Consistently great barbecue! Love the redneck egg rolls. The brisket, the ribs. I'm not a fan of some of the sauces but it doesn't matter because they do such a good job with everything you don't even need it. Drive thru is solid. They never miss a beat. We were here for a large birthday party. We were seated on the patio. Our waitress was experienced and brought our drinks quickly. Lets just say their glasses are huge. And before mine was empty she brought me another one without asking whether I wanted it or not. Well done! Soon the appetizers arrived. The wings were good. The sweet creamed corn bites were good but way too sweet for me. Then we were served our platters of food which included: ribs, chicken, pulled pork and brisket plus cole slaw, baked beans, garlic toast and muffins. All of the meat was very good. Beans were good with lots of meat in them. Garlic toast was great. The sizzle bbq sauce was good but not hot. So, all in all our food was good. I'm from Iowa so BBQ/cow/pig/chicken is sort of the norm for me. It was slightly smoky. Not over the top but I like mine heavier with smoke. I like the cole slaw with more flavor and less runny mayo. If I were to return I would order the whole hog sandwich as that seems like a nice combination that one can pick apart once they get full eating the sandwich part of it. And I would like to try the mac n cheese. BBQ joints have some of the best mac n cheese but I can't tell you how this place's is. Wait staff - exceptional. Ambience on patio - pretty nice. Will never come back to this restaurant because of the way they have treated a family who came in across from us with a baby in a carriage. It was by their table with the baby asleep in it and they had them leave the place! It is Mother's Day of all dates! What have we come up to? I have been a long-standing patron of the popular chain BBQ Sonny's. I was extremely disappointed in a recent dinner order billed as family size on the Website menu. The portions were much smaller than in past years. The pitmaster Sliced beef brisket was overdone and nearly inedible. The rack of baby back ribs was much smaller than in the past. All side dishes were much smaller than in my most recent orders and the quality had deteriorated. The baked beans and Mac and cheese were excellent in the past but sadly we're institutional and only the fried pickles were memorable. Wouldn't recommend read more

I am giving this place three stars only because of the great service and how clean it was. Growing up here in Florida, I grew up on Sonny's BBQ (among others) and can tell you the quality of their BBQ has gone down drastically. I ordered the pulled chicken and my husband ordered the sampler both of which were so dry and overlooked that it was barely edible. No matter how much BBQ sauce you put on it it still did not take away that saw dust texture of day old dried out meat. We might give this Sonny's one more try before permanently crossing it off out list. But we won't be giving the second chance anytime soon though. read more

I've been to only 3 Sonny's locations... But more times than I can count... and 2 have been a great experience. I cannot, in good conscience, say the same about this location, and I hope their management does something to up their game. First, our server was quick and pleasant, kept our drinks full, and the food is consistent with other Sonny's so they have those things as a plus, and my only reason for 2 stars rather than 1. Here's the unpleasant bits: 1: Our hostess had no interest in doing her job as a hostess. When you have booths and tables empty, you ask which your guests prefer. She just chose to seat us at a table in the middle of the dining room and walked away quickly - why? We saw there were a few open booths, so we got up and walked back to the hostess station immediately, she made eye contact, and rather than excusing herself to ask us if something was wrong, went back to the people who just walked in, proceeded to seat them at a booth, and then came back to us without any glimmer of an apology - maybe she suddenly didn't recognize us as the people she just seated, I don't know, but that's poor service as a hostess. Note: We were pleasant to her despite her lacking in skills to do her job well, and we didn't complain to anyone there. We asked for a booth and she took us to a booth after walking away for about 2 minutes to.. look at all of them? I'm not sure what she was doing. 2: They were out of pulled pork. BBQ chain out of a bbq staple... Um ok? We ordered "sampler" dinners and our server was very nice and explained they were out of pulled pork so that would be substituted with more brisket or chicken or whatever we wanted to substitute with. All bbq meats were as expected and delicious. Protip: Order the chopped brisket if you want it more moist because it's fattier, and in my opinion, much tastier than the sliced lean brisket. 3: The baked beans came out COLD. Not like... slightly warm, but cold.? How? We told our server, and she promptly brought out new hot beans. 4: Table advertising... There was a text to sign up and get $5 off your check "instantly" so I did as the little sign instructed, and apparently their idea of 'instantly' and mine are very different because it's 2 days later and I still haven't received a text back with that coupon. I even triple checked that I was sending the correct code to the correct number. Hahaha! 5: There didn't seem to be any bussers. I noticed quite a few tables that had a bunch of junk left on the table and trash on the floor below them for the entire time we were there, with no one tidying. It was not a full house by any means, so I don't quite understand this. 6: And finally - Omg, the lighting above the tables. It's blasphemous for a dining establishment. It's the exact opposite of how a restaurant should be lit. Have you ever seen the post-apocalyptic films that have the dim white fluorescent lighting in the dark underground bunker that casts a greenish hue on the surroundings? This was very close to that. Their 'cool white' LED bulbs make even the most glorious of food look absolutely disgusting, and it's a huge restaurant no-no. Dim lighting is absolutely fine, but 'warm' lighting for restaurants is the standard for a reason. Ok, well that's about all I've got. Please, Palm Harbor Sonny's management, if nothing else, please train your hostesses on better guest service skills and please invest in proper lighting. I like the food... I'd rather not have to drive to the [well-managed & aesthetically pleasing] Largo store when I want to go to Sonny's. Did I mention our server was great. She was. read more

