I came here last night for a work dinner. We ordered a variety of dishes: -Grilled octopus (tough and very dry. Very sad because I usually enjoy this type of dish a lot. It needs a sauce on top.) -Mini seafood tower (no explanation needed, although they could have told us what the sauces were.) -Wagyu tataki (delicious) -Scallop (I didn't realize it was one single scallop. Superb steak, outstanding service, awesome vibe. I ordered the 12oz weatholme strip and my date got the 10oz Duke filet. We ordered sides of spicy broccolini, parm truffle fries and spinach. Sides of béarnaise sauce for both. The westholme strip was recommended by our server (who was awesome) when I said I wanted to try something different but wasn't willing to pony up the money for Japanese wagyu. It was easily one of the best steaks I've ever had and was cooked perfectly. Steak had an amazing crust to it and was amazingly tender and flavorful. I didn't even use the sauce on it because it was just so good. The duke filet was very good but in comparison to my steak it just wasn't even in the same class.... But my date was very pleased with it. The spinach and fries were awesome. Broccolini wasn't anything special. For dessert we shared a coffee crème brûlée that was very light and had great flavor. Excellent whiskey selection. Prices are on par with whiskey bars but not outrageous compared to some places. They had a full whiskey list with prices which made selecting easy. (Full pappy line up, BTAC, lots of their own single barrel picks, nice scotch selection). For two people we spent $400+ not including tip. It's not a cheap place but we could have gotten only one side and not spent $100 on two drinks and made it out for a little over 200 if we wanted. Well with it. I went for restaurant week. We had a 7 pm reservation and had to wait 30 minutes to sit down. The appetizers were fantastic. The steak frites were honestly pathetic. The steak was super small, over cooked and did not taste good. The frites were these weird super thin crispy potatoes. The steak sauce was good at least. I bet the non restaurant steaks are good. It was a Tuesday night and the place was packed! Our server gave us a rundown of the menu and gave us a few recommendations. Everything that we ordered was amazing and flavorful. Our favorite was the whipped mashed potatoes. The Brussels sprouts were flaky and crisp which was something we were not used to but a welcome change. The overall restaurant was very clean and minimalist in decor. The lighting could be a bit dark but it was dinner hours. This restaurant is wildly overrated and wildly overpriced. We ordered the cowboy steak and bone in ribeye. Both cooked to a perfect medium rare. Ribeye was flavorful and tender but unremarkable to any other ribeye I have eaten. Cowboy steak was subpar and rather tasteless. The sides were average and all extremely buttery. Cauliflower au gratin was good, but I could only take a couple bites as it was so rich. Brussel sprouts were crispy. Millionaire potato was slightly dry. The highlight of the meal was the coal roasted king crab which was phenomenal but also phenomenally overpriced at 43 for the meat from less than one leg! For dessert we got the Oreo sundae which they poured chocolate over. It was average and probably something I could make at home, but good nonetheless. Overall RPM is just your average steakhouse in taste, but way up there in price. They have some "super rare" cuts of beef that are upwards or $1000, yes 1k that is not a typo. But even if I could afford that, I don't think I would be able to taste the difference between a nice $100 Wagyu steak. read more

They were very warm and sweet and my other favorite was the white truffle risotto although we were told about this verbally as it was a special and we were not given a price we assumed it would be somewhere around $20 like the rest of the appetizers, but the white truffle is really expensive so the risotto dish ended up being $110 more than anyone's entrée it was good however, next time I would just rather a normal risotto for an average price than this expensive white truffle. The crabcake was not good. The whipped potatoes were great. I would definitely get those again. The chocolate cake and the gelato were also delicious. We were told we were getting a surprise dessert, it ended up being that cotton candy. My wife and I dine often in river north and for steaks we typically end up at RPM Steakhouse but the last couple of time I left DISAPPOINTED with the temperature of the wagyu. The last time we came in on a slow night. I ended up with Westholme Strip and my wife had NY Strip, both steaks requested at medium temperature. The NY Strip came out at perfect temperature, where the Westmoles was medium rare. I refuse to send a piece of $125 steak for a reheat. With so many other steakhouses in the area it's time to venture out and find a different steakhouse to frequent in. If you are sitting at RPM scrolling thru reviews like most of us these days, I do want to mention that RPM has always made great drinks and has a very friendly wait staff. I strongly recommend their seafood tower. Also, leave some room for desert. I had shared few deserts with my wife and they are always delicious. If only they can hit the temperature right on steaks, especially higher quality cuts, this restaurant can easily get all around 5 star reviews. read more

