On a dessert-before-dinner escapade, I came by SomiSomi Wednesday at 4:45pm and easily found parking around the corner of the plaza. Walked up to the storefront, wondering if the hype still held. Lo and behold, only two people ahead of me! Score. The ordering is fairly straight forward and you have a few options to choose from, which saves most from the paradox of choice (unless you are me and want all the things). Four ice cream flavors with two rotating swirl flavors that change weekly. Ah boong (ice cream + fish pastry) right side up or upside-down (in a cup), or just ice cream in a cup. Toppings include Cocoa Krispies, Fruity Pebbles, Oreo, Captain Crunch, graham cracker, coconut flakes, or rainbow sprinkles. I opted for a matcha with red bean ah-boong + Fruity Pebbles, and the boo got matcha+milk with Nutella ah-boong. The matcha was creamy and not too sweet, although I would have liked more matcha flavor. The red bean was a great complement, and the simultaneously chewy and crispy fish pastry held up very well even as my soft serve melted. My boyfriend's Nutella interior was delicious (bc how can you go wrong with Nutella?). On a separate occasion, I got to try the taro filling, which was also delicious. The price was right for this portion, in my opinion. The $5.95 got me a filling dessert that I could probably eat as a meal in and of itself. Towards the end, the dessert seemed to get too sweet. I don't get the 4 stars. I don't get the line that's wrapped outside. I don't get it. But here we are in line for two teens who wanted it and it was a good 20mins until we got to the front on a Saturday evening. It was packed outside and inside was the same with workers trying to call for ppl by their first name but worn customers jammed in there in mid conversations and music over head, who can hear who. We got 5 of these ice cream things and I'm ready to be wow.... waiting. You order on the right side and then you have to maneuver to the left side to stand around to wait for your name to be called so they can top your order with toppings of your likings. The workers would like to yell ppl's name but even they look frustrated as ppl can't hear customers and vice versa. And with all those ppl standing around including us, it's warm just patiently standing and waiting for your name. Then you have to maneuver back to the glass counter for your toppings. Love how all these places I wanted to try in SoCal are making its way up here. I came here on a weekday, and there was no line. I got the ube and milk swirl with a custard filled taiyaki. Both were very good. The ube and milk swirl was very creamy and smooth. The flavors were not too strong, but just right. If you want a stronger flavor, I may suggest you do not get a swirl. You can add some toppings on to it without additional cost, and they top it with either a strawberry or a macaron. My favorite part was actually the taiyaki, because it is was so soft and chewy! I loved the texture, and I'm not sure if it was made with mochi, but it has that same kind of texture to it. It is a good size too. I was a bit confused about their process at first, but it's not that hard. I was just thrown off by the people spread out in the shop so I was not sure where the line began. First time here and I'm already so excited to come back again! The taiyaki (fish waffle-esque cone) was a delightful texture: tears apart easily yet holds its shape to scoop the ice cream with! I got the ice cream/taiyaki in a cup so it would be easier to eat a balance of ice cream and taiyaki. But for instagram worthy foodie pics, definitely recommend going without the cup For the ice cream, I got the ube/milk swirl. Apparently all the flavors are lactose free (except the milk one, for obvious reasons), which is pretty nice to have. If you love ube flavor like me, then this place is a must go since it's so yummy! Now I know why this place always has a long line. This stuff is AMAZING! I've never been a fan of taiyaki, so when I learned about SomiSomi, my reaction was meh. But man, did I change my mind after trying theirs. My sister had insisted that I try because of their mochi-like texture and since I love mochi things, I conceded and stood in line for 45 minutes to get me a taste of some SomiSomi. Considering how long the line was, it moved relatively quickly. SomiSomi's menu offers soft serve, taiyaki (or in Korean, bungeo-ppang), and "ah boong" (the taiyaki with soft serve). I ordered myself ah boong with milk soft serve in a cup, while my husband ordered the regular ah boong with matcha soft serve (no cup). You get your choice of cereal toppings and the option of a strawberry or macaron shell on top. The milk soft serve was great! It had a lovely delicate milk taste and the texture was creamy, but not too rich. Because the milk flavor is so delicate, I wouldn't recommend it in a swirl flavor because it gets overwhelmed. My sister said she could only taste the matcha in her matcha/milk swirl. The matcha soft serve was great on its own though. It had good matcha flavor and wasn't too sweet. The taiyaki was the best part for me! If you're a fan of Brazilian cheese bread, then you'll find the texture similar. I'm pretty sure they use tapioca flour for the taiyaki, not mochi. Crispy and flaky outside, but chewy on the inside. I LOVE IT. I actually wished I