If I could leave half a star I would! This is not a decent establishment and should not be considered a restaurant because you go to a restaurant to be served food. The "food" at this place is not good and the meat is either always over cooked as well as flavorless. I must refrain from criticizing the manager because I do not feel that he is old enough to be criticized publicly. It took 30 minutes to be seated with a near empty dining area and then another hour to receive our food. Please feel free to look at other reviews as this is not my typical review. Though I love the food, this location is nothing but disappointment, aside from the servers. The last time I came to this location, my first drink glass had lipstick marks ALL over our, and the second had a spider in it. This time around, the sweet sauce actually had the spicy in the bottle, they did not care/weren't worried. I was going to give it a 2 because the food is just that good, but dropped it to one due to the flat surface between the booths being dusty and the handicap stall door not being able to close. read more

We have dined here on a regular basis throughout the pandemic, everything from curbside to dinning in as it opened back up. Regardless of the situation, they have always been committed to making sure they are providing quality food, service and safety. The wait staff is amazing with their warm and friendly personality and in the rare occasion that something is wrong, they do not hesitate to get it corrected. Terrible experience today, I have been a customer of this sonny's for years and had good service until today. Called ahead to let them know there would be a group coming at 11:00 am. ant things looked good as the table was setup and clean. Then everything started to go south. Waitress took our drink order and came back and asked us to pass out our drinks. Then she took our food order bouncing around the table to whoever was ready to order. No silverware or napkin's at first but she did bring them. One napkin per person, when requested she did brink more napkins. We had no condiments on the table, no salt, peppER, bbq sauce etc. When the food came waitress had no idea who had ordered any of the meals. The customers had to look at several of the meals and pass them around the table to find where they belonged, this ment several hands had to touch the food plates. Once the food was distribute we waited for our condiments which did not arrive in a timely manner, finally we found the waitresses to again request condiments. Gathering what she could from I know not ware as there only seemed to be bottles on other tables. Once the condiments arrived several of the meals were no longer hot and the cinnamon butter was not available for the sweet potatoes so they gave diners a small cup with powdered cinnamon to mix with cold packets of butter. I contacted the manager and asked him to please apologize to our group as the service was really not up to standards. He did not apologize just asked if anybody wanted anything else. read more

So I ordered a smoked turkey for the first time from Sonny's on San Jose Blvd. for Thanksgiving dinner for my family and several guests that we are having over for dinner! The "turkey" was wrapped in foil and placed in a box. When I just opened the foil just to make sure all looks good before placing in the oven I realized I was given ham and not turkey! We don't even eat ham on regular bases so this is very disappointing! The restaurant is closed today of course so no way to ask for a replacement! I am now forced to serve unplanned HAM to my guests! What happened to this location? The remodel looks sleek and modern, although reminiscent of Arby's interior. The experience, however, not so fleek. Long wait to be seated with every employee walking by saying someone would be right with us. They didn't seem to realize one of them needed to be that 'someone'. Although not the restaurants fault per se, we were seated between a table of wailing children on one side and senior citizens with laughs that of a bucking jackass on the other. Once the waiter finally made an appearance, the two of us placed our beverage, appetizer, and entrée orders. He did a great job with the drinks and then m u c h later a food runner brought the entrée. Once we had finished eating the dry chunky pork sandwiches with watered-down baked beans, the appetizer arrived sans dipping sauce. When the waiter discovered this he did proactively remove it from the check, although it took 15 minutes to process said check. We packed up our appetizer and accepted refills to-go, dejectedly leaving faster than we arrived. Sometimes restaurants have a bad night even though a majority of the bbq menu is already cooked or management sabotages service with inadequate staffing; either way, with other choices like 4 Rivers, I will be hard pressed to return anytime soon. read more

I've been a fan of Sonny's for a while now. Recently they seem have made some changes to portion size and quality - and that goes for all locations. This particular location has decent service compared to a few others we've visited and thanks to the refresh inside is quite enjoyable. As for the food - if you get pork ask for the center cut - you get more meat and less fat. The redneck eggrolls are delicious and a must have - trust me on this one - the entire family loves them. There ribs are hit or miss. Sometimes they are a bit dried out and other times they are cooked perfectly. Overall, it's a good spot for a quick dinner with decent service. read more

