The service tonight was horrible. It took thirty minutes (at least) to get our meal. Then I had to ask for ginger and wasabi!! At a Japanese restaurant...oh come on now folks! Then had to ask for more water too! Servers don't look happy to be working there at all. Don't share attitude with customers--just don't come to work!! We have given this place more than one chance! Luckily the closest sushi to home is pretty good. I'd give this the fifth star if the sashimi was always great quality. It usually is, but sometimes it only ranks as "not bad." They have a great variety of rolls (a favorite with a male friend is the Victoria's Secret because it's so smooth & sensual). And my favorite part of this place is the Mirugai! It's my favorite type of sushi, it's not easy to find & they nearly always have it. The sushi always looks nice too (sushi is not just about the fish after all, a good place also makes it look interesting too). I have only been here for dinner & never had a problem with service. Had a quick lunch here after some food shopping. I always wanted to try this place since I'm always looking for some real good sushi I thought I swing in. I must have hit the local lunch crowd this place was jumping but that's a good thing! sat at the sushi bar, the fish looked real fresh. Staffs on the spot ready for water requests and menus. Ordered a salad & miso soup which was real good, not to much just the right portion for a lunch. Tried the tuna, hamichi and spicy tuna roll, nigiri sushi. All were real good and fresh, when you eat sushi the fish should not taste like fish here it did not, no after effects and should have a clean finish. That's a plus for me. The sushi chef was real nice, he asked me about my food twice. I will be back here for dinner with my family I'm sure they will like it as well. I say check them out! read more

I've lived near this place for a long time, but never bothered going in. That finally changed one Sunday evening recently. I was craving Japanese and decided I'd try takeout from Satsuma. Everything was surprisingly tasty and fresh. I ordered a bento box which ended up to be about $20. The miso soup was okay, nothing special - I had to wonder if it was a pre-made mix like Kikoman. Their salad dressing was very good, better than I've had at most Japanese places. The tempura was cooked perfectly. The California rolls were a bit small in diameter, but you could tell they were freshly made. The star of the meal was the maguro sashimi. It was the freshest, most delicate, wonderful maguro I've had in a long time. It was melt in your mouth good. The only things that kept me from giving this place a 5 were: 1) the telephone service when I called in my order. I said I wanted to make an order to go, and the woman said "okay" then just set the phone down, and came back about 30 seconds later. I gave my order to her, then she took down my phone number and hung up without telling me how long it would be. And 2) When I got there, instead of having a waiting area for takeout orders, they shuffle you all the way to the back of the restaurant. There isn't anywhere to sit so if your order is not finished or there is no one to ring up your payment, you just stand around awkwardly until you can escape. Fabulous rolls! Totally reliable yummy good quality fresh fish sushi. This is one of my favorite joints to frequent. Sunday, they have an all you can eat sushi dinner. It's getting more popular these days, so I guess word is getting out. If you like to drink sake and make a night out of it, it can get pretty dern expensive. Decided to dine here on a Friday...didn't think to make a reservation. Who would have thought they'd be booked solid! At first I figured we were out of luck, but soon they had mercy and sat us. We actually only waited about 20 minutes for a table...I've had to wait longer at Denny's! The reviews I had read mostly agreed the food was good - well, I'm with you! In fact, not only was the food good, the service was also really good (and super fast too!). We had 5 rolls and each one was better than the last. I suggest you try the El Camino Roll ; ) Definitely going back! P.S. Had dinner at satsuma after work with the wife and it was quite a pleasant experience. The restaurant was lively. It seemed like alot of people went there after work as well like we did. We kind of starved ourselves to try a variety of rolls. I think we tried about 4 rolls and a few nigiris. At the end, my favorite was their hamachi!! loving the freshness of it and the generous amount of pieces on the rice. At Japanese restaurants i usually go for that long brown bottle sake named "kurosawa?" (I think that's the name) since I love the smell and taste and it fits perfectly into my budget. but since the wife was my designated driver that night I went all out and bought a bottle of "otokoyama". now officially my favorite sake. can't go wrong with it when you're eating sushi. hope this helps. just wanted to share my thoughts. definitely worth introducting this place to your friends read more

