But there is one thing - they don't have electronic checks and they do it by pen on "check" - also be ready that service charge is already included and it's unreadable sometimes as well. I love Sotto Mare. We came 3ish years ago for the clams and 3 years later I'm still loving the clams! Whenever I'm in the area I will make the effort to eat here! The service is fast and efficient~ the shop is small so where they can sit us is where I will eat lol I think we ate 20 clams and 6 west coast 4 east coast oysters (to us east coast did taste better, they were bigger and sweeter)
Great customer service, great food, great vices! A very busy restaurant because it's that good! It can get a bit loud because it's tight inside the restaurant but they do have outdoor seating. 10/10 East Coast oysters. I tell my partner that the smaller the oyster the better the taste. The red sauce they provide with the oysters make it better. Beautiful taste without the sauce also! 7/10 Lobster Ravioli. They give you a huge plate with large raviolis. Cooked perfectly! The star flavor is obviously lobster but I wish there was something else that heighten the flavor. My partner did say that it was hard to distinguish between the pasta and the lobster. We came 30 min before closing (I know I'm sorry) but when we asked for a table, they were unsure but advised us to check in again at 8:50. We hung out at the bar next door -- and honestly the whole block was a vibe because everyone was out!
I had an absolutely wonderful lunch at Sotto Mare in North Beach. I started with a crisp glass of Pinot Grigio, followed by warm bread with beautiful virgin olive oil and a cup of rich, comforting clam chowder. My seafood linguine in a creamy sauce was outstanding--fresh, generous seafood, perfectly cooked pasta, and a sauce that was flavorful without being too heavy. Every part of the meal was excellent, from the quality of the food to the welcoming, classic San Francisco atmosphere. Five stars all around. Sotto Mare is a North Beach gem and a place I will gladly return to.
Finally made it to this institutional SF restaurant after over nine years living here. They don't take reservations, but you can arrive at the door and book one for later in the day. It's very busy so I recommend arriving early if you want to be sat right away. We wanted to sit outside because it was a beautiful day so we put our name down to come back in an hour and went to a nearby bar for drinks. - clam chowder - solid clam chowder and something nice to start with, but was maybe the weakest thing we ordered. Not necessary. - clam pasta - wonderfully cooked clams, but I did think the pasta itself could use a bit more salt - seafood risotto - assorted seafood, cooked with rice. Personally, I felt like it was a bit salty, but the seafood was very perfectly cooked. - cioppino - you're basically see this on every table. It serves two people. Loaded with seafood as well as some penne. Robust flavor with plenty of bread to enjoy the sauce with. Seafood was cooked exceptionally well. Crab was pre-cracked so it was easy to eat. Overall, a really solid experience. There's a reason so many people like it. I felt like they were both tourists and locals visiting. I personally don't think I need to go back, but I would definitely take someone who is visiting here.
Sotto Mare was the choice for dinner with two friends who had never been there before and really wanted to try it. We made a reservation, but when we arrived, there was a minor mix-up, so we had to wait a bit. To their credit, the staff acknowledged the mistake and did their best to seat us as quickly as possible. We chose to sit outside, which made the wait a little easier. By the time we were seated, we were definitely hungry, so we started with a bottle of white wine to relax a bit. Our server, a very friendly lady with a great sense of humor, recommended the Fiano from Orsi Family Vineyards in Sonoma, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. We skipped appetizers and went straight for the main event. The four of us shared the cioppino, sea scallop sauté, and linguine with seafood, which our server also recommended. All three dishes were flavorful, well prepared, and more than enough for the table. Between the good food, the wine, and joking around with our server throughout the evening, we ended up having a really enjoyable dinner and a great overall experience.
The food was incredibly flavourful, perfect portions and fresh ingredients which is obviously key in a seafood restaurant. The service was fast and friendly and we did not have to wait very long to be served which was nice. The restaurant is a long hall shape so it can be tight and intimate but that's SF so no surprise there. Decor was fun, very coastal and Italian. Definitely would go back to try their signature dishes next time as well!
It was worth the wait to sit outside because indoors was too hot, stuffy and cramp. Do make a reservation if you have a big group. Came here for the cioppino and will come back again. Just be ready for that acid reflux!
What can I say about this delicious restaurant in North Beach first time ever trying it and the food was delicious. We started with octopus salad that was fresh and delicious with a lot of red pepper, peppers and yellow peppers and then we had fresh oysters that were so delicious The West Coast were more meaty. and the East Coast were a little bit more delicate we shared a risotto with fresh seafood that was out of this world highly recommend..
Came to Sotto Mare for a birthday celebration and here are my thoughts: FOOD: Cioppino (8/10): The broth was mildly bland and a bit more watery than we expected, especially considering all the hype. I wouldn't call it the best cioppino I've ever had, since I've definitely had better, but I did enjoy the seafood in the dish. The portion was very generous and could easily feed two people. Surprisingly, it tasted even better as leftovers the next day, after the flavors had more time to develop. I'd honestly recommend getting it to-go and eating it the next day if you can. You'll also avoid the 2-3 hour wait if you don't have a reservation. Scallop Sauté (10/10): DELICIOUS! The scallops were perfectly cooked, and the garlic sauce was rich, flavorful, and packed with flavor. I'd definitely come back just for this dish! East Coast oysters (9/10): definitely tasted sweeter than the West coast. West coast oysters (10/10): Had a creamier texture which I really liked, but both oysters were delicious with the cocktail sauce and Tabasco that came with it. SERVICE: Definitely make a reservation for groups of 3 or more to avoid a long wait. The staff could be a bit quicker with seating guests, but the service was good overall. AMBIANCE: The restaurant had a fun NY like vibes and was surrounded by lots of other food places that are worth trying. Guests can sit indoors or outside. We were seated indoors in front of the chefs which was a bit hot but still fun to watch them cook. Overall, Sotto Mare was a fun place to celebrate a birthday. I probably wouldn't return specifically for the cioppino, but I'd definitely come back to try some of their other seafood dishes.

