For the Valley, Shik Do Rak is a well established joint in the neighborhood for solid Korean food. They're reliable, hospitable (compared to other Korean establishments) and not to mention delicious. The consistency in their food and the portions bring hoards of hungry people to this restaurant. It's the type of place my parents bring me to, not necessarily a place I would go out my way for with friends, but if the rents are paying, we definitely make a trip here. I recommend their dduk bo ssam bbq specials with chadulbaegi (thinly sliced beef), sam gyup sal (pork belly) and their galbi (marinated short ribs). Each table will get a giant bowl of scallion salad, sheets of dduk bo ssam (rice paper slices), kimchi and other ban chan. A tip: you can get an unlimited supply of all of these if you just ask your server. The lunch specials are also fabulous deals, considering you can get a combo meal with naeng myun (cold noodles) with galbi for about $12. Other stews, soups and entrees are available at a cheaper rate during the day. I can't believe a pay so much for this but it's worth every dime. Usual bill is around $50 for two people plus tax and tip. We get the thin and thick beef, it comes with tons of yummy sides, like soup and salad and Kim chi and sprouts and garlic and onions and mushrooms... I could keep going on and on. I love to wrap my meat in rice paper with a little salad a slice of raw garlic and then dip it in the homemade hotsauce! Yummy! The best hotsauce around! If anyone knows the recipe I want it. :) I highly recommend Shik Do Rak. This has to be my favorite korean BBQ place in the valley. Be it, there aren't that many and ktown is too far. It's NOT all you can eat. BUT they do give you a lot of options for pretty reasonable prices. For the 5 of us we order the $59.99 set meal and an order of the tofu soup.The set came with pork belly, sliced brisket, short ribs. It came to be just the right about of food for us. The meat was pretty good quality although the did give us a lot more of the thinly sliced brisket than any other meat. We asked for more meat rather than the soju. A wise decision when with the parental units. Could have done with more of the thickly sliced stuff. The sides were pretty good and they were really generous with the rice paper. LOVE that stuff. no pickled radish slices though. The service was okay, but the place was incredibly busy with people waiting outside. I like this place better than GEN Korean BBQ across the street. Shik Do Rak is not catered to that cool, hippy crowd like GEN. You see a diverse crowd in this restaurant and more Koreans (As servers and as customers) in general which I rarely saw at GEN which speaks volumes about its reputation in their own community. I also like its simplicity and straightforward menu options. I felt I got more meat and ate to full capacity than the so called "ALL YOU CAN EAT" KBBQ restaurants. I think it's best to pay for what you eat. At GEN you barely got any meat and you had to wait for servers to come around every so often to get your order which is repetitive, redundant and tiresome. At Shik Do Rak, I ordered probably two times from the servers and that's pretty much it. I felt I got a life story from the servers at GEN. I would definitely come here again...I feel it suits my nature...there's too many cool people at GEN. I'm just a regular down to earth dude that appreciates the simple things in life. At GEN, the hip hop music, hip college crowd and the fancy interior with its colored lighting makes me feel out of place. I do go to Ktown often to eat KBBQ, have had true KBBQ in Seoul, and I've gone here several times already and I love it. 1)People need to stop hating on the service. I'm not Korean and no I don't look Korean at all and every time I've gone here I've gotten attentive and informative service. If you're coming in at a busy time then of course they can't come to your table every five minutes to refill your rice paper. Calm your impatient butts down. 2) I love their brisket. I even get a double order over their marinated beef. Even though its not AYCE, their lunch special is more than enough for 3 people. You shouldn't be eating that much meat anyways! Favorite Korean restaurant in the valley. This is by far the best Korean food you'll get to have in the valley, my opinion. You have a choice whether you'd like to cook it yourself or in the kitchen for some items. I suggest coming here during lunch time because it is cheaper, dinner time is very expensive, but you do get yours money worth. They give out a lot of appetizers and they are my favorite. Korean bbq Shik Do Rak We came here with a friend because she recommended us to this place. We usually go all the way down to KoreaTown to eat, but we wanted to go somewhere within the valley. This place does not do all you can eat. You have to order group combo during dinner time. Upon arriving the place was fairly pack. But waiting wasn't too long we only have 4 people in our group. This place is located within Divas Nails, Shogun and Tuttle Frutti. Food came out super fast and it also include the small side dishes which was really good. Those side dishes were unlimited. We did cooked a full grill and the smoke wasn't too much. We sat there for close to two hours and when we left our clothe did not smell like bbq well maybe a little but it's better than GEN bbq. When we came during the night it wasn't that crazy. The meats was so good and just perfect. It was juicy and so far my stomach is not giving me the run. My mom really like the place, we pass by here many time and we didn't know about it. Not until our friend invited us out to eat. Overall a group of 4 runs us about $130 not including tip yet. As long the food and services are