Looking for a great place to eat across from the Schubert Theater- this is the place. We decided to stop by for lunch before our matinee and were seated immediately. Service was a bit slow but if you're not in a rush it was good. There are caricatures of famous people lining the walls. They range from actors to politicians which make for interesting conversation. We spotted most of the New York State Governors on the wall. The food was delicious. I ordered the glazed salmon with sweet potato puree and for dessert the tiramisu torte was nice. Right in the midst of broadway chaos. Very expensive! Food IS good. But not for that much money. I was stunned abt the drinks menu to be honest. $15 for a glass of Riesling. I don't think the bottle costs that much. And to top it off it's not the standard wine glass size either. It was kids first time at a nice restaurant so we did enjoy ourselves. Lots of celebrity sightings in the past apparently. We asked our waiter to take a pic of us and he said the corner near us is where Al Pacino sits every time he comes. They don't seat anyone else near him to give him privacy. Place is designed with caricatures of famous people. Service is great. You definitely need to make reservations. The ambiance is really cool. You feel like you are in a historic restaurant. The food was good and the portion was generous. Where Sardi's really shined was the service. They were always checking in to see if I needed anything. First question was if I was trying to get to a show and if I was in a time crunch. Same as it ever was. The place for pre theater cocktails and world famous onion soup. Where the server says "enjoy". We came before a show. The handsome, friendly bartender made an excellent martini, the soup was delicious. If you are from NYC, you have certainly been here. If you are visiting, this classic is a must do. True to NYC, I always feel like thie staff is looking down at me, probably because the first time I was here I was a 16 year old from Missouri, thrilled to be served a daiquiri. And I am sure they were snickering at us kids playing "New Yorker". So of course 5 stars. PS they still have a bathroom attendant! Disappointing! Used to come here years ago specifically for the crab cakes. Today, 90% filler. It was actually like stuffing. Two recommendations don't order them as a customer and for the chef take them off the menu. We shared the cheese tray which we enjoyed with the toasted bread. The cream of asparagus soup was also very good. The Caesar salad was very good with the blacken shrimp. While the spaghetti bolognese was okay it would have been better with a little more sauce. We were with a group of 15? We chose Sardi's over Jr.s and we're clearly disappointed. After being seated we waited longer than expected for a server. We won't be back. If you're dining here, you know why -- it's a NYC icon. And with that comes a hefty price tag. So, as long as you make your peace with that before you enter, then everything else will be fine. The service is incredible, everyone dressed to the nines and ready to make sure your water glass is always full and you have everything you need; the drinks are strong and delicious, which is nice if you're going before the theater (enjoying a more civilized cocktail rather than drinking out of a sip cup later); and the food is classic. I had the Cobb salad and while it wasn't the best I ever had in my life, it was still delicious and perfectly presented. Went as a reward for a long few days of work. Was an easy walk from the Marriott Marquis Times Square. Loved the place - perfect ambiance and awesome caricatures of Broadway famous and not-so-famous that lined the wall. Was fun trying to pick people out while we dined. Food was delicious. I had the Onion Soup au Gratin to start and it was divine. Main course was Spinach Cannelloni au Gratin. Cooked to perfection! And as I almost always do, I got the Cheesecake. Yum! Conveniently located for my date with Corey Stoll next to the Hayes Theatre. First time at Sardis, we hit the upstairs bar with some friends Michael and Loften who are old pro's at this. Big strong Martinis made by experienced and solid bartenders who can do this blindfolded. A caprese and a shrimp cocktail with the Martini tided us over through the play next door. I hate leaving bad reviews, but this restaurant is a landmark and I'm very upset by our experience there. My husband and I are visiting NYC for the first time in many years. I had last dined at Sardi's in the 1990s. I used to love it! I'm a big fan of theater and classic film, so Sardi's was high on my list for this visit. We were there from 7 to 9 PM on Friday night. The place was almost empty the entire time, which should have been a red flag when we walked in. It used to be packed all the time years ago. Only three other tables were occupied while we were there, and now I know why. I will say that the service was excellent, we loved the staff that we met. I had a glass of wine and my husband had a beer. My husband was a professional chef for decades, and I have worked in many restaurants as a server and hostess too. We noticed that the menu was all very outdated, 1970s type dishes (menu was not what is listed on Open Table). The waitress told us the specials, including soups of the day. She was very nice. Then the bread service came, if you can call it that, which consisted of a man