I know this hit a New York top 100 but I think on principle, I have to dock it not just on taste and experience, but how the menu is structured. The food was all good (about a 4/5). My highlights from the meal were the carrot dip. It was fresh and the nuts in it added a layer of complexity to it. The breads were also good, especially the Moroccan bread (better than what I had when I was in Morocco) and the bread with corn butter on it. The hummus was decent, the fries were abundant, and the cucumber peach salad was refreshing but too expensive for what it was. My issue with this place is that when you buy a dip, it doesn't come with any bread at all, forcing you to buy both. Each bread only comes with one piece and when a single pita is $7 (which definitely isn't enough for a dip), it becomes a little bit ridiculous. Server had great vibes though! read more

I don't know why it took me so long to come here, but Shukette might just be my new favorite Middle Eastern restaurant in NYC. I've been to Shuka, and this is even better. Our waiter, Vlad, gave great recommendations. We started with a floral gazoz, the frena and labneh, which was topped with strawberries and hazelnuts. OMG, I could have gone to heaven right there! Next we had tempura fried squash blossoms that were stuffed with a goat cheese and served with this incredible tomato dip. Then we shared a lamb skewer that was served on a bed of hummus and broccolini. The meat, which was marinated in ras al hanout, was perfectly spiced and cooked and every flavor on the plate only further enhanced it. Dessert was the only dish we didn't find a 10/10 but the tahini soft serve was still quite good. First Impressions: I've had this spot on my list for a long time... made a last minute girl date dinner with a friend and managed to snag a 6:45pm reservation. We were sat outside but it was quite cozy and warm... the only time it got chilly was when someone would come in or out of the outdoor area and prop the door open letting out all the heat. Rude. LOL The Noms: Labneh- my favorite... the perfect balance of smooth and creamy with the unique flavor of the pomegranate Beet hummus- not my favorite but my friend loved it. I think I prefer a more savory versus sweet dip Frena- this bread was delicious. It had a focaccia type taste and texture and tons of garlic... the best part. Just wish it came with the dip and wasn't so expensive. $15 for a small bread to share. Adana- beef and lamb, was perfectly cooked and spiced... but also didn't come with pita or any kind of bread so we ate it alone. Would have been nice to have it with something. Shawarma fries- a bit burnt in the sense that it was all crispy throughout instead of just the outside and none of the soft bite in the middle that I love with perfectly cooked French fries. Skip it. Tahini soft serve - it was good but a little disappointing but not enough pomegranate and sauce to cut through the soft serve. In Conclusion- I would 10/10 come back here just for the labneh and frena bread. Would still recommend to all my friends. Very vibe-y restaurant with solid food and service. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. Not sure if they also had it outside but I appreciated the coat racks inside by each table. There seemed to be a bit of a wait so I was glad we made a reservation ahead of time. We ordered 5 dishes to share between 4 people and were all satisifed at the end. I came here for a family style meal for my friend's birthday. She raves about her absolute favorite restaurant in the city and I'd previously heard good things as well. For a restaurant with a trendy reputation, it was pretty casual. We had an outdoor table. They have really powerful fans overhead, which were maybe a little too strong but good for a hot summer day. The waiters were very attentive to us and we had excellent service throughout the night. We told them we were celebrating a birthday. The fare is Mediterranean/ Middle eastern and are meant to be shared family style. They have a lot of bread options. We had the frena bread, which was everyone's favorite and we also had pita with hummus and labneh. Next time, I'd like to try the bourek too (I live halloumi). For veggies, we had zucchini, cucumbers and the shukette cherries. The cherries were the wildcard for me which I surprisingly ended up liking. They're savory cherries and were seasoned almost like a ceviche with a nice lime taste. I really enjoyed those. For me meats we had the chicken wings, the beef and lamb kofta and fish in a cage. Of the three I thought the kofta were probably the most flavorful followed by the chicken but none was particularly a standout. The fish was a little bland and the sauce leaned a little spicy. For sides we had the rice (I didn't try this) and the fries. I really liked the fries and they were probably my favorite thing on the main menu (not sure if that's good or bad). They were well seasoned and very crispy. Great crunch. Finally, just before we wrapped up the night, we sampled their tahini soft serve and blueberry sorbet, which are their two desserts. Both were great. The tahini is nutty and especially good if you like halva. Overall, it was a good night. We had the BEST experience at Shukette. The ambiance was impeccable (loved the music). Service was welcoming and friendly and so generous. We sat at the counter which was absolutely perfect for watching the amazing chefs do their thing and chatting with other guests. We were given small plates of food from the chef to try that were on the house and we shared with the people next to us so everyone could try. Things we probably would've never ordered on our own, but WOW-- it was worth it when the chef said "just trust me". We tried half of the menu and each dish was better then the