Located near the bustling intersection of 16th and Market Streets in the Castro neighborhood of San Francisco, Starbelly is the epitome of a neighborhood gem where locals congregate for their signature brunches on their highly regarded backyard patio, and people from out of town are familiar with their homespun yet still elevated takes on classic comfort food. I had been to Starbelly once before, as an invited guest of a special event that they were hosting showcasing the aforementioned back patio, now over a full decade later I was back mainly due to the fact that Starbelly was participating in San Francisco Restaurant Week in which local restaurants offer diners a prefix meal of three courses sold at an affordable price. This way, diners, both locals and out-of-towners can experience a popular restaurant without breaking the bank, and support a local establishment; making it a win-win for everyone! From my recollections, Starbelly has not participated in San Francisco Restaurant Week in quite some time, so when I saw that they were taking part in it this year, I jumped at the chance to entertain a group of diners and I one weeknight evening. Reservations were super easy to make via the Yelp app, and when I finally arrived, they were packed with customers, which only reiterated how popular they are with locals. Although their back patio is well regarded at Starbelly, being sat right next to the entrance at night with the cold air rushing through the open door wasn't the most ideal of situations. The menu at Starbelly is separated into sections including Snacks, Salads, Small (or Appetizers), Sides, Pizza, and Plates (or Entrées). Of course, we came for restaurant week and it provided all of these menu items sold at a more affordable price point as we were already dining on three courses. For my appetizer course, I ordered their Pumpkin Dumplings, which were served with brown butter, sage, pumpkin seeds and shaved garan. Others in my party ordered their Mix Chicories Salad which was topped with persimmon, pomegranate, pumpkin seeds and goat feta; and their House Made Chicken Liver Pâté, which was served with buttered bread, sweet onion marmalade and grain mustard. To start our meal, we shared their House Cut Fries which were served with three dips. For our entrées, I ordered their Grilled Bavette Steak, which was served with crispy plantains, nopales, and an heirloom tomato salad topped with a spicy peanut salsa matcha. Others in my party ordered their Sumac Seared Hawaiian Tombo Tuna, which was served with a white butter bean puree, grilled little gems and topped with a green olive salsa. For our dessert course, I ordered their Warm Toffee Cake which was served with a dollop of mascarpone and medjool dates. Others ordered their Salted Caramel Pot de Crème, which was served with cornmeal-rosemary cookies; and their Arborio Rice Pudding, which was served with brandy soaked cherries. Our food did take a while to come out, as it was very busy. The highlights were definitely the appetizer courses, as the Pumpkin Dumplings and Liver Pâté were not only excellently plated, but they were each lovingly crafted and we each could have had that dish as a main course and be satisfied. I really liked the spicy kick that my Bavette Steak had, but the Tombo Tuna was served a little too lukewarm for my fellow diners taste. The Toffee Cake was super sweet, and the rice pudding wasn't what my fellow diners expected it would taste like, so take that for what it's worth. Of particular note, they were gracious enough to take our Fries off of our final bill when we commented that they were all remnant pieces of potato, and not what we were expecting. The total bill for five diners was $256.62, after tax, but before gratuity was added in, which was reasonable, considering how many courses of food we enjoyed this evening. With the perfect meal for our large group, Starbelly has definitely become a local institution where diners can enjoy the comforts of home in an welcoming setting, and I for one am so glad they have thrived in the Castro neighborhood for so many years! read more

Had a reservation for 2 on a Sunday night at 5:30, plenty of space, so I was seated immediately. The space has a really nice dimmed lighting, creating a great intimate space for small groups. Ordered the broccoli rapini, flavor was great but a bit salty and extremely oily. Asked for half vegan cheese on the pizza and they accommodated! It was really good, crispy and thin crust just how I like it! Managed to finish all of it with 2 people. Dined with two friends after work this evening. I arrived first, was promptly greeted and offered indoor or patio seating. During the walk to peruse different tables, I was asked how my evening was going so far. Not having any food or drink yet, I knew right then that I was going to love Starbelly. I chose the heated and covered patio and my friends joined soon after. We ordered a variety of delicious dishes for sharing. They really do have something for everyone here! My favorites included the pan roasted mussels, butternut squash dumplings, fresh spaghetti, bacon pizza, and the date and toffee cake (served warm!). I visited Starbelly last night. My friend made the reservation a couple weeks ago and I immediately knew what I was going to order. My favorite dish...the dish I've ordered many times over the past 10+ years...the Spaghetti with Starbelly Bacon and Jalapeños. I thought about it all week and looked forward to Friday dinner. I arrived, glanced at the menu and imagine my DISAPPOINTMENT and SADNESS