One of these efforts is this community and urban incubator farm which was established by Cultivate South Phoenix (CUSP) to give residents of South Phoenix affordable access to healthy food while encouraging them to appreciate active living and healthy roots of their cultures. At the Saturday farmer's market you can get very locally grown produce and craft items while taking in the cultural performances of local talents. The site of Spaces of Opportunity includes a 10-acre incubator farm where quarter-acre to one-acre plots of land are made available with a preference to farmers who are part of the South Phoenix community and who have limited resources. Also, community members can rent a plot to plant, grow and harvest produce for their own use or to share with others - and the rental fee is an super-affordable $5 a month! I love that here I was able to get fresh locally grown produce as well as craft items to be given as presents and in so doing I celebrate the culture and encourage the efforts of South Phoenix gardeners, farmers and farm workers.

Some of our favorite flavors were the strawberry, strawberry cheesecake, chocolate, butter pecan and cotton candy. I also ended up getting their seasonal latte, which was the cookies and cream. Their staff member was so kind letting us both try an assortment of flavors. You can also try their different milk flavors and my kiddo wanted to try the banana milk which he loved and it tasted like banana taffy to him. My kiddo played on their dairy truck, which had a variety of little toys inside. We sat at one of the tables enjoying our treats. I know in the past they used to offer tours, but they don't have that anymore. I'm hoping that maybe they'll have it again sometime in the future. Inside the dairy refrigerator, there are many types of milks. You can choose from whole milk, 2%, half and half, heavy cream, cookies and cream milk, strawberry milk, chocolate milk, coffee milk, banana milk and cold brew. Also, there was a variety of juices like lemonade, strawberry lemonade, orange juice, limeade, cherry limeade. Keep in mind that a two dollar deposit is required for each bottle that is purchased however, you can return those bottles at any location that sells Danzeisen. (Danzeisen, Safeway, frys, Whole Foods, sprouts, etc.) What a cute spot to check out while we were on this side of town! The highlight would definitely be the variety of ice creams and shakes offered!

Now over a year into this pandemic, Arizona Microgreens has stood the test of time as one of the few consistent spots still selling them with zero decrease in quality. I'm pretty simple - pea sprouts and arugula are usually my go-tos. But all of their stuff is incredibly clean - both literally and in taste. You get a lot for what you order. And I love the fact that you can order online and pickup straight from their greenhouse in the middle of the week. They're so good that I can get my little brother to wolf down their broccoli greens without even asking what it is. If that's not a ringing endorsement, I don't know what is.

If you are not familiar with a CSA and how it work, here's a down and dirty explanation. You pay a certain amount of money in advance for several months of veggies each week. In this case, Maya's farm charges about $300 for 12 weeks of a whole heck of a lot of veggies that are certified organic. You support your local farmers and you know where your food is coming from. I recommend that you swing by the farm and take a stroll around. You might see Maya. I've met her and I think she's a very nice person. I will update this review with more info but I think the pictures that I post of Maya's Farm CSA speak for themselves. My only wishlist with Maya's farm is to have a half-basket. My small family and I can't finish all the veggies in one week.

I stopped in on a very specific mission: ingredients for a ridiculous pozole-pho fusion experiment. I'd already been to one of my usual Asian markets, forgot half of what I needed (because apparently I like making life difficult), and figured I'd give this place a shot. My first thought walking in was, "Oh, this is smaller than I expected." About three minutes later I realized, "No... it's just efficiently packed." The produce section keeps going farther than you think, the shelves are stocked with all the staples I recognize, and then you hit the meat department... and wow. Seafood, pork, lamb, goat, beef bones, organ meats--you name it, they probably have it. If you're looking for something that makes the average grocery store employee say, "We don't carry that," this is probably where you'll find it. I grabbed pho spices, fish sauce (and was genuinely excited to find a vegan fish sauce option!), two pounds of beef bones, and an onion for about $15. Honestly? I expected to spend more. I also stumbled across a Jamaican section, which completely caught me off guard in the best way. I was there with tunnel vision, otherwise I probably would've wandered around for another half hour convincing myself I suddenly needed ingredients for three different cuisines. The checkout was quick, the cashier was friendly, and while the parking lot was surprisingly quiet, don't let that fool you. This isn't one of those giant, chaotic destination markets, feels more like the neighborhood spot where people already know they can find what they need. It is nicely organized which made my quick stop in very easy. I'll definitely be back. Next time I'm giving myself permission to actually browse instead of speed-running my shopping list. Something tells me I'll leave with way more than I came for... and honestly, I'm okay with that.