great price shouldn't be a problem. The food are fresh and tasty. I've driven by the original Shik Do Ral in K-town plenty of times, but have never stopped to eat there. Now that I'm in the Valley, its nice to know that there's an authentic, albeit not all-u-can-eat, Korean bbq place nearby. No more driving through the worst congestion in L.A. to get some decent Korean bbq. I went w/ my family (5) and we ordered from their preset list. We decided on the 89.00 family meal that included beef brisket, ribs, kalbi, one nice fatty steak and 3 bowls of spicy cold noodles (though they messed up on that part of the dinner and didn't bring the noodles out). Like most Korean places, the sides were included and replenishable at no further cost. The meal also came w/ soju, but my family decided to opt for extra brisket instead. The service here was not spectacular, which does not surprise me. It was hard to get the waitresses' attn for refills on our sides, but it was a busy night, so it was understandable. We were full, but not stuffed like we would've been at an all-you-can-eat place and the meal was a bit more pricey. Worth it if you want to avoid traffic to K-town coming from the Valley. read more

I'm not a KBBQ connoisseur, but this place is wonderfully delicious! It's always crowded, but the staff rarely leaves you hanging. They're not exactly friendly, but that's mostly because they're always running around from table to table. Let's talk about the food! So much food. The meat they give in the combos are fresh and have great texture. Side dishes abound here, so if you love them, you'll be very happy. The waitresses also come by from time to time to cut up the meat for you. It feels like your mom's cooking half of your dinner or something. Oh, and the combos come with soju. My friends and I can't drink (in public) yet, so we had to decline them, but if you are, I bet you're glad I told you, right? My only gripe about Shik Do Rak is the price. I had the lowest expectations for the valley Shik Do Rak mainly because I didn't even like the one in K-town. The cuts were of low grade, the service sucked harder than my Dyson, and the overall feel felt like eating in a garment warehouse. I have once again been astounded by the discrepancy between the two locations under the same name. For one this place has a nice Korean restaurant feel, the service is above par, the cuts of meat are good quality, prices are more than reasonable and the food is overall mighty welcoming. Normally we go in a group and order one of the combinations that comes with a myriad of different meats. Our favorites are cha dol beh gi (brisket), sang gyup sal (pork belly), galbi (rib meat) and tongue. You can also ask for the soy bean soup during the meal along with rice if that's what tugs your boat (in my case tug away). To find Korean BBQ in the valley at this caliber was up until now impossible. For a group of 6, we ordered all that meat (left unfinished) and two bottles of soju and ended up each paying $20 including tip. If that's not a good deal for you, go back to your supplier and snort more coke. read more

This is my favorite KBBQ place in the SFV. Its not all-you-can eat, but the combo prices are pretty reasonable and very very filling. I love the briskets and don't really care for the other meat options that much. Their spicy sauce is SO GOOD. I wish they would sell it in a bottle for the public. I tried to make it at home once, but it wasn't the same. I need to know their recipe! I would say for two people you will end up spending a total of $45 to $65. Parking is plentiful in the lot. The wait some times can be 15-20 minutes depending on how busy they get. Not bad for the valley ! Went there tonight with a party of 5. we ordered a combo platter for $99, so that comes out to about 20 bucks a person. We ate till we were very full and still had leftovers. The combo came with 5 different kinds of meat to bbq, plentiful variety of side dishes, duk bo sam (rice paper to wrap the meat) dipping sauces, 2 bowls of naengmyun (cold noodles), bean paste stew, and even a bottle of soju ! Service is fast and efficient, the quality of the meat and everything else was good. I know this place has a reputation for being a little over priced .. But just get a platter and you'll get a great deal ! I want to give this place 5 stars .. But it doesn't really match up to the places in ktown.. So 4 will have to do ! read more

I've been to Korea and ate at many places there. Every time I come here, feels like I'm back. I've been to other Korean BBQ places before and they're good, but not authentic like this place. The atmosphere is what you make it and can get a little cramped but what really gets me coming back is the food! It's fresh and not overbearing. One thing that makes a good Korean BBQ place, in my opinion, is the quality of the Kim-chi, and the Kim-chi here is awesome. Another way to tell is that there are Koreans eating there. I've been to a few Korean BBQ places where I didn't see not one Korean (besides the workers). The prices are reasonable too. Damn, I miss LA sometimes. Sprawl or not, there are some kick-ass Korean restaurants in LA. Shik Do Rak specializes in Duk Bo Ssam, which are layers of thin duk (rice flour or rice cake) wrappers in which you place your grilled meats with accompanying vegetables and sauces. It's dukalicious. I have not been to the Koreatown location, which is the original location, but I've heard it's not as nice. Eh....location. There's no there there in LA so it doesn't really matter. So among other indignations about a LA boy living in N.Cal (among them, having to listen to the freakin, damn Gnats, Warriors and 49ers all the time on local radio), I'm left to scratch my skin raw thinking I