! According to the squeeze, who is a McLean native, this place has been here forever. It's easy to see why. It's cute. It's clean. Fabulous customer service! We tied up a table for hours for a biz meeting and not so much as one dirty look! We had the oven baked wings, chicken cheesesteak with the works and the Pope's Pleasure. All of it is was lick your plate clean tasty! Of note, the regular cheesesteaks must be frickin' awesome because there was at least one delivered to EVERY SINGLE TABLE!!! It's cute. It's quaint. The tables are nestled in close to one another. It's from another generation where camaraderie was important and social niceties were the norm. It's not for romantic or special occasions but leave your phones in the car and enjoy the pleasure of each other's company while you nosh on some outstanding eats. read more

The baked ziti with meatball was decent. The antipasti salad was romaine lettuce with a few slices of meat, regular sandwich tomatoes and possibly tuna fish. I wouldn't recommend it. The salad dressing was good. The chicken parm was not edible and I'll eat just about anything. I got a cartilage piece which I understand but the breading was not good and the marinara sauce had no flavor. I sadly threw it out. The side of pasta with the chicken parm was good. Like many who grew up in the area, I have fond recollections of Rocco's that span my childhood, adolescent and adult years. That the family-style southern Italian restaurant has successfully remained in business for over 30 years is a testament to this no-nonsense establishment whose straight-forward, quality food and Chianti basket-bottle, red-checked tablecloth décor has changed little since the Juliano family first opened Rocco's in 1977. Back then, Rocco - seated at the table facing the door, wearing an untucked short-sleeved shirt and studying the daily horse racing forms - would greet patrons with, "How many?" and then gesture, "Over there, or over there." Peroxide blonde waitresses brought huge plates of macaroni and deep-dish, Sicilian-style pizzas to hungry diners. Cash was the only form of payment accepted. And Rocco's big red Cadillac would be parked prominently outside. From the day it opened, Rocco's found a receptive and eager audience. You see, choices for pizza in McLean in 1977 were, well, slim. You had the now-defunct Shakey's for mediocre, nondescript pizzas (although just about everyone I know had a birthday party there as a kid). There was Luciano's at Tyson's for New York street vendor, fold-it-in-half pizza. Fancy California wood-fired pizzas didn't exist here. Nor did Domino's deliver its ubiquitous pies. To be sure, Rocco's pizzas were ground-breaking unless you had hailed from Chicago or New York - like my mother - where pizza is religion, and vice versa. My mom and sister would typically order the Mamma Mia Sicilian-style pizza (a/k/a Chicago deep dish). This masterpiece is topped with a trinity of pork (pepperoni, sausage and, yes, slices of crisp bacon) and veggies. Because it's deep dish, it takes a while to bake. But, oh, it's worth it. The tomato sauce, heavy on oregano, has a flavor that is unique unto Rocco's. And unlike Chicago pizzas from Gino's or Uno's whose outer crusts are massive, Rocco's are smaller and softer, with ingredients that span all the way to an edge that is caramelized with cheese. For part of my life, I didn't - gulp - eat pizza. (Don't worry, after years of intense therapy, I became a pizza aficionado) Instead, I'd order the fettuccine Alfredo, a huge platter of al dente pasta tossed with the famous cream sauce. Having eaten at Alfredo's in Rome, purportedly the home of the Original Fettuccine Alfredo, I can attest that Rocco's version isn't in the same league, even though the menu states that Rocco was taught by the iconic restaurant's chef. Still, it's rich and satisfying comfort food. A younger generation of Julianos now operates the restaurant but continues to honor the time-tested recipes developed by its founders. Similarly, a new generation of patrons - the children of those of us who grew up eating at Rocco's - now flock to the family-style Italian restaurant to order a Mamma Mia pie. This restaurant is the heart and soul of McLean and I think they might have real Italians working there to boot! I have been here about 5 or 6 times and have not been disappointed once. The food is not out of this world but everything is very good and kept a good price point perhaps the perfect point on that bell curve! A unique but good taste on traditional dishes including pizza! The service is bar none and unexpected for the homely little diner style restaurant that it is. I remember ordering about 15 pizzas for a party once they were all perfect! Years ago my wife and I would come here with my inlaws quite often, but then something happened, I think my wife or mother inlaw ate something that didnt agree with them and we had not been back in years. About 3 months ago, I had my 3 year old daughter with me, took her to a park to play and I decided to take her here for lunch, and I got the Spaghetti and meatballs and my daughter got the childrens spaghetti. It was very good. At first, I was not sure what to think of the meatball, but after the first bite, I really enjoyed it. The meatballs are made fresh and I think thats what threw me off, not used to fresh meatballs. Anways, took my wife and daughter there last night. All you can eat Pasta and pizza for 8.95. WOW. I got the spaghetti and it was excellent. I do not know the last time I enjoyed spaghetti that much. The meat sauce is incredible. Its homemade, and the pasta cooked perfect. I only ate one plate full they gave me so much. The only downside, was the waitress. I think she was new. She thought they only had sweet tea and not unsweet, but they do have unsweet, and she never asked me if I wanted a second plate of spaghetti. If I would have wanted another plate I sure would have told her. Average Italian restaurant in McLean. Family owned place that has been here for as long as I can remember. The last time I visited before today was probably in middle school, and it looks exactly as I remember it. The tables and chairs definitely look worn. The creaky chairs are a bit uncomfortable, but it does contribute to the very lived-in feel of this place. I got a salad and the baked ziti. The italian dressing on the salad just tasted bitter and like onions. The salad was mostly just lettuce, carrot, and onions: I wish I had ordered a different dressing. The baked ziti, however, tasted good. Pasta and cheese covered in sauce with a very large meatball and a side of bread. I had to save half of it for later. 5 stars for their meatball sub. I ordered a whole sub and was thinking of splitting it with my coworker, but after I took a bite into it I knew I couldn't share it. Oh yeah, go ahead and order the Peroni Italian beer to wash it all down. Mmm mmm. I am no longer a beer snob. People say the pizza is pretty good, but I've tried the pepperoni pizza and didn't think it was out of this world. My other coworker ordered a cheese calzone and raved about it. I coulda sworn I've reviewed this place before but I guess not. I have worked across the street from Rocco's for about the last six years or so and have been a very regular customer for that whole time. They have never, ever let me down. Pat, Mike, Tito, and everyone in the kitchen....they are my favorite people in all of McLean. When I returned to the area after five months on the road, Rocco's was one of my first stops. I craved their pizza the whole time I was gone. Usually I do take-out and my usual go-to is their 10" lunch pizza with sausage. The sausage is sliced, which is my preference, and the crust is crispy and flavorful. Their sauce is very robust - there is a LOT going on in that sauce. I will admit it took me a couple visits to Rocco's before I got used to their sauce. Once I did, however, I was totally won over. I have eaten in a few times and the service has always been great and I don't think it's just because they know me. I usually get pizza but I've also gone for their Italian specialties a few times and - holy moly - that is some good stuff. Their manicotti is a hot mess of cheese and meat sauce and is to die for. Whatever you do, make sure you get a meatball or two. It's the size of your fist and is utterly delicious. I had never had gnocchi with red sauce before Rocco's but I was instantly sold. I would order it more but the huge portion, for lunch time at that, pretty much put me right to sleep. As good Italian should. My wife was raised Italian, not too far from New York, and she is a brutal, brutal critic of Italian restaurants in this area. She pretty much hates 'em all. Rocco's is one of only a couple of places in this neck of the woods that she has given the thumbs-up to. Because it is just that good. There are definitely a few areas where Rocco's could improve, but that has nothing to do with their food or their service. They could go for a remodel though, maybe brighten the place up, expand the dining room maybe, and build a bar. They have the liquor license and they have the TVs. If they had a bar it would be a perfect spot to post up, grab some beers and snacks, and watch some games. That would be a great way to unwind after work, rather than deal with traffic. The other area where they could improve is that they should offer delivery, at least to a limited part of McLean. Sometimes I just can't get out of the office but I want a pizza and I'm sure there are plenty of other folks in the area who would get in on this. Those are only minor constructive bits of criticism. After taking in the Arcimboldo and Pre-Raphaelite shows at the National Gallery (both excellent) we found ourselves on the GW Parkway at the start of rush hours without having eaten anything since a late breakfast. When we turned off GW to find something in McLean, the going got a little rough. We passed a place called Rocco's and continued on briefly until I pulled into a shopping center to Yelp a little. Kazan sounded good, but it and most of the other places that we called were closed between lunch and supper. Then I remembered Rocco's. With a name like that, they might be the real deal, so we Android-navigated via the Yelp app to Rocco's. Nice staff and a lotta interesting choices on the menu, but the seafood pizza hit my eye (when the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's amore). We rolled the dice and ordered a big one for the three of us. It took just the right amount of time that a made to order pizza should take, and the half-carafe of house chianti didn't hurt a bit, either. Man, was that a tasty pizza! Just the right amount of everything made it easy enough to eat by hand, and the light mozzarella didn't smother the excellent flavor of the seafood sauce base. Beyond the usual option of shrimp, this baby included fresh tasting sauteed clams, mussels, and scallops, all to good effect. (Anchovies are available, but we forgot to ask for them). I have had thinner, lighter crust, but this one tasted very nicely of wheat and held up to the end, when I found myself finishing the edge crust on my last slice, something I don't usually do. I hope that the next time that we're in the area and are hungry, we have one or more people in our party so that we can order another seafood pizza (they'll probably twist my arm to try another combo), a medium one this time, and some some other things. Did I mention that the seafood sauce tasted like it had clam juice in it, and that it wasn't sweet, sour, salty, too thin, or too thick? I will! read more

