Delicious Vietnamese soup noodle. Everyone knows about pho and bun bo hue, Son Kieu offers lesser known Vietnamese cuisine that is just as good. I asked the waitress for recommendations. She said #1 is really popular, but cautioned that the dish is an acquired taste for people unfamiliar with the dish. My mom recommended #15 to me and which is their Hủ Tíu Mực Sửa. It's a delicious noodle soup dish that comes with many different protein offering which include squid, fried pork skin, meat balls, and fish cakes. The bowl of noodle also comes with some hot sauce. This bowl hit the spot just right on a winter day. The service was great. The restaurant isn't very big, the noise level isn't loud. There is plenty of parking outside. I'll def be back to try more of the menu.

Ok, I've tried and ventured my way around Little Saigon sampling different bun bo hue (Vietnamese spicy lemongrass beef noodle soup) and bun mam (fermented seafood noodle soup) since those are two of my favorite dishes. This place lands into my top three of spots. So it's located in the corner of the plaza next to a clothing store and a another restaurant. Store had ample amount of seating. Upon sitting, there's all the original accruements that should be on a table; mam rước (fermented shrimp paste), sate (lemongrass chili oil), fresh chopped chili, sugar, black pepper, nước mam (fish sauce), and I believe soy sauce. I really appreciate having these out on the table already Verus having to ask every time. EXTRA spotlight to the fact that they cook the shrimp paste into a very flavor variation that has lemongrass and I believe garlic which added so much more flavor and depth. Now to the food, their bun mam was phenomenal. May I say one of my favorite... flavor had so much umami and depth of the fermented fish and sweetness of a long cooked broth. It was filled with toasted crispy pork belly, homemade fish cakes, FRESH squid, and fresh cat fish filets (bone in as that is traditional). I was so impressed with the variety of toppings and then the vegetable platter was fitting. They included the OG of herbs including the bitter leaf which not all places include. Vegetables platter was fresh. Soup came out piping hot. Delicious as can be. Also want to say that their squid tastes incredibly fresh and they make a cha out of it and have it in the soup. They also offer another dish that is silently focused on squid and will try another time. Second time I came for the bun Bo hue and wow another heavy hitter. The soup was so well balanced with the earthy notes of the lemongrass with a subtle but umami kick of mam rước (fermented shrimp paste), and some sweetness from the bones they cooked down with it and definitely some rock sugar. The flavors were all very well balanced and didn't require too much additional seasoning but I will always add extra mam rước once vegetables are in and dilute the flavor of the broth, the bun Bo hue was well topped with all the usual suspects of pork hock, pork blood cubes, beef shank slices, homemade meat patty.Not too much spice but that's why you can add your flare to it and customize with all the fresh date and chili they have. Overall, food is absolutely fantastic and has a lot of heart to it. Service is ok and your average. They accept Apple Pay! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Very flavorful food and worth the price.

Rainy day this morning made me crave some bun mam! Came to Son Kieu to try it out. During the Covid lock down I had bought some bun mam from her via fb before and it was a bit on the sweeter side so I didn't buy again. Today, I figured I'd give it another try since it was close to where I was and I was craving bun mam:) Hubby and I both ordered the bun mam. Pros : Bun mam was on point today, not too sweet and definitely not too fishy. Flavor was rich with umami and seafood was fresh. Veggies were plentiful. When waitress has a moment to address ur needs or concerns they were very nice and accommodating... I came during lunch so it was busy so I had to be patient with staff. Service was expected for peak lunch time. Don't have anything bad to say about it but nothing amazing stood out either. Restaurant is small and quaint. Cons: Maybe I ordered wrong cause my bun mam bd no heo quay, no meat, and that's one of my favorite proteins in a bun mam dish. So next time when I come back I would ask about the heo quay and see if they have option to add that. Hubby was happy and says we will come back in the future! Hubby approved

There's two locations. The newer location is near Brookhurst and Westminster, where Pho Quang Trung used to be at. The parking is kind of bad, but the food is excellent. Son Kieu is known for their bun nam, a dish that I can't eat because of smell. Way too strong for me to handle. Known for food from mien tay, or western part of Vietnam, there's a huge Khmer influence in the cuisine. But I found canh bun or bun rieu, a northern Vietnamese dish, to be extremely good here. I mean, it's now my to go place for canh bun or bun rieu. It's so good, especially with the fresh red chili peppers. Be warned, it's very spicy. The canh bun's broth was so good. And there's plenty of shrimp balls and tofu for me to be full. Yummy! I highly recommend this place. For Thinsulin fans, there's not may green light options here.