One of my all time fav spots in the city! Was super lucky to get a reservation for 8 the evening of, and was seated in the basement area which is always super cozy. Food highlights: - West coast oysters - Seafood cioppino (meant to serve 2, absolute must-try!) - Sea scallop saute (might be my personal favorite but I am partial to scallops) - Linguine with white sauce and seafood - Bread on the house :)
My husband and I have been wanting to try their world famous ciopinno. We went on a Thursday around 2:30 and got seated right away! The restaurant is small but cozy. We ordered the ciopinno and house salad. We were given some lovely fresh bread and butter while we waited! Our house salad came out pretty quick and we were disappointed. The salad consisted of only shredded iceberg lettuce and 4 tomato quarters. The dressing was a thousand island one. It was a very simple salad and I was hoping for more variety. It certainly is not worth the $7. The ciopinno was the star of the show and arrive in a big bowl steaming hot! We loved all the seafood including oysters, clams, squid, crab, shrimp, and scallops! The tomato broth was so comforting and had a nice garlic flavor. I really enjoyed this dish and loved dipping my bread into the broth. Yum! All in all, Sotte Mare makes great ciopinno but their house salad is a miss for me next time!
My boyfriend booked a reservation here when his friends were in town and the food was pretty good. I read some reviews before coming and they said the Cioppino was life-changing, but I just have to disagree. I think the Cioppino was flavorful and have a variety of different seafood, but it got a bit heavy after awhile. The portion is definitely big enough for two people. We actually arrived a bit earlier than the appointment time and they sat us right away. When you arrive, the restaurant looks fairly small but they actually have so many more tables inside and downstairs. read more

Oh my goodness. I am not even a huge seafood fan, but Sotto Mare is simply delectable. The Seafood Linguine was the type of meal that made you stop talking just to remember every detail of the meal. And the CLAM CHOWDER. So incredibly good. These two items were the perfect amount for two people, as we were satisfied but still had room for dessert! No matter if you're a local or just visiting, this place is a must try. Plus, the surrounding area is such a vibe, especially in the evening when everyone is out and about! read more

