Eggplant pizza, half gone before I got to it!
    Scott K.

I've been going to Sergios since they opened more than 15 years ago. Their pizza is delicious. Their regular menu items are delicious. The cookies. Well, the cookies are made by a local baker and are hard to come by because they sell out so quickly. I haven't been able to get kitchen sink cookies for, well, I can't remember the last time it's been so long. So, aside from that disappointment, and that they only had 3 packages of oatmeal raisin cookies today (I always buy chocolate chip), the food just doesn't disappoint. The dining room is closed until Summer but that shouldn't stop you from going in to see all the other wonderful desserts they have when you pick up your food/pizza!

Have been back twice since first review. I'm glad that this business survived the pandemic and rash reviews written during it like my last one. The owner reached out to make it right, I declined. I made it back twice on my own since. The last time we ate in and it was fantastic! Steak sandwich, fries, eggplant pizza, and pasta and meatballs. The pizza was especially tasty, the crust crisp, the sauce tangy, good quality cheese. All food was quite good and the prices quite fair. A combination that's very hard to find these days. Will definitely be back with my family. I really like that you pay after ordering and get your own plates and utensils. This model speeds up service. Everyone was pleasant and courteous, even though it was very busy.

A plain tomato pie and their Italian combo. Let's start with the plain. This isn't a mozzarella pizza. It's just dough, tomato sauce, grated Pecorino Romano, and olive oil. That's it. When there are only four ingredients, every one of them has to be good. And they were. The sauce had a great tomato flavor with a nice balance. The Pecorino gave it that salty bite without taking over, and the olive oil tied everything together. Simple pizza sounds easy. It isn't. There's nowhere to hide. The crust was thin with a nice crisp crunch. Good oven spring around the edge and just the right amount of char. That smoky, savory flavor is exactly what I look for in a brick oven apizza. The bottom had a great bake too. Crisp enough to hold the slice but still had a little chew. The Italian combo was loaded. Sausage, pepperoni, bacon, onions, peppers and mushrooms. Sometimes a pizza with this many toppings turns into a mess. This one didn't. Every bite was balanced. Salty, savory, a little sweetness from the onions and peppers. It all worked. Two completely different pizzas, both done really well. Olde World isn't chasing trends or trying to reinvent pizza. They're just making honest brick oven apizza with quality ingredients and it shows. I'll definitely be back. There are a few more pies on that menu with my name on them.

And we sure found a good one in Hamden on Friday. We saw refrigerated cases full of pastas and raviolis, counters with trays of pizzas, showcases with trays of prepared foods like sausage and oeooers, eggplant rollatinis, and seafood marinara, a sandwich counter for cold cuts, and a baked goods counter. We narrowed our want list down to three very different items. We bought two slices of their sausage pizza, two garlic knots, and three eggplant rollatinis. The pizza was fantastic! Super thin crust, plenty (and I mean PLENTY) of cheese, a very good sauce and delicious sausage chunks. Oh, and the slices were enormous. We made a dinner out of the eggplant and garlic knots. The eggplant was sliced so thin, and was so soft and tender, it resembled lasagna noodles! The rollatinis were loaded with ricotta cheese and marinara sauce and it was a fantastic dish. We split the three rolls and let me tell ya, one and a half rolls were plenty for dinner. The garlic knots were ridiculously loaded with garlic, not teeny tiny shavings, but big hunks of garlic cloves. Needless to say, they were fantastic as well. Our total cost was $24.66, and Sapori threw in four complimentary slices of fresh Italian bread with our order. We really loved Sapori a lot.

