Saluhall is a brand-new, two-story food hall attached to IKEA in downtown San Francisco, and this is clear proof that this area of the city is still alive! The food offerings here were high-quality and gourmet, with a focus on plant-based options (though not exclusively). One alum from La Cocina (a local food business incubator) represented here was Kayma, an Algerian eatery, where I tried the Mezza Oasis salad, a plate of dressed greens, a purée of fire-roasted eggplant, a sweet-spicy relish of chopped eggplant/bell pepper/jalapeño, black olives, chickpeas, and whole wheat flatbread. We also added chicken, made from boneless chunks stewed in spices, and everything on the plate was flavorful and delicious. On the ground floor, Smörgasland was a Scandinavian bakery offering flatbreads, open-faced sandwiches, and pastries. The Potato Flatbreads were baked-to-order flatbreads with a choice of toppings, and I tried the Eggplant & Confit Shallot, which came with eggplant purée, shallots, black olives, dates, and melted harvati cheese, all finished with fresh herbs. This unique combination had a balance of sweet, salty, umami, and vegetal flavors, but the best part was simply the perfectly chewy, slightly sour flatbread dough! We also got the Crab Louie Open Faced Rye Sandwich, a slice of seeded rye bread topped with Dungeness crab, cabbage, asparagus, a half soft-boiled egg, and thousand island dressing. The sandwich was decent (and a creative fusion of Californian and Scandinavian ingredients) but had way less crab than I expected for the price. A final highlight of Saluhall was Snöberg, which offered vegan oat milk soft serve ice cream. They offered just one size in a cup or cone, which came with unlimited free toppings. After trying some generous samples, I got a cup of Vanilla, which was perfectly creamy and sweet with a distinct oat milk flavor. We topped it off with chocolate cookie crumbles, granulated hazelnuts, and slivered almonds, along with a sugar cone on top. I'm really happy Saluhall is open. Mid-Market is in desperate need of a rival and I hope this food hall helps. Also, this fills the huge absence that La Cocina left when they closed their food hall way ahead of schedule. What I wish Saluhall had that La Cocina had was the option to order from different stalls online. But perhaps that doesn't fit with the way Saluhall contracts their space or perhaps there's other complications. It's a first-world problem for sure. As for the space - very minimalistic as you would expect from an IKEA brand. It's a bit industrial, a bit corporate, but very spacious and clean. What I'm not used to is having my dishes bussed in a place like this. I was expecting a place to throw trash and place dirty dishes, but there are employees that go around to do that. Much appreciated - it helps keep the place spotless. And frankly, people still don't know how to separate their trash so best to leave it with someone who does know. There are two floors and most of the restaurants are upstairs. It's all plant-based, though I think Curry Up Now may have real meat. Their menu says chicken and vegetarian as options. With the two-floor plan comes many, many places to sit. There's bar seating for those who are there to eat and go, and tables for larger groups. Some are set up near outlets and I have seen people take advantage of them for a working lunch with coworkers. Though it can get pretty noisy as more people come in, so it may not be the best place to host a lunch meeting. The music is pretty good, too. Last time I was there they had a pretty good 80s mix. The stairs to get to the second floor are windy and a bit narrow, especially if you're carrying food to either floor. I need to ask where the elevator is because it's not clearly marked for me. Meh and underwhelming. I've been eager to check out Saluhall since food halls have been all the latest rage. I've seen a lot of social media publicizing Saluhall and honestly in person, it seems way smaller and all the food options have a bias in favor of vegetarians and vegans. I found it hard to find a meal with adequate amounts of animal protein. A few of the food stalls don't even acknowledge your existence because ordering is done through a kiosk so it feels very impersonal -- I mean you can clearly see me as a potential customer standing there looking at your menu so the least you can do is have common courtesy to greet me. We came on a Saturday and since we didn't want to deal with the ridiculous parking and expensive lots, we took muni which was totally convenient. Downtown is definitely not what I remember from 10 years ago. Saluhall makes an attempt to provide a casual and cozy environment for everyone to grab a bite. There are two floors of eateries