I've been here several times and finally got around to writing a review. Just a solid sushi spot located in a very convenient location in Mountain View/Sunnyvale. Parking is never difficult and the wait is never too long. The sushi rolls here are almost always good and innovative. I must've had 10-15 different rolls since I've been here and more than half of them are selections that are unique to this location only. I appreciate Satsuma's willingness to break out of the norm and it works! Special rolls plus sushi restaurant staples...what more can you ask for? Oh...great service! Nice and friendly staff here at Satsuma. The waitresses and owners are constantly checking in with you to see if everything's going well but they won't bother you too much once the food is out, which I greatly appreciate. This is an incredible sushi restaurant! You wouldn't think so given that it is between a BR ice cream and a haircup shop, but the sushi is delicious. I've been coming to Satsuma for over nine years and they keep getting better. It used to be a dingy place, but their food has always been great and they've taken the profits and poured them back into the restuarant. The bar was completely remade, the lighting is all new, and the tables are much nicer. My favorite thing to do is sit at the sushi bar and chat with the chefs while they make fantastic food. They have many creative rolls, and you can try them if you like. I love the sashimi; it's fresh and plentiful. Order suzuki sashimi -- it's not on the menu but they always have it and it's very tasty. Just speak up and the service is very good. the table service is a bit slow, it's true. read more

I just recently moved to the area and stopped by Satsuma Sushi on Sunday night about 1 hour before closing time. Not sure what was worst - the Service or the Sushi. The waitress made it her point to make us feel that we need to order fast, eat, pay and leave because they are closing soon... I literally told her that we ARE leaving after she stopped by the table again. This is my favorite sushi restaurant in Mountain View - my husband and I go pretty regularly. The prices are quite reasonable and everything is always good quality. We've never been disappointed; even when trying new rolls that I found were a little out of my wheelhouse, I still could appreciate that they were tasty and well-made...just maybe not the right roll for me! That's the hallmark of a great restaurant for me: when a dish that isn't going to be my new favorite is still delicious and doesn't leave me wishing I'd gotten "the usual." I recommend this place. Great service and food! I especially recommend the El Camino and GTO rolls...I have a soft spot for their eel! read more

We were on our way to a doctors visit but got hungry on the way. We saw this restaurant and decided to check it out. Prices are no different from other Japanese restaurants but, you can't beat the taste. The food her is very tasty however, it was only the luncheon menu. They concentrate on a short style menu so to concentrate on keeping the food great. There dinner menu is somewhat the same. I would recommend to anyone who loves Japanese food in the Mountain View area or just passing. Y like we did. We will be keeping this restaurant on our list of travels so we can remember to come here again with figuring out what or where we would go if we got hungry. read more

Quick tip: The restaurant gets packed around noon ish. My friends from work had brought me sushi from here and it was delish!! I think its called the bay area roll, I forgot the name but its a California roll with baked scallop, spicy sauce and the fish roes (anyways I think it would of been better without the fish roes) Came here today with Connie and Shawn and we had ordered. Udon soup, sashimi bento box and a yakiniku donburi. They had brought us pickled bean sprouts which was delicious! The miso soup was it bit bland. The Yakiniku don was delicious!! "Wait, did I just eat the garnish?" Went on a Sunday night and this place was *packed*. At 6pm we sat in the last two available seats. I'm no expert at Japenese food, unfortunately, and my fatty American upbringing left me void of Japenese sushi restaurant protocol: What do I do with soup when I'm not given a spoon? (Slurp, I guess.) What are these pickled sprout things in a tiny dish? Is it normal for the wait staff to only appear three times -- once to greet you, once to take the order and once with the bill? What if I wanted another roll? What we got was delicious -- shrimp tempora crunch roll, avacado roll, miso soup, grilled octopus ("Chomp that tentacle! Yeah!"), and, uh, those pickled sprouts which I *guess* you're supposed to eat. I hope I didn't eat some kind of hand-cleaning item or garnish. No idea, really. Definitely coming back with friends, definitely sitting at the bar, and definitely asking the chef to serve me whatever he sees fit. Can't wait. read more