I'm sure this will change in our next visit but it's Sunday February 16 we just walked out we walked in at 1130 am and there was only one server on in the main room . We sat down and she said she did not want us ! We have a couple servers we sit with during the week and they see us they will vouch we tip CRAZY GOOD ! I'm a former restaurant manager and I worked as a server for years . I know how it is working for tips and I tip crazy good for good service. When you walk in and the server is in a horrible mood it ruins everything. My wife and I could hear her saying she was gonna MAKE US SORRY FOR COMING IN from the kitchen. My husband and I stopped by for an AYCE lunch, but this may have been the last time we'll be here. I had the all you can eat sliced pork, with mac n cheese and green beans as my sides. My sliced pork came out room temperature, almost cold, and the same with my mac n cheese. Meanwhile the green beans were piping hot. On subsequent rounds of pork, each portion came out smaller and smaller. Christoph said that's pretty much the way they do things here, but why? Then, the only time I asked for another mac n cheese, it came out burning hot. The inconsistencies in temperature really had me worried. I ended up with what seemed like a stomach bug later that night (and no, it wasn't because of the volume of food. I've eaten plenty more than this and been fine), so to say the least I was a little paranoid. As far as the quality of food, it was par. Not horrible, not great, and what you'd expect from a chain BBQ joint. Our waitress, on the other hand, was excellent. She was very attentive and nice the whole time we were there, never scoffing when we would ask for another round of meat. We'll definitely visit Sonny's again but maybe not this location in particular. Taking bites of almost cold food and then burning hot food is just not kosher with me. read more

I've got every reason to dislike chain BBQ restaurants, as I've inevitably had better 'Q at the many small barbecue places in most any part of the country. But when you're hungry for barbecue, and those other places aren't open or nearby, and those often nasty BBQ spareribs at your local Chinese takeout won't even come close to handling your 'Q desires, it's a chain like Sonny's that aims to please. And most of the time, in my experience, they hit the mark. No, it's not the best barbecue I've ever had. Yes, it tastes like every other Sonny's. For me, Sonny's is like going to Wendy's. No, it won't be the best burger I'll ever eat, but it's usually consistent and not bad. This store is about 3 minutes from my house, and is located on the northeast corner of Curlew and US Hwy 19 N. There's plenty of parking because it's located in huge Publix parking lot. The interior is fairly big, standard Sonny's decoration, and consistently neat and clean. I've eaten here with groups from 2 to over 10 people, and service has always been prompt and attentive. But I will note that every visit I've made here has been at off-peak hours, so that may have helped every time and been the difference between my experiences and other reviewers. I only eat here a few times a year when family members drag me here, but I usually have the turkey, chopped pork, or ribs with pretty good results. Sides always taste predictable, but not bad for a chain restaurant. Atmosphere: 4 Service: 4 Food: 3 Value: 3 Note: The best chain BBQ I've had is Famous Dave's, which turns out a very respectable product, a good bit better than Sonny's in my opinion . Used to eat at Sonny's all the time pre pandemic and supply chain BS. Really disappointed with my take out dinner of what I thought was going to be Ribs and Chicken for almost 20 dollars. What I got was at first glance I thought to be a kids meal ! No joke the amount was that small ! Plus the order was wrong. Gave me pulled pork that had very little flavor and no ribs as I had ordered. The portion sizes as I said were for about a 8 year old kid. The Chicken was a thigh carved to hardly nothing, and a little and I do mean little chicken leg. Thought it might be a cornish hen leg it was that small. It was more than obvious they were cutting the portion sizes but this was a joke. The beans and slaw were average at best and small portions once again. So the portions were a joke ! Ever since leaving Nashville in November, my fiance and I have been looking for a good BBQ place to replace what we had in the area up there. Sonny's was our first stop to try and find a replacement. And it was just ok. I have to say that we only had take out from here, so I can't comment on the service inside at all. The different meats we got were all kind of dry. It did seem like it's possible that the meat had been sitting around for a while. Obviously I don't know that, but that's the kind of taste I got from it. I find that you can judge a BBQ place based on how good their sauce is, and this place's sauce was just eh. One was overly sweet and the other (even though it's supposed to be spicy) had basically no spice at all. It kind of reminds me of a Famous Dave's chain type place. So you'll go there if you're kind of desperate but you're not going to be totally satisfied. Needless to say, my fiance and I are still in search of our replacement BBQ restaurant! read more

