Tried this place out several times and have finally decided it's time to share the love with the Yelp world! The atmosphere of this place makes you feel like you're stepping into a really cool aunt's kitchen. The decor is unique and some of it is handmade by Ruth herself! Now for the food! I've tried several different lunch dishes here and have never been let down. My love affair with the Tomato Basil soup is quite intense and a visit to Ruth's wouldn't be the same without a cup of this delicious concoction. If you're a fan of blue cheese, the Missile Sandwich is a must try! I will say I'm a classic girl when it comes to cafe food, so for me the slam dunk meal is the ham and cheese sandwich with the tomato basil soup. Instantly transforms me to sick days from school when my mom used to make me the same meal. The only thing keeping me from the 5 stars is that although the wait staff is on point as far as being efficient, they aren't super friendly/engaging. Ruth's Cafe embodies everything that Yelper's hold dear, local food, eclectic decor, and friendly service. You may be put off by the location, but just remember that all of the best breakfast joints are tucked into strip malls, and Ruth's is no different. That being said, the parking is a bit of a hassle and when there is a line out the door, there is literally a line out the door. Seating is also tight, but turnover seems to be pretty good. In terms of food, the pancakes rank as some of the best that we've had in Indy. They are fluffy and huge. Some inconsistency with texture and crustiness, but they had a decent feel to them overall. In terms of taste, they're sweet, but not overly cloying. They also have a saltiness to them that is quite enjoyable. They have certainly earned a second try. read more

I had the belgian waffles and they were rich with the powder sugar and syrup nearly sending me into a sugar coma. But nevertheless delicous! I have never had a bad experience at Ruth's. The friendly staff, fun decor, and variation of the menu are all enough to make this a solid choice for breakfast or lunch. Their portions are generally huge, which is why I love that you can get a salad for your side at breakfast - it's the perfect way to keep the meal from feeling too heavy. (Their pancakes are ridiculous. I have a pretty big appetite but two people could easily split a shortstack.) My main criteria for judging a lunch soup/salad/sandwich spot is they must have good chicken salad, and Ruth's doesn't disappoint in that department, either. If you go on a weekend, expect to wait, but with a small group, it's never been more than 20 minutes for me. read more

