Truth be told, not 100% sure why. I just associate the Midwest with beef-- after all, I did come across a store that was called "meat and beer". The Beef tartare was good.. but the egg salad that accompanied it was even better. My NY strip was not as tender as I thought it would be.. and missing salt. This place reminds me of the old Sam Seltzer's in Tampa.. old school charm, maybe the best in the 90s... but a far cry from what a good steak is now. Pricy but well worth it... It's a steakhouse, and a really fancy one at that. Located outside of Downtown Omaha, this restaurant is attached to an upscale hotel, but does have a storefront that faces downtown streets. The service was relatively attentive, not overly friendly or talkative, though they still did the job well. The food was top-notch with the exception of my wife's filet minion. The steak frites and the sides of a loaded hash brown and asparagus were exceptional. But the filet minion left much to be desired. We should have sent it back but we got the impression that would not have been well received. Anyway, it was still edible and the sides made up for it. "Photos are worth a 1000 words here, indeed," and that's a compliment to the kitchen who always makes certain that the food is plated cleanly/nicely. The ambiance is "steakhouse classic" with warm and deep wood tones, dark red leather booths, white table clothes, gleaming silverware, candle-lit-lighting and big band era/Sinatra etc music playing at the appropriate volume. It was less than a 4-block walk north & it did not disappoint. We travel extensively & participate in what we call "Dining at a Certain Age"... meaning that those of us who are in our 60's look for 3-criteria: 1. Good atmosphere with a minimum of loud music & background noise where you can have a great conversation over your meal. 2. Great service where the staff is professional & knowledgable of their food or drink offerings and provide prompt service deserving of a good tip! 3. Good to GREAT food at a reasonable price... We both chose the filet ($42@ à la carte) that came with a delicious & fresh house salad (dressing on the side). We ordered 1/2 orders of their sides of grilled asparagus & sweet potato fries and each had a glass of red wine. I flew to Omaha to visit my folks, and we tried out this steakhouse, and wow am I glad we did. The drinks we ordered at the bar were strong and perfectly made. When seated we were greeted by the kindest and most attentive server, Chris. When he left the table, my folks and I took a moment of pause to comment on how warm and engaging and knowledgeable he was. We started with the crab cakes and pork belly - and they were next level. They deserve 5 stars alone. Now, to the meal. My father and I got the filet mignon, and it was cooked to perfection. Crispy on the outside and brilliantly tender in the middle. Salted also to perfection. But it's not over yet, we opted for our steaks to be topped with truffle butter and that really expanded our horizons. All I'm saying here is that the "black truffle butter" is with the "sure why not!" My mom ordered the ribeye and au poivre and it was also flavorful. Both the steaks had a smoky grilled flavoring to them and it was surprising and delightful. Now, the sides. We got the loaded hashbrowns, brussels sprouts, and asparagus. Asparagus was perfectly crunchy, loaded hash browns were rich and had some charred crunchy crusts and came in a cast iron (yum). The only one we weren't obsessed with were the brussels sprouts, and even those were delightful. Sidenote, for most of their sides you can order half sides for half the price. Now, for the flourless chocolate cake. This was the most rich decadent dessert I've EVER tasted. I'm not one to rave about chocolate desserts... but this one deserves it. For appetizers we had the french onion soup and meatballs. Both of which were completely off the chart. I followed with an order of Tuna Tartare. The tuna had a taste that was heavenly. I regularly have tuna tartare or sashimi if it's available anywhere I go to eat but nothing has ever compared to this. We followed appetizers with a house salad like I've never tasted in my life!!! The Filet was cooked to perfection as far as appearance. seared with a warm pink center. But the meat was a bit dry. After such a sinful feast we had to pass on the deserts. All in all,.... It was an amazing meal that I won't soon forget. An orgasm of flavor in my mouth which left me wanting to smoke a cigarette and I've never smoked!!! And maybe. We dined here on Christmas Eve. (Tip: Definitely make a reservation.) It's a small-ish place (from what I could see) in downtown Omaha. Parking was a breeze with the on-street parking right across the street. (Note: Dress code on Yelp says dressy, but you're ok in nice jeans and a nice top.) We were promptly seated and greeted. Our server was very knowledgable and made some great wine recommendations. The wine list is plentiful with a good range of costs. The menu was fairly extensive with a multitude of options, as well as several specials. (Note: All entrees include a house salad, which can be upgraded for a small charge to a soup or different salad.) To start off, we opted for the oysters, french onion soup, lobster bisque, and chili. The oysters were surprisingly fresh, but I wasn't all that impressed with the accompaniments and presentation (3 stars). The french onion soup was tasty and had lots of cheesy goodness (4 stars). The lobster bisque was a perfect consistency and had large lumps of lobster, but it could've used more flavor (3.5 stars). The chili was excellent, good meat, black beans, spicy sour cream, etc. (5 stars). Then came the house salads. I, honestly, wasn't all that impressed. It was different and unique, so points for that. And the dressing was nice. (3 stars) The steaks, of course, were the highlight. (Tip: Don't forget to top your steak with one of the sauces or preparations.) I liked that all the steaks were prime and they offered several bone-in options. I opted for the bone-in filet (something that is often hard to find!) oscar-style. (Note: They do their oscar-style with lobster claw, not crab.) When