I have eaten here twice. Once for lunch and once for dinner. The place is alright for lunch. Got the Tonkatsu and it was good. Of course it would be really hard to mess up that particular meal, in my opinion. Dinner was on a Sunday night and it was a freakin zoo! Luckily we got there prior to the herd of people that came in 10 mins after us. I ordered the Ebi crunch roll, spider roll, and hamachi nigiri. Yes. I like to eat a lot! The crunch roll was good, but I am not particularly fond of the sweet sauce (ponzu?) that was smothered on top of the roll. It just drowns out the flavors. The spider roll was kinda mushy and the hamachi slice was huge, but as they say. Bigger isn't always better. Right ladies?. The service was alright. Lot's of waitresses, but they didnt come by and fill up our waters. It's strange, but most Japanese restaurants around here don't seem to be very big on refilling. Maybe it's just me? Okay! I must be really busy these days because I thought I'd written a review on this place. Since my son introduced me to it last summer, I've been back at least four times. I've had some of the best sushi imaginable (Sushi Ota in San Diego) and ordered by folks who "know!" sushi, but with the exception of the above-mentioned, I just don't tend to "crave" sushi like I do Thai and some other global offerings. Well, that is until I ate at Satsuma Sushi. Now I get irresistable cravings for their tempura...so light and unspoiled by the heavy greasiness that so many tempuras serve(or is that suffer ) up. Recently I met a long-time friend and colleague for lunch and when I suggested Satsuma Sushi, I got a resounding; "I LOVE that place!!" When we met, she ordered a Bento box and since I hadn't tried one there yet, I went for it and was very pleased (teriyaki chicken). I confess my tastes are still a bit elementary here (I confess to loving California roll), but my son lives just a few blocks away, eats here three to four times a week and is introducing me to some of the more exotic offerings. If I lived close I suspect I'd be tempted to follow his lead. The food is wonderful, the people friendly and the dining is pure pleasure! Oh, shoot! Let me start off by saying - I don't eat seafood. So that limits my ability to choose a lot off the menu. However, that hasn't bothered me here. I've gone through pretty much all of their vegetarian rolls; the plum roll was sour and nasty to me. Other than that, I've loved them all. I think my favorite is their tempura roll. The tempura (not in a roll) is really tasty as well. I haven't had their Udon yet, but that's on my list to try. The Korean bean sprout starter dish they put out is utterly delicious. The green tea mochi ice cream is also very good. The service is decent. They're always bustling, so you might need to flag them down to get something done immediately. read more

From miso soup, gyoza appetizer, tempura shrimp/vegetables, sushi, teriyaki dishes, and desserts, we never leave disappointed. Our favorite sushi is their Ebi Crunch roll. (shrimp tempura, avacado topped w/spicy tuna, flying fish roe, and spicy eel sauce) i thought the spicy eel sauce was too much, it masked the flavor of the spicy tuna. their spicy tuna is good tho. the volcanoe was...interesting. i think it's on their new and/or special menu. (deep fried jalapeno, cream cheese, spicy tuna, cucmber and avacado, and was topped with tuna and unagi with unagi sauce, spicy mayo, crunch, and tobiko) It was a little bit too much for me. the flavors work well together, but because there's so many of them i didn't really taste anything in particular. Spicy tuna here is goood. i like how they put cucumbers in their spicy tuna roll. this wasn't the case in other sushi restaurants i've been to. it's got a little kick to it! i thought it was seasoned really well. I'd definitely order this again. VICTORIA SECRET. YO. this roll was GOOOOD. (shrimp tempura and avacado topped with salmon and dynamite sauce, BAKED, then topped with roe and eel sauce) at first i thought the sauce was going to overpower the taste of the roll, but it didn't at all- actually, satsuma's "spicy eel sauce" isn't too sweet or overpowering like other sushi places i've been to. a definite plus. anyways. VICTORIA SECRET. the baked salmon was friggen delicious. the baked salmon sort of melts in your mouth, and the warm sauce compliments it soooo well. yum. beef teriyaki was okay. and then it turned REALLY good. This was achieved by their house kimchee, which they provide upon request. Yes all you koreans, they have kimchee if you ask. Cucumber and cabbage. it's pretty good! the combination of rice+kimchee+beef teriyaki= bomb. they put a lot of teriyaki sauce on it tho. if i order this again i would ask for less sauce. HAMACHI. GET THEIR HAMACHI. GET THEIR HAMACHI. I got the dinner combo for myself and I picked tuna sashimi and soft shell crab. The sashimi isn't that fresh to be honest, which might be the reason why my stomach felt a bit weird later. The fried soft shell crab is too oily in my opinion and the crab isn't that fresh either. read more

