I made it home to Jersey this afternoon and immediately went to the State Line Diner in Mahwah with one of my big bro's and my sister-in-law. I moved to North Carolina 9 years ago and I miss my Jersey family, friends and DINERS!! My mom passed away right before I moved to North Carolina and the State Line Diner was one of our favorites places to have lunch. Good memoriesMy Greek salad was TD 4 ( to die for and my bro and sis in laws sandwich chicken salad club with homemade chips was divine! I love this place!

Standard diner fare at a well decorated diner close to the NY state border. They have a nice coffee menu with unique drinks. Service is fair, somewhat hurried and rushed, but accurate. Good amount of parking upfront.

Terrible. Absolutely just down right bad food. Our server was the sweetest lady however and she deserves the compliment however the slop they pass up as food coming out of this kitchen is down right nasty. I ordered pancakes and eggs, the pancakes were ehh nothing necessarily wrong with them but they weren't remotely great either. The sunny side up eggs however, down right disgusting. Look at the picture I provided and tell me how that made it out of the kitchen. Would I have gotten sick from that? Maybe maybe not, but it look extremely unappetizing to say the least. Should also be noted it took forever to get our pancakes and eggs on a Sunday night. In a state full of amazing diners (Oakland and candlewick are my favorite) this diner is an insult to the others. Do better. Please for the sake of diners and no and a reputation, do better.

Always a staple when in mahwah.

Repeat customers. Did not review last 2 trips. But consistently yummy classics. Chicken milanese wrap tonight with disco fries & a ice cold sam Adam's winter lager and a Cajun burger with a classic martini for the hubby! Our waitress Emily was great! Classic diner with a good menu

Burger Deluxe

Not all diners are the same. Got Steak cheesebuger deluxe . It had to be one of the better burgers I have had. $14.00. Most places $18.00 to $20.00. Also got carrot cake ,huge piece $5.50. Very clean place. Fast friendly service. Great food and very resonable prices. This one of the better diners around. Will be back.

I came here Wednesday night after work. As far as diners go, this one is OK. They have large dining room areas and a bar The servers are pleasant depending on who serves you they can be very responsive,. I ordered the French onion soup and chicken with cheese Panini. The soup was delicious a little salty. The chicken was overcooked and dry. but the Panini was just dry and I didn't enjoy it. I only ate half of it and threw the rest away. I've been here for breakfast a number of times and I have to say breakfast is much better than their dinners.

Old Fashioned Thick Challah Bread French Toast? I don't think so.

The advertise thick cut challah bread french toast was thinly sliced loaf bread. Extremely disappointing.

Though I reviewed this in 2021. My "staycation" to Ramsey to see the Perseid meteors was a failure but I enjoyed a late-night delivery of a massive Greek salad with anchovies. Today I got the breakfast sampler, a hefty offering with meticulously prepared eggs over medium. Great service. Glad to see a classic Jersey diner still going strong, especially one of the rare 24-7 holdouts.

Tons of parking in the lot. Great service. Full diner menu and alcohol available. Typical NJ diner ambiance and very good eggs and French toast. Gyro came with zucchini fries which was weird at first but we loved them.

Our server Francisco was not a talkative man, but he got the job done. We got chicken fingers for the kids immediately upon sitting down, and Francisco had them out quite quickly, which we appreciated. They also arrived on a bed of lettuce, for aesthetics. My wife and I also shared a buffalo chicken wrap, and a caesar salad with grilled chicken added. The former was not great, as it was more tomato than chicken, and desperately in need of some bleu cheese dressing. I would've taken ranch even. The salad however, hit the spot, and the massive amount of actually well seasoned and cooked grilled chicken was much appreciated. Just so you know, pay at the cash register by the door. Francisco never came back for my credit card.

The citrus scented wild rice was excellent too. ++++ Truffle Burger - Honestly, one of the BEST burgers I've had in a longggggg, longgggg time. Everything was perfect about it - the caramelized onions, gruyere on top, bacon, truffle aioli, and, of course, the burger itself. The patty was dripppping with juices with every single bite and cooked to medium excellence. Oh, and those truffle fries that came with it? To die for! Loved the thinness of them and there was PLENTY of it to go around. ++++ Kids Macaroni & Cheese with Fruit - Relatively simple, but the creamy kind of mac and cheese. Kids absolutely loved it. The fruits were just grapes and a few little slices of pineapple, which we would have liked a bit more of. ++++ Kids Cheeseburger and Fries - Burger was DEFINITELY, without a doubt cooked well-done. It was a bit on the tiny side, but we still split it between the kids. Once again, fries were fantastic and there was more than enough to share. ++++ Banana-Rama Smoothie - Strawberry, banana goodness. Could definitely tell this was not artificial from the "true" flavor of the smoothie. It wasn't super sweet. + Service was very good throughout the evening. ++++ Food came out shockingly fast and fresh. ++++ Our waiter was friendly, on point and came by to check on us a few times. + Plenty of space inside of the restaurant, including an outdoor-indoor tent that is heated. + Decor was modern and contemporary, very clean inside. + Ambiance for dinner was dark and intimate, which caught me off guard because I thought it would be more casual, but perfect for group gatherings still and casual dine-ins. + PLENTY of parking in the large lot in front and to the side of the restaurant, which is shared within a little strip mall. + They take reservations online. THE NOT SO GOOD ---------------------------- - Nada! MIXED THOUGHTS --------------------------- = Nada! RANDOM OBSERVATIONS -------------------------------------- = Dined from 5:45 - 7:15 PM on a Friday and most of the evening crowd was older and there weren't many families with kids. There were maybe 2-3 families with kids, but they left by 6:15 PM. Most of the groups were groups of 4, seemingly catching up during a nice meal. CONCLUSION -------------------- = I was pleasantly surprised by the experience we had here. I figured this would be a super casual Friday after work/school dinner with the fam, but this turned out to be one of the best meals we've had in North Jersey in a while. Food, service and ambiance here was excellent. Wish they had .5 stars on Yelp because Saddle River Cafe is as close to perfection as it can get at 4.5 stars!

Ever hear of a chicken with absolutely no wing?…read more Matthews Diner actually served one on a take-out order the other night, along with a chicken (as part of its "Baked Half-Chicken" entree) that was so dried out, charred and overcooked, tasteless, and tough to chew that it may well have been cooked on a previous day! Whenever it was cooked and/or reheated, it certainly was not fresh--and should never have been served to any customer...let alone, in our case, to an elderly woman who can no longer get to the restaurant due to mobility issues, but was so looking forward to a quality meal! Instead, she was given garbage from Matthews Diner--literally--that obviously could not be eaten. As for the missing wing, we can only assume that it was so burnt and charred in appearance that the cook, chef or whatever the person in Matthews kitchen can possibly be called decided to hack it off before it could be seen....and then put the remnants of the inedible chicken into the packaging for us to unknowingly purchase! Beyond the defrauding of a wonderful, elderly woman and longtime, now-former customer, does this restaurant have no shame? But the miserable treatment wasn't finished yet, as the reaction from owner/manager "Sam" when reached on the phone was that it was basically our tough luck! According to Sam--who offered no make-good or refund--we had the responsibility to open the packaged, wrapped up dinner tin and check what was in there thorougly before we bought the meal (really?)--as opposed to trusting the diner to check its own food and have quality standards! Sam then insulted my elderly mother (the senior-aged customer for whom the meal was purchased), and, before hanging up, said "Don't come here again!" Bud, you can rest assured that nobody in our family ever will.
