Although the ingredients were fresh and tasty, the bowl was half full. I finished my bowl in about 5 minutes and was left as hungry as before. The bowl looked nothing like the photo. My favorite was the kalbi paired with the sweet potato vermicelli and the Brussels sprouts. It also goes perfect with the lemon ginger vinaigrette. I went to Som Bo with a coworker for their grand opening... BOGO bowls? Heck yes. The menu looked great, and we liked the fast casual concept as a new lunchtime option in the neighborhood. The line to order was a little long, and we quickly found out why. The ordering took foreverrrrrrrr. There was one cashier, and it seemed to take way too long to enter everyone's customized order. From an operations perspective, they really should either do it Chipotle-style (just have the customer go down the line and point at stuff they want, then ring up the price based on the meat at the end) or just emphasize the pre-set options so the cashier isn't sitting there entering every separate topping. It took us a solid 20 minutes to get through a line of about 10 people to order (we only stuck around because of the BOGO deal). Once we ordered, the food was prepped fairly quickly. Another downside of ringing people up first: the kitchen ran out of the garlic chicken so asked me if I wanted something else instead. I opted for the upgrade to the short rib of course, so this disappointment turned into a positive. Overall, it took us about 30 minutes to get our food from the time we got in line... definitely not a good lunch option for grabbing a quick bite, so they'll have to work on that. The food itself was really tasty. The short rib was a little undercooked, but was very flavorful. I go the brussel sprouts (really good!) and the cauliflower was solid as well. So, 5-stars for the food, but 1-star for the service due to slow speed / inefficiency (a big part of a successful fast casual concept). Upon getting my order after being called, I noticed that one bowl is missing a side so I had to ask for them to add the side back (broccoli). Som Bo is kind of hit and miss. Sometimes it's good and sometimes the food is lacking. It depends on the staff of the day. I stop by here often because it's on my way home and the food is quick. I usually order the build your own bowl with the lemon grass chicken, sweet potato noodles, and I change up the sides. Today I got the string beans and kimchi apples. While they were generous with the sides this time(sometimes they don't fill up the bowl), the string beans still have the stems on. It just seems shoddy to leave the stems on. I use to like this place but today I ordered grilled steak and it was comply burned on outside and when I asked the staff they said it's supposed to be like that because it's grilled... so I gave a benefit of doubt and took that as take out. I tried the Chili Lime Chicken with sweet potato noodles and the two sides: miso kale & kimchi and beet noodle. Not a fan of the miso kale & kimchi but just a preference. Also tried grilled organic tofu with purple rice and two sides: bok choy and corn & edamame. Wasn't a huge fan of the bok choy or the tofu. Both didn't have much flavor. This place has done a great job with search engine optimization since it popped up in Google Maps when I was looking for salad (and there is a salad place across the street which didn't show up). So take all I'm glad they have vegetarian and vegan options, but the food leaves a lot to be desired. I got the broccoli, sweet potato, tofu bowl over greens. There is no sauce or dressing for the greens. The sweet potatoes are tasty but seem to be deep fried, and the broccoli was coated in a lot of oil as well. The main issue though, and why I can't recommend to any vegetarians, was the tofu. It was literally blackened, and tasted very bitter and burned. I asked the girl working there if they had any that wasn't burned and she said that's how they serve it--charred. Perhaps this is a valid way to prepare some kinds of meat but it just does not work for tofu. Brown grill marks are ok (though honestly have minimal effect on the flavor, since tofu contains barely any fat) but blackened is just gross. read more

Sweet potato noodles over cooked and flavorless. Veggies were nothing to write home about. The food was palatable but anywhere near the "three treasures" of the restaurant's namesake. Also, the sauces were all unlabeled on a counter. It would have been more helpful to have signs for the sauces perhaps? I've been to Som Bo 10 times in the last two months. The staff is always friendly and accommodating. The reason I'm giving them 3 stars instead maybe 4 or 5 is because while there were six times the food was excellent - the other four times my food tasted burnt. I noticed the four times this happened it wasn't too busy and I'm assuming the food was just sitting there for awhile. Hopefully they can figure out away to correct this as going forward - if I notice it's not busy inside I'm to probably going to find something else in the area to eat. All their ingredients are low calorie and the proteins are lean so you can literally pick anything without worrying about ruining your diet. I'm surprised there aren't more reviews on this place. It's located in Chelsea, with a clean bright interior with plenty of seating. The menu had a great selection of meat, bases and toppings to choose from. My husband went with the steak (came out soft and juicy!) and I went with the Korean short ribs. Both were sooo good. Heard about a new spot called Som Bo from friends and everyone had nothing but good things to say about. The restaurant's menu and name is inspired from a popular traditional Chinese (Cantonese) dish "Sam Bo Fan" which is one of my all time favorites. Needless to say, I decided to see what the hype was all about. Upon arrival, the store is located in Chelsea around the corner of a busy street with clear & see thru windows. The location and store layout is absolutely gorgeous. The staff including the manager/store owner were very welcoming, polite and prepared to assist customers with the menu & ordering. There's also complimentary fresh cucumber and lemon infused water and tasted very refreshing. I ordered the grilled steak with sweet potato vermicelli noodles, bok choy, brussel sprouts and topped it off with the scallion chimichurri sauce. The service here is great, you can definitely see all the workers collaborating together to serve your order. In fact, the manager (Russell) was the person who was cooking and prepping my bowls. I felt honored since its not too often for me to have one of the store owners cook for me lol. The orders took no longer than 5 minutes. Now for the taste of the food... It tasted absolutely delicious. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much but the quality and combination of the ingredients all complimented each other so well. The chimichurri sauce enhanced the perfectly cooked medium rare steak. The meat was succulent, tender and full of flavor. The veggies tasted very fresh and I was mind blown from the charred brussel sprouts. The texture had a nice but not too overwhelming crunch with a smokey taste. I've never really been a big fan of them before but decided to get them since they looked too good to pass up on. No regrets whatsoever. The noodles helped balance all the flavors of the bowl and were very al dente. I was very satisfied and satiated with the meal and didn't feel any indigestion or bloating whatsoever. The meal was exceptional and worth every single cent. TL;DR - Som Bo is a new and innovative Asian fusion restaurant that brings together the freshest Western & Asian ingredients that strives to portray an modernized image of authentic yet healthy Chinese food. This isn't your typical Chinese takeout around the neighborhood with Chicken & Broccoli with fried rice which is certainly not "Authentic" Chinese food. As a fellow Asian-American it's always been a little funny hearing some of my friends describe Chinese food as greasy, oily, unhealthy etc., with all of the exposures to Chinese takeouts. Not to stay they're necessarily wrong, but it's crazy how Chinese cuisine has been so misconstrued all these years so who can blame them? The foods that are made from Chinese takeouts are far from the authentic Chinese cuisine.