could be eating at this place, Gil Mok, Yongsusan and other Korean eateries in LA. I wish I could give this place 3.5 stars but because Yelp doesn't allow that, I will hand over 4 stars. Plus, their hot sauce wins me over each time. This is the best kbbq in the valley. The meat isn't anything special, but it's overall good quality, the salad is fresh and the soup they serve with the bbq is excellent. However, their side dishes are pretty disappointing - I love sides and I only touch the kimchi whenever I come here. The meat is tasty and won't disappoint, whether its beef brisket, pork belly, or marinated types. The HOT SAUCE they serve here though is a whoooole 'nother story: I am in love with it. I seriously come here just so I can get a piece of rice paper, beef brisket, dunk it in bowl of their magical sauce, combine it with grilled kimchi and salad, and shove the whole thing in my mouth. It is actually the definition of heaven. So if you're going to come here, make sure to dunk all meat in hot sauce. It is seriously the BEST out of very many kbbq places I've tried in ktown. To be honest, I was a little disappointed with this place. I really like Korean BBQ and I enjoyed the food that i had there, but it definitely wasn't the Korean BBQ I was hoping for. I spent a month working in Korea and was treated to some damn fine BBQ places and Shik Do Rak was lacking in some key ares. First off, where's the re pepper paste? WTF? How does that even work? I thought red pepper paste was a given. Plus we didn't get any lettuce leaves to wrap the meat in (something that happens everywhere in Korea). The sides were decent though. My friends and I had a sudden craving for Korean BBQ and this place was one of the few ones around Northridge so we decided to try it out. I regret it. The food was mediocre and service wasn't particularly good but I wasn't expecting magic at a place that Korean BBQ restaurants are a rarity, the thing that pisses me off though was the bill came up to $90+ and so since we didn't have a particularly good experience here, my boyfriend didn't want to give a full 15%. While we were walking out, the manager stopped us and asked us to give more which annoyed me. I have been to this spot three times now, and the food is consistently good! I order the marinated chicken and beef to make at your table. It's some of the best tasting meat I've ever had. The meat comes with these rice wraps and different sauces. The whole meal also comes with salad a bunch of sides (including kimchi) , a broth soup, and rice. Let me also say that I finally convinced my boyfriend to come with me, and he is not into trying new cuisines. But, now he keeps talking about how great it was. He loved the meat, salad, and rice, but wasn't quite adventurous enough to try any of the sides. I'm so glad I got him to come so we can visit more often :) read more

Korean food is not my speciality and my knowledge of it is limited to a handful of meals in a few places spread from Akron OH to San Diego CA. This spot, located at the busy business corner of Reseda Blvd. and Devonshire in Northridge, CA, seems to be a local favorite with lots of devoted customers. Driving by, especially on weekends, one notice the parking lot is full and the restrauant seems packed. Indeed, we drove up one weekend, but were a bit intimidated by the crowds ... and the fact that everyone eating there seemed to be Korean, and we aren't!! So we passed and resolved to return on a week night when the crowds were thinner and we would not feel so self-conscience. We have been back twice (on weekday evenings) and had positive experiences both times. BBQ is the thing here ... with the gas cooking plates set into each table. Tables can accommodae from four to eight or so customers. When we have eaten there ... most of the customers have been Korean (well at least they seem to be). Portions are excessively large. My suggestion is to try to order for one less person than is in your party ... two of us went once and we only ordered one portion of BBQ beef, Bul Gogi, ($18.99 per person), and it was plenty for two. Last night we were three and we ordered two portions. We finished most all of the food (and all of the beef) and were more than satisified with the quantity. Three orders would have been too much. The beef is served with a wide range of Korean side dishes (see other reviewers for details on what these are), rice, flat noodles (dok bo sam?), and side sauces. Most of these are spicy, but not all. With the exception of some of the chicken alternatives, prices pretty much go up from this level -- and some seemed pretty pricey. Apparently a very popular option here (several other tables ordered it it seemed) is the Duk Bo Sam (Black Angus beef brisket) at $29.99 per person. Beer is priced fairly here ... large quart style bottles of Korean beer at $5. And soft drinks are very reasonably priced too ... $1.00. Service is acceptable (the waitresses are nice) ...but there does seem to be a bit of a language problem if you are not a Korean speaker. On our first visit we seemed to be able to communicate well with our waitress, but on our second visit last night communication was definitely an issue. The two women who waited on us had only the most rudimentary English language abilities ... they could take the order, and say hello, thank you, and some other basic English, but that seemed to be the extend of their English abilities. They seemed baffled by our questions (simple ones ... like "what is this?" and "how should I eat that?" Again, this place seems quite popular locally and as a non-Korean speaker I will probably only go on weekday evening when the place is not packed and I won't feel like a klutz asking a question or doing the wrong thing with my food! Three of us ate for $47.60 ... two orders of Bul Gogi, a beer, and a coke. I will definitely come back ... and try the Buk Bo Sam next time. read more