had more taiyaki instead of soft serve, and thanks to their taiyaki menu, that wish was granted. I got the taiyaki with cheese filling, which was absolutely delicious. It felt like I was eating Brazilian cheese bread, but it was more crispy and cheesy. That chewy pastry paired with the gooey pull of the cheddar cheese was super satisfying. TIP: I recommend getting the ah boong in a cup. The taiyaki sits on top of the soft serve in the cup, so you can eat the taiyaki earlier while it's still warm, crispy, and chewy. If you get it without the cup, the taiyaki is underneath the soft serve, which makes you eat it later and cools it down, so you lose some of that wonderful texture. SOOOOOO addictive. I don't know what it is about SomiSomi that makes me keep coming back. It may be the fact that their ice cream is dairy free (except for the Milk flavor)! This is great for those of us who love ice cream, but not the tummy pains that come with lactose intolerance. Sure the taiyaki and all the fix-in toppings makes it super 'Gram-able, but I think what really keeps me coming back is the fact that the overall treat isn't THAT sweet to the point of making me super thirsty or sick after eating the whole thing, even though I practically inhale it because it melts so fast. Fully enjoyed how fun and tasty my experience was with SomiSomi. My boyfriend and I went on a Friday night around 6:45pm. There are some 45 degree parking spots in this plaza, its an apartment complex area, but finding an open spot is tricky during peak hours. There is a parking garage right after Sweet Moments that you can park at also. My bf found a spot on the main road and the walk was easy, just around the corner. When we arrived, the line was out the door by about 20 people in front of us. We probably waited about 15-20 minutes, it wasn't that bad with my bf with me :) Ordering was pretty straightforward, however, I would recommend that they place the cup/fish option as a first step then the ice cream and custards. My boyfriend and I were stuffed from lunch, so we decided to order an ah-boong in a fish with their weekly swirl of matcha and oreo. I added sprinkles and a strawberry. Surprisingly, the matcha and oreo weren't that bad together. I wanted matcha and the bf wanted oreo, so that week's swirl was perfect for us to share. Love that the flavors weren't too strong and not too sweet. Waiting for the ah-boong probably took 2 minutes, the taiyaki is what takes long as they make them ready to order, probably 10 minutes for 5. Their custard is a bit on the thick side, reminds me of the american vanilla pudding mix that you get in the grocery stores. Personally, I would pass on the custard. Red bean and taro were a hit in terms of filling though! I randomly came across this place on Yelp and noticed that it's a fairly new dessert place at Main St. Apparently this place is from SoCal because my family is "already over the hype"...why does everything come last to the Bay Area?! *sigh* We decided to check it out one weeknight but the wait was super crazy long! (so we ended up at Meet Fresh instead since we had to head home in time for baby's bedtime) The second time we went was a Monday afternoon - wait was much shorter and we finally got to try it! I came to Somisomi on a Saturday afternoon around 4 PM. I had to wait around 20 minutes total to order and receive my order. I was able to try the Matcha soft serve with Taiyaki w/ nutella along with a strawberry and fruity pebbles as the topping. Their Matcha soft serve is pretty good, probably one of the better ones I've tried. What actually made a huge difference in my opinion was their Taiyaki. You could tell it was made fresh because the outside texture was crunchy, and the inside was soft. I wasn't really able to taste the fruity pebble topping, so next time I would want to try a different topping. But overall, the main ingredients which is their Taiyaki and Soft serve were exquisite. Another new establishment in Main Street Cupertino (because apparently Cupertino in general is where everything is happening now), SomiSomi was one of those upcoming places that people were keeping an eye on. It was by sheer luck that my brother and I decided on an impulse to visit during the last day of their grand opening event and take advantage of their "buy 1 ah-boong and get 1 taiyaki free" deal. XD Described as "Irvine-esque" by a person standing behind us, this location is the newest branch of a brand that sells both the iconic, Japanese, carp-shaped cake with fillings as well as what basically amounts to soft serve in a fish-shaped waffle cone. Later, when I looked this place up, I was surprised at the accuracy of the comment. It was pretty obvious that this was a SoCal place, and does in fact have two Irvine locations. Additionally, I'm excited to see that they're planning to establish another location in Westfield Valley Fair Mall. Because clearly that Santana Row/Valley Fair area needs MORE trendy places. In the meantime, THIS SomiSomi is located in Main Street Cupertino, a shopping/community area with restaurants, stores, offices, apartments, a hotel, and an open square. They have street parking throughout the inner part of the complex as well as a larger garage towards the back of the area. Just turn down the road to the right of the Pieology on the corner (which