next. Our favorites were the dips, breads, cherries and the wings. I will be dreaming about this meal until the next time we are in NYC. I'd truly come to the city just to dine here. We got the hummus, frena, boureka, and broccoli, and everything was so delicious! The hummus and frena go hand-in-hand. Definitely get them both for a classic Shukette's rip and dip experience. The frena was soft with a crispy bottom, while the hummus was incredibly smooth and creamy. The boureka is filled with halloumi, spinach, and mozzarella and garlic butter. Every bite was full of flavors albeit a little greasy, which I didn't mind too much. The broccoli was well charred and came with labneh on the side. The portions were small for how much each dish costed, but it's nyc. Service was quick. Definitely recommend getting a reservation to avoid waiting as they do get busy. The Jojeh Chicken taste really good. I was interested it in trying it because of its name. I love the Middle Eastern seasonings inside the meat. One of my favorite restaurants I've been to in NY. I've heard amazing things about the food and chef, then when previously looking at the menu- I was thrilled to try as everything sounded great. We had an interior table reservation on a Friday and the place was bustling (even their multiple exterior seating areas were full). We were seated a bit after our reservation. The vibes were on point and their music selection of 90s hip hop really set the tone. I loved the open kitchen behind the bar. It was like a bit of theater watching all of the amazing chefs working and cooking in such a limited space. The main chef/expediter that night was amazing and literally took such care and paid such attention to everything that went out. So impressive given the chaos and sheer amount of people dining. The food? Killer. Just for real, every single item we ordered was bursting with flavor and perfectly executed. As others have said, the frena bread is a must order- it's insane. We wanted a second but didn't want to spoil the meal. The hummus? Crazy. The best I've ever had. The chicken was beautifully done, vegetables all great. My last visit to Shukette was in 2023 and everything was flawless. Unfortunately, my second visit today was not as successful. The hummus and french fries were, as always, fantastic, as was the Frena. However, my lamb kebab entree was dry, small and one-note in flavor ($29 btw). Other duds were the Charred Broccoli and Pickles. For a $200+ meal, it was truly disappointing. Service was great once inside, but the check-in experience is a mess. read more

Barely snagged a reservation at 4pm on a Sunday, but service was fast and solid. I was overall impressed with the dishes and ingenuity, but find it generally overpriced. We ordered the whipped carrot dip with their famous frena bread, both of which were extremely delicious. We also tried the sunchokes alla plancha, which were a surprisingly flavorful vegetable dish with with a yogurty almond spread. Lastly for the main, we got the steak kebabs - the butter beans were delicious but the fried crispy ones on top were a bit too crunchy and hard. The food came out extremely quickly, so they clearly have an efficient process in the kitchen. So very delicious. I snagged a 5:15 reservation that meant sitting counter-side, and was nervous because I knew my friend wouldn't be able to make it until 5:40. They seated me without any pushback, and were tolerant when I was that schmuck who had to take a call during a packed service. The food was also so freaking good. We tried the frena, the cauliflower, the halloumi, the butter beans, the beet tzatziki, and the pickles. I also really enjoyed sitting at the bar because you could see all the cooking and plating take place so it was a visual experience as well. Definitely want to comeback and try other things! How did it take me SO long to finally come here? This place was sooooo so good I NEED to talk about the Frena - so chewy, so soft, so buttery and garlicy. Such an exciting menu to order off of- there's a really great selection of vegetarian and non-veggie options. You can tell a lot of thought went into balancing flavor and variety; every dish we tried felt fresh and well-seasoned. The patio seating is pretty tight and can be loud with passing by emergency vehicles with their sirens on, so if you're sensitive to noise, you might prefer sitting inside. I think this is my favorite Mediterranean place I've been to! I got the Steak Shish-kebab and the lamb skewer and everything was extremely flavorful. The meats tasted amazing, the sauces was really unique, and there was a delightful crunch in each bite (such as from the crispy black rice)! This is a place I'd definitely be interesting to come back to. For desserts, I was originally going to get their tahini soft serve, but ended up getting their swirl - which was tahini and coconut. If you've been fighting for a reservation at Shukette - it's worth it! Order everything, but start with the Floral Spritz. The Frena bread is outstanding and my favorite item of the evening, and the Laffa is also a good choice. Get all the dips, especially the Hummus. The Pickles were super tasty, and I also enjoyed the Mushroom Tempura and Glazed Sweet Potatoes. Sadly, the fries were a tad underwhelming. My friend and I went to Shukette on a Sunday night without reservations so it was quite busy but we still managed to get bar seats after roughly a half an hour wait (and trust me, this place is definitely worth the wait). To start, the service is impeccable. Our bartender Franklin was awesome- very attentive without being overbearing whatsoever. As for the food, everything we ordered was delicious but some dishes stood out more than others. In no particular order, here is what we