I don't do fast or fast-ish food often, so I had some questions about the menu. Even though it was lunchtime, Ivette, at the counter, had a wonderful friendly attitude and patiently answered all my questions. I ordered mango avocado salad with beef. It also has quinoa, brown rice, baby greens and tortilla strips. I got a very large, generous bowl of eye-pleasing salad, much better than what I was expecting. Often, the beef used for salads can be chewy and grisly. This wasn't. It was well-flavored, tender, and plentiful. The salad was balanced and delicious. That nice Ivette, who took my order, and turned out to be a shift manager, was everywhere. She took orders, served food, bussed tables, all with a smile. I also saw her put some dishes together in the kitchen. She even stopped by my table to see if everything was OK, and when I said that I wished there was a little more quinoa/rice mix in the salad, brought me some extra rice. How often do you see staff at a fast-ish food place stop by your table to inquire if you're happy? That is one shift manager any boss would dream to have. But as I was standing in line i saw the picture of the Oaxacan Shrimp Taco plate and I decided to break tradition - they looked so good. in the picture they were stuffed with shrimp and avocado. WOW. What a difference. The plate looked nothing like the picture. The tacos were not stuffed by any stretch of the imagination. There were two little pieces of avocado, probably five shrimp and a small dollop of beans amidst a scattering of chips. The flavor was good but the portion and presentation was lacking. Ever since my wife and I moved to Downey, we have been regulars to this location, and I've been meaning to write this review but I kept holding it off until I got the name of the gentleman who ALWAYS gives us great service, and today is finally the day; Joel, thank you for going above and beyond to ensure we have a great experience at Rubio's. Joel not only greeted us very kindly, he made sure we enjoyed our food, offered to get our utensils, napkins and salsa for us, and then after we finished eating, he showed up and offered to take our plates for us (that has never happened at any other Rubio's location). This place is great. All the options are great and they always take care of us here! They stopped carrying the mexican street corn and the employees will always honor my request for it lol I just have to bring my own Tajin cause I guess they don't have that anymore lol no worries, I'm Mexican and I tend to carry Tajin and Tapatio in my back pocket. I always have the Original Fish Tacos at this location. The service is sometimes slow but other times they can get there in time. I always loved the Original Fish Tacos along side the chips but I sometimes order something else when there's bacon/shrimp and no eggs on it. The reason I have 3 stars is sometimes it's crowded and a bit long waits at times. I always eat it with the Mild Salsa aka "ketchup" in my father and brother's eyes. So upsetting, came here on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't too busy but it was not an empty restaurant. I asked the cashier if she could share with me what was on the loaded nachos she said sure and then an awkward silence...I realized she was looking up the modifications in the point of sales computer...it's a Sunday afternoon should an I knowledgeable employee out there as your face? So let's do this, I must say that I'm extremely disappointed with rubios now. My wife ordered the especial burrito which she said it was ok but that the addition of lettuce in it was not that good. I ordered two steak tacos because in the past, the tacos have always been good and full of meat. Today, my tacos were not as full of meat as before and to top it off, once I received the tacos , I had to return them to get them heated up because they were cold. When they returned my tacos, one side of each taco was warm while the other side was still cold. Since I was hungry I just went ahead and ate them and not even bothered trying to return them, didn't want to get upset so I just let it be. Also, I ordered a kids meal for my beautiful daughter, the burrito was ok but what bothered me a bit more was that her dessert(a churro) was harder than a jolly rancher hard candy.