We had the ricotta and honey on toast, meatballs, prosciutto/mozzarella to start, some white wine and of course PIZZA! The pizza was light and cooked perfectly. We had the Dolce Salato and the Diavolina. We loved the Dolce Salato! The Diavolina was good, but I think some more spicy salami or maybe an additional spicy component would have been a good addition to the pizza. It needed just a little bit more on the flavor side. But still everything here is high quality and I would recommend! Service was excellent. We were immediately seated and had the option to sit inside or outside. I first sat inside, then we moved to a larger table outside. What I really appreciated as a new mom, was their openness and flexibility for coming in with a stroller. I was nervous to be a burden to the restaurant, but they were super accommodating. Thank you On room for improvement, I think on a hot day, having the inside space being much much cooler, than the outdoor seating (especially for newborns/really young kids/elderly) would be beneficial. Yesterday it was cool inside to start (and remember I chose to move outside), but they started to leave the front door open to allow for easy movement of staff and guests between inside and outside, which made the indoor space get warmer over time. And I totally get that for the ease of movement for staff/guests, but maybe consider keeping it super cool on the inside, so that kiddos/elderly have a cool space on a really hot day to not overheat. The vibe here is great. Chill, warm and light! Come with family and/or friends and enjoy!

Modern Apizza is absolutely worth trying if you're arriving at the right time because this place gets swamped! Thankfully the line moves quick and people are in and out constantly. The inside of the establishment screams history and is definitely an important places to visit for a blast into the past with great eats. I would definitely like to say that the custom pies are good, but the traditional cheese and Margarita pies are what I would return for time and time again. Exquisite char and cook on the traditional; fantastic flavor and depth in the margarita. Both phenomenal pies worthy of driving 2 hours for. The area sucks and parking is limited, but if you can get past that, the history, style and food is worth indulging in while you're in New Haven. The servers are professionals and make sure to cater to every whim. Definitely a classy pizza spot. VISIT THE TRI-FECTA and make sure to sample Sally's and Frank Pepe's. New Haven is the map because of its rich Italian and food history and the pizza places that bring in millions of people a year are worth trying and keeping alive.

We brought in our homemade suppi and they put it on some of our pies. We also tried the eggplant Parmesan and garlic knots. The plain pies, mashed potato, and the mangia special were my favorites but really everything there was top notch. There is nothing that I wouldn't order again. The crust is nice and crunchy. Good char on it. Sauce was delicious - not sour like straight from a can. Toppings were better than I expected for a small pizza spot. Sausage was tasty. Mushrooms were fresh not tinned, fresh tomatoes and basil. Tons of clams on the pizza. Bacon was thick sliced and left almost whole. Eggplant was sliced thin. Generous with the toppings. Even better than their pizza- is their service. It was my first time meeting them and I felt like an old friend. They were so friendly, chatted with us, told us stories -- we really had a good time. The older gentleman who brought out the food and took away the empty trays was very thorough- checked in on us regularly. Mangia Apizza is easy to miss - connected to Vick's Cafe (really it's a bar). This place is small, unapologetic, and full of character. Decorative firewood stacked with intention, walls filled with wine corks, and #10 tomato cans repurposed as pizza stands. Walk in and you immediately catch the vibe, exposed brick, distressed plaster, a slightly industrial, almost factory-style feel that somehow still feels warm and welcoming. The centerpiece of the room is the wood-fired oven, running hot and glowing with that perfect orange flame. The aroma of burning wood hits you right away and sets the tone. From that moment on, the culinary experience is in motion. We ordered The Mootz and Breaking My Meatballs. Both pies are built on a very thin, tender crust with beautiful leoparding. The dough is flavorful and clearly well-fermented. Sauce is applied with restraint, just enough to support the dough and cheese without overpowering them, and it delivers a clean, bright tomato flavor. Breaking My Meatballs was the standout. Homemade meatballs, herbed ricotta, cherry peppers, mozzarella, and that same balanced sauce. The cherry peppers bring a sharp vinegar tang that cuts perfectly through the richness of the ricotta and meatballs. Every bite hits a different note, and it all works together. Easily one of my favorites. The crust across the board was thin and tender with a delicate smoky char from the wood fire, exactly what you want from this style. Bottom line: Great spot.
