Subs hits the spot. It stands up well against many contenders and I find myself going here frequently when I'm in a sandwich mood although its proximity to my home has something to do with that. There are other sub shops that are better but they are farther and since subs is really quite good, I don't mind compromising. I've developed a comprehensive three category, 15 point score card for sub style sandwiches: Flavor: (4/5) Self explanatory. Usually quite good in this category. Occasionally I get a sub with its own foibles such as poor cheese or ingredient placement but nothing damning. Same goes for the consistency of condiment portions. I'll admit sometimes I'm a little picky about that last one. Too much mayo can really ruin it for me so, despite enjoying a thin, conservative layer of mayo on the right sandwich, I tend to leave it off here. Texture: (5/5) Nothing ruins a sandwich more than it becoming a soggy mess in 5 minutes while I walk to the park. Some sandwiches are partially exempt from this category, such as a meatball sub or chicken parm, as they're basically impossible to transport and should be eaten immediately. On the other hand, an over-toasted or unsuitable sandwich bread can shred your mouth an diminish your enjoyment. Subs sports the true king of sandwich breads, dutch crunch. This almost immediately gets a 5 point rating unless a sandwich is made with excessive liquid condiments (such as oil and vinegar) placed directly on the bread. I've no such problems here and have only had texture issues when foolishly trying to transport the Joe Dimaggio. I've only myself to blame here as this is a meatball sub (an excellent one at that!) which is a partially exempt sandwich in this category. Great job, Subs! Structural integrity: (3/5) Perhaps the most underrated scoring category in sandwich rating. I cannot begin to tell you how many subs I've ordered that end up being stressful to eat. A sandwich that falls apart, spills its contents or is difficult to hold or bite will receive poor marks in the category as it can impact my sammie-experience substantially. If you find yourself needing to constantly reconstruct your sandwich or, god forbid, resort to a fork and knife, are you really eating a sandwich or something else? I take this category seriously. Sadly, this is where Subs begins to suffer. Many of their sandwiches stand up just fine in this category, but many don't. I have watched my girlfriend's veggie sandwiches descend into a salad and two pieces of bread. I have lost avocado slices and tomatoes, even meats at times, to slight pressure. I would recommend keeping your sandwich wrapped while eating it. So Subs. 12/15 on Alex's Sandwich Score Card. This is a very respectable and serviceable score. Solid Sammies. I am the kind of guy that appreciates a good, solid, not terribly healthy but oh so delicious sandwich. After going by this place many times and seeing the great reviewes, I waited until I was good and hungry and finally made my way there. First thing that I noticed was that it was clear that the owner was behind the counter (always a plus). I asked him what a newcomer should order and he suggested the Godfather. Given my great love of the Godmother at Bay Cities Cafe in Santa Monica, I couldn't resist. Then, while waiting, two things happened that made me suspect the sandwich I was about to eat was going to be great. First, after a little consideration, the owner mentioned that I might want to add garlic sauce and hot sauce to the sandwich and that they were both homemade. Sold. Second, every customer than came in after me was greeted by name and were obviously frequent customers. Then, my sandwich arrived. A measure of a good sandwich is how well it stays together despite being covered in many sauces, sliding tomatoes, and shredded lettuce. This sandwich held together and now holds a little piece of my heart. Incidentally, I was also blessed by some dinner theater while I was there. One of the customers came in and had a 5 minute conversation with the owner about his disappointment that dutch crunch was the only bread available for a large sandwich that day. "The Best Subs In Town" - that's what Subs put on their big yellow store sign. Whoever thought of this marketing campaign must be pretty confident about the quality of their food before putting up such a bold statement. While I haven't tried all sandwiches places in the city yet - I would say their subs are indeed pretty legit. Placed a phone order before I went - when I arrived the sub was there already, and smooth checkout process. [Pastrami Rami (large with dutch crunch bead)] - A- "Pastrami, swiss, cole slaw, pickles, thousand island dressing" - this is the description on menu. Pretty generous on the amount of pastrami they put in; swiss was nicely melted and added some good smell to the sub. Thousand island and cole slaw enhanced each other's taste, and the sub as a whole was pretty juicy which I loved. Dutch Crunch bread was as good as it sounds. Pretty nicely done! I can't give 5 stars to a restaurant who claims themselves to be the best in town based on one sub I tried. So 4 stars for now; next time I need to try their Godfather sub which I heard it's one of their signature subs. Until next time! read more

