The indoor seating gives you the option to sit communally or at your own table, which is nice depending on the mood. The food menu is perfect for sharing--whether you're in the mood to split a few small plates or have your own entrée. Everything I've tried has been consistently flavorful and well-prepared. The drink selection, while a bit limited, still manages to hit the mark every time. My only minor gripe is that as someone allergic to egg yolk, some of the egg-based dishes don't offer substitutions, especially during brunch. That said, I keep coming back because the lunch and dinner menus have more variety and are always solid. Definitely a neighborhood favorite with good energy and reliable food. read more

Came in the other night after work for happy hour and a quick bite. Our server Robbie was so funny and great on answering questions about the food & menu drinks. Ordered several rounds of drinks, got there at the start of happy hour and had plenty of time to sample different items. Ordered a salad which was amazing and a happy hour burger! OMG I sat quietly eating this wonderful burger not engaging with anyone at the table. I'm salivating just thinking about it again . We've been wanting to try this place out but our experience was ruined by the service. Our waiter seemed miserable from the start and acted like we were an inconvenience rather than customers. He didn't greet us at all, and after seating us, he disappeared for a long time without taking our order or checking in with us. Had dinner at Starbelly and as always, the ambiance, staff, and drinks were all solid. The Starbelly Salad remains a favorite. Tried the vegan pot pie this time and was a little disappointed. It came as more of a bowl of filling with a puff pastry rectangle placed on top rather than the fully wrapped version they used to serve. It lost that classic pot pie feel. We had brunch here recently. We drive by often and were always curious about this place. We were very happily surprised at what a nice place it is. The food was delicious and very well presented. I got the chicken sandwich and my wife got something unique. We also had specialty cocktails. Overall, I'm looking forward to going back and taking some photos of the picture worthy dishes. They also offer a nice cozy backyard space as well as street seating. The street seating looks more like an overflow area. The inside and the backyard are the nicer seating areas in my humble opinion. Consistently delicious and packed on a Tuesday night! We sat on high chairs and the tables wobble, so the kind waiter helped make them stable. There's also outdoor seating with heat lamps and more space in the back indoor patio. The staff was so accommodating as I had to add more guests to our reservation but everyone was so kind and quick to help on the phone. Located in the Castro, Starbelly offered a great experience! The food, atmosphere and service were all great! We came around 4:30pm so we were offered the "limited menu" that goes on from 3-5pm. For drinks we ordered the Honey Lavender Lemonade and Ginger Turmeric, I LOVED the lemonade. It had the perfect amount of sweetness and was super refreshing! Next, We ordered the white bean dip with grilled flat bread and The fries with 3 dips to start. The white bean dip was amazing! I've never tried anything like it before but was left wanting more! The fries were nothing special, pretty standard but the sauces were nice to try. As our entree we ordered The Margarita pizza and the Starybelly pizza. Margherita was delicious, but similar to most i've tried. The Starbelly pizza was amazing. I've always loved Pixar movies, and Ratatouille has been a favorite of mine for a long time. Little did I know it was more of a documentary than a work of fiction. I always thought of myself as a fan of Remy the mouse and considered him the protagonist. I went to Starbelly with my date and we were planning on trying the restaurant week menu. We've been before and sat inside during a night of bustling service, so tonight we decided to sit in the cozy outdoor dining area, which is a cabin-like covered patio with string lights and hanging plants. The appetizers were ok. The toast with the liver pâté was burnt, and the ravioli was tasty but only consisted of two or three small bites. The main courses came out - I got a steak over plantains and my date had a pork chop over asparagus. The steak dish was really bland but things were about to get spicy and exciting in this restaurant. I was going to ask the waiter for salt and pepper to make it easier to eat, when I felt some tickling on my knee. I figured my date was getting a little frisky, which surprised me because we had only been here for 30 minutes, and usually she waits until either I am really tired or a movie we're watching is getting interesting before making a move. I look down at my leg and saw a little mouse crawling over me. The mouse ran away to another table. My date got jealous and accused me of letting "just any old creature" touch on me. I had to explain that I didn't invite this mouse and had no dating history with this mouse. I had never met this mouse before and don't even know that many mice. She then brought up that my Facebook relationship status is still listed as single, even though she is fully aware that I am locked out of my Facebook. As we continued to argue, another mouse ran across the ground by my feet. I suddenly realized that I am no different from all of the humans in Ratatouille who consider mice as villains, and in the glossy beady eyes of a mouse, I am the villain. The wait staff couldn't be bothered with us during our time here so there wasn't much chance to comment on the food or mice, or make any sort of request or indication about the experience at Starbelly. I told my date I don't think mice should be in restaurants, and because I took that stance she took the opposite side. She contended that mice are to be expected here and there is nothing they could possibly do about it. I insisted that semi-outdoor dining is not camping, and we should assume that mice wouldn't be touching us during our meal. When we disagree, I find it is better to wait until her sister or mom are in town and we can both make our case to them so they can serve as both judge and jury on the matter. Once our heels were dug in, we decided to take our desserts to go. They ended up giving us the wrong desserts in the boxes which I can understand, because they are probably busy dealing with a significant mouse problem in the back of house. Perhaps the mice I saw got to my dessert before they could box it up so they threw in whatever else was handy instead. The difference between Starbelly and Ratatouille is that in the movie, the mice make the food better. At Starbelly, the mice aren't allowed to season the food and instead serve to entertain the guests. If I come back, I'll put my cat on a harness and bring it with me so that both of us can have a meal involving mice. read more

