I've tried their sesame noodles and their specialty shandong chicken before and that's also super thick and tasty!! anyways THE FILLING OF THE DUMPLINGS IS SOOO GOOD!! and the outside of the dumpling was pretty thick as well so it's super filling! Had this place bookmarked for a while and since we we wenearby, I decided to finally venture here to try this infamous spot. It's such a hole in the wall place but man are those some of the best spots. I loved watching the aunties making the fresh noodles through the storefront. Usually customer service at Chinese restaurants are not great but they were super nice! We joined the waitlist on my phone on the way there and our party of 4 was immediately seated at a 6 person table round table with a lazy Susan. We ordered: Shan Dong chicken - the better version of orange chicken. So so delicious! A must get. Dry Braised Green Beans - perfectly flash fried and has so much flavor. Definitely a lighter veggie dish that helps break up all the heavier food. Salt & Pepper Prawns - the best I've ever had. Perfectly crispy and light. I could probably eat a whole plate of this myself. Onion pancakes - another winner. My friend's favorite! Can't go wrong ordering this. It was delicious even the next day! Special Shan Dong Dumplings - sadly this was the only one we all didn't like. The dough is too thick which I'm told is the style. Chicken chow mein - we ordered this at the request of our friends and asked for the handmade noodles to be used. It was delicious but a little too basic. Perhaps we will try the spicy chow mein w/ chicken to it next time. Sesame paste noodles - this is their famous dish and it did not disappoint. This was my fiancés favorite. It was bustling in a Saturday night with a rainbow of yer hip Oaklanders there to dine. Food is Northern Chinese and expertly prepared with heroic portions. Flavor was the bane of the game, and of course we opted for hand rolled noodles Before the pandemic the noodle maker worked in the front window going thru their flourey routine, sadly we couldn't watch that spectacle, but the hand cut noodles have a thick aldente texture, and hold the delectable sauces very well. We had spicy chow mein with chicken- SO GOOD, Mongolian beef that was succulent and delicious and noisiest with bean paste that were savory and slightly sweet ! We had such a great experience watching all the hip people around us and the serving staff was super fast, very friendly, and totally accommodating. This place is amazing. It's a hole in the wall gem. A handful of tables, diner type of feel almost. We got water and tea brought to us quickly. The server helped us pick out the dumplings and the hand pulled noodles with beef. So good. It was soo sooo good. Best i have ever had. The place is definitely different, but you can see it's made for function. They refilled our waters so many times, and we realized that we needed it after walking in the heat of a great day out. I used to really enjoy this restaurant, but unfortunately, today's experience changed my opinion completely. I was not only ignored, but also treated rudely. When I chose not to leave a tip and calmly explained that the waitress had not helped me at all, the man at the cashier (who I assume is the owner) responded with an unprofessional and disrespectful comment: "There are pictures on the menu, you don't know how to see?" That level of treatment is unacceptable. This will definitely be my last visit. I would strongly recommend that the owner ensure the staff receives proper customer service training, and ideally, also improve their English communication skills. Shang dong has been my to go to food place for about 10 years now ! When I'm craving Asian cuisine , they have so many yummy and delicious choices . There will always be a wait if you go on the weekend but I would say it is definitely worth the wait . I love their fresh noodles and love watching them being made through the window while I wait to be called in . My favorite plates are lemon chicken , spicy eggplant , house fried rice . The host was patient with me as I'd never been there and gave me some recommendations that I really enjoyed. They seem a smidge pricey for Chinese takeout but you're getting large portions of quality , fresh hand-pulled noodles so it's worth the price. No-nonsense Chinese Restaurant serving great food with great portions at a reasonable price. I stopped by here at the recommendation of my girlfriend who said this place has quickly climbed up her rank of Chinese Restaurants in the Bay Area. We came during dinner time (around 7:30 PM) and the place was fairly crowded with larger groups. With that being said we were able to be seated at a smaller table very quickly. For our meal we got an order of the steamed veggie dumplings, the hot and spicy eggplant, the sesame paste hand pulled noodles, and Mu Shu vegetables. The veggie dumplings were very solid - the wrapping they use in house here is extremely good and has a nice bite to it. And the veggie filling was tasty - it paired really well with their vinegar and chili oil. The