Yummy food he makes the best Amritsari fish so fresh and the paneer tikka was absolutely yum. My favorite was the. Bhuna ghost. Spice Social is a terrific Indian restaurant. Its food is first-class, as is its service. The restaurant is smallish. It looks pretty ordinary from the street, but it is stylish and comfortable inside -- we ate with our dog on the small patio behind the main restaurant. We ordered four items from the lengthy menu: * Smoky Chicken Tikka (tandoori) -- Our server suggested the restaurant's tandoori entrees. The Smoky Chicken Tikka sounded promising. It surpassed our expectations. It was succulent, tender, spicy, and delicious. We gave it five stars. * Biryani (vegetable) -- We both enjoy biryani but formerly viewed it as an accompaniment. Spice Social's biryani raises the dish to another level. The restaurant serves it in a ceramic bowl covered with a piece of baked-on naan. Inside, the rice is exceptionally flavorful. The mixture of spices and the large pieces of vegetables combine to create the best biryani we have ever eaten. Do yourself a favor and order this dish. * Maa Ki Daal -- It is marvelous. The menu states it simmers for 48 hours. That time is well spent. The spices and creamy texture make it the best daal I have ever eaten. Went here to celebrate my bday with a small dinner party. It was the 1st time for all of us! Let me tell you, we will all come back again!!! It was amazing! First off, loved the ambiance and the decor, hats off to the owner! Secondly, the service was great, our waitress Erica was friendly and tentative, the hostess and other employees were friendly as well. And last but not least, the food was fantastic I love Indian food, these dishes were not heavy with tons of dairy or tons of oil. So flavorful and fresh. We tried the tandoori tiger prawns, aloo gobi, a yummy eggplant dish, samosas and veggie biryani. Wow wow wow!!! You have to try this place...it will not disappoint. We enjoyed the atmosphere, the food was delicious, and the service was attentive. A plus for us was that they serve cocktails, making it feel more like a date night spot! The main entrees and cocktails were spot on. I would recommend not ordering the dessert, we ordered the "trio" and all the selections tasted really dry even though it was seeped in cream. I came in for lunch and the food was so bad I ended up having to go somewhere else to eat afterward. I ordered the butter chicken poutine and it tasted like I was eating leftovers. The fries were fresh, but the butter chicken was microwaved and lukewarm. There weren't any fresh cheese curds sprinkled on top, but there was some melted cheese mixed into the curry which makes me think they just reheated a dish that was prepared for someone else. The food might be better/fresher during dinner time but this is NOT the place you want to go for lunch. read more

Definitely not a date night place. Made reservations and there were 3 open tables to the front near the window. But they put us in the dark, back of the restaurant saying they were reserved. This back area was where they stored and stacked dishes which was very loud and took away from the ambiance. Waitress was nice enough. She was the only one on the floor for most of the time and didn't seem super knowledgeable about the food. First appetizer was a fail since it was served cold which would have been good to know since we asked about trying new things. It was called Gol Gappa. Cold potatoes in a cold fried shell and had an off putting mint water dip that tasted a bit like mildew. The samosas were good and the Tamarind sauce was delicious. They have a very limited drink menu. When asked what kind of wine they had "house" was the only answer. Smoky chicken Tikka and butter chicken were very good and garlic Naan was tasty. Their style was more like a pita. The decor was nice and the music was fun. But it was more like a family restaurant set up. There were a lot of cooks and a manager wandering around but not very attentive service. And when we left after our dinner, those three front tables were still empty. read more

Here we go! I have been here twice. The first time I came to this place, I was pleasantly surprised with the service and the food quality. I ordered only the appetizers and everything tasted great. We had the Amritsari Kulcha, the wings and the chaat and the flavors were spot on. I was so Impressed by them that I decided to bring my friends who were visiting LA to this place on my second visit. I wanted to try the Dal bukhara the chef recommended while we were there the first time. I was in for a surprise. The second visit was a total failure and disappointment. First off, we got there at 7pm and the restaurant said they did not have any Dal Bukhara that day (It's one of the staple dishes that any Indian restaurant ought to have in their lunch/dinner menus). I was really looking forward to it and it was such a bummer. Secondly, the butter chicken that we ordered was stale or rotten. We had to return it. Most of all the food we ordered did not taste great or anything like the food that I had received the first time I had come in. The only saving grace was our server who was nice and sweet. They even messed up our final bill which just added to the frustration. I really wanted to like this place because the ambience and service was nice. It's hard to come by Indian restaurants with good service/seating. I am not sure if I have the courage to give this place another try. I am heartbroken. read more

Staff is extremely friendly. We had a large group; they don't have a full service bar, only a handful of beers. In fact the waiter forgot to bring my second one out and ended up giving me a beer at no charge. The menu has changed a bit after our last visit. It seems that the owner may have changed. Some of the popular items are still on the menu, but was very sad to see the smoky chicken removed and replaced with a cream sauce one. I would still recommend this place, the atmosphere is nice. Amazing food and great service. I recommend the Dhabha chicken curry, which is a tomato-based sauce with a spicy (but not painful) kick, and the Maa Ki Daal, which are lentils in a tomato-y sauce. The curries come with rice included, which makes the price point quite reasonable ($17-$20 for a main dish). The space is beautifully done with high ceilings, brick walls, and industrial light fixtures, so it would be a good place to bring a date. Make sure you do the Yelp check-in for the free gulabi dessert- round dumplings soaked in a cardamom honey syrup with pistachio bits. This came out hot and was devoured quickly! The staff was very friendly. It had the feel of a family-run place. We will be back to try more things. read more

Friday afternoon lunch here and not satisfied. Started off ordering the papdi chaat and gol gappe. The gol gappe: tasted like they were store bought and the masala was from the little packet that comes with it. The papri chaat: sent it back. There were some sort of a sour taste to it. Thinking it was the pomegranate seeds, we took bites without that. Same thing, so we asked the server and she did not know what it could be. I think it was the yogurt (spoiled). After sending it back, we got the fries instead and they were accompanying themselves. No condiments of any sort. As a rule of thumb, if an Indian restaurant brings out Ketchup, run. The mint chutney was probably the best thing there. Iffy about our experience so far, we decided to order another app instead of main course. We got the Vada Pav, and that too was sub par at best. Drier than the black top on a sunny day. Overall, will not be coming back. Outside of the food itself and the somewhat slow service, this place is overpriced. the food doesn't even match the pricing. read more