I love RPM restaurants. I'd never been to RPM steak, a friend works nearby and recommended it while I was in town visiting. We had such a lovely time with the bartender Jonathan or Jacob, can't remember. He's witty, funny and makes a great drink. We were headed out and I paid my tab and left nearly a 30% tip which was on par with the great service from the only bartender that services us the whole night - specifically J. As I'm sitting at the bar finishing my drink, with my signed tab in front of me, this chaotic woman bartender that did not serve us or interact with us at all grabs the check and goes to the computer. This is always a turn off from any establishment - let the person who spent the last hour+ with us collect the tab. I tipped MY bartender, let him pick it up. This isn't a crowded dive bar trying to close out dozens of $20 tabs, this is supposed to be a nice restaurant that you can get a full steakhouse dinner at the bar with dedicated service. So, I'm at the coat check and they come and accuse me of leaving without signing my check.... COME THE F ON.... Ruined the whole experience which before that was lovely. They had to re-print the check for me to sign again (which the chaotic woman did incorrectly at first - she printed the wrong tab, bc of course she can't keep track of things). MAYBE, if the crazy, chaotic, frantic woman didn't hastily grab the check off the bar, she wouldn't have lost the signed copy and the blank one (bc I left them both). Maybe she should've let the bartender that serviced me the entire night take the check, observe the tip, and close the tab! It's a Monday night. I hate to see the service that frantic woman gives on a busy weekend. The ONLY bad attitude and service I've had at an RPM. I love RPM Italian and seafood and the one in Vegas, we go there frequently. This one could use some service training. I took my family for a celebration dinner and came away extremely disappointed. I've tried at least three other top rated steakhouses in Chicago recently, and RPM was by far the worst experience. Wine / drinks - we ordered standard white and red wine and they were definitely nothing to write home about, very average quality to slightly subpar Salad - caesar salad was average and salty Appetizers - we didn't order a lot as we were saving space for the main courses so we only got the shrimp cocktail. It was fine but pretty average Steak - we got the Westholme Strip after seeing many positive reviews and photos on Yelp. It was very salty and chewy. It was also served close to rare even though I had asked for medium - definitely disappointed as this was supposed to be our highlight of the dinner Sides - bacon mac & cheese was pretty good but the parmesan spinach was very, very salty (consistent theme throughout the dinner) Dessert - by then it was "no, thank you" Service - the waiter was attentive and polite so I gave her a healthy tip despite the bad experience with food. The front desk staff were friendly and greeted me happy birthday which was very sweet. We were seated on time and brought to a big booth for two facing the dining room, which we loved! The aesthetics and the dim lighting was perfect for a romantic dinner, but enough for a family dinner. We were greeted quickly by our server with waters and a birthday greeting which I appreciated. I ordered the crystal Paloma and it was suprisingly sweet and not overwhelming with tequila. We also ordered the 16 oz. Delmonico Ribeye steak, medium rare, and topped with rosemary and garlic butter along with Parmesan spinach, bacon mac n' cheese, and black truffle fries for sides. The steak was perfectly done! I always end up with super rare steaks when I eat towards the middle of the steak, and I was so impressed with how the steak was made! We ordered fries, crab rolls, and wagyu tartare for happy hour bites before ordering several apps (king crab, brussels sprouts, millionaire potatoes, crudo, and ceviche), a steak to share, and a table-side dessert (Baked Alaska). We probably could've ordered less off the happy hour menu since I was starting to get full before we even got our dry aged steak. They delivered by customizing the writing on the