I rarely write reviews but I'm so uncontrollably happy saiguette is finally back that I just want to shout it from the rooftops!! I can't tell if their food got better or if all of the other local Vietnamese spots that I used to fill the large saiguette void in my heart all pandemic long were far more inferior then I originally expected? Probably both but my husband picked up our usual order for the first time in over a year this week -- shrimp summer rolls, chicken papaya salad and 2 steaming bowls of pho, packed to perfection like always. Oh boy was it the best thing I have tasted in a long while. The only other bowl of pho I've had that could top saiguette was in Vietnam! They lied when they mentioned having a juicy boneless chicken thigh sandwich . The sandwich wasn't really juicy and I'm fine with that . What it is,is savory and just flat out amazing ! The chicken reminded me of when I was younger and my uncle would bbq chicken on his charcoal grill offering a bold smokiness . It was cut into the perfect shape and size and distributed evenly on the bread giving you the perfect bite every time . The veggies and the contrasting sauces just added more fun to the mouth party . The bahn chicken sandwich itself is the largest I've had which just makes me love this restaurant more for its value . I thought xe May downtown was the epitome of Bahn sandwiches but there is a new sheriff in town for sure ! This is a very busy restaurant . 100% worth the potentially remote location and the limited seating. I ate the canh chua with fish and shrimp (right side of the photo) and the crispy tofu skin roll. The canh chua was so satisfying--complex and flavorful broth that was herbal and spicy but not heavy at all. The seafood inside was cooked perfectly, and you know it's actually cooked in the broth, not added later, because when it falls apart in your mouth it has all the flavor from the broth. It was exactly what I woke up wanting today, and it really hit the spot. That combination of flavors that leaves you feeling perfectly satisfied. The crispy tofu skin roll was amazing as well. It's filled with pork, shrimp and vegetables, then they cut the roll and fry the pieces. It comes with a tangy, spicy, citrus-y dipping sauce. Also very satisfying. The texture of the fried tofu skin was perfect and crunchy, but the roll is still porous enough that the sauce absorbs when you dip it. It's also a huge portion for only $10... definitely good for sharing as an app. Would have been five stars, but I didn't appreciate that they let this one couple order, leave and then come back to eat. Meanwhile their food was placed at two of the only six seats in the restaurant, and even though they were gone for a good 10-15 minutes the restaurant wouldn't let anyone else sit there. They said, "No, there's already food there." But the people who ordered it were not, and other people could have finished a meal in that time. At such a small space and during a busy lunch time, I think it's inconsiderate to leave and think your spot will be held. Which is why I'm confused why the restaurant enabled it. I ate half my meal standing. Which is fine, and if it's just a busy hour I don't mind. But when there are two unused seats for 10-15 minutes, it feels rude to say I can't sit and eat at either of them. read more

As soon as I touched down in NYC, I immediately headed over to Saiguette (in the ice & snow) around 2pm and ordered lemon grass pork banh mi, roast pork bun bowl (for late night snacking), dumplings, and a bowl of pho for my friend who was coughing. Although there are only 6 chairs at a counter, my lunch buddy and I managed to snag two chairs. With winter coats to manage, it's tight. Surprisingly, the wait for the banh mi seemed to be longer than usual, but I didn't mind because I didn't have to be anywhere. While waiting for the banh mi, the pho was served to-go-style because the majority of the guests take-away and the packaging allows for the pho to stay hot until eaten. Likewise, the dumplings are also served to-go. Finally, the banh mi arrived and it looked as beautiful as it tasted. Apparently, the meat was freshly grilled which is why the wait was longer than usual. In fact, there was so much meat, I could only eat half the sandwich. Thinking I wasn't going to eat my sandwich anytime soon, my lunch buddy ATE my other half of my sandwich. A reason to return. When I had a chance to eat my bun bowl, I decided that lemon grass pork is the way to go. Don't order any other kind of protein. Although you can call ahead and pick-up food at a specific time, my local NYer said that sometimes Saiguette is too busy to pick up the phone. Lemongrass pork sandwich was so bomb. The flavors were on point! (A few pieces of fat slipped through but not enough to effect my rating)

Only take out.This is one of those spots that you don't want too many people to know about. The best Bahn Mi EVER! Seriously overstuffed sandwiches expertly done & I agree with fellow yelper Alison L. a little more of the vegetable salad would be nice but that is not a complaint. I also had the Fried Tofu appetizer. There a bar a couple of doors down and if you are there drinking & ask nicely they may let you eat your order there. read more

tried the chicken thigh banh mi, super flavorful and delish. very hearty and not too moist by any means, a delish collaboration of flavors. also got a thai ice tea and it was super sweet and classic, paired very well with the sandwich. service was efficient and it's a nice shop. will be back im sure. read more