This place is bomb af, period. My husband and I are in SF cuz he had to have surgery and needs to stay here for follow up care. The AirBnb we are staying in is close to this place. I wasn't sure what to expect, I'd figure it was like most sub places with thick bread and a crapload of fillings, but this place says a lot more with less. The subs were more like the size of paninis but totally satisfying. The "hot sauce" wasn't what I was expecting considering it's more like a green chopped chili condiment(?). Amazing nonetheless. By the way we don't eat meat so I can't vouch on those sandwiches, but vegetarians and/or vegans should be able to find something that suits their fancy. Heavenly. You'd never guess magic was happening in this brightly lit, corner store in Noe Valley. Before discovering Subs, Inc. I wasn't a big fan of subs & sandwiches. I'm a convert - very glad I found this place. The menu is extensive, everything is fresh. There are a lot of healthy options . Vast array of vegetables, condiments and often, the owner Rami, creates homemade sauces. His garlic spreads are my favorite, actually the homemade cranberry relish is delicious too! The bread. Oh, the bread. Wow. Good on its own. I love this place. The portions are also immense, these guys don't skimp nor mess around when making food. Artists. We have these for lunch, dinner or grab a couple to take on hikes or picnics. Mitchell's ice cream is available, as well as homemade chocolate chip cookies. So good. Go try it out. read more

Got a roasted turkey, it was delicious! Great meat and bread, I also like that cheese is included since most places charge.. cheese is just as important as the meat imo! Service was good and fast! My Sandwich was mediocre. Normally im all over Dutch Crunch this was fresh however not flavorful. Black forest ham didnt taste like black forest although it had the look of Black Forest edge. Chunks of lettuce I like shredded lettuce. I asked for extra lettuce and Mayo I didn't get that but I got only mayo and lettuce. No tomatoes no pickles. Cheese was rubbery. I really hate solicitors. With their chirpy attitudes and their screen-printed t-shirts and tell-tale clipboards, they are a major annoyance in my day. Yes, I support same-sex marriage. Yes, the oil spill is awful. No, I don't think the politicians should be getting away with it. But I've already signed your petition before, I'm too broke to donate money, and quite frankly, I'm fairly apathetic for someone who graduated with a Political Science degree. I was on my way to Subs, Inc., earlier this week when I got stuck at a red light with a Greenpeace dude. After ten minutes of being nice and trying to figure out where I could just sign my name so he would leave me alone, I discover that he wants me to join the organization with a $180/year membership. Uh, excuse me? I quickly shuttled myself across the street and into the warm cozy Subs, Inc. shop. Bought myself a rockin' turkey and avocado sandwich. Having just moved from the Castro, where I was surrounded by solid sub choices (Ike's, Posh Bagel, Delano's Deli), I'd like to think I have pretty high standards. And man alive was that sandwich good. I raved about it on google talk, I raved about it in an email, I raved about it over text message. It was perfectly toasted - crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside. And it was full of tasty ingredients, lots of extra avocado, and I really enjoyed the vinaigrette that gave it an extra "POP!" The rest of the menu looked equally appealing, though if you want something fancy or over-the-top, you'll have to go elsewhere. The best part? $8 for a ginormous sandwich that kept me full all day. $8 for a sandwich that kept me occupied as I hurriedly walked by the Greenpeace dude and back to my apartment. $8 for a sandwich that I'm already craving again. OK, class. I have an announcement to make: Someone in Noe Valleyy is copying off Yelp's favorite sub sandwich place...FINALLY! For comparison's sake, I ordered the 'BBQ Beef' and 'The Godfather'. The BBQ beef was smoky and given just enough sauce to tang it up real nice. 'The Godfather' was comparable to another sub named after the most distinctive feature of the 'USS Nautilus'. (educational-crack a book if you don't know it) The sandwiches were 'oh-so-close' in flava to those found at a different port(al). Yeah, I know, you don't believe me...but it's true. Subs Inc. gets a B+/A- on the sub part. Extra Credit: 16 flavors of Mitchell's ice cream earns this teacher's pet a full 5 gold sticky stars for their Trapper Keeper. read more

The quest for the perfect sandwich - Episode 289 "Best sub in town" huh?! I took it as a challenge. I turned on "Eye of the Tiger", did some gratuitous air-punching, and made sure my sweatbands matched my shoes...then i went for it. I have been twice - both experiences have been great...perhaps not the greatEST, but great nonetheless. My first sando was the regular-sized hot link with everything. It was juicy (my top requirement in sub-sammie judging), the ingredients were of good quality, and the bread was toasted to perfection. I don't know about you, but sub rolls (whoa, that should be a new term for that pouch of fat that sits right below your pant waist-line - sub roll!) should be messy. They should crumb when you take a bite...you should be INHALING bread crumbs. At any rate...the rolls here meet my crunchy/toasted/crumby criteria. My second sando was the BLTA. A drier sandwich, but still good. The redeeming characteristic was the bacon. Typically I like super-thick chewy SLABS of bacon on my BLT(A), but these were thin pieces. I was surprised by the amount of flavor packed into those little sliceys...total melt-in-your-mouthfeel. The flavor and texture was present in a major way. I will go back...it's conveniently near the Valley Tavern which has a great pub quiz on Monday night and is kind enough to allow you to bring in whatever food you like. Also, it's conveniently dimly lit...allowing me to eat my sando without concern about the lovely sub-juices dripping down my face and off my chin! read more