I've been going to Sonny's for years. I used to go with my family at least twice a month but we stopped going for a while and I am glad I decided to stop by for some bar-b-q! On this occasion I got the pulled pork. I usually enjoy either their pulled pork or sliced pork and on a rare occasion I will get ribs. I usually don't opt for the all you can eat when I go because I am full after one plate and don't really get my money's worth. The pulled pork was amazing and I topped it with my favorite Sweet BBQ sauce. They have a couple different choices of sauces but the "Sweet" one is my absolute favorite. It is probably my favorite BBQ sauce from any restaurant/store ever! I had macaroni and cheese as my side and it was very good. It is very tasty but nothing extraordinary. My favorite part about my visits to Sonny's has to be their garlic bread. It is so delicious with just the right blend of seasonings and the perfect bread. It is always great. I also decided to try their mango tea on this occasion as I usually get diet coke, but I really felt like tea. Let me say, it was AMAZING! For this visit I went through the drive-thru as I was headed home from a long night and had a craving for bar-b-q from Sonny's! I absolutely love the fact that they have a drive thru and it didnt take too long at all to get through. We ordered a grilled cheese and half rack of ribs, waited well over 40 min just for the table of 4 next to us to get their food after they'd only been there less than 15 minutes. I was there a week ago & gave a positive review, & suggested that either the great meal I had last week was an intentional improvement by the restaurant, or the great meal was a fluke. After going today I can state that last week's good meal was a fluke. Today's meal was back to being the way it always is at Sonnys. In my opinion the meal is below the quality I can get at most other bbq restaurants. The brisket sandwich I got today had a VERY tiny portion of brisket in it. The flavor was dull & there was fat mixed in. The fries were overcooked, dark, & crunchy like potato chips. The meal came with a drink & cost $10. I thought it was overpriced & of poor quality. I've eaten here many times and and always enjoyed the pulled pork sandwiches. Today I had a late lunch and chose to eat at the bar. I selected a pulled pork sandwich with salad bar and tea. As much as I always enjoyed the seafood salad, it didn't taste fresh. My sandwich had less meat than usual and it didn't have the smoked taste. Needless to say, this experience wasn't up to par for some reason. Bar tender was friendly and efficient. There is so much competition for restaurant dollars in North Pinellas. First off, servers need to be personable and make suggestions. No one knew if I was a regular customer or first timer. No one asked. Ratings for area Sonny's are average. There's got to be a reason. I've enjoyed previous visits yet after today Sonny's drops further down my list of available options. read more

Just alright. I've had better quality at other bbq joints. I ate around 2pm on a Monday at the bar. They had bogo drinks and I ordered the frozen margarita-- it was much too sour. I odered the ribs and wing combo with mac and cheese, cornbread and sweet potato. The ribs and mac and cheese were cold, the wings and sweet potato tasted warm and fresh. I was very dissapointed with their mac and cheese because thats one of my favorite food and I'd previously enjoyed it at other Sonny's before. But the mac and cheese that came with my order was not only cold, it was also stuck together like a big blob-- it had probably been sitting out for some time. When we got there we were immediately seated... the waiter "Cody" was a nice guy. He got our drinks. My son got the pulled pork meal with corn on the cob, my wife got the salad bar and you now can throw a meat order to compliment on it. So pulled pork it was. We have been coming here for years, back when they had their ALL YOU CAN EAT Chicken for $8.99. Never had a problem here, I & my wife only come here about once a year now. We slipped in on a SFF night & sat at the bar. Good service, two bartenders, we had the whole hog sandwich & pick two combo, all was good. They had happy hour as well on beer which was a good deal.
