But I like Pronto Mart: it's more than a smoke stop, and something of a Hyde Park institution. First of all, dude from Nepal that owns/runs the place is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. (I should really know his name and I'm ashamed that I don't.) When he asks you how you're doing, it feels strangely like he cares about the answer, that it's more than an empty formality. I once tried to buy a bag of ice from him to fill up a tiny shoulder bag cooler holding a six-pack of beer. He refused and sent me to the store's ice machine to load up for free. It's a rare thing to encounter anyone nice enough to cost themselves a sale. But the whole business runs that way: gas prices are among the cheapest in the city, air for your tires is still free, bags of ice are half of what they cost elsewhere, and the beer selection is surprisingly good and is sold at state minimum. They'd rather have neighborhood folks give repeat business than gouge anyone on a single sale. And that's pretty cool.

Sometimes I win $4 or $8 here and there, and I want to reinvest those dividends instead of doing the smart thing and walk away with the loss, so they will just deduct my winnings off of what I purchase. Sometimes places tell me they can't do that and give me cash first - I mean who the hell uses cash nowadays? But these guys are cool and calm and no complications. Later the same readers struggled to read my debit card (is it something I said?) even if I ran the debit card without the Fuel Savings Reward card. Horseshit. Invest in a tech to fix your pumps. Today I'm low on fuel, in that part of town, in the driving rain... Okay, I'll give it a shot. I'm smart enough not to mess with the Rewards card - this station will not take it. I slide my debit in and out. Cool. No beeping, buzzing, crazy messages. Actually the whole thing works! Yippee! No running out of gas in the rain! Everything works! Not so fast Homer... Everything worked but the damn pump. There the nozzle sat in my fuel tank tube dispensing... Not... A... Drop... I went into the filthy, small, cramped store. Can you turn on the pump? Its just slow. No, its off. Can you turn it on? Its slow. Its not slow, its stopped. Slow. No! Not slow! Stopped. Can you turn it on? What? Turn it on. On? Yes, on. Like pump. Can you turn it on? Uh... Okay - that means no. A station you should patronize only if you're into self-masochism. Deserves no stars.