our steaks arrived, our server had everyone cut into their steaks and check if it was cooked to our liking before leaving. This was a much appreciated touch that I haven't seen done much elsewhere before. All of our steaks were perfect. The steaks are cooked at a super-high temp for a short time to get a nice, crispy char on them. I really liked the char! The filet was super thick. The lobster was perfectly cooked and fresh. The bernaise sauce was tasty. The asparagus was thick and just right. It was an awesome steak. (5 stars) For the sides, we went all out and got the fries, loaded hash browns, truffle mac 'n' cheese, and blue cheese spinach. (Tip: You can get everything but the potato dishes as a 1/2 order.) Fries were perfectly cooked and had good seasoning (3 stars). The blue cheese creamed spinach was tasty and unique, but a bit lacking (3.5 stars). The truffle mac 'n' cheese was tasty, but could've used more flavor (4 stars). The loaded hash browns were the star of the side dishes. They were unique and loaded with goodness (5 stars). We also could've pass up dessert and got a slice of the chocolate fudge cake with a scoop of ice cream to share. It was super rich and quite yum. It was more fudge than cake, which I really liked. (4.5 stars) All in all, this was an excellent way to spend our Christmas Eve and we may have just started a new family tradition. And I still keep thinking about that steak and loaded hash browns. I was told Spencer's was one of the places to go for steak, but honestly this was the place to be. The place is quite overstaffed, in the classy sort of way. From the man in the suit opening the door, to the boisterous waiters, this really reminded me of something out of a Humphrey Bogart movie. The waiter was quite enthusiastic yet professional, and told us that the place has been voted Omaha's Best Steak several years in a row. He mentioned there is a special 1600F stove for searing the steaks, and after eating here, I understand what he's talking about. The steak really is something special here. Read on. The steaks here include salad, but no sides. Sides can be had for some $8 apiece. The salad was actually quite well done, with the pieces cut up nice and small. Quite tasty, with some nice sour zing. I had the 14oz Spencer Steak. Wow this thing delivers. The marbling was beautiful, and the juices stayed mostly in the steak as opposed to spilling onto the plate like most other places. This was hands down one of the best steaks I've ever had in my entire life. I can still taste it now. Sauteed mushrooms - served in a small iron skillet. The waiter warned it was super hot but I could easily touch the handle so I'm not sure. With that said, the mushrooms were sizzling. Great taste. Truffle mac & cheese - just the right amount of cheese. The truffles really do add something to what you would think is an ordinary dish. Again, my colleague and I were very pleasantly surprised. Burgers were the reason we were here to begin with and those shone through, with cabernet caramelized onions, white cheddar, applewood smoked bacon, roasted garlic aioli and house pickles on a pretzel bun. The accompanying fries I could've done without. And the truffle mac & cheese was unfortunately soupy. Calamari 'fries' were squishy and the onion ring breading was almost sweet. Not the place to unwind or bring a date for a romantic dinner. A group of 5 were pretty loud, and one guy was pretty inebriated, cursing and making very inappropriate comments at times. Aside from this group, it did seem the noise level was pretty high, and I could barely hear the up-tempo music in the background. The majority of diners appeared overly casual (jeans and logo T-shirts), so part of the ambiance surprised me considering Spencer's is supposed to be more upscale, especially given the price point of beverage and food. Service: My waiter explained the menu thoroughly and was quite knowledgeable. He checked on me periodically. One demerit: An excellent steakhouse shadows the junior server and requests the guest to test their steak to ensure it was cooked to their liking - this never happened. He didn't stop by until I had consumed half my meal at that point. Food and Beverage: The Manhattan. Hands down, the best I've had of the steakhouses in Omaha that serve this specialty cocktail. The cherries were NOT the super syrupy maraschino ones either. The bread and butter were good. The complimentary salad greens with champagne vinaigrette were so-so; I couldn't actually taste much vinaigrette, and it was quite dry. The filet mignon I selected with Medium Rare, which should be Warm Pink-Red; however, touches in the middle were more Cool Pink or closer to rare Rare. Had my waiter done due diligence, I might've requested a shade longer, but it wasn't an overt detriment. The filet was otherwise flavorful, tender, and juicy. The Oscar style addition, however, was a tad disappointing. The jumbo lump crab were small scattered pieces overly drowned in the Hollandaise. The balance was off. I also selected the half order of mushrooms. These were a quite tasty mix on their own with the wine reduction, but did not pair well with the Oscar - my fault. Christopher; Pinot Noir that was $45, which we took to our table to finish with dinner. The dining room tables are spaced nicely, so we didn't hear any noise from any other table. White tablecloths with white candles sets the mood nicely. I ordered the Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail, which I thought was the best I've had in a long while! Well worth ordering again! It was juicy and tasty, the little sauce and seasoning was perfect, it melted in my mouth and kept me coming back for more. The chopped salad was crazy good. I usually only eat ranch, but I tried this salad and it was amazing, all of the flavors mixed together so well and it was perfect: there was great walnuts, carrot garnish, at least 3 different types of cheese, lettuce was clean and crisp and the champagne dressing was light and delish. For our sides we got a half order of the carrots and the truffle Mac and cheese. Both were delish. The Mac and cheese was like nothing I've ever had before.