ordered- Frena- yes it is just bread in essence but man is it good, definitely get it with some dips as well but eating it plain is suffice as well. Labneh- very tasty and unique, I've never had labneh like this before. Eat this with the frena = pure heaven. Fish in a Cage- one of the main standout dishes and rightfully so. The porgy was cooked really well and it was quite flavorful. I wish there was a bit more fish but of course porgy is very bony so it is what it is haha. Tahini Oat Milk Ice Cream- this is the only dessert that Shukette carried and honestly it wasn't my cup of tea. However, let's circle back to our awesome bartender Franklin who saw our reactions to the dessert and took it off the receipt. To take the initiative to do this without asking us our thoughts (albeit a barely touched ice cream is quite indicative) is great customer service. All in all, I would definitely return with or without reservations and 100% with an appetite. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city so I was happy to be able to introduce a friend to it and walk in without a res for the night. Honestly next time (and I think this every time I go to a Mediterranean spot) I would just get a bunch of dips and apps and go to town. I loved the heirloom tomato salad with toum, and we ordered even more toum. The garlic fresna went so well with it too. I remember the fish entree being a much larger portion last time I had it; this time around it felt really small for $38, but it was still tasty nonetheless. We went to Shukette for dinner on a Wednesday night and the place was packed! The restaurant has bar seating as well as 4-tops and on the other side of the restaurant more tables! We got seats at the bar and had the best views to watch the kitchen staff cook, prepare and get the food out. We ordered the Pomegranate Ginger Lemon drink, which was very refreshing! To start, we ordered the Labneh spread and the Moroccan Frena bread. The Labneh spread had sliced apricots, honey, pistachio and mint and it was so delicious with the fresh baked Frena bread. I could eat that every day! For our main course, we ordered the Shrimp Kebab, the Grass-fed Steak Shish Kebab and roasted Cauliflower. On the Shrimp Kebab we had the sauce (castelvetrano oil, lemon, saffron, Serrano and cilantro) on the side due to allergic reaction that my friend had. The kebabs come out hot on the skewers so they offered to remove it off the skewers for us! I added the sauce to my shrimp and it was very tasty. The steak kebab arrived with lentils, carrots, red onions and orange sauce that made the dish so wonderful. I love roasted cauliflower in general, but the sauce which included tahini and lime over the cauliflower made the taste so magical. The steak kabob was my favorite entree of the night and coming in a close second was the roasted cauliflower. To finish our dining experience we ordered their Mic Drop Tahini soft serve. To me, the soft serve was refreshing, but the tahini sauce made it tangier than I preferred. All and all, I would definitely return to try their other dishes! read more

We had a lovely server We sat outside on a Wednesday evening. Here's what the three of us shared: Breads: Frenda & Khachapuri I was tempted to order a second frenda, it was so fresh and good! The khachapuri is a sesame bread lover's heaven. The cheese inside was a bit salty but it went great with the rest of the shuk. Shuk: Adana, zucchini, corn dip and watermelon salad Would order everything by again except for the Adana. The lamb balls were dry but the sauce made it tolerable. Watermelon salad was great even though it had no cheese (I'm used to feta in my watermelon salad) -pleasantly surprised. Zucchini is great for any table wanting to increase their veg intake. Mains or Al ha'esh: Beef shish kabobs: five stars would get again. Whole fish: biggest disappointment. Mom and I nearly cried it was so salty. It was like the porgy fish was marinated in the ocean. The veg that came with it (mini potatoes & string beans) were barely cooked, but they had a nice char on it. (1) The hummus is a fantastic starter and is something I could eat all day. (2) the broccolini was also great - one of the best vegetable dishes I've had. (3) the shrimp kabobs were not the most flavorful, still good though. (4) the fish in the cage was really flavorful and they cleaned it really nicely - barely any bones in the mid-section. The spritzes we ordered were very tasty as well - the herbal and the fruity were both great and came garnished really nicely. The music - they were playing throwback R&B, some pop rap, some pop. It's just a fun atmosphere overall. If you're a party of 2, I would recommend sitting at the counter (hopefully near the kitchen) to see all the action. Was finally able to visit the renowned Shukette after visiting its sister resturaunt, Shuka a few years back. We were able to get a table for two outside when we walked in at 9 PM on a Thursday. On first glance, I adored the menu! A mix of dips, breads, small plates, and a few main plates. We just came to snack so we ordered the Frena bread, lafa bread, labneh, crispy squash blossoms, and the tahini blueberry soft serve. The squash blossoms were a little too fried for my taste, the labneh was good, the lafa was just ok, but the frena bread and the soft serve-- out of this world! The frena bread was perfectly crispy and oily on the outside, pillowy on the inside- almost focaccia like, with big bulbs of roasted garlic sitting on top. I've never had a bread like it. The tahini and blueberry sorbet swirl was one of my favorite bites and top desserts in the city- and that's a tall order! Neither flavor was too sweet, and there was sharp ginger at the bottom that threw me for a (pleasant) loop. Truly addictive! read more