Good blend of savory and sour flavors, you can taste the lemongrass coming through. Personally not a fan of the meatballs with full beads of black pepper embedded. The place itself is small and gets packed fast, come during off times or you may need to wait.

Whenever I'm craving something stinky or just in the mood for some good ol' bun mam, Son Kieu is my go-to spot. I always get the Bun Mam and Bun Dau Mam Tom, and both dishes hit the spot with their bold, pungent flavors. The Bun Mam had that perfect blend of fermented fishiness, paired with a rich, flavorful mam broth (sometimes it's a bit sweet so add some of that tamarind sauce), while the Bun Dau Mam Tom was loaded with crispy tofu, fresh herbs, and that strong shrimp paste kick I crave. The restaurant itself is a bit on the smaller side, and it tends to get pretty busy, especially during lunch and dinner hours, so expect a bit of a wait. But if you're looking for authentic, unapologetically stinky Vietnamese food, Son Kieu is worth it! Price is also decent.

My family and I went to Son Kieu without much knowledge of what the dishes were! We were curious to try new, not as popular, dishes. Upon being seated, we asked the waiter for her recommendations and she was very friendly! Overall the dishes were very light and flavorful. It specializes in a soup with fermented shrimp paste, and smelled great. All of the broths were warm, and the meat was tender. The portion sizes were also generous for $15. Being a smaller shop, it can get crowded fairly quickly. Overall, not bad and I would recommend if you want to try different Vietnamese dishes!

Place was jammed pack during lunch hours. Be advised as this place is quite cozy with around of 8 tables. Ordered Bun Rieu dac biet as I haven't seen any reviews on yelp. Score 4/5 They do it a bit different here as the blood block is quite larger in size than typical other spots. Two pieces of fried tofu and somewhat of a white rectangular firm tofu that has an infused peppercorn taste to it. There are two different types of crab/fish paste balls. 1 is quite light and the second has more peppercorns infused in it. The broth is quite nice and you can certainly add shrimp paste to elevate the flavors. They don't do the minced crab style as their rendition is quite different in a good way. 14.99 for a bowl is justified.

Decent place for Bánh canh and bún nắm. Quick service. Like most Vietnamese places, you don't come here expect tip notch customwr service. Bún nắm was decent, has nắm flavor but not too overwhelming. All required ingredients are there: fish filet, pork belly, eggplants, squid, shrimp, rau chuối, etc. The eggplants was hard, not my favorite in this dish. But overall, it's good. Good Bánh canh and mì quãng. Mì quãng has the soup in separated bowl. This is great, some people like soup in mì quãng. Some might like it less.

I don't recommend this place for everyone. The food tastes so bad. So salty and the ingredients are not new. I got headaches and throw up after eaten in here. While I'm eating there was a lot of fly inside the restaurant. I complained with the boss, she said that's how the restaurant work. This is the way she run her business. Food, stuff and ingredients. Came here for the first time & i was really satisfied! They said that bun bo hue, mi quang, and bun mam were the most popular for the main food. I don't understand the five stars given by yelpers here. I ordered Bun Mam and Bun Dau Mam Tom. The fish in Bun Mam was raw. The soup was sweet. Nothing great about it. Mam Tom- pork was dried. You could tell it's been sitting out for hours. Same to the noodles. Overall it was a huge disappointment and waste of money. 1st time here, had to listen to the owners bragging to a customer about remodeling her RV that cost her 10k. Didn't take my order after I called her multiple times. Finally took my order after the customer left. I order bun rieu and Banh it ram. Banh it ram is not available but it's on the wall n in the menu. My bun rieu came out. Very disappointed 2 pieces of tofu, 2 pieces pork blood, 1 square piece of crab and 1 large tomato. No bun rieu flavor. Crab piece very sour. Wouldn't recommend this place. Mediocre food with small portion and high price ($14 for a bowl of bun mam). They even charge you 50 cent for Iced Water EVEN THO THEY DONT STATE THAT IN THEIR MENU, so we had to pay $3 for just some water. If they have stated that water is going to be charged, we would have been fine with the food. read more

We've came here for a few times but I guess today's visit would be the last. 2 of my friends ordered bún bò and mì quảng. They found a scan label in their bún bò and a strand of hair in mì quảng. The situation would be more well-handled if the owner apologizes at first but she wasn't. She brought it up like a joke that "oh I think I must have my female employees wear hair net from now on." Great to eat at a restaurant with the owner coming out to see the food is and how they can change it to make it better. Overall my wife and I have been to this place about 4 times now . Bun Mam has a Saigon taste with lots of veggies to eat with. I ordered the hot pot style that fit my family of 4. To-go dishes were carefully packed. I even saved some broth to eat later because the owner packed kinda generous for me. Also tried Muc Nuong, the hot sauce is bomb. Just dip a bit and you could feel a different level of flavor. Definitely try it if you can tolerate the heat (don't compare with Siracha) read more