It's too bad I don't live closer because the food, especially in this neck of the woods, was top-notch. I had first heard of Saiguette when my college roommate brought back a banh mi the size of an infant and refused to share even a single bite. I'm happy to see the place is still thriving. Is it as good as some of the more downtown Vietnamese places? I would think so, though I should also note that my standards for Vietnamese food isn't quite so high. Hands-down, my favorite thing to order here is the banh mi with either the lemongrass-grilled pork shoulder or the flank steak. Half of a sandwich should be more than enough to tide the average appetite to dinner. My first time here, I completely underestimated the sizes and ended up buying both a sandwich and an appetizer. The entire thing will induce a food coma of epic proportions. My one nit with the sandwich is that they add the meat in thick slabs so when you think you've gotten yourself a neat bite, you actually end up dragging the whole piece out, which throws the cucumber and carrots in total disarray. Also tried: 1) The Laksa with shrimp. They'll give you a whole plastic bag of sprouts and herbs to add to the soup. I don't recommend eating this on a sweltering August day but this was delicious enough to warrant a repeat visit. 2) Pho nam vang. I really liked the seafood mixture of squid, shrimp, and fish cakes - it's a common combination in Asian cuisine and reminded me of the homemade soup my mom used to make. 3) Sticky rice banana pouch. Really delicious if you're not into sugary sweet desserts and substantial enough to split between 2-3 people. Also tried a little of the taro and peanut mochi. 4) Taro peanut and garlic chive moon dumplings. This is what I had hoped Mimi Cheng's to be instead of the overly Americanized chicken version I got there. Flavors paired well together. Not much room to sit and eat so I would take any goodies over to a nearby park. read more

I am not going to lie to you. Although, I wish I could lie so that this place would be my little secret to outsiders. But looking at 100+ reviews nixes that idea. Four stars because the eating area is tiny and there is no bathroom. But it can get five stars for cleanliness, quality/cost of product and customer service. My first time: I walked in, ordered with the smiling cashier and sat in the little eat-in section. She brought over my refreshing ginger iced tea once ready and then the roast pork shoulder sandwich. The bread was warm and lightly toasted to bring out the layers and brighten my day (I would do well to date a baker someday). The jalapeño was freshly crisp and snuggled in so tightly I barely noticed it was there. What a right and tight little package of veggies!!! But, that pork? Let me just lay it all out on the table right now: I would marry that pork! When I finished the first half, I looked over at my untouched remnants and decided I could not be a quitter despite being full. I took one bite and had to admit defeat and cursed having had a late breakfast that day. I asked for a to-go container and greedily wrapped the remains which would be enjoyed later on with some wine. I miss that sandwich. I really do. So I went and got another two days after. I'm not the kind of girl to kiss and tell so I won't tell you how many times I've gone back (for another sandwich or dumplings or pho) because that's besides the point. On a cold, blistery day like today...I'd give up a kidney to have this place deliver some Pho to my house. In Buffalo. It's not going to happen, I know :( -- but one can dream, right? This is another NYC hole-in-the-wall, the type that induces envy that we don't have one of these in my hometown. There's only seating for about 2-4 people here and they don't serve any of the pho in real dishes - just take out containers. The broth, however, is insanely rich. Newspaper cut outs on the wall allude that they cook the bones in the soup for days. I doubt they actually do that, but however they make it (hopefully sans MSG), it is mouthwatering, hearty and full of delightful flavor. I had the raw beef pho with the tendons and associated beef goodness and I slurped up every last drop like a madman. My fiance had the 'seafood pho' for the 2nd time (she discovered this place on her last trip to NYC and had to take me here) and I got to try a taste and was floored as well. Delightful. How did I not know about this place sooner?? The banh mi's here are on point and arguably the best I've had in Manhattan. I've been obsessed with the roasted pork shoulder sandwich, which is filled with a generous portion of meat + veggies and packed with flavor. I'm generally full by the time I eat half of a sandwich, but still manage to finish the rest because I just can't resist.. It's really that good, trust me. I've also tried their pork dumplings, which I'm not too crazy about. The dumplings themselves are pretty bland, even with the dipping sauce they include. I plan to try their pho when I finally grow tired of their banh mi's, which will definitely not be anytime soon. $10 minimum for credit card. Limited seating. Fast service. Saiguette has pretty good sandwiches. It's a decent spot for Vietnamese dishes (but not for pho in my opinion) in this neighborhood, albeit a little expensive. There are a couple of seats, but it is really more of a takeout spot. In fact, everyone working here seems to spend a majority of their time filling delivery orders. Pho with raw beef, brisket, tripe & tendon ($11.50) - thin rice noodle, beef broth, onion, lime, bean sprout, basil, jalapeno, hoisin, sriracha: The broth had good flavor. The rest of it wasn't great. I wouldn't order pho here again. The ingredients come pre-packaged in a plastic bowl. The broth comes piping hot from a plastic container. I wasn't happy to pour the steaming hot broth from one plastic container to another. After pouring, I had to wait a few minutes while stirring everything together for two reasons - 1) to wait for the broth to cool a little, 2) to get the noodles and other ingredients to separate because they were all stuck together. The tendons and tripe were also a little tough. The price is rather high, especially for something that resembled instant noodles in plastic containers. Laksa with chicken ($4.50 for small size) - curry & coconut milk soup with rice vermicelli, bean sprouts, basil, lime: It's not the best laksa, but it is a much better option for noodle soup here than their pho. The coconut curry soup had very good flavor. I'm not used to the clear vermicelli noodles in my laksa, but it was pretty good too. It's great that it comes in a small size in case you can't decide whether you want soup or a sandwich. They've got a good selection of very filling and tasty banh mi. All come with the usual ingredients - cucumbers, pickled carrots, pickled jalapenos, spicy chili mayo on homemade bread. I've tried the... Classic Pate & Pork Terrine Banh Mi ($8) - delicious sandwich that includes pork and some Vietnamese ham. Grilled Lemongrass Pork Shoulder ($9) - good flavored pork, couldn't really taste the lemongrass, but I could definitely smell its fragrance. Grilled Flank Steak Sandwich ($11) & Grilled Skirt Steak ($11): Both steak sandwiches are great. I can't really taste or see the difference between the two though. As much as I enjoy their banh mi, they are on the expensive side. Good thing the sandwiches are very large and filling. Sticky Rice Banana Pouch ($7.50 for 2) - sticky rice, black beans, jack fruit, banana, coconut milk wrapped in banana leaf: Mr. Joy said these would be good to try. They're quite good indeed. Sweet, but not too sweet. The jack fruit is the best part. However, it's pretty expensive for sticky rice. I would definitely order their banh mi again and possibly other items on their menu, just not the pho. read more

