AMAZING calzone spot! I came here on a weekday night per a friend's recommendation, and it was great. Every calzone is made freshly, and that really comes through. I got the Cock-a-doodle Noodle, which comes with mac and cheese, roasted Chicken, pancetta, cheese, green onion, and buffalo butter as the sauce. The calzone bread was so, so, so soft and delicious, and the filling was quite good too, although it could've been a bit more flavorful. The sauce was pretty tasty too, had a slight kick to it. Really tasty, would recommend it! The dining room is huge too and split into three sections, wasn't too crowded when we came. I had the large beet salad with mixed greens and toasted walnuts. The salad was huge but had the equivalent of 1/4 of 1 beet on it. The walnuts were not toasted the the dressing was hot, burned my mouth. It was not as expected based on the picture and did not provide the amount of beets expected in a beet salad. Also, buried was old slimy rotting lettuce. I picked a bunch out then just stopped eating. Guess I'll try the calzone if I ever come back. read more

The portions are right on, the flavors are right on, the left overs are almost better than the first bite! The salads at Sauce on the Side are strong enough to stand on their own. If Calzones are not your thing, stop in for a salad. Fresh, flavorful, filling...you will not be sorry. I like both the Smokehouse Salad and the Strawberry Field Salad. My friend and I went in for a late dinner. The restaurant was packed! I believe there was a birthday dinner going on, so it was rather noisy. No worries as we found a quiet table in the corner. I ordered a strawberry fields salad and a cheese calzone. The salad was absolutely divine! Huge chunks of strawberry and feta cheese with an excellent vinaigrette. The walnuts were crunchy without being too hard and super flavorful. The salad is a bit pricey but you get what you paid for, and this salad is worth every single dime. The calzone was easily one of the best calzones I've had in this region. It had a perfect blend of ricotta and mozzarella and the crust was cooked perfectly. There was a sprinkle of spicy herbs, which really brought the flavors together well. The red sauce on the side was fantastic! I did not think i would like this place much in concept and in nutrition really. how could pizza filled calzones and desserts be something a fitness nut like me would really go for right? wrong! turns out they have killer good salads, and build your own calzones! my out of town bro and sister in law wanted to go here upon arrival to STL and so I went with it figuring I'd roll with it. When I saw the menu in detail nothing had to be sacrificed at all really. I got the health nut salad, dressing on the side and build your own calzone with no cheese, tons of veg and roasted chicken. All that was pure awesome and delicious and nutritious! Who knew right!? Good sized salads and calzones for darn sure. All 4 of us ate calzones and my salad and 2 beers for just over $50 before tip. Not too shabby! It did take about 20 minutes from order placement to get our food even with it being only moderately busy but oh well, it was a Friday night. This place is a 10 minute walk from my apartment and my gym so win-win on that end! I cant recall but I did say a daily specials chalkboard and I remember thinking a few of the deals looked awesome! My boyfriend and I split the large Smokehouse Salad & the monthly special "hot mother clucker". Will be trying more menu items soon! Smokehouse salad: good size salad, would be enough for a meal for one person. We added the bbq chicken which was shredded and flavorful. I enjoyed the ranch dressing a lot. Sauce on the side is one of faves , Magic Carpet Ride has always been my go to. During the height of the pandemic Sauce on the Side downtown was a staple in my house. At least once every week if not ever other week we're we ordering ahead and walking over to the restaurant. Yum! I ordered the magic carpet ride and spinach artichoke bites. Both were delicious! The calzone had a perfect amount of cheese and mushrooms. The dipping sauce was plain, but still good. The spinach artichoke bites were so good and the pesto garlic dipping sauce was so freaking good. I used it with my calzone too. I came here one night to play cards with one of the Meetup groups and had never been to this place before. I ordered the strawberry fields salad (minus the cheese) and my wife ordered one of the calzones. I honestly was not expecting much for the salad and thought it would be like most places where it is a bunch of spinach or lettuce and maybe three slices of strawberries on it. While we waited for our food, we of course played cards. Once the server brought out my salad I was shocked! There was plenty of spinach on my salad but also at least four or five strawberries cut into slices and all mixed into the salad. The dressing was also fantastic and paired amazingly with the strawberry and spinach. If you like cheese (it