I was on my way to Philz coffee in Noe Valley and had planned to pick up a sandwich from the Safeway nearby which, in retrospect, probably would have been near the same quality and a bit cheaper. I perused the menu for a good bit of time and I had finally settled on the tuna melt. The guy at the counter asked if I'd like a small or large and replied, "small." The portions are good. I'll give them that. I took a spot close to the front of the shop next to the window and waited for my sandwich to come. When it was finally ready, a woman called out, "tuna sandwich!" Immediately I thought, "uh oh!" She dropped it off on my table and I asked her, "tuna melt, right?" She wasn't too sure of herself either and said, "yea." The sandwich that showed up was a tuna sub where the bread was toasted, similarly to what I'd get at a Subway. I took a bite just hoping, by surprise, that it tasted like what anybody would consider a tuna melt. NOPE! I took the sandwich back to the counter just to double-check with the guys who made it. They asked me if I had wanted a cold tuna sandwich instead. I said, "well, all the tuna melts I've had at other places, the sandwich came off a grill and the tuna was actually sort of grilled or hot." One of the guys responded, "We just put the bread in the toaster." I said, "Okay. No problem." Then I took my sandwich and walked away back to my table. I am super disappointed, because I saw four stars for this spot before I showed up. That's super deceptive. I would not call it a "tuna melt" if it resembles nothing like a grilled tuna sandwich similarly to a grilled cheese in appearance and/or flavor" What I got was a toasted tuna sub. I just got home with one of these yummy sandwiches. A large turkey with Avocado. I think I like mayo again after having one of these. The bread is nicely toasted, warm, but not too hot & the cheese is well melted. They are a little pricey [about 9 bucks out the door for the large sandwich & avocado as an extra]. i was tempted to buy some chips, but they were $1.50 for a bag so I didn't. They also didn't give me the crazy amounts of lettuce, tomato & onions I asked for. They're good & they do have ice cream. read more

I recently moved near this place with my girlfriend and finally walked in a couple of days ago. The first time was a little awkward as we were having issues with our CC and didn't have cash; it was late so we left. I came in a second time a couple of days later to pick up a sammy for me and the miss and this time had cash. The dude behind the cash register/guy who made my sandwich was extremely nice and very talkative (I unfortunately forgot his name). He told me a story about a woman coming in drunk from the Peaks bar next door and wanting a sandwich. She told him she'd tip him well but realized she only had enough for the sandwich. He mentioned it was cool and low and behold, when he came in the next day that same lady had left him $20 for his services! Nicely done. Anyway, on to the sandwich. I'm a vegetarian so we got the avocado and cheese with everything. It was very tasty, the bread was toasted just right and the cheese was nice and hot. All in all, with the secret hot sauce and everything in it, I was very pleased with my choice. The "large" is pretty big and filled up two people so the price is also reasonable. I think my only gripe are the choices; someone in an earlier review mentioned they wish they had better vegetarian/fish choices and I agree. I also think they should have a couple more bread choices and maybe even a pita bread or something. In the end, I'm giving this place a 5 star rating for the service, friendly staff, and delicious food at a reasonable price. THE BACKGROUND: Ah Noe Valley, I love thee. Walking through, I saw the wonderfully yellow sub shop and had to take a peek. The logo is cute and creative, maybe the sandwiches will be too. THE STAFF: The staff was friendly and seemed to not hate humanity, that's a step in the right direction. THE FOOD: I ordered a large tuna sub. They put it in the oven for heating... When I ate the sub I wasn't that impressed, the bread was ok and the tuna was ok. Nothing super fresh tasting or anything... No pickles that I could taste. It filled me up though cause it was pretty damned big. Seemed on par with subway... Bummer, my high hopes dashed. The Great Case of the Sub Mix-up!!! My sandwich was accidentally bagged with another sandwich but all was resolved when they so generously offered to make me a whole new one. It was still not the best sandwich I'd ever had and it had that not-so-fresh feeling... if you know what I mean. In the meantime I enjoyed a scoop of the Chocolate Caramel Crunch, it was the best combo of flavor, sweet and salty, and texture, crunch and creamy. Go for the ice cream.... we all love ice cream!!! Their tag line is "The best subs in town." While that might be logistically true since they are the *ONLY* sub shop in Noe, I think it's a little misleading. I went there with a friend yesterday and they screwed up both our sandwiches. Even when they finally got it right, they still tasted like pretty bland: I'm fairly certain the "Secret Sauce" is Wishbone Italian dressing. They get one star for actually opening a sub shop in Noe, and the other for serving 16 flavors of Mitchell's ice cream: the only reason I left the place satiated. read more