Fantastic all arounder in North Beach! The cioppino is a must order -- super tasty, not heavy at all and absolutely loaded with fresh seafood! The sand dabs are also spectacular. Note that the cioppino comes with penne pasta. This was unexpected for me but not unwelcome. The waitstaff is knowledgeable and does not try to upsell at all. In fact they tell you if they think you are ordering too much which shows great character and immediately builds trust with the customer. I almost ordered the seafood linguine instead of the sand dabs (since I usually use seafood linguine as a measuring stick for Italian restaurants) and the waitress was quick to point out that the linguine would be extremely similar to the cioppino We sat in the downstairs basement section which actually turned out to be the best part of the restaurant in my opinion. The main level is a bit too hot/stuffy/noisy. Ask for the basement when you visit! read more

I always crave seafood, so being able to try Sotto Mare and not have to wait too long was a win in my books. I always love when staff asks for preference in seating especially in smaller venues, and whenever my boyfriend and I like to try a new place we wanna be in the center of the hustle and bustle. My boyfriend ordered the lobster ravioli and I ordered the seafood linguine with apps of oyster shooters and oysters on half shell. All were super great! I was so amazed of the quality of fish, especially in my dish where it was all a variety. The service was great, we never felt like an inconvenience asking for more of our bottle of champagne or if we wanted more bread I can definitely see how the inside is hard to enjoy you food due to space but I still enjoyed our experience. What a great time we had! We timed it perfectly, and were immediately seated at the counter. Very active, fun-filled place. It's known for Cippino, which everyone around us was having. We decided on clam chowder (the best we had in San Francisco) a refreshing bay shrimp cocktail, and perfect, delicately sautéed sand dabs. We had a nice bottle of Multipulciano (most bottles $40 which made Choosing one easier) and we noticed generous wine glass pours around us. Very fun meal. I highly recommend. read more

This week I am visiting family in Cupertino and attending a SF Symphony concert. Decided to check Sotto Mare off my foodie bucket list. Easy street parking (if you don't mind walking a few blocks.) They are not kidding when they boast serving the 'best damn cioppino' in SF. It's an all-crab cioppino (no fish) with black mussels, white clams, tiny shrimp, calamari and bay scallops (At $64 after-tax price I would expect at least a few big prawns and diver scallops.) The tomato-based broth tastes heavenly -- light, flavorful, fresh, piping hot -- there is enough of it for 2 or 3 people, HOWEVER, the seafood is just enough for 1 person. In other words, this cioppino comes in an impressive large pot but is mostly soup. And that's quite all right, as I had enough leftover soup to take home and make another hearty cioppino with my favorite ingredients (including fish and diver scallops!) The crab -- star of this cioppino -- deserves 5 stars for its freshness and meaty claws; each little piece is cracked so even a crab klutz like me can get to the meat easily. The rest of the cioppino is 3 stars, averaging 4 stars. After tip, my 'best SF cioppino' experience in Little Italy cost a whopping $70 (or 150,000 lire if you're from the old country LOL.) I am looking forward to my autumn trip to Italy, where you can get fish soups (but not American cioppino) and other delectable varieties of Italian dishes for a mere FRACTION of U.S. prices (and no tips!) I highly recommend Rick Steves' new book "Italy for Food Lovers" (co-authored with Fred Plotkin). read more

The cioppino here is worth every penny. We came in on Saturday relatively early and were seated pretty quickly. I will say it started to fill up while we were there. Now given how busy they get, the service isn't the greatest just beware. Other than that the food is amazing. The seafood in the cioppino was fresh and the broth was delicious. Still dreaming of the crab. This was a comfort food growing up and I haven't had a bowl this good in a while. If this is your first time here I'd highly recommend it. We went here during our visit this past weekend. They were able to seat us on a Friday night at 5pm right away. We ordered the cioppino for $55 and it was more than enough to split between two people along with some complimentary sourdough bread. Thank you for a delicious dinner! read more