eggplant was also pretty good - not the best preparation of hot and spicy eggplant I've had but it came with a lot of food and was really tasty. The Mu Shu vegetables were good in my opinion - as a heads up they do come with Eggs in them. I did not know that going in so my girlfriend didn't quite enjoy them as she doesn't eat eggs... with that said I found them to be prepped well. The stir fried veggies provided a nice crunch and made for a good wrap with the crepes provided Lastly, and most importantly, the hand pulled noodles. These were the star of the show and are a must get (and the reason my girlfriend suggested this to me in the first place) The texture/ bite of these noodles is impeccable - this is not your typical biang biang hand pulled noodle. It's not as wide but definitely a lot chewier (QQ) and very tasty. Arguably one of the best hand pulled noodles I've had in the Bay Area so far. We got ours with the sesame paste but you can get any noodle dish with these - I'm looking forward to trying some of the other noodle dishes with them. One thing to mention is the portions provided for the price - this was A LOT of food for what we paid. You definitely get your bang for your buck here. What a great find in Chinatown! My mom and I came here on early Saturday evening. When we saw a line, we had a feeling we picked a good place if people were willing to wait. We put our name on the Yelp waitlist and waited in the car until they texted us 20 mins later, as it was cold. As it was our first time, we had some questions and the waitress was patient when answering them. We ordered the veggie dumplings, green beans, sesame noodles, and the salt and pepper fish. The sesame noodles were my favorite but we enjoyed everything we ordered. I took the leftovers home and they still were good the next day. They have an extensive menu, which makes this a good place to come in a small group and order 5-6 different dishes. They even offer a deal of 5-6 dishes for $60. Only downsides were the service could be a little slow at times and the restaurant was a bit noisy. They seem to have a large volume of takeout orders and we noticed the crowds came in waves. Luckily, the food more than made up for these issues. We would love to come back again! read more

I recently returned to Shandong, and it still has the same great flavors! Got the Shandong Chicken and Wonton Noodle Soup, and both were fantastic and just as I remembered them. Some things to remember especially for those visiting from out of state: - It seems like a lot of restaurants in the Bay Area have hours where they close for a period between lunch and dinner. It is the same for Shan Dong, so be mindful to not try to go too close to their closing time at lunch otherwise they might not take your table. - It seems standard for Chinese restaurants in the Bay Area to charge for rice. Shandong charges $2/bowl, but compared to another local Oakland restaurant that charged $4 or $5 (highway robbery!!!!), it seems fairly reasonable for the area. - It can get very crowded in the restaurant and bathrooms are not the cleanest, but I come here for the food not atmosphere. Very satisfied with my experience and I always look forward to eating at Shandong every time I'm in Oakland! I've had many Wor Won Ton dinners at many different restaurants and this was the first time I was disappointed and didn't finish the bowl. My friend and I were near Oakland Chinatown on a Saturday evening and decided to grab dinner at Shandong. I was surprised the wait wasn't terrible for Saturday dinner, but it seems the restaurant does more takeout orders. They have tables for 2-4 people but also three big tables with lazy susans in the middle of the restaurant. Definitely recommend coming here in a group to try more dishes! While you're waiting, you can watch them make the handpulled noodles near the front of the restaurant. Since it was our first time here, we ordered what seemed to be the two popular items - Shandong chicken ($14.95) and the hand pulled sesame paste noodles ($13.50 + extra $3 for meat). I wanted a second meat dish so I decided to try the salt and pepper pork chop ($13.50). Of the three dishes, the chicken was probably my favorite. It's a mostly sweet fried chicken dish. I generally don't like sweet meat dishes but this one was actually decent since it wasn't too sweet. My least favorite was definitely the pork chop, which was super bland and not as tender as I prefer this dish. The famous sesame paste noodles were good, but I wasn't a huge fan of the sweet-ish sesame sauce that it's coated in and would've preferred it savory. We also made the mistake of adding chicken to the dish and the chicken was cut up in such small pieces it was hard to pick up to eat with the noodles. Ended up with a bunch of chicken and no noodles at the end. Overall I thought my meal here was decent but nothing to write home about. At least it was affordable. Paid ~$55 after tax and tip for two people, with plenty of leftovers to take home. They also have a separate menu where you can get 5 dishes for $59.95.
