SomiSomi - is the hype true? Yes, it is. I finally got to try SomiSomi. I was avoiding it for the longest time because the lines were ridiculous and swerving around the block. However, on a Wednesday evening, there was barely a line and service went super fast. You can build your Ah-Boong (fish and ice cream) however you want. Fill your fish pastry with red bean, taro, custard, or Nutella, pick your soft serve (they also swirl two flavors together and will display which ones they have for the day) and then add toppings if you want any. You can also not get a fish pastry and simply get soft serve as well. If you want your soft serve and fish pastry in a cup, ask for it to be "upside down"! That way you'll have a cup to conveniently hold everything. I tried the fish pastry filled with red bean, with the milk and Oreo soft serve. The fish pastry is made fresh so it's still warm when you get it. It is crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. The red bean was not skimped on and definitely added some sweetness to the fish. However, it's the soft serve that wins it over for me. It's so delectably creamy and luscious without being overly sweet at all. The milk soft serve is to die for, and being swirled with the Oreo actually wasn't bad. I thought it was going to be much sweeter or heavy, but the Oreo soft serve was pleasantly not sweet and had a subtle enough Oreo flavor without being sickeningly sweet. Loved the swirl together. The order came out within like a minute after paying. It was super fast and tasted amazing! Would recommend and will be back for at least the soft serve. SomiSomi is one of those spots that will never get old. Every time I have it, I feel so satisfied and it's seriously just a dessert that hits the spot. I'm sad that they got rid of the Cookies and Cream flavor and replaced it with Black Sesame but the Ube flavor still slaps!! I've been to this location a few times, mostly for the convenience factor, since I tend to eat at the Main Street plaza quite a bit. The line is always long but for good reason. The staff here is efficient and knows how to keep things moving though, so you never have to wait too long. I'll typically just get a soft serve cup on most days, but the Ah-boong is quite good. I've only really gotten the Nutella filling since you really can't go wrong with that one. I want to travel to the different locations just to try the unique flavors!! My go-to is any swirl that has matcha or black sesame, a red bean or Nutella taiyaki, topped with Oreo and macaron. Finally got to check this place out. I've been deterred by the long lines but yesterday I decided to tough it out since I had dinner across the street. Don't worry if the line appears to be about 20 -30 people deep. It moves quickly and I only waited about 15 minutes. They have limited flavors (matcha, ube, cookies and cream), only 2 swirls available weekly. Since it was my first time, I opted for cookies and cream with taiyaki. The frozen yogurt is smooth and creamy. There are topping like captain crunch cereal, sprinkles, Oreo cookies, graham crackers. And final topping of either strawberry or macaron. The ice cream and taiyaki are great, and the price right. We came here around 7:45 on a Thursday evening. There weren't any people in line but there were several people waiting inside for their taiyaki orders. It was a cold night, so we were standing inside eating our ice cream. It would be nice if there was a counter or one-two tables to sit at. We love their flavors (they only have a few but they are all good). For their takiyaki I love it with red bean, my daughter likes it with Nutella. But next time I'm going to come here and get the five pack because there's so many flavors I haven't tried. I'm super interested in what the cheddar cheese one will be like! There was an issue with the employees the last time we came here. But someone reached out to me saying they will investigate the situation. I'm glad they are taking it seriously. So I have updated this review recently. The Japanese-inspired, Korean-run dessert chain staple from So Cal is here! The hype is well deserved and this is a solid 4.5 star place, rounding down because of our less than stellar experience this time around. SomiSomi offers Ah-Boong, soft serve with Boong-Uh-Bbang/Bungeo-Ppang. What's that? That is a fish shaped pastry with fillings that's based on the original Japanese Taiyaki. So SomiSomi replaces the regular ice cream cone with the delicious gold fish shaped base, fills it with high quality soft serve, which in turn results in absolute deliciousness. The fish shaped pastry traditionally comes with custard but at SomiSomi you can choose to add Nutella, Red Beans or Taro instead. You can just have the Taiyaki without the soft serve if you so choose. Alternatively, you can have your soft serve in a cup instead. Your options for soft serve include milk, oreo, matcha and ube. There are swirls, combining two flavors, but they change often. When we went, they had the matcha oreo and ube milk, with us opting for the latter. You can then top off your masterpiece with a variety of sprinkles, oreo dust, captain crunch, graham cracker dust, strawberries, etc. Despite the large amount of people, the line moved surprisingly fast and the staff was friendly and efficient. The ube milk swirl was amazingly delicious. Amongst the best soft serve I've had, period. It wasn't overly sweet or too runny. It had bold flavors without being overpowering. It was just right. The Boong-Uh-Bbang/Bungeo-Ppang (Taiyaki) on the other hand was less than stellar. It wasn't crunchy enough and it was entirely too soggy. It was falling apart within a minute and it wasn't a hot day either. I'll consider this a fluke since I haven't seen others complain and we likely just got a bad one that didn't have enough of the mix and wasn't cooked long enough to get harder and crunchier to be able to hold the soft serve. It wasn't bad at all and it was still delicious but structurally it was disappointing. The toppings were just alright and the strawberry didn't seem all that fresh. Yikes, I've