My aunt was picking me up in the City after work to be ever so kind to drive m home for the weekend (2 hour ride). She was also kind enough to drive me to 2 places to pick up some negatives and photo paper for my up coming photography class. We were starving by the time we were done running around (during commute hour mind you!) so we happened to be in the Noe hood and wanted something quick. Viola! Subs inc appears! There's no parking, so I jump out the of car and run in to order us some sandwiches for the road. I picked up a BLT and I ordered her some chicken/turkey sandwich with everything. They toasted the sandwiches and were friendly while I waited. I also saw they serve Mitchell's ice cream ... yum!!!!! The guy rang us up, wrapped up the sandwiches and bagged our chips and I was off. I found my aunt and while we were at a red light, we popped open our sandwiches. Alls I can say is YUMMIES!!! Awesome BLT. The bacon was cooked to perfection and just the right amount of mayo. It was just good. My aunt liked her sandwich too. Plus they were a really good size. We lucked out here. I'd come back here again for sandwiches. Plus for some dessert too ... This is an awesome sub shop, definitely some of the best I've ever had the pleasure of eating. Right on the corner of Castro and 24th street. Service is always pleasant and speedy. I get the hot pastrami with pepperocinis and garlic spread. Milkshakes from here are equally delicious. I personally prefer the sandwiches from here over Ike's in Castro. Can't go wrong no matter what you order from here. They also have a loyalty program where after so many sandwiches (10 I think) you get one for free. 100% recommend this sandwich spot! read more

For some reason, whenever I get sick/hungover, my comfort food is a sandwich. I really don't know why. But since moving to the city, and not living near a Subway sandwich shop (which was where I used to pick up my sick day sandwiches back in So Cal), I've discovered Subs Inc., just a few bus stops away from where I live. My staple is a BLT with avocado on a soft roll with cheddar added. The great thing about this place is that they stick the bread and cheese in the oven for a bit so the bread gets nice and warm and the cheese melts and makes me drool a little just thinking about it. Altogether a great sandwich. The shop is very low key and the guys are not overly friendly, like most of the shops in Noe Valley which can be sickeningly sweet at times, even more so when you're not feeling well. These dudes are chill, straightforward, make your sandwich, give it to you, and you're on your way. I like this place. read more

I have now been here at least 8 or 9 times and now feel prepared to properly evaluate this place. Their sandwiches are really, really on point. As someone else said, not the best sub I've ever had but it's pretty high ip there. They use actual cuts of meat in their roast chicken and turkey sandwiches, not processed crap. They give you liberal portions of meat as well as toppings. Good and interesting selection of drinks. They toast these subs to perfection, it's pretty amazing to what heights that can elevate a sandwich. The dutch crunch is addictive. I don't care for their Italian dressing but their garlic spread is really really tasty. They tend to make the sandwiches kinda dry, I recommend asking for some extra mayo. High up on my list is the San Franciscan , the turkey blt and the roast chicken. In the middle somewhere is the meatball, pretty good. Last is the tuna... It just doesn't taste super good to me and I am a huge fan of tuna. Also their cheddar cheese is... A little weird. I would recommend going with a different cheese. Also their ice cream is really very good but I think they totally don't give you enough for the price. Avoid unless actually in ice cream withdrawal. Service is friendly and great. Went here yesterday because I was starving and had like 15 minutes to eat. You don't always make the best dining experiences under those circumstance, but Subs Inc worked out just fine. I had the cheese and avocado. Do they only have provolone cheese? Maybe. They didn't ask what kind of cheese I wanted, the menu says that all sandwiches come with provolone. The oven toasting seems to be merely novelty, because my sandwich was not warmed all the way through, the cheese was not melty at all. The time spent in the oven was just enough to dry out the roll that the sandwich was on. I know you're thinking, "That sounds awful! Why still 3 stars." Avocado! There was an abundance of freshly sliced avo on the thing that made it all worth while. I give puffy hearts to sandwich places that pile on the fresh avo - and don't even try to put the mashed up avo on my sandwich (sorry Togo's!). And they put oil and vinegar on my sandwich.