menu, making mention of the celebration, and delivering a happy birthday cotton candy cloud. The food was exceptional. For appetizers we went with the Australian Wagyu Tataki. Portion size was small, understandable, but was packed with flavor in every bite. It served well in satiating us until the tomahawk, truffle fries, and mushrooms were delivered. RPM Steak, this beautiful restaurant located in River North Chicago, had what is touted to be the Best Burger In Chicago - and it actually was that good. This smashburger was amazing, make no mistake about that; the size, shape, consistency, cohesiveness and beauty of this sandwich was perfect. But, it got me to thinking; was it better than The Drop In burger that I had last week, or Mott St.'s, or Izakaya's, or Red Hot Ranch, or The Rootstock Bar's, all here in Chicago? I'm thinking, maybe, not. RPM's $32.00 smash-burger was totally worth the price. Made with ground wagyu, which has a higher fat content than most ground beef, this high-end Japanese cattle are raised to have this incredible meat. I love the "marble" wag beef gives you. My Caesar Salad with anchovies and deviled egg was excellent. One of my better ones. I'm going to stop seeking (what the best burger is) and now just enjoy in "real time" the experience of what I'm eating. They reserved a premium table for us, personalized a menu, and gave us a complimentary glass of champagne and dessert! The steaks were decent and the sides were good. We came here for pre Mother's Day celebration and had really high expectation about the food as our previous visits were fantastic. The appetizers, thick cut bacon, king crab leg, and cheese bread, were really tasty. The cocktails, with alcohol and without alcohol, were refreshing. However, the main course was way off. We ordered the Tomahawk, 4 oz snow wagyu, salmon, black cod, and wagyu burger. The Tomahawk was almost terrible, especially given the price. The meat was very chewy, but since we shared it, I couldn't tell if I just had a really bad cut. I am guessing it might be because of the accommodation they made for our dairy allergy. The temperature and time for cooking must be different for butter and oil. But this is a steak house, I'd expect they know how to cook steak with different oil. Snow wagyu, on the other hand, didn't have such issue. The server did mention they don't use butter for wagyu beef. Salmon was a little undercooked in the thickest part and the fish was sitting on a pond of grease toward the end. It did take me a long time to finish the dish, so that could be a combination of grease and juice from the fish. We had 2 dirty martinis with blue cheese stuffed olives (a must for us at a steakhouse!), shredded kale salad, The Duke ribeye, Vintage Prairie Farm sweet corn, whipped potatoes, and the Baked Alaska. The shredded kale salad was different and unique and I enjoyed it. The ribeye was very good, but honestly not one of the best I have ever had, and the corn was phenomenal! The corn side was arguably the best part of our meal lol. The whipped potatoes were pretty standard. The Baked Alaska is a fun dessert to order and it was yummy. I have been fortunate to enjoy some pretty good fine dining (maybe even upscale) experiences... A few years ago, I learned my preference for cooking my favorite steak, the filet mignon, was RARE +. Initially, to me, I thought that meant it would be more rare than rare, but it was explained that it was in between rare and medium rare... Up until last night, I had my filets cooked that way for probably at least the last four years, all with varying degrees of success around that understanding, but none of them made me walk away and say, "That was it - that is EXACTLY how RARE + should be..." Until last night. Perfect. Immaculate. Genuine. Now, for the rest of the review. We (group of 5) started off with the Parker House Rolls. With just enough salt sprinkled on top and the perfect amount of yeastiness / fluffiness for my taste, they were a great beginning. We had (more than one) order of the bacon for an appetizer. Me being a farm boy at heart, you can always get my attention with bacon; sometimes I want some of the bacon, other times, like Ron Swanson, I want ALL of it... Well. I had NEVER had bacon prepared like this before, but I can promise you it won't be the last. Everyone at our table agreed if the portion sizes were increased, this dish could easily serve as its own entree... As I've already monologued on the steak, I have to mention the sides, or at least one of them... We had the bacon mac-n-cheese (yes, more bacon - that's NEVER a bad thing in my opinion) and it was as good or better than any I've ever had. 11/10. Throughout the meal, I sipped on the recommended Cabernet Sauvignon and it was one of the best I've enjoyed