Chicken Street Cart Doner: This was my probably my 5th time here and typically I would rate this place a 4-5 star. However, today was more of a 3 star but I rounded my review a star up because maybe today was just a bad day for them. The chicken was so dry. It almost seemed at tho the meat has been sitting out all day. On top of that, they skimped out on the sauce a little today as well. Maybe the guy making the doners was not on his game today. I have never had this issue before. I really hope that was just a mistake for today and that this is not going to be a continued issue. Sweet Potato Waffle Fries: AMAZING! Spitz is pretty consistent across the board and my body definitely craves it once in awhile. I used to hit up Spitz at least 2x a week, however, when they changed the way they make their chicken, everything went down hill and it was quite the adjustment to get back into it... The manager/owner told me they wanted to make the chicken healthier (very much appreciated) but the initial change was such a shock, and they had to iron out the new recipe for a few months before they "got it right" and I do believe my palette loves it again! In fact, when ordering take out from Eagle stock I got THREE SIDES of it, so clearly I'm a fan (oh and I ate it all). What's really killer at Spitz though are those damn fried garbanzo beans. I'm debating between 3 stars or 2. I went with three only because my meal tasted reasonably good. It definitely wasn't because of the customer service, that experience was pretty sad and they make this location so difficult to get to I wonder if they even want customers at all? I ordered and payed for my meal online and later stopped by to pick it up. There is like 3 parking spots and street parking is all taken. It was a difficult process getting here. When I walk in no one is at the counter, I look around and see no staff. I wait and wonder how does this place stay open? I finally lean forward further to see a young girl texting on her phone. Once I got her attention she responded with a disgusted look. Wow, what service. She hurried and gave me my order but also wanted me to pay again when I had already completed the transaction online. Spitz serves order-at-the-counter Greek food--kind of like a Daphne's but with bolder flavors, better ingredients and more fusion elements. This Spitz is relatively small. The inside is mostly the counter (both for ordering food as well as viewing their gelato), but they have a few indoor tables. They have more tables outside in the front patio, which features backyard porch furniture that is shaded. The cluttered feel, string of lights overheard and the plethora of vegetation give it a barbecue-at-a-friend's-house atmosphere. The menu at Spitz is affordable. Their specialty is their doner meals ($10 and under)--sandwiches or wraps with choice of protein filling, style (from mild flavors to spicy flavors) and a side (fries, fried pita strips with hummus, etc.), and a soft drink. Some styles come with more ingredients and require an extra charge (some sides cost extra too like the sweet potato fries). I went with the sandwich that was featured in Los Angeles Magazine. I opted for the classic doner (a lamb and beef mix / gyro) sandwich with lettuce, tomato, onion, green pepper, cucumber, tzatziki sauce, and chili sauce on foccaccia bread. I went with the spicy style and paid the extra cost for the sweet potato fries. When you pass on the soft drink here, you get a larger side. The bread was fresh; so were the veggies, which were crisp. The sauce was spicy but not too much. And the lamb and beef gyro tasted exactly as I expected. Still, I was not a huge fan of the sandwich. I didn't like the meat texture. I think part of it is due to how I am not a fan of gyro meat, which is too dry for me. Also, the focaccia bread was quite thick--too much bread. I prefer the lavash wrap to the bread. Still, the flavors here are bolder than what you will find at a Daphne's. I really liked the sweet potato fries at the Spitz in Little Tokyo, but I was a tad disappointed with this one. The fries were crisp and hot. They had a good flavor too and came with a spicy aioli-like sauce, but I just felt the batter/outside was not as good as my previous experience in Little Tokyo. I also had a side of falafel. The falafel, which sat on shredded lettuce and came with hummus, looked burnt. It actually was not though. It had a good crunchy outside (but not overly crunchy). The inside was warm, bready and flavorful. The hummus was cool and was a good accompaniment. If I came back to Spitz, I think I would get the falafel in a wrap. Service was pleasant and good. Organized too. Getting through the line took a little bit of