frequented SomiSomi several times and really enjoy the soft serve but had to leave this 2 star review after an incredibly rude interaction today. We had ordered the combo flavor but the employee who took our order insisted we had ordered something different. He first spoke to my younger sister ego went in alone to grab the order and came off really harsh and rude in his 1:1 interaction with her. When I went in to see what was going on, he repeated the same and the tone was unacceptable. The whole interaction was so uncomfortable that we left without taking our order and it just left us with such a bad taste. It was my first time going to this location last week and they were quite busy. But they got to me and my friends fast and our ice cream came out quick. Just the taiyaki was a bit of a wait. However I didn't mind the wait but what made me wonder is how a lot of people chose to wait inside. There was still a long line plus people waiting inside so it seemed pretty packed. I'm surprised the workers didn't inform customers to wait outside for taiyaki just so that there would be less people inside. I didn't like seeing people taking their masks off inside to eat their ice cream as they wait for their taiyaki. I can understand eating as they walk out but not while waiting especially since the maskless rule didn't happen yet. Things could've been a bit more organized like the Elk Grove location. The menu in Cupertino had more exotic flavors like UBE, Black Sesame, and Green Matcha verses at Valley Fair, they had Oreo ice cream and more generic flavors. The reason why I mentioned the above, because I was excited to share with friends about this new dessert place I found and sadly, I have to share about our experience with some of the staff here. First of all, customer satisfaction is crucial to sustain a business and also your job. So, learning to be patient and listen to what your customer is saying is priority verses your judgmental ways of assuming that someone is "dumb" because they had never tasted "Ube" or "black Sesame" flavors before. When my best friend went up to order her ice cream, she had no idea what the flavors tasted like and was asking questions to see which flavor would suit her taste. The young girl behind the cash register started rolling her eyes and getting impatient with my friend and started sighing with disgust, lol. Wow... Honey, you are just starting out. I'm sure you got a job, it's either because your parents probably want you to gain some life experience to treat people better or you sincerely just need the money. Doesn't matter which one, customer training is definitely needed in a lot of the stores within the Cupertino location. You want a professional job in the future, it starts with your attitude. We are at 2021 where it's time to branch out and learn about other cultures other than our own. I feel like everyone I talk to loves Somi Somi. Personally, I think Somi Somi is yummy, however, I can say it's a little overhyped and not as magical as everyone makes it out to be. Unsure if it's popular because of the idea of taiyaki with ice cream, or there is something I am missing. If you come here on a weekend, it's basically hell standing in line. It's usually really disorganized and hard to figure out who is waiting and who is ordering. The works don't really make it easy too as there is no one outside assisting people. (Please start assigning people to help) When I went there I was waiting with 20 other people for my ice cream. Since it's always so busy, it can be really loud and hard to hear the cashier or the workers call out your order so please be alert. Last time I went there my boyfriend was picking toppings for us but took a while deciding and the workers got irritated at us. I understand why because it's busy and they need to keep moving but some patience would have been nice, since it was only 30 seconds of waiting. Overall, would I get somi somi again? Probably if it was a slow day but besides that there are other great places to get taiyaki ice cream like Izumi Matcha in SJ. What also stood out to me was that SomiSomi sold taiyakis. I tried taiyakis for the first time a couple of months ago, and I can't get enough of those things! SomiSomi is a part of Main St. Cupertino, which basically is like the town square of Cupertino. There are plenty of trendy eateries for the avid foodie, so SomiSomi fits right in. I arrived to the storefront around 8pm on a Monday. I was very surprised by how packed the place was. The line was out the door. I didn't realize the place was that popular, and I'm not one to follow the hype. I decided to brave the line anyway and was pleased to find that the wait wasn't so bad. Despite the short wait for ordering and picking up, the place was kind of a clusterfuck. It was extremely disorganized, and the employees didn't do much to manage the flow. There wasn't really any place to sit inside SomiSomi, so I was a bit peeved that Customers who received their orders were just mingling around and socializing. This made it so difficult to hear the employees while engaging with them. When one of the employees was taking my order, I could barely make out anything she was saying. She also could hardly me and misunderstood me frequently, so I had to repeat my order several times. The other employee, who was calling out orders, desperately needed a microphone. SomiSomi has a lot of variety for a place just specializing in soft serves and taiyakis. SomiSomi offered different soft serves weekly, including swirls that mix 2 flavors. If you want just the taiyakis, SomiSomi has a deal where you can buy 2 taiyakis for $3.95 with 2 fillings or 5 taiyakis (can't recal the price) with 5 fillings. I liked that these options were available, because I like taiyakis by themselves, too, without the soft serve. This way you can try the taiyakis with the different fillings. I did see that SomiSomi has a specialty filling of red bean/cream cheese for a premium price, which I'm intrigued enough to try next time! I ordered an ah-boog (soft serve + taiyaki) consisting of custard filling inside