Great food, with a little bit of lag in service, this place is one of the few all NON-all you can eat korean bbq, and it really shows. The Kalbi is top notch, and the side dishes are really good. Just ate here today, first time. It's a cute place that's not too big. Ventilation is decent but I was a bit hot. They have OB Golden Lager which I had, also Kirin and OB Blue. Ordered Bulgogi beef and some chicken. Both tasty and delicious, but I've had better Bulgogi beef. Sides were good and plenty and the kimchi was yummy, a bit spicy. Service was very good, our server was very sweet and tended to us frequently. A great place for Korean BBQ in the valley for sure. This place is fuego. We came here after my brother's graduation and ordered enough food to feed a barn. You can get the family combos and there is enough food in it to get you full! It comes with various meats, smelly but dank soups, steamed egg, banchan, and bibim nengmyun (surprisingly tasty). You can also order other things off the menu that do not require a grill like dumplings or chicken cutlets or whatever. The service is korean style. I love it because you dont have one designated waiter and you can shout whatever you want to the nice korean ladies walking by and they bring it with the quickness. The korean ladies are very nice to me. People complain about the price but I think the price is fair for a valley korean bbq place. If you cant afford paying a little extra, dont complain and go to the pine tree to have their $10 lunch special where you get low quality meat and less tasty banchan. Or take yo cheap a$$ to the wang deh ji to get the $10 AYCE (all day) with no banchan and bottom of the barrel cows. Plus, neither of those places have nice korean ladies like the Shik. I will start by saying, I LOVE eating food from different countries, but I wish I had some Korean friends.... Now those two statements may seem a bit odd at first. Allow me to explain. Eating foreign, often times food from Asian countries can be really confusing. It is nice to have someone who grew up with a totally different food culture to help "guide" you through what you are eating, so you don't get caught in the "whoa....that is sooo good, too bad I have no idea what it is" situation. I used to live in a part of Texas that had a huge Koren culture and a good friend would take me with him to show me the ropes...too bad I forgot most of what I liked... But I think like most people I know, I love Bulgogi. Amazing. So when I do want Korean thats usually my go to, since most everything else is as foreign as, well...Korea. Ha...didn't see that one coming did you? Shik Do Rak is awesome. Sooo much to offer But as I got just the Bulgogi, thats all I can talk about. The place was pretty empty around 3p on a weekday, but the peopl who were there were only Korean. So being a white guy all by myself surrounded by 12 different dishes (forget what all the appetizers you get when you order anything are called) and eating ALL of it, did make me fee like the fish out of water, but it was so worth it to eat such good food. The bulgogi was cooked so well, so soft and moist. All of the appetizers were amazing, plus they served a small salad with this awesome sweet sesame(?) dressing. This is def a great place for groups as most of the BBQ is geared towards lots of people eating together (sort of whats at the heart of Korean dining). Brags (+): The barbecue is tasty; we ordered chadol and bulgogi and the quantity and quality of the meat was enough to satisfy my sometimes picky mom. The former meat goes great with the duk rice paper. Beat (-): Not much... the service could be a little better, but that's typical fare for an Asian restaurant, right? Variance (~): Sides and salad are included plus refills, but you have to flag down the waitresses to get it. My dad was shouting and waving his arm around for quite a bit once to get more salad, but once they come around they're pretty quick and will get you whatever you need. I guess when it says on the menu that they're the home of the original Dok Bo Sum, then that's what you oughta get. But accompanying the rice paper were red spicy looking mixtures. I got the bibimbap instead. My mom got soon tofu with no spice. She liked her soon tofu fine (although it came with only 2 shrimps and one clam) but I thought my tolsot bimbimbap was only okay. The ban chan were kinda disappointing. Service was almost non-existent although the ladies were running around between all the full tables so I didn't feel like it was completely bad service per se. A good Korean friend of ours recommended Shik Do Rak to us as the best Korean BBQ in the valley, and we would have to agree. I know several reviewers have commented on bad service, but we certainly didn't see that at all. Granted it was late, and maybe they didn't have many other customers, but the staff was lovely. More importantly, the food was very good! Not as good as what you can get in K-town, but certainly better than the other spots in the valley we have visited. Their menu is loaded with different choices, but our waitress very helpfully suggested a trio of meats: bulgogi, short ribs, and pork belly. All you can eat, of course. These came with a veritable plethora of ban chan, and rice. We went through two full servings of meat, and the meat was very good! We love Korean BBQ, so are very comfortable cooking our own food, but the waitresses would periodically come by and help turn or cut meat too, which we certainly appreciated. All in all, a great meal, and a whole lot easier than driving into K-town! read more