coming over and giving us each two small slices of toasted yet ice cold crusty bread on our side plates, using tongs from a basket that he carried around. It was so tough, I couldn't chew the crust. It was a cold winter night, so I ordered the lobster bisque and my husband had the chicken and rice soup to start. My husband's soup was completely cold. My bisque was hot, but tasted more like tomato soup than lobster. There was NO lobster meat in it, but a hint of lobster stock flavor. For dinner, I ordered the shrimp in lemon cream sauce with jasmine rice. My husband ordered a cheeseburger with fries. My shrimp was so tough and overcooked that I could barely chew it. The sauce was tasty, but broken and gritty. The "vegetable" was just some diced tomatoes in the sauce, and the dish was topped with a ton of chopped basil (too much). I made my husband taste a shrimp and he said they seemed to be reheating pre-cooked shrimp that you'd normally serve as cold shrimp cocktail (which was also on the menu), and reheating a pre-made sauce. Lemon cream sauce is ruined when it's reheated too much. My husband said his burger was also terrible, and clearly a frozen patty. The burger bun was too chewy, so he didn't eat it. He ate the patty with a fork. The French fries were the best thing we received all night. All of this cost over $160 - two drinks, two cups of soup, and two entrees. No dessert or coffee. I'm INCREDIBLY sad to see that the current management is destroying an American icon that has been open for over a century. Mr. Sardi is probably rolling in his grave. The history of this place, and the wonderful caricatures, deserve better and should be preserved. This was probably the worst meal I have ever had in a restaurant. Very sad. I hope the owners will fix it! read more

After waiting 45 minutes for our order and not seeing the waitress since she took our order, i asked someone to get her. I asked why it was so slow. She basically lied. I don't remember the name of the dish I had but it was good. It was like an enchilada floating in cheese. Our waiter didn't want to recommend anything but cautioned that some dishes don't come out as expected. We were told to google them to hopefully find photos online. The caricature drawings on the wall were fun to look at but the decor is a bit old. The formal atmosphere is a bit overkill. Nothing about the menu is incredibly gourmet so why the fancy decor a waitstaff attire? I didn't need the attendant in the bathroom either staring at every move I made. The highlight of our recent trip to New York was our dinner at Sardi's! It would have been enough to just peek in at the famous historical gathering place for stars and celebrities but the service and the food exceeded my expectations! White table linens, staff in neat red jackets - yet the mood was relaxed and casual- no need to dress up unless you felt like it. We got there just as the crowds headed to the theater left and we were able to take a good look at all the caricatures of stars lining the dining room. So exciting! Even our server, Kyle seemed excited to be working in this landmark restaurant. Great find with no wait across the street from Broadway theater. The food was excellent - we started with the spinach and meat cannelloni. I had the lentil stew with roasted Brussels and polenta and my boyfriend had the bolognese lasagna as our entrees. Both would be graded with an A if this were cooking class. But Yelpers are able to sift through the cobwebs and glitter to deliver useful information. Sardi's, decades old, still delivers. The atmosphere, to my eyes, is right out of a Bogie and Bacall romance. Old School Cool. The service is how Manhattan staff used to look and behave. Again Old School but now classy. My media group meets here every month so the food is served buffet style. Despite that, it's well prepared, full of taste (not Always true for some old timers) served hot and fresh. I love the deserts too - NY classic cheese cake and yummy rice pudding make me smile. The barkeep is also right from central casting. Quick, always with a generous pour and a master at favorites like Bloody Mary and martini. He's a pro and I tip appropriately (as all Yelpers should). This is a classic eatery, steeped in history, that still brings it's A Game. I go every month for the media group meeting and always look forward to getting the whole Sardi's experience. read more

Sardi's is an old-time restaurant with a deep history on Broadway. The food's average the experience is priceless when I've recently taken friends there I go directly upstairs and try to get a seat at the bar for a couple drinks and nobody's gonna mind if you're looking at the celebrity sketches that fill the walls on unless someone's eating over one. Service is top-of-the-line and the food is not bad. It's just not above average so if you wanna eat there have lower expectations of the food and maybe it'll exceed your expectations. If you wanna put this on your list of things to do on Broadway make reservations if not, what I do is I walk directly upstairs to the bar because you can always order at the bar. No doubt there's gonna come a time where you're gonna go to Sardis if you go to Broadway if not, the curiosity will kill you, so go and know that many years ago celebrities sat around, waiting for the New York Times to see if the show was a hit and read the reviews. read more