usually comes with cheese), I am sure it would have given more depth to the flavor. My wife liked her calzone but OMG! That thing was massive! I thought it would be the size of my hand but it was about the size of a normal dinner plate. It was really good but she could not eat the whole thing, so she ended up getting a box and taking it to work the next day. Sheesh. Here we go again with another five star rating ha ha. I don't know how I forgot to review this place, but when we moved back to St. Louis last January I meant to try this because I ended up running into the owners old fiancé or girlfriend (forget, not the point ) at a family reunion a few years ago. She said he had a little place in St. Louis making calzones called sauce on the side, I figured it was like a one shop deal, I had no idea how big it was. Anyhow, the concept sounded interesting and I think we ate there the second weekend we moved back. Holy cow, these are amazing calzones. It's a great concept because the menu is fairly simple, you have roughly around 15 or 20 calzones if memory serves, taps of local beers including their own, and very reasonable prices. Given how much food prices have soared, the fact that you can get one of these for around $12 and for most people probably you're not going to finish it is pretty great. But I'm not a quantity over quality person by any means. That's why this place rocks, ingredients are top notch. I think I've had five different calzones at this point and I would go back to all of them. The meet me in St. Louis is awesome if you're just down for a big meat fest, the mushroom one if you're not feeling meat but do you enjoy mushrooms which I do, fatty B is also amazing. Like this is a place that you take friends who were visiting from out of town. It's that good. Not to mention, it's nice to be able to have a really delicious meal with a really good beer and not have to wait in a long line or have it be some big production. You can be in and out of there in 30 minutes if you want, I prefer to have a beer wait for my calzone and then finish with a second beer, if you have the time available this leads to a great opportunity for a wonderful nap A pro tip here is one of the locations is within reasonable walking distance of Busch stadium. I say this because most people aren't aware you can bring any food you want in the stadium for games, you can't bring in liquor of course but food is all 100% allowed. So you can grab one of these phenomenal calzones for 12 or $13 and walk to the stadium and enjoy it at the Cardinals game, or you can spend $10 for a hot dog sitting on a roller with condiments at a station that you put on yourself. Great addition to The Grove. The service is fast & friendly just like their other locations. You order at the counter, then you get a card marker to take to your table. No name calling here, your calzone is hand delivered directly to you. After you're done dining, you don't even have to bus your own table, they do that for you as well. All the service is basically like a sit down restaurant, except you order at the counter. My usual order is the Meat Me in St. Louis, but today I changed things up. I ordered, the Fatty B which Ian Froeb said is the "must order" on his STL 100 list for 2016. The Fatty B is filled with; Pepperoni, Meatballs, White Onion, Provolone, Roasted Garlic, Ricotta and Garlic Oil. Of course, it had a Spicy Red Sauce on the side. Damn, it was good. A little too garlicky for me, but lucky for me I had some Yelp breath mints in my pocket so the problem was easily rectified. This may become the most popular location for SOTS. With the night life of The Grove, this place is going to be a hot spot. I know for me, this location is closer to home and I'll be stopping by for lunches on my days off. I don't get it. All this fuss for this place, and I just really don't get it. I think the concept is neat, but from start to finish yesterday while here for dinner with my sister, we were totally confused. You order your calzone and drink, then seat yourself with a strange card to receive your meal from the servers, and somehow the staff knows to bring "you" the food you ordered. That was impressive. My sister ordered The Fold (with pepperoni) and really didn't like it. Her quote was, "the best part of my meal was the Red Bull." Yikes! She really didn't like the ricotta cheese that's added to the calzones and said it messed up the texture of the dish for her. Also, neither of us liked the flavor of the marinara on the side. It tasted like some basic store-bought Ragu sauce with a few added unneccessary seasonings. As for me, I had the Roasty Toasty and wasn't much of a fan. I should've ordered something different but it was my first time here. The pesto on the side was cold which was strange to me and I would've preferred it to be served warmer. Love coming to SOTS! First time eating here at the Grove area; we usually go to the one downtown. I ordered my usual - Roasty Toasty with pesto sauce.