Not sure why the average rating of Roccos is 4 stars...the quality of this food is subpar at best. Myself and others have felt sick almost every time after we've eaten there (10+ times). There's definitely something suspect about the sauce they use for their pizza and pasta. The staff are friendly and I hate to give bad reviews, but I'd be lying if I said this place is worth visiting. read more

Our waiter, Bobby, was curt and seemed like most of his human interface was spent on his phone ... couldn't have been more disinterested in customer service. Took my family to dinner here while visiting the DC area. We ordered some pasta dishes and two of the kids ordered pizza. Their house sauce is this thick, highly acidic, oregano-heavy, tomato glop that seems canned but probably isn't (more than likely it's been sitting on the stove simmering all day). The pizzas were over-baked, and slightly burnt around the edges, and tasted mediocre. Prices are in line with what an average restaurant meal costs in McLean, though we would soon discover much better food for the same money in the area. Two of our meals came with a choice of salads and we ordered Caesars. What we got was iceberg lettuce, cucumbers, and some institutional croutons, covered in what tasted like a vinegar-heavy "Wishbone Italian dressing". A Caesar salad is typically Romaine lettuce with a dressing comprised of egg yolks, garlic, anchovies, Worcester sauce, Parmesan cheese, bread croutons, and olive oil, which this clearly wasn't. When I brought this to the attention of the waiter he replied that these were in fact Caesar salads. Since it would seem that we would've got the same salad regardless of what we ordered, I didn't see any point in enlightening him, so we finished our meals and promptly left. read more