Walked a GIANT hill to get here, it was worth it! The rest of SFO is trash, but this area is a shining star. Sat down immediately- bar or outside. We choose outside. I have always wanted to try this restaurant. We had reservations especially during Sunday night when it was Fleet Week. My Aunt and I shared "the best damn cioppino" and we couldn't even finish it! This restaurant is located in the Italian area and has a very cozy environment. We went there on the weekend and the restaurant was very crowded. If you choose the first floor or outdoor seats, you need to wait for a seat, but there are seats in the basement and you don't need to wait, so we chose the basement. Our group of four shared five dishes, the portions were sufficient, and the restaurant also provided butter and bread. 1Grilled Sand Dabs (Fried fresh fish, side dishes and vegetables, the taste is quite satisfactory, you can choose the sauce, I chose Lemon Butter Caper Sauce): 70 2Whole Crab Diavolo (rich crab meat, garlic pasta tastes good, without the pungent feeling of raw garlic): 80 3Crab Cioppino (This is the restaurant's specialty, the seafood is fresh, and the secret tomato sauce soup is very delicious. Bread dipped in the soup is even better. If you come as a couple, one dish is enough, and you can also add some oysters to try. I wanted to try oysters, but forgot to order it): 90 4Lobster Ravioli (a bit greasy, not recommended. If 4 people share, about one per person is acceptable): 65 I recommend 23. What I ordered: ** 9/10: Sea Scallop Saute - $31.95 - star of the meal!!!!!!! - scallops were buttery, melt in your mouth- UGH CHEF'S KISS!! - the sauce was garlicky liquid gold, we devoured every last drop with bread ** 7/10: "Best Damn Crab Cioppino" - $54.95 - an iconic dish, if it's your first time, you need to try it! - plenty of seafood, they do not skimp here - it was good, but not the best i've ever had :') - delicious with a side of buttered bread! - enough to feed 3-4! ** 8.5/10: Pesto Linguine, whole portion - $16 - creamy and aromatic, tons of fresh basil flavor! - linguine was the perfect texture - so comforting and tasted incredible when reheated too! Sotto Mare is a true North Beach classic! No frills, homey Italian spot with fresh seafood. The restaurant is a long, tight space that is best for groups of 4 or less. If you are looking for a quiet intimate dinner you should look elsewhere. But, if you are looking for great food in a lively environment, this place is it and definitely worth the wait (about 40 minutes on a Friday night). First off the vibe was a lot of fun. It is decorated with and eclectic mix of pictures and trinkets. I giant swordfish adorns the ceiling. They played great music (mostly 80s music when we were there) in the background that worked well with the crowd noise We had the lobster raviolis and the seafood rissotto, the lobster raviolis were large and came on a very large plate in a delicious red creamy sauce. I ate every bite and used the bread to soak up the sauce. My wife had the rissotto and commented multiple times how much she liked it. The rice was cooked perfectly and it was very flavorful. The seafood was tender and delicious. The place was extremely busy but the service was excellent. Our waitress was attentive, pleasant and very helpful. Cioppino 5/5 - I didn't know what to expect but this dish was really tasty! The broth does have a seafood taste but not in a bad way, although I really like seafood and don't find the fishy taste. There is a good amount of seafood in this dish. Crab legs were easy to peel which was so helpful. I shared it with one other person and we were able to finish it. We didn't order anything else and it was very filling for two people. They also give free bread for the table! TLDR: Quite literally "The Best Damn Cioppino" in town and a must try! Paired with excellent service and an adequate wait time, how can you say no? Note: At time of visit, there was a 4% surcharge on all items (see bottom of menu photo). - - - - - Stumbled upon Sotto Mare while browsing on Yelp, and wow, did that Cioppino photo not disappoint! My friend and I visited on a Saturday night, and the wait was a generous 25 minutes. Seating was a bit cramped and rocky on the outside, but what was exciting was being seated and soon having the opportunity to try "The Best Damn Cioppino." We were started with waters and then bread, a small appetizer munched with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. We also tried one of each of their oysters. The ones from the West were bigger - more bang for buck - but more gusty, definitely a light sweet with a sea-like taste. The east, on the other hand was smaller and much more delicate, very smooth, going down easy. It was lightly salty and set, a good balance of each. Each bite was tender and crisp. Advertising as "best," that Cioppino did not disappoint when it arrived. There was indeed a full crab, and a strong, sweet aroma of tomatoes. The Cioppino was spiced so well the crab had enough flavor without any additional sauces. The shrimps were a decent size and crisp; the clams and mussels, too, tasted very fresh. Inside, there were also a small serving of pasta, but for the carb lovers, dipping the bread into the Cioppino is also an option! Besides the food, service was amazing. The staff were polite and efficient under high pressure (and amount of guests), and never missed a beat. Having cleared out at least 5 cups of water, I can't recall waiting more than a few minutes before getting a refill! read more