to learn that my favorite dish is no longer on the menu. A week of delightful anticipation extinguished in a moment. Easy to get a table for Sunday brunch. There is parklet seating and a huge backyard seating for outdoors then inside tables and a bar as well. Chilaquiles were a good portion and tasty. Would have been better with more spice or a salsa. Side salad was mildly dressed and nice to have greens with the meal. Lychee cocktail was pleasant but I wish there was more flavor to it. My friend pointed out that apart from pizza and burgers and some salads, there aren't many options especially with the one fish item being unavailable. Probably should have made reservations on a Sunday evening, but thankfully, some seats opened up at the bar and they were able to seat us pretty quickly. We had the chicken liver pâté, which was out-of-this-world! That grilled bread was so good all on its own and paired with the pâté, fresh mustard seeds, and jam/jelly on the side just knocked it out of the park. I can't say enough great things about Starbelly! The atmosphere is always spot-on, service is wonderful, and the food never disappoints. I've been coming in regularly for a while now, and it's always exciting to try their new menu items and, of course, the cocktails. They have some fantastic staples and their seasonal drinks are consistently delicious. Walked in here to get brunch on a Sunday, and ended up waiting for about half an hour, which was decent given the popularity of this place. We ordered a couple cocktails to begin with, and they came out p quick. Taste was a solid 7/10 on both. Next we got the fish tacos, french toast and a dish called the loco moco, which is essentially a beef patty topped with a runny egg. The fish tacos were crunchy, fatty, and made helluva brunch. The french toast tasted super satisfying, but the amount of calories on that plate, my god. The loco moco was a good balance, and the patty was cooked as I had asked for, the egg had a nice mouthfeel, and the rice made it a complete dish. The portion sizes on each was good, and is enough for an adult, unless you go splitsies. The waitstaff was warm and the ambience was very welcoming. I've been to Starbelly perhaps a dozen times at this point and while it's generally decent, but there's always something that prevents it from being a uniformly good experience -- either you get the surliest twink in the Castro as your waiter, they get your order wrong, or they bring the wrong food to your table. The food itself is pretty good, however the quality of the pizza is too inconsistent for me to recommend it. It's best as brunch spot, I recommend chilaquiles. The back patio is enjoyable, as is sitting outside of the restaurant in the front where you can watch the goings on, on the street. Bottom line: Starbelly is a good common denominator, able to satisfy, is not please, everyone in a group. If it got its act together more, it could become one of the best restaurants in the Castro. read more

It felt very impersonal and at the end of the meal our server didn't know how to use the payment machine which I thought was strange so we ended up having to combine some items instead of split. Do note that they take reservations by phone if you have a larger party. The brunch menu has classic American brunch dishes with some more unique options. The Fried Chicken & Waffles has to be my favorite. It comes with two large portions of flavorful and crispy fried chicken sandwiched between fluffy buttermilk waffles. It's flavorful and filling. The farmhouse eggs with potatoes and bacon is also a good option. Their potatoes and bacon are very crispy, which I enjoyed. The venue was cute and spacious. The service could have been a bit better, however. We received the incorrect order and it took a bit for it to be corrected. The food was then sent to another table rather than being discarded. Great Place, But Not 2 Deviled Eggs for $15! We really enjoyed the mussels with frites appetizer, salmon and chicken for our entrees and sorbet for dessert. Those were great. However, the 2 deviled egg appetizer was disappointing. They had a sour taste and cost $15. I guess we didn't realize that for the price there were only 2 eggs. The service was really good. I have only good things to say about this place! The menu has traditional American dishes like pizzas and burgers, and they also offer a great selection of cocktails to accompany your meal. We started with some appetizers - the first we got was the chicken liver pate, which came with bread and 3 delicious spreads. At some point we ran out of bread and still had leftover spreads, and they were kind enough to just give us extra bread without any charge. They really figured their pizzas out! We got the margherita pizza as well as the star belly bacon pizza, and they were both fantastic choices. What really sold me was the crust, it was just the right thickness and crunch - it may just be my own personal preference - and honestly this was some of the best pizza I've had in SF which I was not expecting at all. The star belly bacon pizza was really good - I thought I would take issue with the amount of arugula they put on top of the pizza but it ended up being the perfect amount! The cocktails are also great and the menu offers a wide variety. We were seated in this kind of outdoor area which had excellent natural lighting and great greenery/decor. Even though the place was kind of full, we were able to get all of our dishes pretty quickly which is a huge plus. Especially with the drinks it was no more than a 5 minute wait from ordering to having the drink in my hand. Their regular entrees are probably really good, but if you are going with a group I would recommend going with the pizzas because of the taste and the low cost (though everything on the menu was pretty reasonably priced). read more