I started going to Satsuma regularly over 20 years ago but hadn't been in about a year. Family enjoyed take out bento boxes, sushi rolls, seafood salad and poke. Everything was excellent! Ordered online and they called for clarification on a item that we forgot to specify. Food was ready on time and bagged with cold items in a separate bag. Will definitely be back soon! read more

The service here is terrible. When you order, they bring your soup and salad, then less than a minute later, they dump your entree in front of you. They make me feel rushed. I like to eat my salad and soup and relax a little. Their food is pretty good though. Even if you tell them to not rush. They still do it. read more

I don't know if anyone else mentioned this, BUT this place is in a shopping center right next to Lucky's and Baskin Robbins.... but once you walk inside you forget that. So.... walked in at like 7pm on Sunday night... they were sorta slammed and no one came over to seat us until a little bit longer than I would have liked (-1 star) +3 stars for pretty good service once we were seated (we ordered some really spicy rolls and they just planted carafes of beverages on our table so we wouldn't die, good call!!) - also, the sushi! Great and FRESH sashimi cuts, and yummy rolls. Sunday disclaimer: There's an all you can eat for $21.95... we almost DIDN'T do it... but then we did... and it was awesome! Kind of out of control eating wise, but fun! And the rolls you can choose from are all great! I know Cali rolls are old school/newbie BUT... the golden california roll -- yum to the max! Went to Satsuma for the first time today to meet with a client. We only had a few rolls, and shrimp shumai for a toddler in tow due to a babysitter's emergency. The Albacore Special had shrimp tempura in it and was quite good. Caterpillar was also good with a nice teri sauce. Unfortunately, half the meeting attendees had to leave before they could partake of the Sakura roll, but I can vouch for the fresh and tender pieces of tuna and salmon. I wouldn't necessarily recommend Satsuma for client meetings, though, as it can get pretty noisy and hard to hear across the table. Our servers were very nice and patient with the baby. They brought out a kiddie liner for the table and he was able to play with the crayons (along with the straws, chopsticks, and sugar packets on the table) his mom brought with them. The only reason I am reserving a star is for future visits, which I will be sure to work in soon. read more

I came here for lunch during the work week which may have influenced my experience. The place was very busy and while the service was adequate, the restaurant was so loud that it was tough to understand the person sitting across the table and to speak with someone two people down the table required lip-reading skills. The food was decent but unremarkable. I wanted the lunch combo but with a special roll instead of the limited options available. I did get soup and salad, however each was an additional $2.50 which seems pricey. Add that to a $14 roll and this was more money than I care to spend on lunch. This place might be a better experience during a less busy time of day or for dinner, but I'll probably check out some other places before coming back here. read more

While out in Sunnyvale training for my new job, my co-worker and boss took me to this little sushi restaurant. I was very impressed by the cleanliness, service, and quality of the food. I came here twice in a two week period! The food is excellent...fish was fresh, rolls were delish! They get very busy during lunch so you have to get there early to get a table. I pretty much had most of their items on their menu. First things first. Fresh cuts of sashimi. When reviewing a sushi joint, you rate their sashimi over their rolls, appetizers and desserts. It's so good. It stands out in mountain view as a place to go for your sashimi fix. Rolls are great and though service could be better at times, I know how sincere and hard working the owner is. She is loved and her smiles bring an extra warmth to this place. They are trying to get better all the time so those who are complaining about the service, let their fresh and smooth sashimi warm your hearts to be a bit patient. Despite its location (next to a grocery store, in a strip mall), the crowded after-work weeknight crowd was a good sign. I've only had one dish here, but the Chef's Sashimi Special ($29), while a bit pricy, was a worthwhile meal.