Wasn't pleased with our seating, had crumbs on the seats and was seemed to be sticky syrup on a small section of the table. This is a cute eclectic cafe in the Castleton area, right across from the Fashion Mall. I love all the cute quotes they have on the wall. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. But this is a place where I love the feel of the inside. The food is quite good as well. We had the banana nut coffee cake which left me wondering why I don't make coffee cakes. It was so good and so moist. I would definitely order it again. I ordered the scramble special which was good but a bit to heavy on the potatoes. It only came with one egg on top and I wish I would have ordered another one. The egg got lost in the rest of the ingredients. But all in all it was a good dish. Our server was friendly but we didn't see her very often. She did not come back to check on us or to see if I wanted a refill on my coffee until we were pretty much done with our meal. And it took her about 10 minutes to bring us our check after we requested it (and I had to ask for it more than once) and about the same amount of time to bring us back our processed credit card. From some of the comments I overhead from nearby tables we were not the only ones having issues with the service. We were in the direct area and hungry for breakfast, we first tried to go to Yolk since we were already at another business nxt door and I heard good things about it But the wait time for a table was 40min. I immediately went on to Google search and found Ruth's Cafe really close we drove over there put our names on the waiting list the hostess said it would be 15 min'ish I said no problemo but we were seated at a two top promptly within 7 minutes. I came from Sunday brunch and was seated right away! the patio is just off the hustle and bustle of 82nd street and gives you a quiet slice of peace! Had lunch at Ruth's Cafe a few weeks ago with a friend. The first thing to say is that their hot coffee is very good. We each got soup and split a hot sandwich, the Spinach Melt, as well as a side house salad (came with the sandwich order). The salad was mostly fresh greens, but with some add-ins and an excellent vinaigrette. A generous size, also, so a good item to share. All of the foods were truly delicious. The hot (or, really, warm) sandwich was tasty, with great ingredients. Both of us wished there was more of the sauteed spinach, but that's just being picky. The special soup was a broccoli cheddar. We wondered how much salt had been used (something so many restaurants do -- heavy-handed with salt), so the nice and friendly waitress offered a sample. A bit of salt, yes, but good enough to order. There were the right amounts of cheese and the chopped broccoli, and it seemed truly Made on the Premises, vs other breakfast/lunch spots which just empty and heat big plastic bags of pre-made soups shipped to them by HQ. My friend is a real tomato soup aficionado, and Ruth's version is very good -- I think it was tomato basil. The waitress was attentive without being intrusive, and she was pleasant, kind, and efficient. It all made for a happy lunch. There are only a few things that keep Ruth's Cafe from a 5-star experience. It's not the best value kind of place, although we try to keep in mind that the fact it doesn't have chain restaurant food will cost a customer more. It is worth it, and we only have to comprehend that if you don't watch your ordering, there might be a little sticker shock with the bill. The place is very fun, colorful, with local flair, however, it's a bit crowded, even though we arrived at 11:30 am to avoid having to wait for a table. And -- this isn't the fault of Ruth's Cafe, per se, but the parking lot at that strip mall is just lacking, and getting there a little early didn't help at all. But, we'll go back. The decor was super fun and had a nice outside seating area. However, our food took 30+ minutes to arrive. When it did arrive my husband was happy with his "old school" breakfast but the waffle was overly sweet (almost like a donut with sugar). My omelet was very over cooked on the outside and the cheese was still cold and not melted on the inside. This place used to be one of my top places, however, the customer service has severely went downhill. This place doesn't even deserve 1 star. I recently called to place a pick up order on 12/19. First thing I noticed was that the prices on their website are lower than the prices that were stated over the phone. When I pointed this out, the person on the phone didn't have much to say - they didn't even apologize for having incorrect pricing on their website. I paid for the order over the phone. I go to pick up the order and find a surprise gratuity that was added to my bill without me authorizing it over the phone. There was never any mention of an automatic gratuity being added to my bill when I called to place this order. A good restaurant knows gratuity is earned for great service, not expected as a default! When I asked the girl that worked there why a gratuity was automatically added, she said "it's just something that the owner wanted to add to orders." I told her it would have been helpful for her to have mentioned this over the phone so I knew ahead of time what my card would be charged for. She said nothing and just walked away. To top it off we had burnt potatoes in our order that I discovered when I got the food home. I will NEVER be coming back here. I don't appreciate RUDE service, nor do I appreciate shady practices from a restaurant that sneaks in extra gratuity and also doesn't even make a customer aware that they're charging automatic gratuity. Gratuity is EARNED for great service - this restaurant forces a customer to pay gratuity even if they get bad service from their staff. Either one of two things are happening - either the owner really is shady and teaches their staff to also be shady, or this girl went ahead and added gratuity on her own. You'll see the owner basically just make excuses for other negative reviews, rather than offering to make it right with the customer - that in itself explains why I experienced what I experienced. This owner doesn't truly care and that shows in their actions and their words from other negative reviews. At a time where restaurants are trying to stay open, I would think you would be on your "A" game with customers. I wouldn't feel a bit sorry for your restaurant if you went out of business - you would deserve it. read more

Really enjoyed my breakfast at Ruth's Cafe. Service is great , food was hot and very tasty. I have tried their hot oatmeal and it was good. I do wish they would offer steel cut oats instead as I really like those more. I have also tried their cats chili and oh was that absolutely delicious. There omelette are good as well. I've come to Ruth's for a lot of early-morning "business" meetings. AKA getting together with a friend (that I did work with) and getting breakfast and coffee before going to our day-jobs. The staff is always very welcoming and attentive. Coffee was always fresh, and the decor is super cute and eclectic- you can even buy some of it right off the wall! There's also a huge chalkboard wall that you can write fun messages on, too :) Make sure to check-out the daily specials, including one veg and one meat quiche! Only request would be more veg options, but I understand with a breakfast spot I'll take what I can get! read more

The wait for a table was not bad for a Sunday. However, the 35 min wait for food after ordering was unexpected. I'm told the food is good, but I don't know yet because it's still not here... A few "cons" I'd say is it's ALWAYS packed. Weekdays, weekends, whenever! I also try to avoid eating inside, unless you enjoy smelling like a diner all day, I'd stick to the outside seating. Ruth's is a must visit if you're in the area. We discovered it shortly before moving away and always seem to shift our plans when nearby to stop in! They are open for breakfast and lunch - note they close at 3pm so no late lunches - and they fill up fast at rush hours. The staff is friendly and the interior decor is distractingly fun! The clever signs all around the walls are for sale and the decorated chairs are a great talking piece. The food has always been delicious - no exceptions. The BrieLT and the Missile are personal favorites. I tend to want my sandwiches a little more...wet? Moist? Don't know how else to describe that....point is I ask for a little extra may on the side and I am set. Prices are reasonable and their coffee is delicious. Just go.
