I came here because I was craving some Asian food and wanted to try out a new restaurant. I ordered online right when it opened (12 PM) and the food was ready within 15 minutes. I got the tofu yaki udon and my boyfriend got 2 onigiri. The food was delicious! There were lots of veggies in the yaki udon and a decent amount of tofu. It was all very flavorful and even the presentation looked nice. I got a bite of the onigiri and it tasted good as well. My only qualm is that the food is on the more expensive side. In Asia, onigiri are only about $1 but they were being sold here for almost $5. I know its different here and I'm sure there's a reason for it, but it just seemed a little overpriced to me. Unfortunately, due to covid, we weren't able to dine in which was a shame because the interior looked really nice from the pictures. Came here in the afternoon for a coffee and a place to work (my car was being serviced down the street). The shop was empty when I arrived and, with the exception of the two customers who took their orders to go, it remained that way for the two hours I was there. The staff behind the counter were very welcoming, coffee was good (sorry forgot to take a photo), shop (including the bathrooms) was clean, and there was plenty of comfortable seating. I walked in needing to use the restroom so my boyfriend ordered food for us. He put in an order of one tuna rice ball. He said the server rolled his eyes at him after asking "is that it?" Very rude customer service and it was our first time. He was a man in his 30's-40's with curly hair and a manbun. I then come by to finish the order and my boyfriend says he needs to use the restroom too. After he accidentally heads to the kitchen area and asked where the restroom is, the server rolls his eyes again. Not even explaining to us where it is. I told my boyfriend it was the next door. The food was great but honestly really killed the experience for us. We ordered the spicy tuna, kimchi chicken, kimchi pork, mango ice cream and miso ice cream. I've been reading lots of great review about Sugar Pine, and finally got the chance to try it earlier this week. I saw that they offered online ordering so gave that a try. I ordered an avocado onigiri and a grilled salmon Set dish which comes with seasonal vegetables, rice, pickled vegetables, miso soup, salad and a cute as a button almond cookie. The online ordering process went smoothly, other than I was surprised that I was charged $3 more for the Grilled Salmon set dish than the website menu lists. The salmon was the only dish that had this up charge for online ordering vs the website menu, I'm not sure why this is. While Sugar Pine is located in a hard-scrabble section of 183 underneath the the highway, Sugar Pine itself is an oasis of gleaming new in the midst of under maintained urban sprawl. Sugar Pine is modern, new, aesthetically designed, and a glimmer of cool in an otherwise run-down area. I was able to park right out front and run in to pick up my order, which was ready moments after I arrived. I tore into the onigiri on the drive home. Perhaps this is how onigiri is always packaged, I wouldn't know having never had it before. I found the packaging was innovative. Keeping the seaweed wrapper dry until you are ready to consume. The wrapper surrounds the seaweed sheet within cellophane that separates the seaweed wrapper from the rice, but the easily removed cellophane lets the seaweed wrapper snuggle into place around the rice as it is taken away. Upon arrival home, I admired the packing of the Set dish. A multi-compartment container that kept the rice, salad, and main part of the dish separated. Very nice quality, and kept my food in good shape during transit. All of the components were prepared well and tasted great. I liked being able to order a meal with several different components. The almond cookie had a nice chewy texture, and was a perfect sweet punctuation mark to end the meal. read more

This restaurant is very cute. It was kind of a shame to order out and not stay to enjoy! That said, online ordering was a breeze and our food was ready in about 20 minutes at lunchtime on a Saturday. When I picked it up, it was piping hot and really fresh. I got the vegetable udon soup and it was delicious! Tofu was just right, broth was rich and satisfying, and there were so many kinds of veggies (two kinds of mushrooms, acorn squash, bok choy, carrots, snow peas.) I got it with "low spice" and neither my toddler or I thought it was spicy at all. Even sharing it with my toddler, I was full after. My partner got the beef set. I love that it comes with all the sides, which were all very fresh and beautiful. We didn't love the beef itself, though, and probably wouldn't order that again. It was fine, but I found the meat a little over-cooked for my taste. All in all, a very positive experience and we'll definitely be back to try more dishes and get that amazing udon soup! read more