Best bun dau, bun mam, bun bo in town. The owner is very nice and take good care of her customers. She makes every dishes from the bottom of her heart, you can feel it for sure. The beef was soft and tender, the fries were nice and crispy and the fried rice was fresh. You 100% need to get the Thai Tea. A lot of place add too much cream/half and half diluting the tea flavor, they do not skimp on the actual tea in their drink. The color speaks for itself on the dark orange hue!

I would give them another try. Maybe for their noodle soup dishes.

had nok's saved for years now and finally got to try it the other night. the restaurant is a casual…read morespot and on a friday evening it was pretty packed, but wait was 5 minutes max still. service was also extremely welcoming and nice and super helpful for our first time. as for the food and drinks, everything was so good. we definitely ordered a lot for just the two of us, but it was so hard not to want to try everything on the menu. to start we got their larb salmon with medium spice, and warning their medium spice is actually pretty spicy (which i love), but it was such a refreshing savory dish; i just wish it came with the prawn chips like shown in the menu pictures. we also got their rotti curry which was good as well, the rotti didn't taste like cooking oil, which a lot of places do, and it was super crispy and went well with the seasoned curry but the curry is a little more watery than other traditional curries. our server also recommended the fried pork cheek, which was on a secret menu, showed us a picture too on his phone which helped and they did not disappoint. super tender, fatty pieces of meat that paired well the accompanying sauce. as for entrees, i got the khao piak, which they unfortunately use udon noodles here, but broth was super flavorful and chicken was super tender still (i do just enjoy the traditional khao piak noodles more than udon however). my boyfriend ordered their bbq mix combo which came with an assortment of different grilled meats, sticky rice, and different sauces and all the meats were smokey and tender and we really enjoyed the green sauce with it. as for desserts, everything was delicious as well. mangoes were ripe and sweet and the coconut ice cream went really well with the pandan sticky rice and mangoes. i would love to come back again

Seriously, folks, tap water would be the life of the party compared to this snoozefest in a bowl. Now, moving on to the Bánh khọt debacle. Imagine a cloning experiment gone wrong but with shrimp. It's as if the chef hit the "Copy All" button and then wandered off for a smoke break, leaving the printer to churn out an army of identically bland crustaceans. It's like an episode of "Black Mirror," but you know, with shrimp. Ah, but here comes the pièce de résistance, the Bun Mam. Or should I say, the pièce de "resist, please don't eat me because I have zero flavor." This dish had all the excitement of a tax audit. I have had the opportunity to dine at "Son Kieu" several times, but I haven't had a chance to leave a review until now. Today, I decided to revisit the restaurant because I heard they introduced a new and exciting drink called "Trà Mãng Cầu - Custard Apple tea," which is currently trending in Vietnam. Unfortunately, they were out of stock during my visit, so I'll have to come back another time to try it. As for the food, I ordered the Bún Quậy Phú Quốc, while my friend opted for the Mì Quảng. The vermicelli in the Bún Quay had a slightly odd texture today, as if it had been overcooked and was too tender. However, my friend thoroughly enjoyed the Mì Quang and found it to be delicious. It seems that the restaurant's cooking consistency can vary. On some occasions, the food is excellent, while on others, it falls short. I'm not certain if it's due to the chef or other factors, but I hope they can find a way to maintain consistent quality. If you happen to have a disappointing experience, I encourage you to give them a second chance. I believe it won't be as bad as you might think. I am giving them a three-star rating today primarily because my noodle soup wasn't up to its usual standard. However, I remain hopeful that my next visit will be better. The restaurant itself is relatively small and tends to get crowded during peak hours, so I visited today around 5:30 pm to avoid the rush. Unbelievable experience at Son Kieu. I was still eating--hadn't even finished half my bowl--and just stood up for a second to pay. My phone, keys, and personal stuff were clearly still on the table. But while I was gone for just a moment, the staff came and cleared my bowl without asking, like I had left! I had to eat alone, and even though I tipped 22% in cash, they treated me like I didn't matter. No apology, no respect--just rushed and rude behavior. I was shocked and honestly angry. I was there for lunch and had the Bun Mam. Service was quick and the size portion is quite generous. This soup dish was colorful and a roller coaster of different flavors.