time, but it was not too bad. There were signs posted throughout the restaurant on how they are making efforts to improve the efficiency and speed of service to handle the big crowds this small restaurant gets. Spitz has a following and if you've been interested in trying it, you should give it a shot (not expensive and everything tasted okay if not great). If you are a Daphne's regular, you should definitely make the drive to Spitz because you may end up liking this one more. Parking is available on the street. Personally, I've never really been a huge fan of Mediterranean food but I was pleasantly surprised with my experience here at Spitz! Located down Colorado Boulevard in Eagle Rock, Spitz is a humble little establishment that specializes in authentic Mediterranean cuisine with a contemporary twist for a pretty reasonable price. If you're ever planning on coming here I suggest ordering 3 things: 1). Classic Doner 2). Street Cart Fries 3). Chicken Doner These 3 are pretty much the mainstays of the restaurant and it is easy to see why from the very first bite. The Classic Doner and the Chicken Doner were both quite delicious and the meat were both cooked and seasoned to perfection. The Street Cart Fries however was my favorite out of everything that I tried there. Their portions are enormous and the fries were loaded with bell peppers, onions, cheese and many other unique Mediterranean flavors that I'm not so sure about but it definitely adds to the deliciousness of the fries. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my experience here at Spitz. Their unique approach to Mediterranean food in addition to the lively atmosphere truly makes this place one of the "best eats" Eagle Rock has to offer. "Meh" pretty much sums it up. I came with a sizable group on a Saturday around lunch time; there was plenty of outside seating available. I ended up getting the Street Cart Doner wrap (Beef & Lamb). I was a bit disappointed at the amount of meat I got. My picture looks deceiving; the center of the wrap had a decent amount of meat but the ends of the wrap were pretty skimpy. I could only taste the tortilla (who the hell pays to eat a wrap that only tastes like tortilla?) And it's quite expensive; almost $10 for just the Street Cart Doner wrap and it's not very filling. The Street Cart fries look pretty good; I might try those if I ever decide to come back. They do have an assortment of board games and and activities next to the condiments and drinks section, which is a nice touch. Oh and parking?? HA!! I was trying to think of what was wrong and why not to give this place 5 stars, I mean it is not fine dining or anything and the parking is a bit of an issue but the food, outside seating, service, staff friendliness and gelato were all perfect in my book. I had the original spitz doner sandwich with zesty sauce and sweet potato fries. Bread was perfect as were the fries and all the sandwich fillings. Then the gelato was super rich and amazingly flavorful, no air pumped in to cut it down, it was perfect texture and consistency. I would rank it above both scoops and bogarini for flavor and value. Certainly not my favorite Spitz location but not terribly bad. I guess having been introduced to Spitz from it's Los Feliz location (with a BAR) anything with less than that is a slight disappointment in my eyes. The set up here is much different and I think my frequenting of their other location influences my opinion. The food was good but something was just a wee bit different with my wrap this go around (almost soggy) which I have never experienced before. We sat on their back patio outdoors and I mentioned this place really felt fitting for the neighborhood, very Eagle Rock if that makes any sense at all. It's a much smaller place with limited parking. I love the Mediterranean donor without olives with spicy feta instead of regular and the street cart fries, hot damn! these are just phenomenal but $8 for them is a tad bit steep for them and they charge for any and all substitutions which I never really noticed before. I guess price isn't an issue when I dine in Los Feliz because the entire atmosphere of the place seems more like a complete experience than this location. We had a 10% off Yelp Check In and the last time I checked $1.79 was not 10% off of $29 but hey I'm no mathematician. When I asked for them to glance over the check, the staff member simply mentioned she couldn't "do the math" so I dropped it all together. 