The quality of the food has noticeably deteriorated. This used to be a solid neighborhood spot, but we had to return both our pizza and the salmon. The pizza was drenched in sauce and meat, and the salmon came out more like a mix between a salad and a soup. Our server was very helpful and accommodating and offered to replace the dishes with chicken and a salad. Unfortunately, the chicken was covered in an overly salty sauce, and the salad was dominated by dressing. The atmosphere is still casual and very good. My gf ordered the Strawberry Alarm Clock and I asked the waiter if they could make me something with Scotch, and they brought me Penicillin (the cocktail, not the antibiotic). Both were on point - and I was especially pleased with the Penicillin because this was not on the menu (but the waiter was correct that they had great bartenders ay Starbelly). For appetizers, we shared garlic fries and sweet potato dumplings. Also on point. Fries were hot and sufficiently garlicky, and unlike what appears to be popular at most restaurants, these were thicker fries (almost steak fries) that nonetheless maintained a slight crisp (without being crunchy) - anyway, they were above average. The dumplings were magic, savory and smooth with a touch of sweetness and great mouthfeel. I ordered a steak and my gf ordered a burger. My steak was good, if a bit more cooked than I wanted (I asked for medium-rare, and it was on the well done side of medium). The mashed potatoes that came with it were smooth as silk and tasted wonderful and the brussels made for an excellent sidekick. The burger was solid. As for non-edibles, the wait staff was lovely and the space is great. We sat inside, which had light and tasteful holiday decorations, but the patio looked cool, too. Starbelly is one of those places that feels like home away from home. It is on the intersection in the Castro neighborhood and there is street parking available on the weekdays. Finding parking was easy and we were able to walk around to see some shops. Arriving at happy hour, there is a display with a huge array of drinks behind the counter. We were greeted by the happy manager Adam and we encountered a couple who told us that Starbelly's pizza is something to die for. Starbelly provided some cool tones inside. My friend and I sat in the patio that has a covering on the top with star decorations on the walls. It was nice that the heater was on. Some nights in San Francisco can get pretty chilly. The server Chris (I hope I spelled their name correctly) was very kind and inviting. She was very patient when we asked about specific ingredients from the menu. My friend went for the burger and fries during happy hour and I ate margarita pizza. The couple was right. The pizza was fantastic and it wasn't salty compared to some places I have visited in San Francisco. The French fries were crunchy and I love it. I think what makes this place so attractive is that people like Adam and Chris make sure that your experience is memorable. In tough days or just an exploration, they invite you to return to their humble and charming restaurant. A nice dining experience was ruined by a rude bartender on Friday, Oct 4th, at around 7PM. I ordered a Sidecar, and he made a drink that was not a Sidecar but insisted he did very rudely. The patron sitting next to me tapped me on the shoulder and said "that is not a side car" you are right. The other, much taller bartender, also looked at that drink and listed off the correct sidecar ingredients. So the shoulder by tender took my drink so ashley, he spilt it on the bar and stormed off and when he came back.I said, please make me a manhattan.Since you cannot make a side car. Again, he stated "I made you a sidecar!" Such a foolish thing to do with the customer. When I told him he was wrong and his co.Worker told him he was wrong, but he would not admit he did not know how to make the drink. It's been a while since I've last visited Starbelly and so I decided to stop by during restaurant week for their amazing $15 lunch deal! Turns out however that the deal was only for M-F, but we figured we'd give the brunch menu a try since we were already here. The menu is rather small but has a good variety of items including egg dishes, pizzas, fried chicken sandwich, etc. There was also a drinks list with some tasty sounding cocktails that were pretty affordable compared to other spots, though we did not try any this time. We ended up trying the asparagus pizza, asparagus and spring onion soup, and fries. The pizza was definitely large enough to feed two people with moderate appetites and I liked the more subtle flavors paired with the salty meat. My favorite part was the crust which was thin and crispy! Only gripe would be the amount of oil, there were a few times when the oil would spill into my hand while eating it - with that said, the oil did add good flavor. The soup was nice and creamy without being too heavy - I liked that it wasn't overly salted and really let the asparagus shine. The fries could have been a bit more crisp for my liking - they're reminiscent of in-n-out fries. We ordered the primavera salad with chicken and the burger. Primavera was very basic and chicken was dry, but no major complaints. Burger was fine, fries were stale tasting.