We are in Florida visiting so we stopped into this barbecue spot called Sonny's. It appears to be a chain restaurant with a down-home feel. The service was really friendly and our food came out so quick. We decided to have the endless ribs with two sides. We were surprised not only where the ribs endless but you could also get other meats like smoked turkey or pork. Endless which included macaroni and cheese, corn on the cob, yam, fried pickles, fried okra, baked beans, french fries and coleslaw! The coronas were ice-cold and they have a really good-looking salad bar which I'll try next time. Very very happy with Sonny's!! read more

Definitely one of my favorite places to get BBQ !! The staff is always super sweet and the food + sweet tea is usually a 10/10. So my brother, dad, and I were running a few quick errands and thought we would grab a quick bite to eat. We have a local Sonny's around Orange Park but thought we would visit a different one for a change. We were sat immediately and our server, Garrett took our order. I got sweet tea and it was very bland but he apologized and brought it back thoroughly sweetened. Then he brought out our food. AYCE. Need I say more? Sonny's regular menu has all-you-can-eat options that includes: dry rub ribs, saucy ribs, pulled pork, and chicken. Occasionally, they run promotions for AYCE at a discounted price. The stars aligned this week and I made my voyage to Sonny's to get my bbq fill. Sonny's BBQ really takes me back to my college days. Sonny's first started in Gainesville and the original location is still on Waldo, I believe. These thoughts ruminate as eat my ribs, lol (sighs fondly). The great thing about ordering the ayce plate is you get 2 sides and a bread. There are about 6 sides to choose from and you can pick either garlic bread or cornbread. In the end, it doesn't matter what you start with because you can switch out the sides and the breads. woot woot! Additionally, if you can tired of the ribs, you can switch out for another meat. It has to be a lower ayce menu item though. So, if you order the ribs which is the most expensive ayce option, you can also get pulled pork or chicken later. Sonny's also have Sweet, Mild, Sizzling Sweet, and Mustard BBQ sauce at the tables. Honestly, I think this bbq is good, especially for the price. It could be the familiarity of the taste, but it satiates me. I have eaten a ton of bbq and I have had bbq from notable places in Texas, Tenneseee, the Carolinas, and Georgia. Taste is subjective I guess. I recommend signing up for their newsletter. They notify you of promotions and give you coupons also. I think you get a free bbq sandwich on your bday. Let me start off by saying I'm clearly not a local from Jacksonville. So I'm writing this with out-of-towner taste buds. However, i do know and am a fan of good BBQ. Oh and consider this more of a 2 1/2 star review. Don't come in here expecting good old fashioned country BBQ like your Uncle makes at the family reunion and you'll be fine. This isn't even the quality of a really good take out place on the side of the road. But take Sonny's for what it's worth. It's decent food. The salad bar looked pretty sketchy to me and I wasn't satisfied with the menu options but the service is good, they have beer, and pretty good prices--which made my experience enjoyable. The selection of bbq sauces made everything taste a bit better. But it ain't a down home, make you wanna slap yo mama experience in the least bit. read more

I will never eat here again. For my son's birthday, we ate at this Sonny's as per his request. The food was decent as always, and the immediate service (seater, waitress, etc.) were up to par at least. However, the following event will forever prevent me from eating at this location, or any other location owned by their general manager, Patty Bannon (spelling?). As soon as we were finished with our food and walking to the counter to pay, an elderly woman began to have a seizure. Wither her family members (maybe 3 or 4) and the staff in proximity this caused a commotion. I heard someone say she was in her 80s and a diabetic. I send my wife and kids to the car as this was obviously more important than my need to pay and I wanted to get out of the way until things settled. The Good: I watched as a couple of employees who apparently had a background in the medical field handle the situation. They were immediately helping the lady while another looked for items requested (gloves, water, etc.). Yet another young lady promptly relayed directions between a 911 operator and the employee helping the lady. As sad as a moment like this could have been, I was appreciative that these staff members were doing all they could to help. The Disgusting: I am sitting now directly between the elderly woman and her family, and the cooks in the back. One of the cooks yells loud enough for myself and the woman's family to hear "our cookin' is so good, it makes old ladies seize up." I certainly wasn't the only person that heard this, as a couple of the employees reacted. I hope that the woman's family did not hear this because I can't even imagine how that would have made someone feel. The woman stopped breathing about 3 or 4 minutes before the ambulance even arrived, and after I finally paid they had not left the parking lot. This is a pretty bad sign. To hear such a statement made while a woman is dying surrounded by her family is of the lowest kind of disrespect for human life. These are the same people that prepare my food, and I want nothing to do with them. Nor do I want to give my money or patronage to an organization that would condone such an action. read more

