My favorite place for a deli sandwich in SF. They are always very sweet here and make yummy sandwiches every time. They also have a huge selection for sizes of sandwiches (great for sharing) and bread options. Sometimes if you come later in the day they are sold out of breads. Subs Inc is a really decent sandwich spot, which is a rare find in San Francisco! I wasn't that enthused about any of the sandwiches on the menu, and ended up going for a pretty basic turkey bacon avocado on Dutch crunch. They give you plenty of avocado, which is nice, and their Dutch crunch is done perfectly! Their sandwiches come with the works, which I think was lettuce tomato onion mayo mustard and oil. The whole sandwich was huge, and I think the topping ratio was good, plenty of sauce! Overall it's a nice place that gives you a lot of food for a pretty low price. We love the neighborhood, but from where we are in SoMa, it always seems a tad more of a trek than our lazy derrieres are willing to handle although it's admittedly a simple J-ride away. That myopic attitude has been modified recently by this unassuming sandwich shop on the corner of 24th and Castro. Now sandwich shops are a dime a dozen, and I do go to Subway every now and then to get my BMT fix. However, a really well made sandwich is gold, especially in Jamie's book since he is a connoisseur of sorts. We finally gave it a try a couple of months ago late on a Saturday when we weren't feeling like a fine dining experience. Which is often, by the way. There are about a couple of dozen sandwiches on their chalkboard and then several options of toppings and such after that. I was facing that Starbucks conundrum of making six decisions in quick succession and hoping for the best. I did good as I ordered the $8.25 Mortadella with Provolone on Dutch Crunch. Had the large meatball sub here yesterday (they call it the Joe Dimaggio) and it was pretty huge. I definitely could have gotten the regular but... shrug? Anyways, Subs Inc. suffers from the same soft dutch crunch problem that seems to plague every deli in the bay area with the exception of Guerra Meats on Taraval. That being said, the soft dutch was a good match for this particular sandwich since, in my opinion, you want soft bread to mold around the meat and sauce in a meatball sub and that happened here. I got the Mozzarella Basil sammich. Let me just say that the sammich is good but the bread I got is too toasted. I was so excited to try a new sammich shop in Noe Valley as I live super close in walking distance here. The store was really hot though today was very hot as well. Anyways, I ordered the Dutch Crunch bread which I love so much since I am not a native SFer. The bread is a bit burnt and really hard on the edges. The way the bread is would cut the roof of your mouth. I do not recommend the Dutch crunch bread at all so don't waste your time ordering it. The sammich price is $8 bucks which is kinda pricey for a 'regular' but I forgot that Noe Valley is a bit more pricey like downtown SF. The guy who took my order was kind and the place kinda got busy after I ordered. I'm not a fan of how small space the layout is to get in and out and the ice cream flavors looked good. I would probably visit again but totally order different bread for sure. I'm so bummed that the bread is blehhh but I am glad I tried this place. read more

Disclaimer: This review is about their salads. I ordered a cobb salad for takeout ($10) with chicken ($3). A few bites in, I noticed that the lettuce looked wilted and old--it clearly wasn't fresh. I ended up taking out most of the chicken too, because it had a rubbery, almost gummy texture. It was not at all appetizing. I'll caveat this review by saying that when I first moved to Noe I would have rated this place a 5. I was getting a sub a week. They were delicious and packed full of meat. Having said that, the last 6 months of visits has been a streak of misses. I went 6 of 7 visits with either my order messed up or Subs not having an ingredient of the sandwich. This last visit an older gentlemen was working (possibly the owner but not sure). The sandwich I ordered was made correctly and was pretty tasty, but the amount of meat on the sandwich dropped considerably. I'm used to some sandwich to sandwich variation, but so much of this particular sandwich was just sauce and bread. Having been a regular customer for a while, the disparity was noticeable. What knocked another star off was how that older gentlemen treated the Mitchell's delivery man when we were in the store.
