One of my new favorite açaí bowl spots! Came by for a post workout treat after kickboxing on Sunday and Roots & Rye definitely hit the spot. Nestled in that little alley next to The Dog Bakery and Cafe 86, it's a cute little spot to grab an açaí bowl. I wanted to try the charcoal coconut flavor and it was very interesting and blended nicely with the pitaya that I chose. There's also a pretty blue blend that I plan on trying next time. I love the unlimited toppings option because I like to pile up on all of the fruit and toppings. There's also a variety of granola flavors which Is nice because you can always try a new flavor every time you come. I chose the Honey Almond one and it added just the right amount of crunch and sweetness! I've never tried it before but it has the prettiest shade of blue and was a separate base. Taste like ice cream. The bowl was amazing. Perhaps the best I have ever tasted and other places can not compare. If only it was easier to find parking I would go here all the time. The price is good and they even have me $1 off coupon since it was my first visit for next time. Really like their acai bowls here, as well as, the friendly service. I got the acai base with a mix of overnight oats and granola, topped with berries, bananas, toasted and raw coconut, almond butter and some chia seeds. The texture, freshness and sweetness level were perfect. We also got the avocado toast on the country bread with all the seeds sprinkled on top. What really makes this place unique is that they have a hug variety of bases (instead of your standard acai and pitaya) that you can choose from. In fact, you can get as many as you like! I love a strong green tea taste, and the texture of overnight oats makes each bite chewy and solid. Roots & Rye is definitely my go-to spot in the 626 for acai bowls. I've come a bunch of times since COVID began, and it's consistently hit the spot with quality, flavor, and portions. I'm a huuuuuge fan of the blue majik base and highly recommend it (they were out the day I took this picture). The bases are all very creamy & smooth without being too sweet, and all the toppings are always fresh. I love that they don't limit the toppings; it makes it so much more fun to create your bowl, and the employees often even suggest additional toppings. I also love watching them cut up all the fruits + drizzling the nut butter / honey on top; such a satisfying experience! My mother and I come here 3-4 times a week after my workouts. 90% of the time it is a great experience and the acai bowls are amazing Two days ago we visited the store and the young petite girl behind the counter decided to cop a huge attitude because she barely put any acai in my bowl and filled it with overnight oats. Normally I would ignore this but she went so far as to start slamming things down and had another girl take care of us and left mid order. I am beyond polite probably to the point of annoying making sure to always use please and thank you. It's was beyond noticeable and completely uncomfortable. When we asked for the young lady's name and how to contact the owner the other employee refused to give us her name and said there was no way to contact them. This is a lie I own a business and there is always a way to get ahold of someone for a customer that is unhappy. My real issue is that I got and email address and emailed the owners to let them know what had happened so that they could address the issue with their employee. This experience was bad enough that to be honest neither of us feel the need to come back to this location. I don't need to pay $10 for an acai bowl to get treated like crap by one of their employees. So two days have gone by and no response from management or the owners. It is really unfortunate that this is the way they decided to handle a simple ask for more acai in my bowl. They have lost two customers that frequent their location 3-4 a week because of an attitude problem and lack of response. As a business owner I cannot supposed businesses that do not take care of their customers. There is a place like this that is similar in Orange County, and it's pretty sad to me how far away that is, but now here is Roots & Rye to satisfy all my acai bowl cravings in LA. I generally like those in my acai bowl anyways but they take it to another level. The charcoal coconut has the right level of sweetness that I don't think all places get correct and the chia pudding is pretty dense in a good way. One tip my husband discovered is to ask for your nut butter choice after the sorbets are added but before the toppings are added. It makes it easier to mix and eat, and you might get a little more too. The staff that was working the counter was really kind and friendly too. It was too pretty to eat! Tasted very fresh and I thought the small was the perfect amount in a bowl and more affordable than other açaí places I've been to. I also ordered a smoothie ($8 + tax and only comes in one size). I used oat milk with the açaí blend (açaí, strawberries, bananas, blueberries, and goji berries), with peanut butter and cacao powder. Ordered online via their website for pick up and it was easy peasy! I've missed my weekly Roots & Ryes bowl and this was SUCH a treat to have on a picnic last week. For those of you who haven't read my original review of this place, the thing that's awesome about it is they offer unlimited smoothie bases and toppings for a flat price. Can you even?! Not only do you get to flex your creative muscles by coming up with the ultimate smoothie bowl combo, but you also get all the stuff you want without spending an arm and a leg. They have curbside pick up available but I'm always unsure about driving down this alley in Old Town, so I dropped my partner off and he snagged the bowls and met me around the block. The staff put the bowls in a back with spoons and napkins and even wrote a "have a good day" message on the front. I love Roots & Rye and am totally rooting for them. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! As I continue my quest to sample all of the acai bowls of Los Angeles, Roots and Rye may be a contender for leader of the pack for some many tasty reasons. First, I think that it's pretty clear from their website and others' reviews that their bowls (and smoothies) are incredibly customize-able. There are multiple sizes (the small is $7, and is still very filling), multiple types of bases(açaí, blue majik, charcoal coconut, etc), and soooo many topping options - unlimited and no extra cost! The Acai base is firm and creamy; it doesn't melt too quickly and is smooth enough to mesh with all the accoutrements. My only suggestions would be to chop the fruit a little thinner. My strawberry topping in particular was kinda chunky and it made eating the bowl a little difficult. First world problems though. read more