This is a great little Japanese Cafe/Coffee shop/ice cream shop! We ordered ice coffee (it was very good) for the food we got the Fish & chips. It's tempera fish with potato chips. The fish was temperaed fried perfectly and also came with small portion pickled cucumbers. I didn't care for the pickles (I don't like sweet pickles) I recommend more traditional Japanese pickles. We also ordered the Umeboshi Onigiri (Japanese rice balls with pickled salted Japanese plum) and it was amazing with perfect temperature and texture of the rice and a nice amount of plum inside! This is a simple snack (if done right) and it was! It made me miss home! We also ordered the Soba noodles. It was pretty good but I could tell they prepared the soba noodles in advance witch left them a little dry. The tsuyu (dipping sauce) needed a little more soy in my opinion. After our lunch we ordered their sherbet and it was amazing! This place is really new and they are still working out the kinks, but I would highly recommend this place for lunch or a light snack/coffee/ice cream! What a cool place! I love that they have everything from coffee and ice cream to small plates to main plates. I got the pork katsu, and while it wasn't the best I've had (the breading fell off a lot and the sauce was a little on the sweeter side than usual), it was good and came with rice, miso soup, salad, pickled (?) veggies, and a little delicious cookie. Next time, I'd like to try to soba noodles; it's not everyday that you come across that. I also got a steak onigiri to-go, but I think these onigiris are definitely best when served and eaten fresh. Since I got mine to-go and had to refridgerate it for a couple of days, the rice was dry when I ate it. It was still good, but I wish it had more flavor than just rice and some beef in the middle. I love the concept though, and I think it's unique. My FAVORITE part of this restaurant experience was the ice cream. We got matcha, black sesame, and taro. Not only did I like these options because it's not super common to find black sesame and taro ice cream in Austin, but the flavors were so rich and creamy. The flavors were quite sweet (as opposed to a more earthy/bitter taste that matcha or black sesame can sometimes be), but I have a sweet tooth so I didn't mind at all. My new favorite place this summer so far. It's a great date night, hang out, or even a place for dinner with your family. Also a great place for just ice cream. My friend took me here after a movie for ice cream and we needed up ordering food. It was delicious. We had the tofu and veggies. It came with all the sides, rice, salad, pickled veggies, miso soup, and a gluten free cookie. It was a pretty presentation. Let's talk about ice cream, there were different flavors like watermelon basil or a matcha tea or thai tea. I loved the toasted coconut. A really cute and modern restaurant in North Austin, right across from the Target shopping center on Research. They not only serve home made ice cream but they serve Japanese concept food, wine and beer. Unfortunately I did not try the food but will come back soon but the ice cream was wonderful! I am so glad this place opened up! It's so close to my house and they have great food and drinks. My husband and I went there recently for dinner and we loved it. He had the fish and chips and I had the katsu chicken. The katsu chicken was a set dish, so it came with rice, veggies, miso soup, salad, and a cookie. OMG. It was absolutely delicious and very filling. My husband's fish and chips were amazing and lightly fried. We ordered wine and beer, which they had a great variety. I'm really loving this place! if I lived closer I would come here every day for some ice cream :] But before I talk about the ice cream...let's talk about the food! I ordered the chicken katsu, beef onigiri, and karaage. Overall, the food was was pretty good and presented beautifully. The chicken katsu came with a side of rice, salad, miso soup, and pickled veggies. The chicken had a good crunch but I think it, and the salad, needed a bit more sauce/dressing. I thought the miso soup and pickled veggies were both really tasty! The plates also come with a cute little pine nut cookie (which they gave to us later because it was originally forgotten) and it was surprisingly really soft and delicious! The beef onigiri was pretty good although I wish the seaweed stayed a little more crunchy. I wasn't sure what I was expecting with beef (because it was recommended by the owner) but they use like a bulgolgi so it was actually quite delicious. The karaage was ok as well with a good crunch but lacking a bit of flavor. It came with a little yogurt like sauce which I also wish had more flavor to add. Given that they are still in their soft opening phase, I can see the potential of this place and am really excited to see where they go! Now onto the ice cream! OH MY GOODNESS! I shamelessly tired all of the flavors because they all sounded delicious. I ended up going with the black sesame, coconut, and taro. Coconut and taro are definitely my favorites! You can really tell they use fresh REAL ingredients because the ice creams actually taste like the real deals. Like the taro actually tasted like legit taro....and I LOVE taro! They make all the flavors homemade and stay true to the original fruits/roots/teas. Tldr; food