in recent memory and was a perfect accompaniment to all of my selections. To top off the great meal, I finished up with a section of the Baked Alaska flambéed tableside and portioned out. It was absolutely delicious with a myriad of flavors within each bite - not competing against each other, but rather complementing... Also, I tremendously enjoy a glass of Port wine to top off my meal, and my standard deference is a Tawny, but the waitress talked me into something a little different (and a little cheaper), and for the life of me (embarrassed) I can't remember what it was, but I was surprisingly delighted! It was just a little bit more lively than the Tawny I was used to and exactly the best way to end the meal. (So, my suggestion is to always consider the server's recommendations!) Finally, as we were finishing our last bites, the Manager, Dion, made his way to our table and we engaged in conversation for several minutes. He genuinely made us feel like he was appreciative of our being there and wanted to make sure we had a good experience, which we did. As our group was familiar with RPM in Washington, DC, and one of us in attendance had set up this reservation due to previous experiences with them, he wanted to make sure this location met our expectations, which it absolutely did... RPMs catering services are incredible and they went absolutely above and beyond to make my family party a huge success! I had an extraordinarily positive experience from start to finish - from submitting my initial inquiry online to my partner chatting with the delivery food driver at the drop-off, everyone was a kind, caring, and experienced professional. I cannot sing the RPM catering staff's praises enough. I was hosting a party for my family in a space where there was little to no heating elements. Most drop-off catering services will provide cold food that you will need to reheat (e.g. see Whole Foods, Marianos, Goddess and Grocer, etc.). I did not have that capability (nor capacity) to reheat entire dishes at the event venue. RPM ensured my dishes arrived hot and ready, and took the time to confirm the food and my experience was satisfactory. My sincere and most heart-felt thanks to the catering staff - Makayla, Caitlin, and ESPECIALLY Amanda who held my proverbial hand when I had a full-blown panic. Had a delightful dinner experience! Despite a slight wait, the positive interactions among the staff and their willingness to help customers created a warm and wholesome atmosphere. The anecdote about the guy and his charger, as well as the host knowing the family by name, adds a personal touch to the dining experience. let me start off by saying I live in Los Angeles however I do visit Chicago multiple times a year and every single time I always go here to grab dinner hands-down one of the best steaks I've ever had is the filet mignon at this establishment. Not to mention, they also give you a gravy boat of whatever sauce you want to put on your steak. We came here for my birthday dinner. We obviously made reservations, and even though this place was packed when we arrived, we were still able to get seated down right away. The staff here was great and made sure I had a great birthday night. We started off with their Truffled Cheese-Baked Focaccia. This was really tasty but unfortunately very filling. Although our server did state that it takes longer than usual, which is no problem, they brought out our steaks soon after. The focaccia was freshly baked and was very flavorful. My wife ordered their "Duke" steak. A 10 oz ribeye fillet. I ordered their Bone-in Ribeye. We also ordered their Mac & Cheese to share as our side. This was already way too much food then we could handle but it was all tasty. The Duke was very tender and juicy. It was perfectly seasoned, and my bone in ribeye was perfectly cooked at medium rare. It was also tender but not as flavorful as their Duke. The Mac & Cheese was also good. It was very creamy and came with mushrooms and bacon. Im not a big fan of mushrooms in Mac and cheese but they made it work. Unfortunately, I did not leave enough room for dessert , but I'll definitely be returning. Returning to RPM Steakhouse for a birthday dinner was a fantastic choice, and I'm thrilled to share that the experience was excellent once again. Our girls' night out, filled with wine, appetizers, sides, and dessert (the ultimate "Girl Dinner"), was exactly what we needed. Our excellent server had the best recommendations, and recommended the 14k Gold Chocolate Cake and the Blueberry Compote Cheesecake, and though we chose the cheesecake, we were delighted with a complimentary happy birthday cotton candy ball that added a sweet touch to our celebration. The upscale ambiance made it the perfect start to our holiday weekend. read more