along with a kitchen where they host cooking classes and private rooms that can be booked out for events. It's a good place to chill and hang out; the drinks selection (beer, wine, cocktails, and non-alcoholic options) seemed pretty decent as well. I went here on opening day. Everyone was friendly and helpful. The place is clean and has lots of seating. There are two floors, with stairs, an elevator, and an escalator connecting them. It's also connected to Ikea. They had good music playing and it wasn't too loud. When I was done eating, someone cleared my tray for me. On the opening weekend, they have free photo booths and free cooking classes. I had dinner at Curry Up Now, and it was excellent. Dessert at Snoberg was also great. I'll review each individually. Generally speaking, Saluhall is a cool concept and space. I'd want to just get food from the IKEA kiosk next time. During my first visit, I tried one of the food vendors and it was fine but pricey. If you don't work in tech, this cafeteria is what the really nice Silicon Valley tech cafes feel like... but for the general public. It may be both a blessing and a curse. There is drip coffee on the main ground floor, but I hope that they expand and develop their espresso and coffee selection! We happened to be in the city and decided to check out this food court. It's located on Market St, right next to Ikea SF. Love the decors and the space here. The vendors serve up pastries, curries, noodles, burgers, soft serve, and the list goes on. It's cool to see that most of the vendors have plant based options. Real meat is available for some of them too. We really enjoyed the farm egg danish from Smörgasland, and we thought the noodles from Momo Noodle were pretty solid too. Saluhall is a really fun food hall from IKEA in Sf. It's in the tenderloin so parking in the parking garage ($20) or ubering is easiest. There's a lot of wonderful options. I ended up getting the spicy chicken noodle at Momo Noodle. The price was steep, but the noodles were so good and so spicy! The ice cream was fun to look at but honestly it did not taste good. I asked for a waffle cone and was given a sugar cone. I also was told chocolate was out. The employee seemed stressed out, and there were two managers who worked there staring at her intensely with their arms crossed while talking about her and making her and everyone so uncomfortable. I felt really bad for her and I think their weird micromanaging, uncomfortable presence is why she kept making mistakes. There's a lot of employees walking around and cleaning things up regularly so tables clear up fast. Whisper of Outline of Ghost of Criticism #1: Why are there so many stairs? I understand that an upstairs-and-downstairs design requires stairs, but this many? Why didn't they pre-design the stairs better? My lazy self is more likely to walk to IKEA and take its escalators than to deal with these stairs. Whisper of Outline of Ghost of Criticism #2: Why is it so dark back in the corner? Why is it so dark overall, actually? The entire space is lovely, but it's not well lit. I guess they could have gone the opposite way and made it way too bright, but we can have nice things in San Francisco, I promise; we just need to speak our minds more and look strangely at the weirdos whose weirdo ideas get taken way too seriously by way too many people. Whisper of Outline of Ghost of Criticism #3: What's with only being to get water at the bars? As in, why aren't there self-serve water stations, and more than one of them on each floor? That's all I've got for whispers of outlines of ghosts of criticisms. The place is gorgeous. And there's plenty of room for your large group, you by your lonesome, your non-romantic date, your roommate-being-a-third-wheel date, and everything in between. This place should be a bigger deal in San Francisco, and maybe it is. I'm just not a member of any online "community" other than Yelp, so I don't know what's popular and what isn't popular anymore. It feels good being a full-grown adult, although I might trade some of the aches and pains for stupid, short-sighted decisions. Who knows? Went in on Friday around 7 as I was going to the Warfield. The place was almost completely empty. I wanted a cocktail, a slice of pizza (so so good this review is not about the food), and some dessert. I was only able to get pizza. It looks like only four vendors remain? The cleaner people were extremely rude. There were no napkins or water available anywhere. They were playing horrible elevator music from the mid 90's and just about everyone there seemed aggressively unhappy. This place used to have at least some soul and warmth to it, and there was hope that it would last. That's all gone now. Sad. read more