I suppose it should've been a clue that this place isn't super impressive that I was able to get an immediate reservation on my way there. When I arrived, I was seated promptly and given water. However, no one came to take my order for at least 15 minutes. I ordered scambled eggs with potatoes, toast, and bacon and orange juice and coffee to drink. The server asked if I wanted cream and sugar, then forgot to bring them. My orange juice arrived well after my food. The eggs were overcooked, in my opinion. The rest of the food was tasty, but nothing special. The coffee mug had a visible coffee film on the inside, and it did come off if touched with a fingertip, so I'd say their dishwashing needs improvement. It had a nice custard texture and I could taste the richness in the dish. The mascarpone was a nice and unique addition to the dish. While everything was flavorful, I will say that I left feeling a big hungry since the portions were a bit small. This place offers a good array of options, especially for brunch (salads, sandwiches, etc.). The price point is reasonable and the setting is a lively. Located near the bustling intersection of 16th and Market Streets in the Castro neighborhood of San Francisco, Starbelly is the epitome of a neighborhood gem where locals congregate for their signature brunches on their highly regarded backyard patio, and people from out of town are familiar with their homespun yet still elevated takes on classic comfort food. I had been to Starbelly once before, as an invited guest of a special event that they were hosting showcasing the aforementioned back patio, now over a full decade later I was back mainly due to the fact that Starbelly was participating in San Francisco Restaurant Week in which local restaurants offer diners a prefix meal of three courses sold at an affordable price. This way, diners, both locals and out-of-towners can experience a popular restaurant without breaking the bank, and support a local establishment; making it a win-win for everyone! From my recollections, Starbelly has not participated in San Francisco Restaurant Week in quite some time, so when I saw that they were taking part in it this year, I jumped at the chance to entertain a group of diners and I one weeknight evening. Reservations were super easy to make via the Yelp app, and when I finally arrived, they were packed with customers, which only reiterated how popular they are with locals. Although their back patio is well regarded at Starbelly, being sat right next to the entrance at night with the cold air rushing through the open door wasn't the most ideal of situations. The menu at Starbelly is separated into sections including Snacks, Salads, Small (or Appetizers), Sides, Pizza, and Plates (or Entrées). Of course, we came for restaurant week and it provided all of these menu items sold at a more affordable price point as we were already dining on three courses. For my appetizer course, I ordered their Pumpkin Dumplings, which were served with brown butter, sage, pumpkin seeds and shaved garan. Others in my party ordered their Mix Chicories Salad which was topped with persimmon, pomegranate, pumpkin seeds and goat feta; and their House Made Chicken Liver Pâté, which was served with buttered bread, sweet onion marmalade and grain mustard. To start our meal, we shared their House Cut Fries which were served with three dips. For our entrées, I ordered their Grilled Bavette Steak, which was served with crispy plantains, nopales, and an heirloom tomato salad topped with a spicy peanut salsa matcha. Others in my party ordered their Sumac Seared Hawaiian Tombo Tuna, which was served with a white butter bean puree, grilled little gems and topped with a green olive salsa. For our dessert course, I ordered their Warm Toffee Cake which was served with a dollop of mascarpone and medjool dates. Others ordered their Salted Caramel Pot de Crème, which was served with cornmeal-rosemary cookies; and their Arborio Rice Pudding, which was served with brandy soaked cherries. Our food did take a while to come out, as it was very busy. The highlights were definitely the appetizer courses, as the Pumpkin Dumplings and Liver Pâté were not only excellently plated, but they were each lovingly crafted and we each could have had that dish as a main course and be satisfied. I really liked the spicy kick that my Bavette Steak had, but the Tombo Tuna was served a little too lukewarm for my fellow diners taste. The Toffee Cake was super sweet, and the rice pudding wasn't what my fellow diners expected it would taste like, so take that for what it's worth. Of particular note, they were gracious enough to take our Fries off of our final bill when we commented that they were all remnant pieces of potato, and not what we were expecting. The total bill for five diners was $256.62, after tax, but before gratuity was added in, which was reasonable, considering how many courses of food we enjoyed this evening. With the perfect meal for our large group, Starbelly has definitely become a local institution where diners can enjoy the comforts of home in an welcoming setting, and I for one am so glad they have thrived in the Castro neighborhood for so many years! read more

Ordered the broccoli rapini, flavor was great but a bit salty and extremely oily. Asked for half vegan cheese on the pizza and they accommodated! It was really good, crispy and thin crust just how I like it! Managed to finish all of it with 2 people. Although I just realized that the arugula we ordered did not get added on top of the pizza and I forgot to mention it since we were so hungry!