Another fantastic meal at Sotto Mare! Wonder why this place has a wait all the time? It could be that they have the best seafood in all of north beach. The best time to get there is earlier in the evening, after 6 p, you are looking at seating probably closer to a 8p seating and some items like the very popular sand dabs maybe sold out. Saying this restaurant is popular and very busy is a huge understatement, if you observe the neighborhood dining establishments you will notice no lines and nearly empty establishments but here at Sotto Mare nothing but long lines and even longer waits for a table, but you will certainly be rewarded with some of the finest seafoods you have ever experienced. We ordered the sand dabs, branzino and a cioppino to share. The sand dabs are sold out early for a very good reason, they're out of this world great, the branzino is a fairly newer dish which I have not seen before equally great, bug the cioppino, wow was that great, it claims to be enough for two people, lol, two normal people but I never was normal when it comes to portion size, it was simply a appetizer size for me, but then again not many people attack and enjoy food like me and their cioppino is outstanding. read more

Memorably delicious. We understood the assignment. A group of six arrived at Sotto Mare for our 5:15pm reservation in anticipation of what has been called by many as THE BEST cioppino. Escorted down to the basement where two smaller rooms revealed themselves. First to arrive, it felt more like a private party of intimate friends. Within minutes the room was filled and a cacophony of languages overtook the room. It seemed a mix of regulars and first time visitors. Seriously, we zeroed in on a few green salads, the french bread with butter, and the ever famous seafood stew. In fact we started with two pots then adding on a third pot of cioppino. So much goodness! While each pot had generous portions of clams, mussels, shrimp, dungeness crab and penne pasta, we still wanted more. Until our bellies just couldn't take any more. Good think I wore my elastic waisted pants, in preparation of this evening. Hahah. Good food, great company, a little bit of red, a little bit of white, and whole lotta delicious seafood. Does it get any better than this?! Thank you Mike C for gathering us for this memorable meal. Thank you AL, Ed, Dennis and Shirley for introducing me to the goodness within the walls of Sotto Mare. Sotto Mare is a world famous restaurant here in the North Beach Area of SF. If you're into seafood this is the spot, very bustling on a Friday night. I called for a reservation for 6 people and they said 930 was the earliest. We were in the area and they called us sooner, the options to sit were either outside or in the basement and we opted for up front since we had a large group. It's pretty tight indoors but this local establishment is worth visiting if you're from out of town, all about seafood! You have to get their Cioppino, we ordered 2 for our group. We also did oysters, clams, the special halibut, lobster ravioli, linguini and some drinks! It was way more than enough for 6 people. The food came out quickly and tasted SO fresh. Parking can be difficult since it's a pretty busy area, there's street parking and some paid parking lots. Might be easier to park in a garage further and walk over. Staff was super friendly and worked quickly! Gotta visit this spot if you're in for seafood and in the area! read more

Pure heaven - the Ciappinno - for the win. Everything about this place is gold. You can have a seat at the counter and smell the wonderful love flowing from the kitchen right in front of you. Such a unique restaurant! Came here at 5:30pm to try to avoid dinner rush & long wait times...I love seeing all the wall decor and it's fun watching the chefs handle 5 frying pans at the same time haha Bit of a tight squeeze inside (esp if you're seated at the bar) but the food is worth it! We got a clam chowder to eat with the free bread, and the crab & seafood cioppino, which is enough for 2 or 3 people! Might be a bit messy cracking open the crabs, so don't recommend coming here with white shirts, but they do give you a bib to put on first LOL read more

You can request but it depends on your timing. Higher likelihood for an outside table if you get an early seating. SF weather is unpredictable especially summer months so bring or wear a warm jacket.

One review said the cioppino comes with penne. is that true? also do they make cioppino for one?
Yes! There's penne pasta under all the seafood. As for the smaller portion, I'm not sure...I only remember seeing the big bowl for 2-3 people.
1st time visiting SF in Feb - how likely we will be to get a table on a Friday night for 2 while celebrating a BDay. Would like set plans but understand their will be await. Are Fridays extremely busy?
I would definitely go very early. It's a very small restaurant with not much seating.
