After waiting a few months to try this place, I finally caught them open. I always saw a crowd there and wondered what all the hub bub was all about. Unfortunately, I'm still wondering. I have never paid so much for breakfast before in my life. $14 french toast which consists of 1/3 of a baguette. Our bill for 2 people was $51. A coffee, a tea. A breakfast burrito that was cold, a cheeseburger scramble. Food no way compared to the price. Can't believe they are still open, with the coffee cup cafe right up the street. So, my first time here. I am a little weary due to the recent onslaught of negative reviews. I however, was greeted promptly. I think the key at this place is to be a little assertive and take initiative. Upon walking in, I began to approach where I wanted to sit...this will always garner the attention of service staff as sections and the even distribution of tables are of upmost importance. The service is friendly, albeit harried. This, I suppose is just the atmosphere of the restaurant. If you are already a high anxiety person, this restaurant will likely make you even more tense given the pace and rush of the servers...when they come by, you better be ready to order or risk getting passed up and ignored. That being said, I ordered the chicken-Apple sausage with eggs and polenta potatoes. As noted in other reviews, the wait is long for your food, especially considering eggs are a quick dish to prepare. When I began eating, I was sorely underwhelmed...the food wasn't bad, but it wasn't really that good, especially since it was $14 for a simple egg breakfast. Also, the polenta potatoes were not good at all. Polenta should not be crispy and burned! The whole appeal is its creaminess. Oh well, I will continue to search for a really delicious egg breakfast...so far, I have had no luck. read more

Great breakfast and service. The roast beef hash is da bomb dot com. I've had most things on their menu and it's delicious. The thing is you can only your eggs poached or scrambled. Nothing else. Portions are perfect (it's normal size, not large) and some might say it's on the price side. There's always a long wait so beware. Service is always excellent. read more

Easily at the top of my brunch list. I'm a sucker for bloody mary's and starling diner added the cherry on top to theirs in the form of a crab claw! So delicious! I ordered the smoked salmon eggs Benjamin I believe, & it was to die for. Also ordered the breakfast bruschetta, omg so sweet and flavorful, I definitely recommend it! The French toast is beyond words. I literally can't have French toast anywhere else after having theirs. Crispy I the outside and stuffed with mascarpone cheese, it's a must have. The Blue crab cakes with eggs is also to die for. Moist and full of flavor, you will savor every bite. Their eggs are never over cooked and although it's pricey, you get what you pay for! They also have delicious warm drinks like chai or green tea lattes. I don't drink coffee but I'm sure that's great too haha. Only down side is if you can't come on a weekday it gets very packed and parking can be a pain. Also don't forget they are closed on Mondays. The food here is great. But, it's always understaffed. Not enough waiters or bus staff so tables aren't turned and people wait to be seated when there are often several free un-bussed tables. If you have plenty of time and patience (for waiting to be seated and served, not for enjoying a leisurely meal), go for it. I've been in the LBC for about a year and a half and can't believe it took me this long to find the Starling Diner! So far, I highly recommend the crab cakes (served with a fresh microgreen salad), shredded pork scramble (think carnitas w/ your eggs!), and the (special) caprese-style omelet (mozzarella, basil, tomato...oh my!). And if the food isn't reason enough to try this joint, go for the people watching! I've only been there twice for weekend breakfasts, yet have seen the same hipster bring in two different girls. This made for a fun speculative conversation while we waited for our meals: is a Saturday night indie rock show followed by a walk-of-shame to breakfast his "usual"? This place is super close to home which is great. Very cute decor and friendly staff. the Chai latte is my favorite - I'll often stop in for that to go. The breakfasts are non-greasy, but I feel like they need a little more variety - I would love it if they offered a sweet/savory dish so you could mix it up and not spend $20 for one person. Oatmeal would be another option I would love, but you gotta go with what you do best. A lovely spot for breakfast - definitely try it! read more

I heard this place had great stuffed french toast, so decided to make the drive from Huntington Beach. So worth it! It's a small little place but everything was delicious and the service was friendly. I tried the bacon and cheese egg scramble with potatoes, which was great. Have eaten here twice.. I love the french toast. I love the salmon, brown rice and eggs. I also love their coffee, the pork and eggs had slivers of fat in it, but still had a great flavor. I did notice that the eggs tasted like the pasteurized egg-batter mix, which I found surprising, considering how thoughtful and creative their menu is. The place tucked in the middle of the neighborhood. The place is tiny but has a lot charm. There is a long wait about 30 minutes but it is worth it. There is plenty of menu items to choose from. I suggest trying their stuffed French toast or the roast beef hash or whatever the special is for the day. They have a wide selection of wine, a few cocktails. Sodas come in a can, no fountain drinks. They only serve breakfast and lunch. There is no private parking but there is plenty of street parking. The wait staff is quick and attentive. read more

Hands down, the best French toast I've ever had. Their water is mint-flavor, which was amazing. The only reason it didn't get a 5 star rating is because on the day we went the AC broke. Very popular with a young college aged crowd. It's a single room with no partitions so the noise level is high. They have a few outside tables to enjoy the sun. Split a Crab Cake sandwich and Stuffed French Toast with Cherry Sauce. The Crab Cake sandwich is moderate portion of 2 crab cakes served on a baguette. It was good and the crab cakes had good flavor, but for my tastes it was missing some sauce to bring it all together. It is served with simple salad mix, nothing fancy. The Stuffed French toast was all people kept raving about on Yelp so I ordered it..and it did not disappoint. It doesn't look too impressive, not what you'd expect since its a French Baguette, and not slices of bread, but the flavor does not disappoint. A very cute and refreshing diner! I went for brunch in the middle of the week so there was no line at all. The french toast came highly recommended and the had carmelized peaches as the special so how could I possibly turn that down?!?! It was definitely different since the bread was more like a roll than a slice from a loaf but it was still really good. Friday 2/27 @11am All the food was fantastic. The stuffed french toast was absoultely amazing, and the staff was friendly. Despite being a full house, table turnover was quick and our wait for a table was less than 15 minutes. I went here recently with my mom and to be more than honest, the service was very slow. There was a sign asking us to sign in before being seated and so we did. The food taste like heaven. I love the breakfast bruschetta with fresh berries. Even my no carb boyfriend loved it. I personally always get the Stuffed French Toast with Caramelized Apples because it hits the spot every time. Get there before 10am or you'll justifiably be waiting in line for some time. The french toast here is amazing. They use french baguettes stuffed with mascarpone and topped with heavy whipped cream. Just delightful! The coffee is good, perhaps a little weak (?), but it's smooth and compliments the food well. The service is awesome. The wait staff is very friendly and attentive. read more