Service is good but the quality of the sliced pork is very poor. I'd say there is over 50 - 60% fat compared to the actual meet you get with them. Flavor is good when you take off the fat. I'm originally from Gainesville and the quality of the meet at the different Sonnys there seems to be much better. 12-18-17 Update Got the pork 3 ways and the meat quality was significantly improved from last review. Sliced pork was lean, tender, and flavorful. Ribs were meaty and juicy. Hopefully future visits have the same quality. read more

Had them cater parties at my home, etc. always said they had the best BBQ chicken in Jacksonville, no more, something has happened to the waY they prepare tHe chicken. Maybe I was hungry or maybe the food was really good but whatever they did it was completely spot on for my brother in laws birthday. The corn nuggets were crispy, hot and fresh! The redneck rolls were so good I had never thought to put BBQ pulled pork in an egg roll. The family feat for 4 times 2 was soo hot and fresh that we were all pleasantly surprised. The ribs were the kind where you had to lick your fingers, the chicken breasts were juicy and the pork was tender! The beans were saucy, fries were crispy and Mac and cheese was creamy! The cornbread was also amazing! Sweet, soft and full of corn! Our server was very attentive and got all of our special requests done right! To top it off she provided us with to go drinks and we were able to use a $5 off from a competitor because this location takes competitor coupons! Woohoo win win all around. Prices are pretty fair ranging about $10 per person and the food was good. Pretty tasty for a chain. If sonnys can keep up the BBQ this consistently then our family will sure be back. read more

This is a nice little spot for lunch and will fill your craving for BBQ and fixins. When we came there was hardly anyone here. The waiter was nice and attentive. The food is already cooked so you get your food pretty quickly. They have different sauces on the table you can choose from. The Carolina gold is my favorite. The food was pretty good and reasonably priced. Overall, it's just okay, nothing spectacular. It's not the best BBQ in the world but it's still pretty good. read more

Let me explain my 3 star review, first off the customer service at this location is always great. Everyone is very friendly & courteous. Renovations are starting look real good. My complaint will be with the food. I went today and the salad bar was gross. Most of the lettuce was brown, some of the spinach was wilted, and there was a faint stench over it not sure what it was coming from smelled like old food. Even my friend commented to me about it. Then the meat I ordered had a tasty flavor but texture was just awful. Hardly no meat. I just really wish their food was fresher in the evening as I really want to like eating at Sonny's. read more

In the past we lived closer to Sonny's on University Blvd, I have never had a bad meal there well may be one time but one time only. They served me a over done rack of ribs and the ends were dried out and brittle. Other then that one time it has always been a great meal. Only had wait time if we would go during the lunch hours, do to the workers in the area would head over to Sonny's for there lunch specials. Other then that hardly any wait. service excellent, and food great. We have tried a couple of other restaurants in the area the just do not stand up to quality of foods at Sonny's. I had placed a pick up order for lunch and realized I ordered it from the wrong location, and there was not enough time to get it from the actual location. I called the store and spoke with Darrel and he of course had a good laugh from me. I asked him if I could be refunded and he stated he would ask the manager , he returned and stated "NO" they could not refund me. I asked if I could pick it up for dinner and they of course said "YES". I made the comment I would not want the same food that was prepared for lunch, they stated no worries, we'll re-make it. When I went in about 6 hours later, my food was still at the pick up point, the lady took the order and asked the cook to re-drop it. I explained I did not want the same food and she said, don't worry, well' re-drop it and handed the old food back to the kitchen. I said AGAIN, I did not want the food that had been sitting there for 6 hours. Well, guess what? I got back the same wings, warmed up and COLD tatertots. Worse meal that I have paid for in a long time. In addition, I hate being LIED too. I will not be back to this place on principal. The biggest waste of money. We went through the drive-thru (I was so excited to get BBQ through a drive-thru...quick and easy) and what we got was not worth the money. We paid almost $30 for 2 meals and the amount of food we received was smaller than a kid's meal at most restaurants. The meat was also very overcooked. I believe they skimp on the food ordered through the drive thru...give you less food and the bad parts. The fries were awful and tasted frozen, and the baked beans had no flavor. We have been to Sonny's before to eat in and received a plentiful portion and it was delicious. However, after this occurrence, we will never be returning to any sonny's. There are much better BBQ restaurants in Jacksonville (Bono's, Mission BBQ, and 4 Rivers)....do not waste your money here. read more