I came here for the classic banh mi. The pictures looked great on Yelp so I, of course, wanted to give it a try. The banh mi was decent enough. It isn't the best I've had, but it was solid. The pork tasted like it had some kind of sweet sauce on it almost like teriyaki, and tasted as if it was made for more of a Western palate than many classic banh mi. It's not to say it was bad, just not what I was expecting. There was a lot of talk about how big the banh mis were but I found the portion size to be normal. It was still a good sandwich, though. I also ordered the trio of moon dumplings. I got spinach, pork and shrimp, and taro with peanut. The taro with peanut was an interesting combination of flavors and I don't quite know what to make of it, but I'd order the other two again. The atmosphere was very casual and most people took out and brought their food back home. They do have some seating though. On the walls there were a lot of articles praising the pho. I'd come back to try the pho and see how it lives up to the hype. read more

I get addicted to Vietnamese food, because I love the savory/sweet/spicy combo with a refreshing twist of lime. It's not heavy, flavorful, and satisfying to my palate. Saiguette delivered that yesterday on my first visit. I am usually torn between the bun and the banh mi. I got the pork shoulder bun and it was deeelicious. A super healthy serving of meat, and a good portion of noodles, and all that flavor. However, I was disappointed by their use of iceberg lettuce. I expected better veggies, and more authentic ones. Service was friendly and efficient. I ate in and the food was brought to me at the seating area. If I had seen photos of the banh mi (which were more expensive than I expected at $10+ a pop), I would have gotten one, because they look yummy. I think you pay for what you get here, but also it's a Manhattan location that's not the west village in terms of traffic, so you're paying $1-2 more than what you'd get downtown, but I still think your portions and quality are much better. This is pretty much a take out place, really not much room to sit and eat comfortably, I guess you could if there were only a few people there. I ordered via telephone, and it was ready in 15 minutes, and they accept cards. There's not much parking though. To be fair, I should have had the food piping hot but I had it over an hour later. I got the skirt steak sandwich which was packed with meat and veggies, size matters :) and secondly there were plenty of sauces to add but none were needed. The $10 sandwich was delicious and worth every penny and bite! Even though it was cold. No complaints! I also got the beef pho $8, it has a good amount of meat, noodles, and fresh garnishes, lime, mint leaves, bean sprouts, the broth is mild but good. It left me satiated. This place is a gem! This place is takeout only but man do they deliver! The roast pork and the lemongrass pork are both amazing! I love the thinness of the pork and they grill it to perfection. I also really enjoy the cha gio (meat crispy spring rolls)... I'm a creature of habit and I always get the same thing so I can't speak for the other items on the menu but I can say that Saiguette never disappoints. The only suggestion is would make is to include some lettuce, mint and cilantro to wrap the rolls with but for the price... you can't have it all!! I ordered at 4:45 pm and got my order at 5:05. How!? I was not ready. Classic Banh Mi (Pate and Pork Terrine) $9.95: Solid. So-so bread, regular meats, subtle bits of veggies. Lacking a bit of crisp to the bread and not enough flavor to warrant 5 stars, but I'm happy with it. The veggie curry was also satisfying and ho-hum. $12.50 with a rice choice (I went with Sticky).
