This place was a hidden gem. Great place, great service, great food. Ambiance: My husband and I went for lunch. Initially we thought it was closed, but once we got closer we were able to see the "open" sign. They have patio seating in front of the door and they have plenty of seating inside. The decor of the place was really unique and really cool, very casual place. Service: as soon as we walked we were greeted and sat right away. The shrimp added to the top was an added touch, but I loved the sausage. The CornBread Bbq Sliders... that was a game changer! It was sweet and savory and the bbq sauce they gave on the side complimented the dish so well. One of the best thing we loved about this place was that the food did not take a long time to come out. Our experience with this type of food is that it takes forever for them to cook the food, so it was very nice to be able to come to a Southern Kitchen restaurant and get the food at a reasonable time. Been working at new location since March 2025 and not once got paid on time. The last check I received from them was on May 27th, 2025 and after working up until mid June, they have refused to pay me my last check. Money that is OWED to me. $500+ in tips might I add. They keep giving me the run around about my money, when in reality they know they never mailed me my last check to begin with. No tracking number has been given to me after asking and owner Sparkle refuses to return my messages and calls. SGK was an amazing experience from start to finish. Everything single item I had was a different flavor journey. To start man those collard green egg rolls are to die for. You could literally get these and a few drinks and be good but don't stop there get more. The catfish in my catfish and grits was fried to perfection it was crispy soft hot and not greasy that's a person that knows how to fry up some goot catfish and yess I said goot. Tried Southern Gourmet for the first time with a friend for lunch. We arrived at almost 12pm on a Thursday. Wasn't busy at all so we sat immediately. I had to try the collard green egg rolls since they are so popular. I also had the Bama wings and blackened peas. Everything was absolutely delicious! The food came out fast and hot. The egg rolls were stuffed with flavorful greens, turkey, and cheese sauce. I thought the cheese would be weird but it worked well. The dipping sauce was spicy and a perfect addition. Got off to a rocky start because I could not see the sign from the street. Then I opened the door to music so loud, you swear you are at a nightclub. After being seated our waiter brought out mini biscuits with some honey butter. Would have been good if the biscuits were warm. Since this is a bi-weekly brunch group we decided to order a $50 carafe of hurricane for 5 people. It was brought to our table with unexpected fanfare which was pleasant and picture worthy. The hurricane concoction was simply delicious. It was strong and within 5 mins we were all buzzing. After tasting some crispy and delectable collard greens and smoked turkey egg rolls, everyone ordered catfish with various sides. I ordered oxtails over potato hash and two over easy eggs. Catfish was crispy and with the right amount of seasoning. My oxtails were tender and flavorful. Potato hash being a pleasant change since I am used to rice. For dessert the 6 of us shared a piece of pecan pie, which was very tasty with just the right amount of sweetness. We also ordered a apple cobbler that came with vanilla ice cream. It was good but the topping wasn't as crunchy as I like but everyone said it was good. As for the esthetics, the place was clean, colorful and a lively and loud atmosphere. We finally got our drinks and sadly they weren't a hit amongst any of us. They didn't have the frozen margarita so I got the new cotton candy drink. Sadly the drink tasted like it had no alcohol. Pure juice and the cotton candy just melted and added no additional flavor to the drink. It was disappointing. Our waitress also forgot about us for a while and we were ready to order for a good 25-30 mins before ordering. I order the souther charm plate which is the oxtail over rice and gravy. Although the food tasted good. Well seasoned and lots of flavor on the oxtail... I only got two oxtail. Like for $24 I was expecting more than that and a bowl of rice. Not worth the price. I was so disappointed because one oxtail was mostly fat so I basically got one oxtail for $24. The egg rolls were delicious and the fried catfish was good but extremely greasy this time. The yams were still good as well. But the service and food portions for all items needs to be heavily considered. I think it would be great to have a karaoke type night but to lower the music a bit so ppl can at least hear each other sitting by them and also not to give the waitresses and waiters the mic while they're clearly trying to take orders or focus on their tables. First let me start by saying the entire staff was AMAZING! Top notch customer service from the time my family and I entered the building until the time we left! The hostess (I didn't catch her name but it starts with an A) greeted us with a friendly smile and assured us our wait to be seated wouldn't be long which it was not. Let's move to our waiter David (Mr. Mississippi!) he was super helpful on suggesting what we should order. He gave his honest opinion on each dish and was a lot of fun to interact with! He kept checking on us when each appetizer came out to see how we liked it as well as our food. When I stated my greens was mostly juice he offered to take them back and bring me out another one. He said "I want to make sure my tables leave full" that statement let me know he truly cares about his customer's experience which is often times rare in a black establishment (I hate to say it but it's the truth) so when you go in there ask for David! Now let's get down to the food - The complimentary cornbread muffins were amazing! They served them with a butter spread that had a hint of honey! It was soooooooooo good! And they served them in these tiny skillets which I thought were super cute As an appetizer we ordered the collard green egg rolls and fried green tomatoes. Them egg rolls was SLAPPIN' super flavorful and absolutely delicious!!! It was like an entire party in my mouth! Best egg roll that's ever graced my palate! It's a MUST TRY! It was runny and SALTY SALTY SALTY OMG by the time I left there I had a headache because I know my blood pressure went up due to the amount of salt in the food. The food is delicious, the staff is very nice. I honestly feel sorry for the staff because they have to constantly try to keep the customers patient as it takes a very,very long time to get your food. The place was not that busy as we went on a Wednesday night at 5:00 pm. We ordered appetizers, which did not come for over an hour. When we asked about our appetizers we were told they make each group of meals as they are ordered, we were still only number 3 in line! The actual meals did not come for a full hour and 45 minutes from the time we arrived. It makes no sense, they should at least put the appetizers in right away so you can enjoy them and learn to create the meals in a timely manner. Some of our food obviously was already made, such as the Mac & cheese, the collard greens, gumbo, & sweet potato. The only thing they had to make right away was the fried catfish & chicken tenders. It doesn't take long to make those items. So I guess they need more cooks and someone that knows how to organize to go and in restaurant orders. I highly doubt we will eat in there again, we'll order our food to go. I sure hope they learn how to run the cooking aspect of this restaurant efficiently.