2 hungry litte bears (my brother and I) came FAMISHED to Spitz in hopes of filling our bellies with tons of meat and mediterranean flavors! Truthfully, we were both craving Zankou Chicken but didn't want to tempt ourselves with the large portions!!! I ordered the Chicken Wrap (a la carte) ($7) - got a WRAP instead of a sandwich to save myself a few calories.. and choose the "original sauce" (a cucumber yogurt sauce), figuring you can't go wrong with the OG flavors :) haha and it was pretty good! The wrap was light and refreshing. The chicken was thinly sliced, tender, and flavorful. The only problem was that I was still hungry afterwards.. and for $7 I expected more than this measly wrap filled basically with ice berg lettuce.. My brother LOVES lamb so he ordered the Classic Doner meal ($10.50) which comes with thinly sliced beef/lamb. He choose to have his doner with the street meat sauce (a little spicy) and focaccia bread (instead of the wrap).. making his a nice hearty sandwich :) The meal comes with a drink + side.. which he choose sweet potato fries.. an excellent choice I must say! :) I stole them all! I've been to their second location in Little Tokyo, but for some reason, this location's tastes better, but I'm not sure if it's the overly trendiness of LT that leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. What can beat patio seating? There's something for everyone with their many takes on lamb, chicken, and beef. I've tried their wrap and the 'mediterranean' style (on focaccia bread), and I've been sticking to their sandwiches ever since. Go with friends so you can have the best of both worlds- sweet potato fries and pita strips. If not, order both for yourself! I sure as hell won't judge. My first visit to Spitz was three years ago in Little Tokyo. I'd long forgotten what I'd eaten there so when we were in the area, I suggested this for dinner. This location, in contrast to the one in Japantown, does not serve alcohol and is brightly lit with plenty of patio seating, as well as indoor seating. Each table has boardgames like Battleship, Checkers, and Jenga, which I thought was pretty neat. You order at the counter, grab a number, and they bring your food to you. I got their most popular wrap, the Street Cart Döner ($8.25), combo'd it and added on Street Cart Fries for $3. All sandwiches and wraps come with romaine, onion, cucumber, green pepper, tomato, tzatziki, and chili sauce. My wrap also included garlic aioli, fried lavash chips, and chicken. The fries had similar ingredients, but I preferred it much more over the wrap. I could only finish half of it as the flavors were very bold and a little too much for me. I don't know if this is worth mentioning, but these wraps will for sure leave you farting all night. Not even kidding. Service was short and unfriendly. The cashier was completely stone-faced and never once smiled, which was very different from the staff over in Little Tokyo. Not sure I'd come back... Maybe Mediterranean food just isn't for me. I'd forgotten just how good the Classic Doner Kebabs were until I took my first bite of one in a long time. This is a great example of someone with vision making something special out of a simple concept, and there's a nice story about the history of the place you can read in other reviews. There's certainly nothing particularly innovative about the food, but it's filling, served at a decent price and best of all it tastes delicious. The Doner itself has a wonderful flavor, full of character and mystical spices. You can have it as either a wrap or in a pita and they both have their charms although a prefer the wrap. The french fries here are almost perfect, Slaw Dogs over in Pasadena should take a page from the Spitz cookbook and steal the recipe. They have a nice combo plate for about $10 which is more than a typical fast food joint, but not bad for a mid priced lunch. There is a nice patio with ample seating and a pleasant feel to it as well as a few inside tables. It also gets quite busy during peak lunch hours. There is also a more upscale version with hipper decor in Little Tokyo downtown, but this is the original and the best. Along with places like the nearby Oinkster, Eagle Rock has some great finds. Still not sold on the name, I mean naming a place after a big loogie is a little odd. I jest of course, but then it's still nowhere near as interesting or with the funny connotations as Wurstkuche. Ugh. I have now given all Spitz locations a chance and liked none of them. I really want to like them as Doeners are one of my favorite foods and they actually call them that, not gyro or shawarma Still, it could not be further from the right thing. For starters, no Doener is served in a wrap, ever. And the wrap at Spitz really sucks. Like newspaper really, in texture and flavor. The meat, not very much of it is very off in seasoning, size and how its prepped. They got our order wrong, no sauce for the man, he got sauce, no