the fish-shaped waffle, milk soft serve, and cap'n crunch topping. The soft serve was creamy, delicious, and tasted like a mild vanilla. The cap'n crunch was neatly dusted on top. I didn't really get a whole lot of flavor from it, but it added to the texture of the soft serve. The taiyaki was pretty standard - soft but chewy. You pay first. Then you have to wait for your soft serve. If the line outside goes pass the corner where Sul&Beans is located, be prepared to wait 20-30 minutes. I'm not into the Taiyaki craze but my son really wanted to try it. So that is why we went on a random Wednesday night around 8pm and yes there was a line. Waited maybe 10 minutes. They have weekly specials (which they post a week before) so they don't always do the matcha/ube mix. We got the ube/milk swirl and it includes whatever toppings you want. The toppings are very fine, they grind everything - so the graham cracker and Oreo toppings isn't huge bulky pieces. You have a choice between a macaron or a strawberry. I'm not sure what ube is suppose to taste like or if there is any taste at all, but it all just tasted like milk soft serve to me. Maybe next time I'll grab the matcha and see if that tastes better. It makes for cute pics, that's for sure. The price $5.95 is average for soft serve so it's comparable to the area but I still think it's pricy for soft serve itself. The hype is real. Sure the filled fish cone is excellent but what I really enjoyed was the consistency and texture from their soft serve. It's creamy and smooth but stiff; doesn't melt quick. It's the perfect texture and also proved a rich flavor with bold notes. The line is long but they move pretty quick. You first start by ordering the type of soft serve flavor, pick a regular cone or filled cone, and add topping at the end. The treat sort of tastes like an ice cream sandwich. Everything is finely chopped such as the Oreo being like coffee grounds, soft serve has no air holes and is soft as a baby butt, and their batter for the fish cone is almost like a waffle mix. I don't have a sweet tooth but surely enough I sometimes crave ice cream. I asked my friend where to go and she recommended me Somi Somi. I had been there before and I had red bean filling and that wasn't my taste so I was a bit hesitant to go but I thought of giving it yet another chance. Everybody deserves this much. So this week's swirl was Milk n Ube, Matcha n Sesame. I went for an upside down, milk n Ube, with Nutella filling and macron on side. Soo one of my newer Yelp friends posted a photo of a soft serve Taiyaki cone, oh excuse me, an ah-boong, and I automatically thought she was in/from SoCal. I clicked on the business and wth? It's on VALLCO pkwy? I was just at Lazy Dog on Friday!! How did I not know about this?? Just my luck I got three of my friends/coworkers to feast on dessert with me right after work. Line was just at the door early Wednesday evening and the comforting baked waffle smell wafted in my nostrils as I perused the simple menu. It's a small place with only standing room while waiting for your name to be called (before they ask what toppings you want). Korean version of a Taiyaki is an ah-boong: Fish shaped soft cone filled with your choice of filling: Nutella, custard, red bean, or taro. If you know me, it's all about Nutella. I chose matcha soft serve and while it seems like Newark's Uji Time puts much more into the cone, SomiSomi creates the smoothest ice cream with no ice crystals whatsoever. Unlimited toppings! Here's the DL: Ice cream: Matcha Ube Milk Oreo *this week's swirls: matcha Oreo & ube milk (changes every week, but I think core flavors stay the same?) They sell two or five packs of freshly made taiyakis with your choice of filling! 2 for $3.50 & 5 for $7.95. I didn't know I could mix & match flavors (try all 5 if you want!) the additional flavor you can choose is cheddar. Not sure if it's savory or sweetened. I got all Nutella before hearing the workers calling out different fillings for fulfilled orders. Warm melted Nutella in that crisp and chewy mochi Taiyaki? Oh yeah. I tried the custard one from a friend and it's not too sweet. Could you guys add a drinking water dispenser like at Meet Fresh? I almost momentarily glued my lips together with Nutella from the cone bottom. Even I was surprised since it hasn't happened before. Outdoor seating available, limited amount of tables and chairs though. For the most part, staff was nice and got the job done efficiently. I could tell they were feeling the weekday rush. The girl scooping filling, dispensing ice cream, and calling out names for orders kept asking "anything else" after each topping we requested. We could hear her from inside our car with the windows cracked open a few inches. She's overworked. Don't you love scoring a parking spot up front for a brand new dessert venue? Lucky ducks =) Btw, matcha and ube flavors aren't overly strong, just right. I tasted a bit of the milk ice cream too; I really wanted to try matcha milk swirl! Perhaps next time. read more

I've never had such icecream before, and I'm in love!! I got the vanilla, with Oreo crumbs and Nutella on the top. I loved every bite, and was left wanting for more. The softy was perfectly made, and so yum. I think I'm going to dream about it someday - cannot wait to go back. read more

Good but service is a bit chaotic and confusing. Service was relatively fast given the long line. I ordered the upside down thing. It was good, but the container it was served in was too small. Funny thing. My husband and I drove out to Cupertino Main to get Meet Fresh and while walking over we spot this place. I have seen it on instagram and it looked really different from what we normally get. We decided to skip Meet Fresh and come here instead. Although there is a huge crowd it actually goes pretty fast and we got our ah-boong - the fish waffle cone - filled with custard - and with some matcha soft serve with oreo toppings. It was very pretty and was delicious to eat. I actually really enjoyed the Taiyaki and we will be returning to get more. Plenty of parking. read more