was pretty good although I imagine they're still in the process of perfecting everything! The scene: Minimal and fresh cafe with a great selection of bites for any palette or diet. Good for: Get their spicy miso vegetable udon soup. Their broth is so rich and flavorful, it will lift anyone's soul. The vegetables they use are great and plentiful, cooked to a perfect texture between stewed and seared. The acorn squash was my favorite. Must have: Their onigiri may be the best in town, easily. Their spicy tofu has got to be their best, so much that I cannot order anything else without also getting that. The tofu is medium firmness and seared with a delicious spicy sauce. The onigiri is wrapped with tofu skin and topped with a touch of seaweed and a sliced pepper. Could be better: The soba noodle dish surprised me - in not a good way. The noodles are cooked perfectly but their broth just confused us, there is no flavor. The broth is clear and delicate, perhaps too delicate and overwhelmed by the flavor of the noodles. Knowing the quality of the other dishes, I'm hopeful this will likely change & can update this review accordingly. read more

A trendy space serving up some simple and tasty Japanese bites. We came here with some friends on a Saturday early evening. We brought our kids in tow and the place is casual enough where I'd call this a family friendly spot. When we arrived, there were people eating, studying, and hanging out. The food menu is fairly simple, you can order onigiris (think Japanese stuffed rice sandwiches), entree bento boxes, and a variety of appetizers. This place also serves beer, wine, and some coffee drinks as well. The highlight in my opinion is their ice cream selection. My husband and I each ordered bento boxes- I got the chicken katsu and my husband ordered the grilled salmon. We ordered our little guy some soba noodles. The bento boxes came with miso soup, a salad or pickled veggies, the entree, and the most delectable unassuming tiny cookie that is a surprising treat for the end of your meal. Both our entrees were delicious and I would highly recommend. The portions are a bit on the smaller side which is why I took off one star. But maybe their strategy is to leave enough room for ice cream, which we both succumbed to. The ice cream flavors are of Japanese/Asian influence-taro root, matcha, miso caramel, white chocolate thai tea, toasted coconut, and black sesame. We got the taro root and toasted coconut, which in my opinion were the best of the bunch. The ice cream was the perfect consistency and I'll definitely be back for more. The space is cozy, about 6-7 tables as well as counter seating. The patio is enclosed and a surprising retreat-great to bring kids and dogs. Parking seems plentiful with a lot adjacent. Hello I just got back on yelp just to write this review. It was my first time eating here and I thought the food was decent. It's a nice little shop to grab a quick snack at. Here are some of my three main critiques about SugarPine. First off, the black sesame and taro ice cream were da bomb I totally recommend getting that if you come here. Secondly, I also decided to get the Chicken Karaage Plate. It came with some miso soup, a salad, pickles veggies, and a small cookie. It was a bit overpriced, so I would recommend getting the small dish the next time you're craving Chicken Karaage. Lastly, when I was served my Chicken Karaage Plate it was accidentally sent to the table next to me. However, instead of receiving a new dish after it had been at the other customers table for a couple of minutes I was served the same plate. It would've been nice to have a fresh dish rather even if our wait time for it to come out would've been longer. Overall, it's a your a decent Japanese and ice cream shop. read more

I saw an article on the austin-culturemap website mentioning the opening of Sugar Pine and then went to Yelp to check reviews and photos. Within a couple days, I made time for an early lunch arriving precisely at 11am. Oh my... Katsu, Soba and Onigiri? Where do I begin? I decided for a lighter lunch of soba and an onigiri and was very happy I did. The team there was very friendly and helpful. I only moved back to Austin about 2 years ago and had not found anyplace offering buckwheat soba. Soba was a regular dish at Japanese restaurants in San Francisco, so I was disappointed when I could not find soba in Austin. This cold soba on a HOT summer day brought back strong memories of living in Tokyo and cooling down with soba at lunchtime. It was excellent and I will definitely order it again. However, my favorite was their beautifully created Salmon Onigiri. I enjoyed many a "rice ball" living in Japan from the local convenience store to high end Japanese department store basements and even on the Shinkansen. This one had a generous amount of delicious salmon and was almost too beautiful to eat! Although I did and ordered 3 different ones to take home! I love how they used the traditional plastic wrap on the to go onigiri to keep the nori (seaweed) separated from the rice ball and it's so very easy to eat...as simple as 1, 2, 3!