veggies for the kid, he got veggies, and no one to check on us so they picked around and ate some. Kinda' expensive for what you get. The prices are definitely inflated and the food is mediocre. And the portions are a bit small. We got a Classic Doner Focaccia Sandwich with Pita Chips, the Classic Doner Wrap, and the Doner Plate. The Doner Plate totally confused me. It was like a salad with globs of Tzatziki, Hummus and Chili Sauce, with bits of chicken thrown in with some Pita Strips, a Falafel ball, and fries...??? The plate was totally inauthentic, the flavors a jumble, and it made no sense to me whatsoever. The Wrap and Sandwich was okay; nothing exciting but not bad. Their fries were good, perfectly fried and crispy. And I love the little spicy yellow chili they have at the condiment bar. They remind me of hole-in-the-wall hamburger places I grew up with. I love burgers but I can only eat them for lunch so many times. I had 30 minutes to spare today and I headed over to Spitz. Name is disgusting, but the food is great! Anyway, I got the Doner Chicken wrap with a sweet potato fries and a drink. The whole meal costs $10 and some change. I got home opened the container. Holy cow, this thing was too beautiful to eat. I devoured the wrap and the fries like it was my last meal on death row. The chicken wrap was so flavorful. I had it street style so you can taste the garlic aioli and cucumbers. The garlic was just right and cucumbers gave it that "fresh" taste. It also came with Lavash. I have no idea wtf that is but it was tasty. I killed the wrap with no problem. It was a rainy day hungry and was coming back from Sotheby's Pasadena when I needed food.... The birdmn and I stop in to spitz a place we have pass many many times but never noticed. The smell of the meat was great making my stomach begin to growl for tasty eats. Hungry I order the Beef Doner with a side of street Cart fries and coke. While they begin to total up my bill I check-in and find that there is a 10% of bill coupon... We sit down and minutes later my food arrives the Doner wraps are huge the fries are more than I imagined visually so I dig in to the fries "WOW" so many flavors I can't stop feeding them into my mouth!!! I get half way into the fries and decide it's time for the Doner....I bite man huge flavor the shaved beef reminds me of a Turkish Gyro shack in Kaiserslautern Germany... ..... Mid way through the meal my baby texts me that she is hungry... I am like ok I need to finish fast and make like I'm hungry so we can get her fed.... I finish the meal and thank the staff for the hospitality... When I arrive to my baby I could not mask the smell of guilt covered in tsasiki and garlic with a hint of spice :) I try with gum lots of gum and stories of a meal earlier in the morning... I really wanted to like this place more. Idk why I just didn't connect with the food. Layout is perfect. Workers are awesome. Ambiance is near perfection with seating layouts and nice patio lighting. For anyone who is of Middle Eastern decent, they damn well know exactly what I'm saying here, to put it into perspective, its like pouring water instead of milk for your cereal when you work at a farm that has endless amount of cows and fresh milk by the hour. Literally. Back to the lavash, it just left my mouth dry, the greens and salad inside the wrap were way too dry and took away too much flavor from the meat. Vegans and vegetarians do not fret bc they have those options available for you as well so make sure to try it out. The only other thing I eat here is the donor salad w/ chicken. We placed an order a couple of hours before our pickup and it wasn't ready on the pickup time that was generated which see like a small thing but on set it's large wasted time is everything and we had to wait minimum 15 minutes for our order to be complete. We were told that the orders come out closer to the pickup time but I'm not sure what that time was being that I'm feeding more than 10 people. Thanks to having a niece attending school in Eagle Rock, we've had reason to visit the neighborhood and discover some fantastic eateries. Spitz has been on our radar for some time and our meal today lived up to the hype. My husband ordered the street cart Doner with mixed meat and a side of sweet potato fries. He gave his food a thumb's up for being very delicious and a good-sized serving. Enough to make him take a food coma nap after returning home. Our niece had a Doner basket which looked wonderful and was a big serving. If we make a return visit, I'd order this. There were so many components to this basket! Oh man. You're missing out on life if you haven't tried spitz. The street cart fries are seriously the freakin