is across the street from Lazy Dog), and it'll be to your right. It's usually busier in the evenings, but ESPECIALLY so on the weekends, as it remains a pretty popular hang-out spot and area to walk dogs. With this taiyaki and ice cream location, I would also say that one of the easiest/closest places to park and get there is to use the Nineteen800 outer parking area. The Nineteen800 complex (the building with Kura Sushi, the Beer Garden, and Doppio Zero) has an outside border of parking spaces that are not entirely cut off from Main Street. Specifically, the southeast corner spaces are very convenient and go right to Meet Fresh, aka. very close to SomiSomi. So besides their selection of taiyaki, they also have their "ah-boong", a Korean dessert using the same waffle(?) batter with a layer of choice filling and then a swirl of "Korean-inspired soft serve". To be fair, after trying the ah-boong, the texture of the soft serve IS actually noticeably different to me, and I quite like it. My brother had looked up their website beforehand and was slightly disappointed that they didn't have the same breadth of variety as shown on their site. Indeed, right now they seem to be a bit limited. If you wanted a swirl of two different flavors, for example, they only seem to have two choices at a time. For us, it had been milk and matcha or ube and oreo, but they seem to switch out every week. They do make up for it with the all-you-want free toppings though! Not to mention that the free ube taiyaki they were giving out was delicious, and I look forward to trying out more flavors. And for both, we really, really liked the simultaneous crispiness and chewiness of the cake. Overall, it's a pretty novel thing. I haven't had an ice cream taiyaki since a trip abroad, and it's great to now have a store for it in the local area. Always appreciate expanding on our options for desserts. My brother made a good point that, if they had opened during the summer, the line would curve all the way to Meet Fresh. As it is, when we went, it was around 9:30 on a Sunday night, very cold, and the line still curved out and around the building. On the other hand, kudos for their consideration and knowledge of their audience. A number of friends and family with varying degrees of lactose intolerance were excited about the lactose-free aspect. I appreciate them specifying that, as that means while the friends who have more severe lactose intolerance reactions should be fine, I'm aware that I should avoid bringing people with milk allergies here. I've heard of SomiSomi from my friends down in LA and I was excited when I heard that there was one opening up in the bay! Obviously I wasn't the only excited one, so there was a long line waiting when I went. It was kind of a slow line, but it's bearable if you have a buddy and if the weather is nice at least. I've never had a taiyaki before, but I can't believe I've been missing out for so long! Their taiyaki was the perfect chewy texture, it kind of reminded me of a mochi donut. It was also really lightweight feeling which I enjoyed. The soft serve was also delicious! I wish that they had more flavors, as they only had Ube, Oreo, Milk, and Matcha. So, my sis and bro had me check out this ridiculously long line for some soft serve ice cream. It wasn't overly sweet which was good, but the flavor wasn't intense or satisfying enough for me to come back, or tell my friends about it. The taiyaki waffle cone was also soft and it couldn't hold my ice cream after a few mins. Once I finished the ice cream I was too full to eat the taiyaki waffle. It was too heavy and I was not a fan of it. It would make more sense for it to be in a waffle cone that was crunchy or had a different texture than the ice cream. I don't know what the fuss is about. The hype is not real. I prefer gelato and thick ice cream that has intense flavor and Somi Somi did not meet my expectation. I know it wasn't great ice cream bc the rest of my family were switching flavors to see if we like the other one better. My complaint is I'm paying close to $6 for one single flavor, or mix with a soft filled waffle cone. It's a steep price since I get half a strawberry or macaron. Then they ask you what topping you want, you can only select one. I mean seriously I'm paying $6 for 1 flavor and 1 topping is really outrageous. The toppings include: sprinkles, fruit loops, Oreo crumbs, Captain Crunch, etc. My nephew wanted fruit loops and sprinkles. They told him to pick one topping and you can't even pay extra. That really annoyed me, that you cannot even cater to a kid who wants 2 toppings on an ice cream and to shut him down. Dumbest business idea. The portion size is actually a good size/amount. Bigger than I thought. Totally worth the price. The ice cream isn't super sweet. Soft, melts kinda fast. Oh my jeebus, When my girlfriend told me that the line for the new SomiSomi was going to be long, I didn't expect it to be on the level of 7 Leaves for instance. SomiSomi has only been open for like a month or two, and it's already attracted hordes of customers. This little dessert shop is famous for their Taiyaki, a breaded and crispy fish-shaped pastry. You might have seen it all over Japan, as that's where it originates from, and SomiSomi delivers it straight to the Bay. The best time to have a shot at waiting