bomb-diggity! It's like fries on crack. Crispy thin cut fries topped with a bunch of fresh ingredients that complimented each other really well. Add some sriracha for an extra kick. I also got the classic doner sandwich. It was just okay. The bread they use was nice a toasty but I felt like it was missing something. Next time I'll just go with the wrap. Overall, I enjoy the chill vibe and food here. Had the mixed meat (beef lamb chicken) sandwich wrap and it tasted fine. Would it bring me back maybe just to try the pure chicken wrap. Pita bread tasted a bit hard, not that I mind hard wrap bread but maybe a day old... I may be wrong. Their fries were awesome though, very crispy and the spread was fantastic, I placed it on my wrap for extra flavor. Parking has 3 spots plus 1 handicap slot. Street parking is possible but limited. Staff was great. Plenty of patio seating and about 4 tables inside. read more

So we ordered 3 wraps for delivery and there was a big, black, dead fly in the wrapped up sandwich!!!! I mean, that's disgusting & unacceptable. I know this review will not effect their overall rating and that sucks, but at least I warned you. Also I just called & spoke to the manager about it, and his reply was "I'm sorry, but it does happen sometimes" ewww. Really, how often does this happen that you just brush it off like that?? Been here once right after I came back from Germany (Turkish fast food galore over there). I kept raving to my sister about how amazing Döners are and how cheap they were in Germany so of course that piqued her interest. Parking is street parking so good luck with that! There's indoor and outdoor seating but not many seats so good luck with that too. Employees were super nice. TZATZIKI SAUCE was extraordinary. And those STREET CART FRIES. Man. Out of this world. I'd come back for the fries over and over again. Compared to the Döners in Germany, the ones here are expensive as heck but that's understandable. Basic economics. Lots of Turks in Germany = lots of Turkish and Döner carts = more competition = competitive prices. On the other hand, here in SoCal, there's little to no Döner places so Spitz gets all the customers. Great business. More power! read more

Don't bother ordering ahead or going there unless you have an hour to kill waiting around. It won't be ready for pick up in time anyway. Service sucks. When did this place open and why was I not informed?! I drove by this place on Sunday and nearly rearended the car in front of me. The tell-tale umlaut took me back home. I went back on Monday for a bite, but that was their Ruhetag. Sadness. But! Today I went there and had the classic with extra tzatziki (and not it's not "ta zee kee" it's "tsat tsee kee"). The staff assured me that, while not owned or run by Germans, it was owned & run by people who used to live in Germany. In Germany, this is like pizza: it's fast food, every place does it slightly differently, but there are certain standards you can count on. Spitz' do:ners are a little small, but very filling. And, they don't skimp on the meat. The tzatziki is definitely worth the trip into Eagle Rock (it's hard to find good tzatziki!). I'll have to go back for their falafals. I grew up eating falafals at dner kebab places. The chicken do:ner is also one I'd like to try. Great great great place. Parking is limited but it's walking distance from a huge lot (for the mall). read more

A solid 3.5 stars. The food is pretty good, but the prices are a little higher than what I would expect. I got the Street Cart doner with falafel, and my only problem was that it was very saucey and salty. My wrap was drenched in sauce and the olives also made my wrap very salty. I couldnt finish my food. My brother got the doner with pommes, and he was very happy and satisfied with his food. His wrap didnt have too much sauce, so maybe they messed up on my wrap. The ambiance is very chill and clean. I can imagine myself grabbing lunch with a friend here and catching up. The outdoor patio area is very nice and clean. An inconvenience I faced when coming here was the parking. There are only 3 parking spaces available........ So if any of those spots aren't available, you're probably going to have to find street parking nearby. read more

Well Its a cool vibe spot with decent choices of beverages so for the place I give it 3.5 as it drops a .5 cause there is no parking. Now the chicken Doner. It was a good size wrap BUT filled with cabbage and very very little chicken. If I had to guess probably about 2 to 3 oz. Taste was just ok also but when you pay $14 for just the Doner itself, it better be good. It was not! Maybe the other dishes were better but if your craving Chicken, stay away. read more