less than a half hour is during the weekdays. My girlfriend and I stopped by on Sunday at around 3pm and we waited nearly 40 minutes in line. Now it was definitely a hotter-than-average day in the Spring but holy cow. At SomiSomi, you can either order just their Taiyaki with a few choices of filling (e.g custard), or add ice cream and make it an Ah Boong. Though they only had a few flavors (Milk, Matcha, Ube, and Oreo + weekly mixes and matches), the strength of this place is in the Taiyaki itself. Overall, you're gonna pay about $4 per Taiyaki (you can buy a box too) and $6 if you want ice cream on it. Getting an Ah Boong also gets you some toppings but tbh just stick with strawberry. My girlfriend got the Milk and Matcha Ah Boong and I ordered the Ube and Oreo. Not gonna lie, the best part of SomiSomi was HANDS DOWN the fish cake. The ice cream itself was soft-serve goodness but nothing worth waiting almost an hour for. But dang the Taiyaki was pretty amazing. It was crispy and it added the perfect contrast to the soft ice cream. Only thing missing was that if it were hotter it'd be heaven. As for the soft-serve, I really thought the Ube was underwhelming as it wasn't flavorful. For my girlfriend's on the other hand, the matcha was good! Of all the flavors, that was the best. Solid ice cream, but honestly nothing super special. I've been here a few times now and nothing has stood out to me in particular. Nevertheless, the ice cream is good and I like that there are a lot of customizations in terms of toppings and fillings if you're getting the taiyaki as well. There's new flavors often and I'd like to think there's always something for everyone although the variety is extremely limited. The line is usually kind of long but it goes by fast. It's a bit disorganized in terms of calling out orders but I think that's because of how small and limiting the space is. SomiSomi is a sweet treat that's worth the wait. Don't be discouraged by the line--it moves fairly quickly. Love the matcha/oreo swirl with the Nutella or custard taiyaki. It's a little hectic in the actual storefront because people are waiting for their orders or figuring out what to order. I'd suggest the soft serve in a cup with the taiyaki on top rather than the soft serve in the fish, unless you can eat it fast enough to avoid it dripping down your hand (and a brain freeze). Who gets ice cream in the cold? Us. I love everything about this spot. The price is right and the creamy soft serve is perfect. I went back there about 5 times since it opened and damn, this place is so good. It has a great option of putting the soft serve in the cup and taiyaki on top to avoid messiness and still able to enjoy the taiyaki. I'm so glad there's now a SomiSomi located in the Bay! Love their ah-boong (ice cream- boonguh bbang) you cant go wrong with their matcha flavor! I noticed this location also has an Oreo flavor. If you want a combo of flavors, it varies week to week. But at least they tell you what combo is available for the following week. You have a variety of choices of filling within the taiyaki itself from: -cheese -custard (my personal favorite) -red bean -Nutella Came here on a cold night and there was a short line but a continuous stream of customers. On nights like this I would have just ordered the taiyaki without softserve but bc it's been so long I got the matcha softserve in a custard filled taiyaki sprinkled with graham cracker crumbs. The ice cream was so milky and not too sweet. You get unlimited toppings so I chose Oreos and fruity pebbles. At first I thought it was strange that they had fruity pebbles but it actually tasted so good. The taiyaki was piping hot and was SO good. It had a crispy exterior and mochi like interior with delicious raro filling. I think next time if I didn't want too much dessert I would just order that instead of the ahboong. I'd say it was better than the one I had in Japan. I'm just gonna say that the 5 star review is solely for the food. The staff working there was a bit awkward and unwelcoming. My friends and I came here Sunday around 5/6 and we had to wait about 15-20 minutes in the line. Even though the actually store is very small the 4-5 workers were very efficient and quick with serving everyone. They offer four different types of flavors for the soft serve ice cream which are; Milk, Oreo, Matcha, or Ube. They also have different swirl flavors of the week and we came when it was Ube+Matcha & Milk+Oreo. You can choose either to get a AH-BOONG or just the soft serve ice cream by itself. If you order a Ah-Boong you get to choose a filling for your Taiyaki which was Nutella, Custard, Red Bean, or Taro. And your also get free topping to get on your ice cream. I recommend to get the AH-BOONG in a cup upside down because it is a very heavy dessert! They also offer you a strawberry or tiny macaron! Overall, I really enjoyed this spot. I knew I had to try this place out after hearing about it so much & it did not disappoint! I tried the milk soft serve with nutella filling, topped with sprinkles and a macaron! I had never tried taiyaki or ah-boong before, and I really liked it! I will say though, it was a bit too sweet for me [I'll probably try a different combination next time]. There isn't space to sit in the store itself, but they do have a cute corner wall for photos!
